>> The sound of her son chok-ing on his own blood will be stuck in her mind forever KESHIA J V RENSBURG>> [email protected]

The gurgling noises her son made minutes before his death will haunt her for the rest of her days. This is the heart-

wrenching memory Koekie Whitehead wakes up with every morning when she thinks back to that fateful day when her son Nelson Vorster was killed in a road accident alleg-edly caused by a Police official based at the Seshego Police Station. Five years later and still no charges have been brought against the official.

That while the preliminary report pointed to both culpable homicide and reckless driving charges that would be investigated. It is also alleged that the official was only in possession of a learner’s licence and driving a state owned car without being accompanied by a licensed driver.

Out of pure desperation Whitehead is now planning on taking civil action against the Saps for the allegedly negligence allegedly demonstrated during this investigation or lack thereof.

After contacting the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) the allegations were investigated and Whitehead was guar-

anteed an arrest in the near future. Upon our enquiry Polokwane Observer the IPID was unable to comment as the arrest had not taken place yet and the investigation is still on-going.

The accident took place in March of 2009 when Whitehead and her son, two of her daughters, her son-in-law and her grandchild where involved in a horrific accident whilst returning from a funeral in Mogwadi. White-head explains the events leading up to the head-on-collision between the vehicle they were travelling in and a Nissan Almera that the police officer was driving.

“The Policeman swerved into the way of oncoming traffic to avoid hitting a stationary vehicle next to the road.” She explains that he jerked his vehicle into their lane and collided head-on with the Volkswagen Fox her family was travelling in.

“When the vehicle came to a standstill I realised that I was the only conscious person in the car and that everyone else had lost consciousness due to their severe injuries. She called out to her children but there was no response. She also then noticed that both her legs were broken and she couldn’t move. Smelling the vehicle burning made this ordeal so much worse.

”After the accident the Police man got out of his car as his injuries were not as serious, but did not bother to try and free any of us from the burning car.”

A truck driver stopped and with the help of other bystanders attempted to cut the family from the wreckage after extinguishing the fire

with a portable hydrant from the truck. Vorster, the driver of the Volkswagen, was

the most critically injured. He suffered severe internal bleeding because the engine of the car had landed up on his lap.

As Vorster could not be cut from the wreck-age, Whitehead crawled to the drivers’ side of the vehicle to be with her son who at that stage was busy choking on his own blood.” The autopsy report done on Vorster revealed the cause of death to have been exsanguina-tion due to internal bleeding caused by a mo-tor vehicle accident.

Lt Eddie Morema, Spokesperson for the Mogwadi Police Station says the case has been handed over to the state prosecutor, although he is unsure of when this was done.

“I am having a very hard time getting to the bottom of this,” he said. When asked about a rumour re-garding the investigat-ing officer mistakenly filing the docket be-fore the investigation had been completed, Morema said he would look into the allega-tions but added the case is now out of his hands and had to be handled by the State Prosecutor.

YOLANDE NEL>>[email protected]

In her Tuesday reply to Premier Stan Mathabata’s State of the Province address to the

Legislature last Thursday, Demo-cratic Alliance (DA) Leader in the Legislature Desiree van der Walt expressed the belief that he was wrong about the true state of unemployment in Limpopo.

In his address to an audi-ence that filled the legislative chamber to capacity, Mathabatha referred to the latest Labour Force Survey of StatsSA showing that the official unemployment rate in Limpopo was at 16,9% which represented a 2,2% decrease compared to 19,1% of the corre-sponding period in 2012. “This is the lowest unemployment rate in the country. This 2,2% decrease in unemployment is attributed to government’s roll-out of massive infrastructure.”

Van der Walt further said that considering the true level of unemployment one needed to account for those people who had been unemployed for so long that they had given up on looking for work. “Economists call them ‘discouraged work seekers’. Unfortunately the Premier ignored these people when he reported on Limpopo’s unemployment rate last

week. When he said that Limpopo has the lowest unemployment rate at 16%, he was telling a blatant lie. Instead, he should have reported the real unemployment rate, which includes discouraged work seekers. The real rate is at 35%.”

Mathabata, she said, decided to ignore 20% of his own province’s people – those who had given up on looking for work. It was difficult to imagine that Mathabata and the ANC could fix this problem if they did not even report on affected persons in the State of the Prov-ince address, she stated.

“Of course, in the Western Cape, the DA-run government thinks of everyone. Where Lim-popo’s true unemployment rate stands at 35%, the Western Cape has the lowest unemployment rate when considering all the people at 22%. We are systematically tack-ling that problem to keep reducing the rate of unemployment. Unfor-tunately, here in Limpopo, those that have given up on looking for work are ignored and no solutions are offered.”

She continued predicting that Mathabata could continue pretending that the unemploy-ment rate was only 16% but on elections day would see what happened when people were forgotten.

Wednesday, 19 February 2014Jacques Nell is arrested at his home in Pretoria for alleged business irregularities and fraud committed against Absa to the value of nearly R10 million. The arrest is made by the Hawks who from early on in the case notified the media that they would be opposing bail as Nell is seen as a flight risk.Thursday:Nell makes his first appearance in the Polo-kwane Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Janine Ungerer. State prosecutor, Adv Jackie Mabasa from early on appears resolute to put forth some very difficult questions for Nell. The case is postponed to Friday.Friday:The most action packed day in court yet. The longer sitting than normal sees various discrepancies in his initial statement ques-tioned and pointed out to Ungerer. She warns Nell early on in the court proceedings that he should not underestimate her intelligence or think she is dumb. See further down in the article for a list of these discrepancies. The case is again postponed and Nell’s wife Lucille sobs heart-wrenchingly at the idea of her husband spend-ing the weekend behind bars. Saturday and Sunday: Nell spends the weekend in prison.Monday:The case is post-poned to Tuesday because Mabasa is absent from work due to illness. Drama en-sues when Nell yells “Amandla” at the top of his voice while exiting the court room. Ungerer does not take kindly to this display of politics and assures Nell that he will not be allowed using her courtroom as a political

battlefield or platform. He in turn replies with an apology for his behaviour stating that it has come to his attention that the Democratic Alli-ance is currently busy with a smear campaign against him in the hopes of tarnishing his reputation and ruining his life. Tuesday:Mabasa remains on sick leave. Uproar rears its head when Nell, wearing an African National Congress shirt and carrying a Bible under his arm, is brought into the dock. Case again postponed to Wednesday. Wednesday (yesterday)More discrepancies are brought forward by Mabasa who handles the bail application cross-examination. At the time of going to press the court case is adjourned for lunch.

‘Amandla’Jacques Nell still behind bars

Alleged discrepancies in the initial statement made by Nell during his arrest. According to Mabasa these incon-sistencies point to why Nell is seen as a flight risk:Proof that he has applied for various positions overseas whilst he says he has no plans to leave the country.Nell, when asked during his first appearance whether he had been abroad recently, initially said he had not. When confronted with recent visits to both Mauritius and Maputu (Mozambique) he said that he didn’t know that the two destinations were re-garded as being abroad.Nell initially reported to the Hawks that he has only one pass-port yet evidence of a second, German passport in Nell’s name was found. Nell’s wife’s uncle is currently residing in Germany as well.Nell told the Hawks in his initial questioning that he has no money yet it has been established that he is either a sharehold-er or a director of more than five registered companies, a fact he failed to mention previously. Pertaining to the sale of Nell’s Polokwane residence questioning revealed that a local businessman had bought the property and, after the transaction was concluded, allegedly paid additional funds into the accounts of both Nell and his wife. Nell could not give an explanation for the supposed additional payments made.

Vodacom through their Change the World volunteer programme donated 20

Amalooloo prefabricated toilets to the value of R120 000 to Moime Primary School in the Tzaneen area last Wednesday.

Dilapidated, unhygienic and unsafe conditions were some of the factors that prompted Voda-com to act swiftly and rescue the situation.

