Happy New Year and a welcome to 2021. May the blessings of a new year wrap around us and bring good health.

I pray that the vaccination will heal us and our Park will be able to return to all the activities we enjoy. We hope that all of the Canadians and British return to their homes here. They are an important part of our community. We have missed all of you.

I want to thank the Board and all of the volunteers that have stood up to the challenge of 2020.

I’ve enjoyed being your President even through these troubling times. Please treat your new incoming Board with respect. They are volunteers. They don’t get the “big bucks.”

IMPORTANT EDITOR’S MESSAGE

In mid December, the clubhouses were still closed and only outdoor activities were allowed to continue. This January issue was written assuming most activities have resumed. As you read this though, that may not be true. Please refer to Nextdoor and Facebook for the most up to date information regarding the resumption of all activities.

Residents’ Photos For New Neighbors (and Old)Linda Bailey, 863-420-0825

The Photo Albums in Challenger Clubhouse contain photos of residents arranged alphabetically and by street. These albums need constant updating. We have many new residents who have not had pictures taken and some residents who have never had their picture added to the albums.I would like to undertake a project to correct that! I am willing to visit each home, by appointment, to take pictures of every new resident and anyone who does not have a photo in the albums. Just give me a call and we can set up a photo session. Thanks, Linda.

Registration: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.Patio, Challenger ClubhouseBring your Driver’s License or another form of identificationDue to Covid-19 restrictions, the Annual Meeting will be held on January 11, 2021 in the Challenger Clubhouse Parking Lot at 5:00 p.m.It would help a great deal if you came for Early Registration from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the Patio. Wear a mask and observe social distancing. Be sure to bring an I.D. to register. If you cannot do early registration, you will be able to register up until the start of the meeting.Once we have a quorum of 150 people, (one per household), we can begin the meeting. Yes/No cards will be distributed to one homeowner from an address. At the meeting, we will vote on the budget. Once the voting is over, the new Board will be seated and will attend to Board business. If we don’t have 150 people, the meeting will be closed. The new board will not be seated in the January meeting if we do not vote on the budget. We will reopen the meeting on Monday, February 8, and proxies will be allowed for voting on the budget. The three homeowners who have volunteered to Board of Director seats are Vinny McCrave, Jim Glynn, and Tom Becker. Their resumes have been inserted in this issue of Polo Park Press. We will all be wishing for nice weather but it might be wise to bring an umbrella.

Polo Park Community Channel 998There are still neighbors who do not use computers and like to get news and postings from our Comcast Community Channel 998. It has church times, events, activities etc all listed with contacts. We are happy to provide this service. We would really appreciate it if event managers would write their information ( sheets are available by our door ) and leave it in the box on the wall at our 998 office located in the “middle” room at the BCH. This would be absolute best for us but if an alternative is needed one could email an attachment with the information to the three of us. 998 messages are updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and one of us would take care of it. If you have a digital TV and Comcast service, you can access channel 998 with your remote. All additions and corrections are also emailed each week to Adrian Cleave, PPP online webmaster. This is published under the 998 tab...

Golf Cart Numbers Not Just for GolfersDaryl Ratliff , 414-524-9011

If you drive a Golf Cart on County Roads in Polo Park, you must have it registered. This rule has nothing to do with whether or not you play golf. Every cart must be registered. This is a way to identify your own golf cart as well as a safety issue. There’s nothing more embarrassing than driving home in the wrong golf cart! And if someone else drives off in your golf cart, how can you prove it? If your golf cart is picked up by a thief, how do you identify it to the Sheriff’s Office? For your own peace of mind, please go to the Pro Shop this week and get your cart registered. The Pro Shop is open every day, even Sunday. It will not cost you anything to register your cart, but you then need to go to the Dollar Store and buy some stick-on numbers for $1.00. For fun, you can add your name also!

Old Computer or Laptop?Jim Rose, 863-256-5172

I’m posting this to let everyone here in the park know that I want to do my part in helping with the Polo Park Activities Fund. How am I going to do this you ask? Actually, many of you could help too. You could drop off, at my house, laptops or computers you don’t use or need any more with keyboard, mouse, and screen. When you get a new computer, just drop off the old one here. If I can fix them up and get them to work well, I will try and sell them. If I can sell them I will make a donation to the Polo Park Activities Fund. If they are not sellable, I will wipe the hard drive clean with special software and sell them for parts only. Or, if it’s too old, I’ll just dispose of them after wiping out the hard drive. To make this clearer, I will wipe all hard drives with the software used by companies to wipe business computers used in retail where people’s credit cards have been entered on them so there will be no need for you to worry about anyone accessing the information that was on the hard drive. If you need files and or pictures that are on the old computer, make sure you back them up to a USB drive or I can do it for a small fee for the cost of the USB drive. For this to work I will need you to bring those computers or laptops to me at my house, or send me a message and I will pick them up if you’re unable to deliver. It is also important that I get all the parts and cables including Hard Drive, Keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor (whenever possible) and if a laptop, the power adapter. If I have to buy any of these things to put with the computer to sell it, it leaves less money for the donation or makes it not worth trying to sell, so it is important that I get all those items when possible. The older ones aren’t worth much or anything at all because the technology is too outdated so I will wipe hard drive and scrap the rest. I won’t get much for old stuff, if anything at all, but I’m willing to try and help with the Activities Fund.I am ready to accept your computers/laptops anytime. Please message me on Facebook or Next Door, or call me and leave a message at my home. My hope is to help Polo Park Activities with donations from items that might otherwise be tucked back into a closet or thrown out on trash day.

