Quite a lot when it involves a possible change in the name of the House you are aligned with at Pompallier Catholic College. There is a tradition, a sense of belonging, some pride and some measure of success sitting behind that particular House name and its history. Try to change a name, and one could encounter the Romeo and Juliet tragedy. Juliet asks Romeo to put aside his family name and traditions and to be a new person, a new baptism for: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”. The two lovers, from feuding families, found out that it was not as easy as they thought it would be. A name inevitably carries some meaning at a surface level and can also carry something symbolic as well. Our College is Catholic with a Marist charism. Being Catholic and Marist means something to us because these names carry a deeper meaning that influences what we do and how we relate to each other. To an outsider, the names may convey only surface level meanings gained from their personal knowledge rather than a lived experience. To an insider, they give a sense of belonging and a sense of direction for the future. It is within the context of being a symbol that a group of students and staff are reviewing the names we use for Houses at the College. We are now looking at criteria that we could use to discern whether a particular name is suitable. Catholic and Marist is a given because that is who we are. But we need to look beyond that to criteria such as: Northland links, ethnicity, gender, values, connectivity to youth, an aspirational story, Church involvement and New Zealand contextualised. Once we discern some criteria and the weighting we attach to each criteria, we will determine whether the existing House names of Chavoin, Dowling, Colin and Hobson are retained. If any need to be changed, we will then look for alternatives and allow staff and students to select one of the proposed alternatives. It seems very likely that Dowling and Hobson will be changed, but it is also possible that all four will be changed under this process. We intend to make a decision before the end of this year. While the names might change, we are not going to change the number of Houses or the current colours. SPECIAL CHARACTER REVIEW 2017 Two weeks ago we had an external review of the Catholic Special Character. We have just received the final report and it makes for very positive reading about our College, staff and students. There were also some recommendations for us which were mainly associated with trying to provide some more training opportunities for our staff. We would love to do that but it needs a lot of money and time, so we always have to weigh that against our other financial needs and our teaching. Below are a few quotes from the report which capture some of the many things that impressed the reviewers: “The College has given a great deal of attention to the place of prayer in its daily life, and the results are impressive in variety and thoughtfulness.” “Students at the school feel safe, and report very little in the way of bullying. Parents also feel that their children are cared for and known by name.” “Classroom pedagogy is the subject of Goal 1 in the Annual Plan, with the intention to develop student - centred learning and enquiry teaching. Progress towards this goal was clearly observable during the review: students were actively engaged in learning and lessons were sufficiently well -planned to provide a variety of activities.” “Pompallier Catholic College expects that Catholic teaching is integrated in other curriculum areas and the reports to the Board that must be provided by every HOL cover this in some detail. A full set of these reports for 2016 was provided to the reviewers and they show evidence of deep consideration for the Catholic Character and Marist Charism.” Thank you to all the staff members, students and families who have helped to make our College a place of on-going success. VISION STATEMENT

Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where

all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

SPECIAL CHARACTER REVIEW 2017

Two weeks ago we had an external review of the Catholic Special Character. We have just received the final report and it makes for very positive reading about our College, staff and students. There were also some recommendations for us which were mainly associated with trying to provide some more training opportunities for

our staff. We would love to do that but it needs a lot of money and time, so we always have to weigh that against our other financial needs and our teaching.

Below are a few quotes from the report which capture some of the many things that impressed the reviewers:

“The College has given a great deal of attention to the place of prayer in its daily life, and the results are impressive in variety and thoughtfulness.”

“Students at the school feel safe, and report very little in the way of bullying. Parents also feel that their children are cared for and known by name.”

“Classroom pedagogy is the subject of Goal 1 in the Annual Plan, with the intention to develop student-centred learning and enquiry teaching. Progress towards this goal was clearly observable during the review: students were actively engaged in learning and lessons were sufficiently well-planned to provide a variety of activities.”

Thank you to all the staff members, students and families who have helped to make our College a place of on-going success.

SPORTS FEES OVERDUE

Could all families with students playing sports please ensure that full fees are paid this week.

All sports codes get a newsletter advising of the season fee costs and the due date for payment. This is usually at the start of the season, or within a few weeks of grading.

Fees are set to cover what we must pay to each local association, and for the purchase of a few balls or equipment needed.