“We came here to do an inspection of the toilets and it revealed grim and shocking conditions, even showing that the toilets were host to a family of snakes adding to the already alarming issues of sanitation.” Vodacom Spokesperson, Suraya Hamdulay said.

“We decided to tackle this lack of the most basic of human rights.

This upliftment project will not only provide improved hygiene standards, but will also help re-store dignity to the learners.

The toilets will eliminate sanitation-related diseases and provide for hand-washing under running water with soap, added Hamdulay.

During the handover ceremony three computers, books for the library, internet connection, data services through Vodacom Limpopo region and a telephone connection were also donated to the school.

Long awaited construction is about to commence on houses in Extension 100, the sustain-able human settlement project announced in 2008 by then MEC of Corporative Governance, Hu-man Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. Coghsta Spokes-person Motupa Selomo said the department has already appointed a contractor for the development of the housing phase and that they are now in the last stages of finalising the business plan. “As soon as the plan is finalised, construction on the housing phase will commence. I cannot provide

an exact date as yet, but it will be soon,” he said.

Selomo added that construc-tion of the roads, storm water and sewage systems have long been completed.

The sod turning for Ext 100 took place on 8 April 2008 at a ceremony where then Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, former Premier Sello Moloto and Nkoana-Mashabane were present. The project entails the building of 661 houses in Bendor consisting of high density houses of 50 m² each. One hundred and sixty-eight units will be built for households with an income of less than R3 500 a month and 168 units for the middle class income group such as teachers and police officers.

WARREN BLUNT>>[email protected]

Polokwane has a long road ahead to be-come a ‘Smart City’ as envisaged by the Executive Mayor, Freddy Greaver when

one looks at the shocking appearance of the city in general when driving around the inner city and surrounding suburbs.

The cleanliness of Polokwane leaves much to be desired considering all the litter lying around in the Central Business District (CDB), the industrial areas and along the taxi routes to and from the city. Not only will one notice litter lying around everywhere but also the obvious state of decay regarding roads, parks,

sidewalks and storm water drains.Compared to some of the biggest cities in

the country, Polokwane lags far behind when it comes down to a neat appearance and this can be attributed to the lack of pride by the resi-dents of the city and slow removal of waste, cutting of grass and other services rendered by the municipality. A big contributing factor is the random dumping of litter by thoughtless members of the public.

Certain members of the community have commented that Polokwane has no chance of becoming a ‘Smart City’ if normal refuse collection and garden services cannot be done, let alone bigger services like maintaining the roads, ensuring adequate water and electricity

Polokwane’s general state untidiness can by reflected by the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism premises in Suid Street that is overgrown with weeds and long grass. As the implementing agent of environmental issues in the province, Ledet should be setting an example on how to keep their premises neat and tidy to the rest of business entities situated nearby.

The Manager Communications and Market-ing at Polokwane Municipality, Tidimalo Chuene said there is a team that deals with grass cutting around the city with a clear plan in terms of days and areas to be attended to. She added that the frequent rainfall this season means areas that were cut at the beginning of the year have already re-grown.

“The municipality will continue with the cutting of grass and other maintenance. The Polokwane Municipality is committed to keep the city as clean and attractive as possible, as a way of sustaining our good image and appeal which was boosted by our recent host-ing of the Orange Chan tournament,” Chuene elaborated.

Weeds growing out of a storm water drain and long grass on the side of the pavement in Plein Street behind the Provincial Hospital are signs that the Polokwane Municipality are neglecting to keep the streets of the city neat and tidy.

Revolt is on the rise in yet another part of the province where a frustrated com-munity is threatening with protest action

next week if a government, ruling party and alliance partners who have seemingly been ignoring pleas for electricity provision do not adhere to their plight. Adding to perceived in-jury is the undertaking of an entire community to withhold votes in the upcoming elections if their demands are not met.

With the blue wave of the Democratic Alli-ance (DA) sweeping across the province and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) forma-tion rising to offer an alternative vote, another service delivery protest is the last thing the rul-ing party in Limpopo can afford less than three months to the elections. Although the turn-out at Sunday’s national launch of the DA’s elections manifesto and this Sunday’s mass gathering of a solid red EFF horde expected in Seshego may not be something the ruling party leadership would want to admit to as worrisome contributors to overwhelming point-ers when ballot box percentages get calculated in the end, it remains indicative of the levels of growing discontent with the African National Congress (ANC) government.

According to Mageva Crisis Committee spokesperson Enock Mahlaule they believed their letter dated 7 Au-gust 2013 had indeed reached the Mayor and Municipal Manager of Greater Giyani Municipal-ity, the ward 24 councillor, the Executive Mayor of Mopani, the Dzumeri Traditional Office, the Lawrence Mabunda branch and the sub-region as well as the Secretary General of the ANC, the General Secretaries of alliance partners Congress of South African Trade Unions (Co-satu) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), the Public Protector, the Premier and the President.

Thus far their requests have not been taken seriously and they only have reference number 11342 provided by a representative of the Premier’s Office, the only feedback to confirm that their letter had been received, indicated Mahlaule.

The only positive action arising from it has thus far been from the DA taking up the battle on their behalf. DA Premier’s candidate Langa

Bodlani spent Tuesday afternoon with the Mageva Crisis Committee. He afterwards said the community has taken a decision to give the government until March to address the matter otherwise they would be resorting to protest action. Bodlani indicated that he would join the protest march on condition that the community got permission from the local municipality to stage the action and it was kept within legal boundaries. “The DA will retract support if the protest turns violent,” he stressed.

In the letter Mageva Crisis Committee Chairperson Evans Hlungwani and Secretary Joe Mthombeni stressed the government of national unity was a complete failure, as they have been fighting for electricity since the dawn of democracy in South Africa.

In their letter they further mentioned that Mageva Village was given electricity in 1995, but the priority list of Greater Giyani Mu-nicipality indicated the date as 1997, with the undertaking that the extensions would have electricity in 2014.

“Should the priority list be correctly typed it was supposed to read as follows: Mageva Village was electrified on or during 1995 there-

Rising revolt, protest action- more to come

fore the extension referred to above should get electricity on or during 2011/2012 financial year.”

They continued to write “Kindly be informed that the Mageva extension was demarcated during 1996 of which now we are 16 years old without electricity.”

The authors further referred to an engage-ment with then Greater Giyani Mayor Doris Mathebula in 2010 during which she promised to provide them with electricity during the 2011/12 financial year. Reference is further

made to her apology with regards to the typing error in the electricity priority list.

Mahlaule stressed they would give the municipality until the beginning of next week to start with the electrification process, as per earlier undertaking, before they would apply for permission to go over to protest action.

If the municipality did not speed up the process the community has threatened to withhold their votes in the general elections in May, he concluded.

*Allocations of hundreds of unspent millions apparently being taken back by National Treasury amid the lack of basic services in areas where it is needed most as well as an increase in violent protests across Limpopo contribute to a sad state of affairs that the people of the province have to live with. The fact that the province has improved from a R1,7 billion overdraft to a cash position of R4,4 billion as at the end of January this year, does not contribute posi-tively either to the dire situation the province finds itself in. Then service delivery protests are a small price to pay for a government seemingly failing to put the human element above other priorities and maintaining the perfect balance between adequately capacitat-ing those responsible for good and clean governance and delivering much needed basic services to a deserving nation.

Friday’s Capricorn District Primary Schools athlet-ics meeting in Polokwane

received no media coverage as the journalist from Polokwane Observer was denied access by the overzealous security supervi-sor at the main gate of the old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Upon arrival at the stadium, the journalist produced his press card to the official from the Edu-cation Department of the Cap-ricorn District and was granted access only to be told by the supervisor from MMP Security & Special Events that journalists must pay to cover the event. As a sports journalist, who has been covering numerous sporting

events over the years, access to a primary schools athletic event has always been granted after producing your press card.

