Welcome

Welcome To AllOfYou Topic Polymers Presented by Mohd ArmanRoll - 7206Economics Sec-2 Introduction of polymers A high-molecular-weight organic compound, natural or synthetic, whose structure can be represented by a repeated small unit (mer). These long molecular chains consist of repeating chemical units held together by covalent bonds formed by a polymerization reaction. The product of polymerization of one monomer is called a homopolymer, mono-polymer or simply a polymer. When two monomers are polymerized simultaneously the product is called a copolymer. The term terpolymer is sometimes used for polymerization products of three monomers. However, the term heteropolymer is also used for terpolymers as well as for products of more than three monomers. The terms polymer, resin, high-polymer, macromolecular substance and plastic are often used interchangeably. Definition Copyright 1989 CRC Press LLC. All rights reserved.

polymerspolymers4Types of polymersA natural polymer is one made by living organisms. The human body contains many such polymers including nucleic acids and proteins. Natural polymers found in plants A synthetic polymer is made by chemicals units which are held together by chemical bonds. Synthetic polymer example is plastics, fibber, synthetic , rubber etc. Natural Synthetic Types of polymers Natural polymers Synthetic polymers

Types of natural polymers: DNA-keeping of genetic codes. RNA- play a role in the transfer of genetic information, and helping in translation. Proteins- a variety of roles; enzymatic, structural, hormonal, immunogenic etc.Structural polymers like a natural fibber, gels and natural rubber etc.Functional polymers Structural polymers Types of synthetic polymers Synthetic fibbers are the result of extensive research by scientists to improve upon naturally occurring animal and plant fibbers they are made from chemicals.Plastic are polymers that are extremely versatile and flexible. Polymers are made from monomer. Monomer are relatively small molecules which bonds together to from larger molecules called polymers. Fibber Plastics PolymerizationPolymerization is the method of creating a synthetic polymer by combining many small monomer molecules into chain held together by covalent bonds. There are two major forms of polymerization, step growth polymerization and chain growth polymerization. The main difference between the two types of polymerization is that in chain growth polymerization, monomer molecules are added to the chain one at a time. In the case of step growth polymerization, monomer molecules can bond directly with one anotherFibber Plastics

Two types of plastics used in daily life These plastics cannot be softened, shaped or moulded by reheating. The bond between the molecules is very strong. Such as adhesives and polyurethane etc.(used in plastic paints)These plastics cannot be softened, reshape and remounld. Since plastics do not undergo significant chemical changed, they become mouldable after reheating. The bond between the molecules is very weak. Such as polythene, bottles, toys etc.Thermosetting plastics Thermoplastic Thermoplastics