Fees should be paid straight away and not left to be covered by an automatic payment that is set-up for College costs. Thank you.

MARCELLIN COLLEGE SPORTS EXCHANGE - CANCELLED

Unfortunately, Marcellin required us to change our pre-planned dates and since then we have been unable to find a mutually suitable date for the annual event.

As this exchange is costly to travel to Auckland, this should take some pressure off families – as there are still several players in the football teams, and one in netball, with outstanding sports fees for the 2017 season.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Powerlifting: Johnathon Tillman, in Year 11, competed in the National Classic Power Lifting Championships in Dunedin this week, where he placed 3

CARITAS CHALLENGE 2017

Our College students joined with more than 10,500 young people from all over the country to conquer the Caritas Challenge for 2017, and we are proud to announce that we raised $3480.20 towards the total amount of $65,000 that was raised to help people in Kiribati, who are facing many challenges as a direct result of climate change.

Matched funding from the New Zealand Government’s Aid Programme will enable this fundraising to multiply beyond half a million dollars – which is awesome!

These efforts have helped Caritas continue working in Kiribati to:

- Provide nutrition leadership training for women and youth several times a year giving practical tools towards cooking healthy food

- Research traditional foods and how they can be used

- Manage action plans to promote healthy lifestyles for women and youth

- Support local organisations in skill development

Thank you to all the students who took part, and their families for supporting them!

MUMPS INFORMATION

We have been notified by the Northland District Health Board that they have seen a few more positive cases of mumps recently in the Whangarei area.

They have provided the following information for parents to raise awareness of symptoms.

What is Mumps?

Mumps is a contagious viral illness. Mumps symptoms include swollen or painful glands under the ear or jaw; swollen or painful testicles, fever, tiredness and/or muscle aches. Many children do not have any symptoms.

How is Mumps spread?

People with mumps can spread the virus through the air by droplets made when they breathe, cough or sneeze. It can also be spread through saliva containing the virus (e.g. when sharing food, drink or kissing). The time from becoming infected with the virus to developing symptoms can be as long as 25 days, but is typically 16-18 days. People with mumps are most infectious 2 days before to 5 days after the onset of swollen glands. Even those without symptoms may be able to spread the virus.

The MMR Vaccine provides the best protection against Mumps:

Children usually receive the first mumps, measles, and rubella vaccine (MMR) at 15 months of age and the second dose at 4 years of age. If you are unsure of your child’s vaccination status, or if your child has not received the vaccine or has only received one dose, consult your healthcare provider. While vaccination against mumps is the best protection against mumps infection, vaccinated individuals may still become infected.

If your child experiences mumps symptoms, please see your family doctor and keep your child away from school or public places for 5 days from the time swollen glands first appear.

Yours sincerely,

Virginia McLaughlin Medical Officer of Health, NDHB

STUDENT ABSENCES

If your child is going to be away from school, please ensure that you ring and let us know first thing. In the case of illness, please make sure that you ring in each day your child is sick.

The Student Centre can be reached by pressing Option 1 when you ring the school and has an answer phone, so you can leave a message outside school hours.

BUS PASSES ... If your child loses their pass, they can apply for a replacement by paying $6.00 to the College office.

A temporary pass will be issued, and a new pass will be ordered for them. As these are printed off-site, this can take a few days.

ATTENDANCE DUES SPONSORSHIP

The Attendance Dues Sponsorship Scheme has been created to assist families who may need financial support with the payment of Attendance Dues, for students attending Catholic schools in Auckland Diocese, both primary and secondary.

The purpose of the sponsorship scheme is to allow parents or caregivers facing financial hardship another option to seek relief where they may be reluctant to approach their school for help.

The existing financial hardship scheme – operated by your school – is also available to parents or caregivers facing hardship and we do encourage families facing financial difficulties to please contact your school office.

Application forms are available from school and parish offices, or can be downloaded from the Catholic Schools Office website: www.catholicschools.org.nz (go to Property and Finance / Finance / Attendance Dues).

If you have any queries or require assistance with the payment of Attendance Dues under the sponsorship scheme, you are invited to phone in confidence, Carol Krebs (Ph. 09 360 3069) at the Auckland Diocese office.

Applications to the sponsorship scheme for 2017 Attendance Dues will be accepted by the Auckland Common Fund Ltd up to November 2017.