This seems to no longer be the case as after further enquir-ies with stadium management at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex, Polokwane Observ-er were informed that official accreditation must be granted before any journalist may cover future athletics meetings at the stadium. The crux of the matter is why the newspaper was not informed that they must apply for accreditation prior to the athletics meeting.

After bringing up the issue with the Provincial Schools Athletics Chairperson Lazarus Rasebotsa, he apologised for any inconvenience caused on Friday

and added access was never meant to be denied to journalists covering the event. He prom-ised to bring the matter to the attention of the management at MMP Security & Special Events and will inform security person-nel that journalists only have to produce their press cards to cover any future schools athlet-ics meeting.

The Limpopo Provincial Primary and High Schools Athlet-ics meetings are scheduled for tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday at the old Peter Mokaba Sta-dium and Rasebotsa welcomed journalists to cover the events as long as they can produce a valid press card. “Journalists do not need to apply for any special accreditation to cover the meet-ing,” Rasebotsa concluded.

Well- researched book opens eyes to situation in Occupied TerritoriesWARREN BLUNT>>[email protected]

A comprehensive book that deals with the core issues underlying the conflict between the powerful Israel state and the Palestin-ian people in the Holy Land was launched in Polokwane on Tuesday at the Library Gardens Auditorium.

The book launch coincides with the tenth anniversary of Israeli Apartheid Week that is held annually across 250 cities worldwide from 10 to 16 March. The book titled “Why Israel? The Anatomy of Zionist Apartheid – A South African Perspective” is published by Media Review Network (MRN) in association with Porcupine Press, and co-authored by Suraya Dadoo and Firoz Osman.

Commenting on the book on Tuesday, Da-doo said Israel’s military occupation of Pales-tine is horrifically reminiscent of South Africa’s apartheid past. “Israeli apologists are shocked that the Zionist state is being compared to Apartheid South Africa. In response Zionists ask: “Why Israel?”

The two authors of the book are both members of MRN that was established in 1996. MRN gives Palestinians a voice in South Africa by exposing Zionist Apartheid, countering Israeli propaganda, and attempts to prosecute Israeli war criminals in South Africa. MRN re-searchers have spoken at various conferences and seminars throughout the world to highlight the brutal occupation of Palestine by Israel.

Dadoo and Osman comprehensively answer that question by examining how and why apartheid applies to the crisis in Palestine by using expert academic analysis, online com-mentaries, articles and blogs of well-known and highly respected activists and human rights organisations, as well as NGOs with extensive on-the-ground experience in the region.

The result is an encyclopaedic, easy to understand investigation of Israel’s colonisation of the Occupied Territories and its corrupting influence on the world.

Volgens ‘n kenner is dié proses oneffektief.

Hy het my eerste gehelp. Toe hy wou teruggaan vir Riaan, was hy reeds weg.”

Hy was ’n stil en diep mens. Ons kon vir ure oor ernstige dinge in die lewe sit en gesels. Boonop was hy baie hulpvaardig en liefdevol,” beskryf Van der Walt hom.

Benewens sy ouers laat Riaan sy broer, Karel, en suster, Louise, agter. ’n Roudiens word Sater-dag om 10:00 vanuit die Gereformeerde Kerk, Mooifontein in Kempton Park gehou.

LTA to host 20 international buyers HERBERT RACHUENE>>[email protected]

Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) will host today (Thursday) 20 local, regional and international buyers in the business and corporate events industry following a Meetings Africa 2014 gath-ering held in Gauteng earlier this week.

A media release issued by the LTA stated that a delegation, led by Seipati Tlaka, act-ing Chief of the agency’s newly established Provincial Conventions Bureau earlier this week visited the mega gathering characterised by business networking opportunities aimed at providing educational and networking oppor-tunities for the South African business events industry.

The group will arrive at Polokwane Inter-national Airport to be welcomed by Executive Mayor of Polokwane Freddy Greaver.

“From there the group will be taken to the Protea Hotel Ranch Resort for lunch, which will be followed by the site inspection and lion encounter. The group will then depart for Karibu Holiday Resort in Tzaneen for site in-spection and overnight. The following day, the group will have breakfast and then depart to Magoesbaskloof to participate in canopy tours followed by a short stop at Entabeni Private Game Reserve for another site inspection and game drive,” the statement read.

Mike Tauatsoala, LTA Spokesperson said: “These are people who sell packages to international tourists in their countries of operations. By so doing we will showcase what the province has on offer as far as tourism is concerned. We hope that these 20 buyers will want to bring more of their mega interna-tional events to South Africa and Limpopo in particular.”

The efforts of the Search and Res-cue team from the Mopani Tactical Rescue and Rapid Intervention Crew (TRRIC) proved not to be in vain after an 82-year-old woman, who went missing for nearly 72 hours from her home in Maromo-fasi village, was rescued yet died in hospital later.

Maria Shai went missing last Friday and her family reported the incident late on Saturday.

When an initial search was unsuccessful, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Search and Rescue Unit in Mopani was called to the scene and the TRRIC in Mopani was requested to assist with the search. After an extended search, the pensioner was spotted last Monday on the slope of a steep embankment, down which she had fallen, not far from her home.

Shai was found alive but in critical condition due to severe dehydration and hypoglycaemia. She had also suffered fractures to her left forearm and left ankle. She passed away last Wednesday in the Letaba Hospital as a result of her ordeal.

Members of the SAPS and

Mopani TRRIC expressed their sadness afterwards after hear-ing about Shai’s passing on. The rescuers had stabilised Shai at the scene before she was transported to Letaba Hospital and en route to hospital, she had opened her eyes and regained consciousness.

The Spokesperson at the Department of Health and Social Development, Adele van der Linde hailed the heroic, selfless and undying efforts of the Search and Rescue team, paramedics and SAPS who assisted with the rescue of Shai. She sent her condolences to the Shai family and praised the fighting spirit of the pensioner who, against all odds survived the initial ordeal and unfortunately passed away in hospital afterwards.

“The Search and Rescue personnel of the department as well as the SAPS usually have the unpleasant task of finding corpses of persons that have already drowned or who have been at-tacked by animals such as croco-diles, attending to people affected by adverse weather conditions and those involved in accidents. It is sad that the pensioner passed on but finding her alive after an intensive search is a morale boost-er for these hard-working men and women,” van der Linde said.

CRIME shortsPublic violence takes a turn for the worseA total of 63 people were arrested after community members of Mo-letlane village at Zebediela went on the rampage and allegedly looted and burnt five shops owned by Chinese businessmen. The violence allegedly stems from an incident on Saturday (22 Febru-ary) at approximately 18:30 when a 21-year old man was stabbed to death following an argument with a Chinese shop owner. Ronel Otto, Spokesperson for the Limpopo Police says the suspect was ar-rested on a charge of murder. “On Sunday at approximately 17:00, members of the community mobilised and looted five shops belonging to Chinese owners be-fore setting them alight. Nobody was injured or killed during these incidents, but extensive damage was caused to the buildings,” says Otto. The suspects, 43 men and 20 women, were arrested on charges of public violence and arson and are expected to appear in the Magatle Magistrate’s Court later this week.

Mob justice becomes prevalentAt Apel in Sekhukhune seven suspects were arrested after they allegedly set alight five houses and three vehicles over the week-end. Members of the community

accused three people of squander-ing money which is being raised for a community project. Nobody was killed or injured during the in-cidents. The suspects will appear in the Sekhukhune Magistrates Court. Ronel Otto, Spokesperson for the Limpopo Police says mem-bers of the Public Order Policing Unit have been deployed in both these areas to monitor the situ-ation and no further incidents of violence have been reported. Joint operation held at taxi rankA successful joint operation was held at the Polokwane Taxi Rank on Monday after members from the Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Canine Unit, the Mounted Unit, Polokwane Traffic officials, Saps Clusters, 10111, Westen-burg Police and the Limpopo Port of Entry Unit joined forces in an attempt to flush out illegalities at the rank. Ntobeng Phala, Polok-wane Police Spokesperson says all involved joined in and sought out weapons, drugs, counterfeit goods, unlicensed vehicles and taxi’s that do not have the proper certificates or permits. During the operation a huge amount of dagga was found as well as 79 counterfeit DVDs; a fine was issued to an illegal hawker, two illegal immigrants were arrested and three persons for possession of and dealing in dagga.