We have a Bible Study for women every Thursday afternoon.Every third Thursday, we meet at 11:00 and carpool to Bob Evans for breakfast or lunch!

The Polo Solo Group consists of widows/singles who are interested in getting out of the house. We meet the first Tuesday of the month at 1:00 PM in the Challenger Club House to decide what we will do each Tuesday of that month. It could be a lunch or movie, or once a month a play on a Sunday. Sometimes, it’s a holiday meal at the clubhouse. We have recently lost some members, due to health problems and other reasons, so our group has gotten smaller. We invite new members and possibly new ideas of fun things to do. Please call Dolores Childress at 427-7681 or Alice McCauley at 280-8992 for more information.

The Thursday Evening Bible Study will begin again in January. The sessions will be held at the Challenger Clubhouse at 7:00 p.m.The leader will be Dr. Charles Brown, who is the pastor of the Polo Park Chapel. Dr. Brown has taught for many years in churches and as a college professor. His approach is friendly, “down to earth”, and he has a great sense of humor. All are welcome to attend!

Mah Jongg is a game that is commonly played by four players (but can be played by 2 or 3). It is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Studies show that Mah Jongg helps cure dementia, boosts cognitive awareness, and improves socialization skills. At the Polo Park Mah Jongg games, you can usually count on a few laughs too. Mah Jongg is played every Saturday at the Challenger Clubhouse (unless otherwise noted) at 9:00 a.m. and every Tuesday (with the exception of the first Tuesday of each month) at 9:00 at the Boulevard Clubhouse. Please check the calendar. If you are interested in playing, please come and observe to see if it’s for you. If you are interested please email Ginnie Thompson at [email protected] with your email address and Ginnie will be glad to send you written instructions to familiarize you with the game. It takes a good three times at a minimum to enjoy the game, but it does keep your mind going.

Please call the contact person listed for each group to find out the latest information regarding permission to meet.

Every Wednesday at Noon, volunteers meet at the Pro Shop to do light work on the golf course for a couple of hours. Some of the things we do are laying sod, trimming tree branches, putting stakes in the ground with rope to keep carts on the cart path. If you enjoy doing this type of work, please join us!

The Chapel continues to support the Well of Hope Food Bank with financial donations – NOT FOOD. The need has become great for families and with the addition of seniors also needing help. Anyone interested in helping us support this with financial donations, see Mira Haack or contribute in the box at the Chapel. Thank you.

The Care Bears program sends cards to residents during an illness or after a death. If you know of an illness or want to report a death, please contact Gloria. Thank you.

Helping Hands needs more volunteers since we have lost a few.If you are in need of transportation to an appointment, please let me know as soon as possible. If we don’t know of an appointment until the day before, it’s sometimes difficult to find a driver.

Looking for a Volunteer Job for Polo Park? How About Advertisements for Polo Park Press?

Polo Park Press is produced entirely by volunteers, except for an outside printing company. The current Editor is Denise Lundin, Jan Thraen handles the distribution, Linda Bailey provides the photos, and I am in charge of the advertisements. I was the previous editor, having started in 2010 right as the time our entire rubbish pickup changed. The very first article I wrote was several pages long as we explained the new system. Ha, I started my career with garbage!I took over the advertisements from Vinny McCrave when Denise agreed to be the editor. The advertisements pay just about the total cost of producing the newsletter. We receive approximately $7,000 in ad revenue each year. Time for a change! I am ready to give up this volunteer position. It’s definitely the easiest of my volunteer jobs….easier than a dinner/dance or serving hot dogs every week. But it takes a little more brain work and my brain is tired.Would you be willing to take over this position? It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you are raising enough money each year to provide the newsletter to the community. I’m ready to share that good feeling! The Job: Send out a reminder each fall to the current advertisers and let the money flow into the office. Receive phone calls from businesses which are anxious to advertise with us. Keep track of each company, see that their ads get to the printer, be sure their payments are received. Try to gather some new advertisers. Send a thank-you at the end of the year. That’s it! I have complete files to turn over. 99% of this job can be done by telephone.Give me a call if you’re interested! We need your help!