YOLANDE NEL>>[email protected]

A bright blue tidal wave marked the launch of the elections mani-festo of the Democratic Alliance (DA), which opted for the vibrant political arena of the province as venue for a national gathering considered the biggest ever party event on Limpopo soil.

For Sunday’s launch party, which attracted thousands of supporters, the DA pulled out all stops when a host of national leaders converged on Polokwane to join their local counterparts for a programme highlighting the party’s electioneering campaign paying forward the slogans of “Together for change” and “Together for jobs”. Armed with a copy of the manifesto, DA Leader Helen Zille ascended the stage to address a packed arena at Polok-wane Showgrounds for a two-hour live transmission commencing at around noon.

She started her address by saying they were up and running and ready to fight a historic elec-tion campaign. “Change is in the air.” She continued saying there was a new mood sweeping the country. Despair was making way for hope and political formations of the past were changing.

“We have come so far since the dark days of apartheid. In those times, our country was deeply divided. People were oppressed. They suffered under an inhumane government.” Zille stressed that they would never forget the peo-ple and organisations who strug-gled together against apartheid. “We are proud to count many of them in the DA’s ranks today.”

Referring to the turning of tides she said things changed in Polok-wane in December 2007 when the

DA’s biggest ever bluetidal wave

African National Congress (ANC) elected a new leadership. Presi-dent Thabo Mbeki was recalled from office months later and then charges against Pres Jacob Zuma on 783 counts of corruption were dropped. “That was the moment when a great political movement lost its sense of direction. It was hijacked by leaders who care more about themselves than the people they are meant to serve.”

According to her the ANC of today was not the late Nelson Mandela’s ANC. In her view they were two different parties which just happened to have the same name. She indicated that “a better life for all” has just become “a better life for some”. The good story, she said, ended in 2007. Zille further quoted 1,4 million more South Africans having joined the ranks of the unemployed since Zuma was elected President.

She further raised the point that change and jobs were possi-ble. “Six million real and perma-nent jobs and within our grasp if we seize the moment at this election,” Zille said, adding that job creation was only possible if corruption was cut.

She stressed that they would stop politicians and their families doing business with government and tender processes would be opened up to public scrutiny. “These are not just promises. We have already taken these steps where we govern. This is why DA governments receive the cleanest audits, get the best scores for ser-vice delivery to the poor, and have the lowest unemployment rate in the country. The bottom line is that clean government is essential to beat poverty.”

Zille referred to crime, like cor-ruption, killing the economy and continued saying people did not feel safe because they have lost faith in the Police to protect them. Increas-ingly people felt they needed to be protected from the Police. “The Police brutality of the last five years reminds us of a darker time in our nation’s history.”

She concluded saying the future they were building was a place where talent, innovation and hard work were more important than political connections. “A place where every individual has the power and the freedom to become the best they can be. This is our offer to you. Give us a chance to make South Africa a better place. A chance to get our country back on track. Stand with the DA on 7 May.”

A breathtaking performance by a group of talented artists was brought to stage recently during the Golden Diva’s matinee show held at the Library Gardens Auditorium.

Renowned playwright and director Selaelo Maredi skilfully led the group of feisty perform-ers in a show that visibly tickled every single funny bone in audience members’ bodies. Although the attendance of the shows was not what the performers had wished for they definitely did not let that deter them from giv-ing the best and most emotional performances of their lives.

The shows consisting of mainly female performers and thorn among the uniquely cultivated group of roses ensured the stage dynamic played out perfectly. The play tells the story of a group of feisty women who are all

Golden performances by Golden Divasbound together by their love and relationship with one man and how they subsequently take their revenge on a poor man who isn’t even the object of their affection.

Attitude is the key to having a successful relationship with your inner beautiful you. Performers from the Golden Diva’s stage play held at the Library Gardens Auditorium re-cently ensured fans were in stitches with the hilarious antics of these talented local lasses. >> Premier Stan Mathabatha and ruling party called on to ur-gently act on four municipalitiesYOLANDE NEL>>[email protected]

The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in Limpopo called on Premier Stan Mathabatha and the ruling party to

urgently act on four municipalities in the prov-ince and provide speedy clarity on allegations levelled against the recently elected African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Secretary in relation to his suspension by the provincial tourism agency.

In a press release Samwu Provincial Sec-retary Simon Mathe stated the Premier and ANC were aware of the shenanigans taking place at Mogalakwena Municipality where ANC councillors have allegedly been conniving with the opposition to block or pass resolutions in defiance of the party. The Municipal Manager, he said, had been challenging a High Court order setting aside his appointment in defiance of the intervention by Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) MEC.

At Elias Motsoaledi Municipality, he said, the Mayor was refusing to sign an appointment let-ter of an acting Municipal Manager in defiance of a Council resolution. He further alleged that at Lephalale Municipality the implementation of a forensic report arising from alleged cor-ruption in the awarding of a tender had been covered up. With regards to Mopani District Municipality, he said the municipality had been struggling in terms of financial management. “The fleet service provider there was forced to take back all his vehicles due to default payment by the municipality. The municipality owes almost all its local municipalities water

related payments due to non-payment of what is due to those municipalities. This has left those municipalities in dire financial challenges as they are forced to use their budgets to pro-vide water to communities. We are therefore calling on the Premier and the ANC to redeploy the Executive Mayor and Municipal Manager to bring stability in that municipality.”

He further said Samwu welcomed the outcomes of the ANC’s Provincial Conference, congratulating the entire collective on their election to leading the province, rebuilding the movement, fighting tribalism and factions and bringing unity within the mass democratic structures.

“However, we also call for speedy clarity on the allegations levelled against the elected Provincial Secretary of the ANC, comrade Knox Seabi, in relation to his suspension at the Limpopo Tourism Agency. It is our belief that no senior leader of the ANC must have a dark cloud hanging over him when resuming and executing such an important position in the movement.”

At the same time Mathe stressed that Sam-wu in Limpopo was annoyed and disturbed by the manner in which Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) national office bear-ers were handling the issue pertaining to the suspension of General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and of a constitutional requirement for the convening of a special national congress. They demanded, among others, a special national congress no later than April 2014, “failing which we are going to lobby other provinces and affiliates to mobilise all our members to occupy Cosatu House and frog march those who are not serving the interest of the work-ers”, the immediate lifting of the suspension of the General Secretary of Cosatu and called for the convening of a special national congress of the nine affiliates and other members of Cosatu to map the way forward, including rebuilding the federation.

One of the issues raised during the South African Local Government Association’s (Salga) provincial Municipal Managers Forum is the un-certainty of which roads belong to municipali-ties and which are the responsibility of Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL).

Municipal managers and chief financial of-ficers from municipalities across Limpopo met at Bolivia Lodge on Friday to discuss issues that affect municipalities. These included the state of municipal finances; mentorship of municipal managers; wage curves and election readiness.

Matters for discussion such as the state of municipalities had to be withdrawn from the agenda as representatives of the Department of Corporate Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) were not present.

Salga Provincial Executive Officer, Thapelo Matlala made it clear that municipalities face the issue of disputing the responsibility of certain roads in the province. He referred to letters written to RAL requesting the entity to furnish Salga with a list of provincial roads which were recently transferred to district municipalities together with their asset register.

“It is clear that the municipalities are not at fault. Municipalities cannot receive a qualified audit as a result of incomplete asset registers. But how can they add something to their asset register if they are not sure whether it is their responsibility or not?” he asked.

RAL responded in a letter dated 24 January stating: “RAL consulted all the affected district municipalities to arrange for the transfer of the affected roads and to take responsibility for ownership and management of the roads. However, all of the municipalities declined in-dicating insufficient budgets and capacity that they could not be able to maintain the roads network within their jurisdiction. Therefore no transfer of roads from RAL was done until now. All declared provincial roads are still under the ownership and jurisdiction of RAL.”

A representative of RAL confirmed during the meeting that a report to clarify all roads will be available next Friday.

In a presentation done by the Independ-ent Electoral Commission municipalities was informed that after the second registration week 73 467 registrations under the age of 30 were counted. In the five districts registrations were reported as follows: Capricorn (30,65%), Sekhukhune (24,73%), Waterberg (21,94%), Mopani (15,12%) and Vhembe (7,5%). A total of 908 prisoners in Limpopo registered to vote.

>> It makes me feel good knowing I’m helping at least one person a day. >> This is a passion; it’s so much more than a job.KESHIA J V RENSBURG>> [email protected]

Ever since his first job, working as a security guard in the control section of the Limpopo Legislature, the Head of the

Polokwane Police’s Communication Depart-ment, Capt Ntobeng Phala realised that he wanted more.

“I started noticing all the top dogs of the Police attending functions at the legislature with their shiny shoes and thick leather belts; I wanted to look like that. The cleanliness these men showed in their day to day work made me realise instantly that where they are, is where I want to be.” Phala quickly came to the realisation that he wanted to be more than a security guard and joined the South African Police in April 1991 at the age of 24.

Phala started his Police career in the then Guard Division, now known as the Port Security Services Unit, served as a Police official in the local legislature, became a court orderly and then a detective.

Phala says it is this road of where he started and where he ended up that makes him extremely suitable for his job in com-munications. “I started at the bottom and worked my way up the ladder

whilst being exposed to each section of crime, making it very easy to discuss Police matters and procedures with the media due to having been there and done that in most situations that I now report on.” Phala explained. He added that a good communications official at the Police needs to know the policing environ-ment at large.

Claiming his rank as WO in 2002 whilst still working as a detective, Phala soon realised he was on the up and up.

His career in Police communications began as the head of the then Capricorn Sector, which has since been phased out and replaced by what is known today as the Polokwane Cluster. Phala then worked his way up the communication ladder, again finding himself excelling in his day to day duties and upping his rank to Captain. His official appointment as the Head of Communication for the Polokwane Cluster came in May of 2013.

Being happily married helps Phala be suc-cessful in the day to day running of his career

in the Police. Happy people at home are happy people in the workplace. He has been happily married since 1996 and four apples of his eye came forth out of this union. His first born is a girl, currently studying towards an Accounting degree at a University in

Pretoria, followed by a boy (16), and two more girls, aged 11 and three.

“My children keep me grounded,” he admitted. Referring to things like having to search for car keys toddler cunningly hid under the bed, he said these remind him that being a father, a mate and a provider for his family give him the energy he needs to tackle crime in Polo-kwane every day.

It is all systems go for a tidal wave of solid red to take Seshego by storm this Sunday when the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)

are expected to launch their elections mani-festo in Limpopo.

EFF Provincial Convenor Michael Mathebe told Polokwane Observer they were ready for the event that would initially have coincided with the launch of the structure in the prov-ince. However, they would be making a clear distinction between the two and would only be launching the manifesto this weekend. The launch party of the structure in Limpopo would be reserved for after the elections.

According to Mathebe they expected 10 000 of their current 47 000 paid-up members from 543 EFF branches across the province at Sun-

day’s event. Membership figures have exceed-ed their expectations for they initially expected only 30 000 members to join the EFF in the province within six months of the party being established in July last year, he indicated.

He reflected on more than 50 000 EFF members converging on Tembisa on the week-end for the EFF’s national elections manifesto launch while the African National Congress (ANC) “suffered a very serious embarrass-ment” when they managed a 10 000 turn-out at a nearby venue. The ANC, he predicted, would be very careful to have a repeat of the weekend.

Mathebe said Sunday’s crowd would be en-tertained by traditional dancers while a line-up of artists from elsewhere in South Africa had not been finalised thus far. The main address is expected to be delivered by EFF Commander in Chief Julius Malema.

Learners from Gen Joubert School in Polo-kwane were interested spectators at the Army Support Base Limpopo’s military parade held at the school on Friday.

The parade that forms part of this year’s Armed Forces’ Day was held nationally to com-memorate the sinking of the Troopship Mendi with the loss of 802 lives in 1917 during World War 1. Among the soldiers on board the Mendi were many black South Africans who were used mainly for stretcher bearing and non-combatant duties as they were not allowed to carry rifles at the time.

The Troopship Mendi sank off the British Isle of Wright en-route to France on 21 Febru-

ary 1917 following a collision with HMS Darro, resulting in the loss of life of about 616 brave South Africans who fought alongside the Allied Forces.

At least 607 of those that perished were black troops from the South African Native Labour Corps together with nine of their white countrymen. About 33 British crew members were also part of the fatalities.

This year’s Armed Forces’ Day is expected to be widely attended following the declara-tion that it will be celebrated every February in commemoration of the ill-fated HMS Mendi. All services and divisions of the military, including veterans took part in the parade on Friday en-suring a full scale display of the South African armed forces’ readiness, professionalism, agil-ity and excellence.

oorlaai is.Die bederf is moontlik gemaak deur Kansa

se Tough Living with Cancer (TLC)-program by die Polokwane Provinsiale Hospitaal se pediatriese saal.

What can be a wonderful journey for some moth-ers can be a scary one

for others as all the questions surrounding pregnancy and birth can at times seem daunting for expectant mothers.

With the month of Febru-ary being the official Pregnancy Awareness Month, Limpopo Medi-Clinic together with various other experts held a pregnancy workshop on Friday focussing the day completely on making the journey and the road pregnant mothers are travelling on a little bit smoother. Some of the services that were explained during the workshop include how things work in the hospital pertaining to things like the actual birth and extra ser-vices like neo-natal care and the treatment of premature babies, immunisations and even the De-partment of Labour who ensured all working mommies knew ex-actly how to claim Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits.

Istha McMillan, Client Services Manager for Medi-Clinic says the

day was a huge success and all involved enjoyed helping pave the way ahead for mothers-to-be.

Future mothers benefit from awareness event

Venita Botes and Sonnette Nieuwoudt share some quick words of wisdom with Jackie Shrives from Babygym during the Pregnancy Awareness Workshop held on Friday.

Teresa van Deventer of Dis-Chem’s clinic explains to expectant mother Khanyisa Sono exactly how immunisation works and the added benefit of being able to avoid long clinic queues or doctor’s appointments and simply book all immunisation appointments directly through Dis-Chem.

Not all moth-ers are lucky enough to go on paid mater-nity leave and thanks to senior administration officials from the Department of Labour the procedures of claiming UIF benefits were made simpler and easier. From left are Albert Radzilani, Mosibudi Kganyago and Nini Setshoane.

The Department of Labour on Monday announced that the annual wage increase for farm workers will become effective

from 1 March. In a statement released by the department

on Monday, Spokesperson of Labour, Johannes Mokou said the minimum wages will be ad-justed upwards to an hourly rate of R12,41, a 75c improvement from the previous R11,66.

“This goes to show how serious we as the department are in ensuring that the livelihood of vulnerable workers is improved drastically.

Those who receive their pay cheques on a weekly basis will receive R558,60, a R33,60 climb from the previous R525,00. Those get-ting their wages at the end of the month will pocket R2 420,41 from the previous R2 274,82. On ensuring that the employers comply with this increment, Mokou detailed a road map to be followed by the inspectorate to ensure 100% compliance,” Mokou says in a statement.

“There is a planned blitz inspection pro-gramme targeting farmers throughout the province and during this programme, every farmer will be inspected. During this pro-gramme all our boots, goggles and all will be set aside for a week or two, where our

inspectors will be glued on this sector and root out any mishap that may threaten our goal of achieving 100 percent compliance of this incre-ment and other pieces of labour legislations.”

“We have a database of all the problematic farmers throughout the province, and our inspectorate team has been briefed thoroughly on a plan to follow,” Mokou said.

He also added that Sectoral Determination covers the protection of workers in vulnerable sectors. “The determination sets minimum working hours, minimum wages, number of leave days and termination rules. It is reviewed annually by the Labour Minister” Mokou con-cluded.

Avid listeners to The Complimen-tary Breakfast, a popular Jaca-randa FM weekday show, had the opportunity to personally meet the faces behind the microphone on Friday when Mall of the North hosted a live broadcast of the show as part of presenter Rian van Heerden’s love tour.

Rian’s Love Tour was initiated by the presenter himself after a listener from Bela-Bela called him to ask that he get out of the studio and visit listeners through-out their broadcasting area. While celebrating Valentine’s Month,

Rian decided to call it the Rian’s Love Tour to tour across Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng to return the love that South Africa has given Jacaranda FM over the last 28 years.

Van Heerden interviewed several prominent persons, includ-ing Polokwane Executive Mayor Freddy Greaver and Miss Humanity International Katryn Barwise dur-ing the show. Polokwane residents opened their hearts and treated the breakfast team to snacks, drinks and especially biltong.

Rian’s Love Tour concluded their journey through Limpopo at Fusion Boutique Hotel on Friday evening.

An evening with delicious snacks, drinks and a spectacular show by South African illusionist, Stan Sussman marked the

launch of the third generation BMW X5 at Modern Autohaus on Thursday.

Synonymous to the type of vehicle guests arrived stylishly dressed to view the new Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) by BMW, which delivers outstanding luxury and unparalleled comfort in every regard and never fails to exceed expec-tations. The new X5 features a huge array of intelligent technologies that take efficiency and dynamism to a whole new level – even when it goes off-road. The X5’s superiority is also evident in its two new design worlds – Pure Experience and Pure Excellence. No matter whether you want to make a powerful impres-sion or prefer a look of understated sophisti-cation, there are plenty of design options for expressing your own personal style through the exterior and luxurious interior.

The first moment you meet face-to-face with the X5 your eyes will be instinctively drawn to its compelling design. Its expressive front with optional Adaptive LED headlights and the athletic side contours generate a masculine look that is beyond compare. The exclusive appearance will simply take your breath away.

Behind the steering wheel all the controls such as the iDrive Touch Controller are fully geared towards the driver and the overall clari-

ty of the design is a pleasure to behold. Should you find yourself in a traffic jam for instance, the optional Active Cruise control with stop and go function assumes control of the vehicle, au-tomatically moves forward, maintaining a safe distance to the car in front. Passengers at the back should prepare themselves to be awed by the overall sense of spaciousness in the new X5. They also enjoy that front-row feeling.

What impresses most on the new X5, is what hides beneath the hood. Five engine models are available – xDrive35i, xDrive50i, xDrive30d, xDrive40d and M50d.

All five engines are powerful and acceler-ate from 0 – 100 km/h under 7 seconds. The monster of the pack the M50d has greatly benefitted from the combined experience of the engineers of BMW M, whose expertise has ensured precision tuning between the drive, suspension and steering. Behind the wheel the M50d offers precise sporty handling for an exceptionally intense driving experience. The twin turbo engine has immensely satisfying acoustic and delivers a powerful output of 280 kW and a maximum torque of 740 Nm. This force is transferred directly to the road with optimal traction thanks to the intelligent xDrive four wheel drive. The 20” alloy wheels comple-ment the powerful engine by gripping firmly on any road surface.

The new BMW X5 has various safety fea-tures to keep all occupants safe. These include Dynamic Stability Control, Adaptive Headlights, Driving Assist, run flat indicator and Hill Decent Control.

Kleuters van Akademie Reformia bederf bejaardes

KESHIA J V RENSBURG>> [email protected]

Bulging biceps and straining arm muscles were the order of the day at the Lynx Arm Wrestling Championships that were hosted by Savannah Mall on Saturday.

Arm wrestlers from Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West flexed their mus-cles at the regional tournament in preparation for bigger things to come later this year. The South African Arm Wrestling Championships will be held at the end of March in Witbank.

During the course of the year the Lynx Arm Wrestling Club in Polokwane hosts a number of smaller competitions for fund raising towards various charities in the city. During Saturday’s event a total of R10 000 was raised towards the Arende Class for Children with Disabilities at Akademie Reformia.

Members of the public also had the chance to enter for Saturday’s championship which was held in the lower banking section at Savannah Mall. Hanco Nel from Nelspruit walked away with the overall title belt. In the club competition Brothers in Arms came out on top, with the Lynx Arm Wrestling Club a close second only four points behind the winners.

Liana Fourie from Lynx Arm Wrestling Club thanked Savannah Mall for providing a great venue in which to host the championship. She also expressed her gratitude towards the large number of spectators that supported the event.

>> Safety and Security month taking place in February.>> Join hands in the fight against crime.KESHIA J V RENSBURG>> [email protected]

The recent quarterly crime report of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster was headed by MEC for Safety,

Security and Liaison, Joyce Mashamba who highlighted various ways her department together with the Limpopo Police and various other key role players will be handling the fight against crime.

The progress report released by Mashamba during this meeting include projects scheduled for this year and for 2015, current challenges facing law enforcement, departments aiding them in their fight and Safety and Security Month taking place in February.

During her speech she explained the importance of Safety and Security month and elaborated on some of the activities that will be embarked upon during the month.

>>Anti-drug and substance abuse in schools.

>>Family re-organisation programme with religious groups.

>>Training: illegal mining.>>Provincial Youth Crime Prevention

Summit (See story elsewhere in Polokwane Observer).

>>Re-launch: Operation Isondlo on child maintenance.

>>Various crime awareness programmes.Various heads of departments, including

Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, Head of the Hawks Debero Molatjana and Polok-wane Executive Mayor Freddy Greaver were in

attendance.Mashamba angrily commented on the recent

uproars in various communities around Lim-popo which have come under the national and local media spotlight recently. “These protests have not only caused the loss of lives but it has also interfered with the rights of other citizens and has caused damage to public and private facilities. I can assure you all these occurrences are being thoroughly investigated and justice will be served. One of the measures for this includes the R100 000 reward for any informa-tion that leads to the arrest of the murderer/s of the young woman who was mutilated as this was one of the main reasons for the outbreak of violence in our communities.” In the fight against these protests the Police have imple-mented a mandatory Basic Crowd Management training course which is now being given to all new intakes in the Police. “These efforts will be reinforced by a dedicated detective team and legal officers to advise and assist Public Order Policing Units and Crime Intelligence Units,” Mashamba confirmed.

Challenges faced by the Limpopo Police were also pointed out during Mashamba’s speech, which include stakeholders needing

Mashamba heads crime progress report to understand the multi-faceted approach to

crime and realise that safety and fighting crime is not only the jobs of Police officials. The dis-crepancy between sentencing and the severity of offences were also discussed. This pertains to instances like, for example, illegal liquor outlet operators who are arrested for non-compliance to licence conditions but continue to offend because of petty monetary fines. Mashamba explained that one of the reasons for this is because the Provincial Liquor Bill has not yet been enacted and the province is still forced to use the Liquor Act from the old regimes. Further issues placing strain on the fight against crime include non compliance with legislation, policies and procedures which in turn defeats the objectives of community policing initiatives, poor resourcing of commu-nity policing structures and lastly inadequacy of community support and resources for Victim Empowerment facilities at Police stations.

Plans for combating these challenges will include Mashamba’s department continuing to fulfil its oversight function over the SAPS, in collaboration with other role players that will ensure the strengthening and functionality of community safety structures. Facilitating and implementing public education campaigns and ensuring community mobilisation in the fight against crime.

Mashbamba will also in the future be host-ing a summit to review the provincial crime

strategy and to ensure it implementation, whilst aiding the Police in maintaining and promoting good relations between themselves and the communities they police. “I will also be assessing the effectiveness of visible policing and constitute the Provincial Secretariat for Police. Other effective combating of crime from our side will come in the form of conduct-ing research on the main roots of crime and criminality and conducting focussed interven-tions on erupting crimes that are prevalent in Limpopo,” she said.

Measures which will ensure proper access to justice was also discussed and adopted. One of these milestones concerning justice in Limpopo is the establishment of the Limpopo Division of the High Court, which according to Mashamba will take form by the High Court in Polokwane becoming operational from the onset of the 2015/2016 financial year. Another bonus mentioned during the meeting which is sure to bring a smile to many maintenance beneficiaries faces, is the decentralisation of the payment of maintenance from the National Office to Courts. “When payments are effected immediately the money will be deposited into the courts’ accounts. This will reduce instances where beneficiaries in the past waited for a week or two for the money to be deposited into their accounts. In conclusion Mashamba urged all partners to join hands and intensify the fight against crime.”

HERBERT RACHUENE>>[email protected]

The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Merriam Ramadwa has called on Lim-popo municipalities to ensure that at least 15% of their Municipal Infrastruc-

ture Grant is spent on providing sport facilities to serve communities.

Ramadwa spoke during the hand-ing over of sport equipment meant for various schools in the province. The handover of the equipment, meant for various sporting codes, took place at Ben Vorster High School in Tzaneen.

“We are aware that at the pace at

which things are moving, it would take us years to make a dent in the challeng-es of sport infrastructure in our schools and communities. We want to see every school in the province having access to adequate facilities to practice school sport and physical education. Most of our school don’t have proper infrastruc-ture so we want our municipalities to

help us in this regard,” Ramadwa said.“Our dream is to have adequate

facilities for basic exercise and sporting activities in every ward in the province. This will also help in developing sport in the province and provide an opportunity for talent identification and talent build-ing,” Ramadwa said.

MEC calls for municipalities to intervene in sport development

Local government hosts finance week RC MYBURGH>>[email protected]

The South African Local Government Associa-tion (Salga) will host their annual Municipal Finance Week at Forever Resort Warmbaths (Bela-Bela) today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday).

Salga’s Communications Officer, Thipa Selala said in a press release that the associa-tion has initiated an annual forum in the form of the Municipal Finance Week for municipali-ties to focus on fiscal management and explore new options to fund provision of services on a sustainable basis.

“Municipalities continue to play a pivotal role in the social and economic development of communities through continuous provision of services and the forum serves as a knowl-edge sharing platform where matters related to financial management in municipalities are discussed and best practice profiled,” the state-ment read.

The focus areas for the two-day session will, among others, be on matters pertaining to improving municipal revenue, audit outcomes, oversight, governance, supply chain manage-ment, asset management, budgeting and capital expenditure.

>> Focus is now on the National First Division>> Every player knows our mandate of ensuring that we get maximum points HERBERT RACHUENE>>[email protected]

Black Leopards has put behind them their Nedbank Cup loss and all attention is now focussed on the National First Divi-

sion (NFD) where they are currently lying in 4th position having played 21 matches.

Leopards lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs during the last 32 match of the Nedbank Cup at Peter Mokaba stadium on Sunday, a defeat which meant elimination from the competition.

Spokesperson Berry Ramunenyiwa said: “It was one of those matches that we needed to play in order to test our strength. Our boys played very well and we were just unlucky not to win. We dominated both

halves of the match, but luck was not on our side.”

He further stated that their focus is to do well against Vasco da Gama whom they will face on Saturday at Giyani Stadium in the 22nd match of the NFD.

“The match will be played at Giyani Stadium, not at Makhuvha Stadium as com-municated previously. It is going to be a difficult game considering their position in the league. They are in the fifth position, not far from us, but we have a mandate which every player is aware of and that is to ensure that we get maximum points in every match,” Ramunenyiwa said.

The Potties Old Boys Cricket Club (POBCC) won the Limpopo Cricket Promotional League after decimating Phalaborwa Cricket Club by 276 runs in their play-off match at the Polo-kwane Cricket Club on Sunday.

The team from Mokopane won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring a mammoth total of 404 for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Marnus Pienaar (139 from 110 balls) top scored for POBCC and received good sup-port from Luan Verwey (63 from 62 balls).

Acasio de Sousa also contributed towards

the massive total with a savage 107 runs off only 58 balls. Phalaborwa failed dismally in their run chase and were bowled out for 128 runs. De Sousa completed an excellent all round performance after claiming 5/21 in 7,4 overs to help his side gain promotion to the Premier League for the 2014/15 season.

Club cricket action in Limpopo continues over the weekend with the start of the Twen-ty20 competition for the Central and Letaba teams. There are no matches scheduled at the Polokwane Cricket Club over the weekend, but matches will be played on Sunday at the University of Limpopo, the Nirvana Oval and at Capricorn High School.

Executive Committee member of the Capri-corn District Athletics, Leon Maakamedi is adamant that the team they selected dur-

ing the Capricorn District Athletics meeting for high schools last Thursday will do them proud during the Provincial Athletics Championships for high schools scheduled to take place at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The team is made up of athletes from high schools in the Zebediela, Mankweng, Mogo-dumo, Polokwane, Senwabarwana, Sekgosese and Konekwena clusters.

“We selected a team of 203 athletes that will compete in the track and field events. It is a strong team with a mixture of experienced athletes. Some of these athletes represented the province during the South African Champi-onships before, so their experience will come in very handy. They will be competing against athletes from the Sekhukhune, Vhembe, Mo-pani and Waterberg districts. It is not going to be easy but we are confident that they will do us proud at the event,” Maakamedi said.

Provincial Schools Athletics Secretary, Peter

Maluleke said all preparations are in place for Saturday’s meeting. “The event will start at 8:30 and is expected to end late afternoon. We will select a team of 160 athletes to represent the province during the National Athletics Championship for high schools scheduled from 26 to 29 March at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium. We wish all athletes the best of luck for the event,” Maluleke said.

He stated that they are excited to have been chosen by the South African Schools Athletics to host the national event this year. “Last year it was Eastern Cape and now it is our turn. We believe this a great opportunity for us to showcase some of the sport facilities we have in the province,” Maluleke said.

The best represented circuits are Polokwane with 59 athletes, Konekwena with 45 and Mogodumo with 16. Among the best repre-sented local schools are Hoërskool Pietersburg (16), Hoër Tegniese Skool Tom Naudé (8), PEPPS Polokwane (7), Curro Heuwelkruin (4), Hoërskool Noorderland (3) and Capricorn High School (2). Also well represented are SJ van der Merwe Technical High School (6) from Mogodumo circuit and Harry Oppenheimer Agricultural High School (6) from Konekwena.

Polokwane’s oval racing enthusiasts can look forward to an action packed programme on Saturday when the Polokwane Oval Club will for the first time be hosting a Motorsport South Africa Regional meeting featuring nine different classes.

First on the card will be the Ninja Midgets go-karts which specifically cater for kids six years and older. These go-karts are fitted with 60cc engines and slick tyres and spectators will be amazed by the speed these vehicles reach. They will be followed by the Micro Midgets which is a bigger version of the Ninja Midgets and fitted with a 100cc engine.

Next up will be the Stockrod class featuring Polokwane’s own National title holder, Tienie Kloppers who will have his hands full with his biggest challenge coming from Bart Johns from Vereeniging, the current SA1.

The 1600 Modifieds will be hotly contested with National Champion, Pieter Ferreira trying to make it to the chequered flag in one piece with local heroes Heath Bent, Hennie de Koker and Fred Cooper expected to provide stiff

competition. Gauteng drivers Albert Bridges, Pieter van Staden and Pieter Minnie will add even more spice to this class.

In the 2.0L Modifieds, current SA1 and local driver, Johnny du Randt can expect a big chal-lenge from his team-mates Rudi van Breda and Pieter Venter. André Swarts from Vereeniging will give the local drivers plenty to think about.

The Hotrod class will also provide some action-packed racing with multiple National Champions, Neville Loosemore from Richards Bay, Rudi Myburgh from Vereeeniging and locals Allas Pienaar and Stephan Weideman challenging another local driver Nico Vorster, who broke almost every lap in the country last year in his imported Opel Tigra.

In the Super Saloons, locals Piet Venter and Phillip de Wet will try to prevent the Gauteng drivers from laying their hands on the trophies. Saturday’s cherry on top will be the Sprint class with “Wild” Willie Zurich making the trip to Polokwane from Gauteng. These brute V8, 800 hp machines weighing only 600 kg are sure to provide for plenty of excitement.

Gates open at 12:00 on Saturday and spec-tators are welcome to bring their braais and cooler boxes. Lots of food stalls are available including a fully licensed bar.

Aikido martial artists from the city spent a busy weekend attending a practical Aikido seminar hosted by the Polokwane Aikido Club at the Guts & Glory Martial Arts Club in Mygenoegen over the weekend.

The seminar was the first of its kind to ever be hosted in Polokwane and featured Elroy Goliath, the Chief Instructor of Aikido South Africa, who made the trip from Cape Town to Polokwane to attend the three-day event. Goli-ath shared his vast knowledge of the art of Ai-kido with those that attended the seminar and lots of lessons were learnt on this lesser known form of martial arts. Those from the city that attended the seminar expressed their satisfac-

tion afterwards on the quality of the presenta-tion by Goliath, who has been practising Aikido for twenty years. Goliath received his training from Hombu Shihan Yoji Fujimoto (8th Dan), a direct student of the founder of Aikido.

Students training under Goliath receive the highest standard of Aikido training available in the world today and authentic to the original roots of this martial arts discipline. He takes personal responsibility for classes falling under the umbrella of Aikido South Africa and is as-sisted by his senior students nationally.

Although rather stiff and sore after the intense three-day seminar, Rudi Delport Head Sensei at Polokwane Aikido Club expressed his gratitude to Goliath for sharing his knowledge with the students of Aikido in the city over the weekend.

Entries have opened for the popular Kremetart One Day 4-Stage Cycling Race that will be held in Makhado on 7 June.

This year will be the 25th edition of the race and also mark the tenth year of PPC’s involve-ment first as co-sponsor and since 2011 the main sponsor. The first Kremetart race was held in 1990 with only 50 cyclists participat-ing. The popularity continues to grow annually and therefore the organisers have set a limit of 2 000 entries for this year’s race in order to provide an enjoyable and quality experience for participants and spectators.

The race is geared towards the whole fam-ily, with the programme catering for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels. Cycling gets under-

way on the Friday with a 10 km Mountain Bike Fun Ride. The 70 km road race will be held on Saturday, 7 June. For the more adventurous, there is the mountain bike cross country race the next day with scenic routes in the magnifi-cent Soutpansberg Mountain.

PPC’s Customer Executive Cement Sales & Marketing, Richard Tomes says that PPC is delighted to sponsor the event, as it offers amateur cyclists an opportunity to ride with professionals and at the same time experience the beautiful Soutpansberg region. “It is a seri-ous race, but also a time for families to spend time together and enjoy the great outdoors,” he said. The Kremetart Cycle Race is rated among one of the top three races among cyclists in the country. Enter online at www.kremetartcy-cling.co.za. Hurry as entries close at midnight on 31 May.

The Provincial Secretary of the

South African Police Union (Sapu),

Mr Solly Bulala is suspecting a

plot aimed at allegedly eliminating him

raised during a recent meeting held

by provincial Police officers who are

disgruntled over media reports on the

conduct of the Limpopo Police published

by Polokwane Observer.

Bulala spoke exclusively to Polo-

kwane Observer following tip-offs re-

ceived from members of Sapu, after the

management meeting held by top brass

officials of the provincial Police that he

is now, because of his unfavourable

media statements persona non grata

and currently “the most preferred

target”.Bulala explains that although

the most recent article on the

wrongdoings of a Police unit

commander sparked

the uproar it

stems from far

back and includes unsavoury state-

ments released by Sapu regarding

the current Police Commissioner

and his predecessor who was

Polokwane’s CrossFit Firebox member Janine Prinsloo was the pride of the city recently when she achieved a

credible second place at the Fittest in Cape Town competition that featured CrossFit members from clubs through-out South Africa.

Prinsloo, who has been attending the CrossFit programme for a year-

and-a-half was surprised when she managed to complete her workout routine in the second fastest time and received a cheque for R2 000 for her effort. She set herself a goal of being in the top five after watching the competition from the sidelines last year.

She qualified for the Fittest in Cape Town competition that was held at the University of Stel-lenbosch in February after going through the regional rounds and was eventually

beaten by first placed Lara Erlank from Namibia, who has been a CrossFit athlete since 2010. Prinsloo plans to enter for the competition again next year and is hoping to go one better in 2015 and win the title of Fittest in Cape Town. CrossFit is one of the fast-est growing exercise routines in Africa with each session constantly varied and featuring functional movement (how humans move in real life) and high intensity exercises to increase the heart rate. Crossfit develops neurologi-cal skills and physical fitness combin-ing speed and power, the essence of a good fitness programme.

CrossFit Firebox is situated at the Bon Marques Indoor Sports Centre and opened in its doors in January 2014. Fitness sessions are held from Monday to Friday in the mornings and evenings. New members interested in taking up Crossfit can contact them on 072 354 4877.

>> Difficult to sit on the bench and not play>> Realise his potential as a soccer playerHERBERT RACHUENE>>[email protected]

After winning the Nedbank Cup Man of the Match award for his sterling performance against the defending champions of the

Nedbank Cup Kaizer Chiefs at Peter Mokaba stadium on Sunday, Black Leopards midfielder Edgar Manaka has vowed to continue with the same performance and help his team to return to Premier Soccer League.

Manaka started his soccer career at Super-Sport United’s development structure where he was played as a second striker in 2007. He joined Black Leopards in 2011 with the aim of broadening his wings and realising his poten-tial as a soccer player.

Way back then he competed for the starting line-up with the likes of Tiyani Mabunda and Raymond Manama but now his scintillating form in the National First Division is indicative of a new lease on life.

“Football is a beautiful and complex game. I have learned a lot in the game and I have matured in the game. Obviously it was difficult to sit on the bench and not play at that time. As a professional, one has to be patient and not sulk but learn from those who are given the opportunity to play. I have always believed my time will come and there is no better time than this,” Manaka said.

He has has also been instrumental in Black Leopards’ quest of returning to the Premier Soccer League after the team was relegated last season.

Since the beginning of the season he has played 90% of matches thereby helping the team to annex eight victories and seven draws after 21 matches. “We are doing well under the new coach,” he said referring to Kosta Papic, and added: “We are confident that we can return to the Premier Soccer League. We have got nine games left which are equivalent to 27 points so anything is possible in football,” Manaka said.

He further states his dream is to ply his trade overseas and maybe get a national call up. “It is every soccer players dream to play for his country and test himself against the best in the world and I am no different,” states Manaka.

He also described the Kaizer Chiefs game as one of his best games ever.

“Playing a team like Kaizer Chiefs you don’t need a motivation. The fixture alone is a motivation; we played against the cream of top South African players with lots of international caps and indispensible experience. It was a good game and we contained them for the 90 minutes of the match. We were just let down by a mistake which we committed in the in last stages of extra time. However, it was another learning experience and we will get better go-ing forward,” Manaka said.
