At age 30, Nic Roldan has become an icon in the dangerous and exciting world of international, high-goal polo where injury can be just as prevalent as a champagne toast. Fueled by intensity, passion and raw talent, Nic holds many of the highest accolades prized by the adrenaline-charged sport and is one of the best players in the United States today.

Born in Buenos Aires and raised in the United States and Brunei, Nic remembers swinging a polo mallet by age four. His father, Raul Roldan, who played for the Sultan of Brunei’s team for many years, provided early inspiration for the prodigy. Nic captured his first major win—the coveted U.S. Open Polo ChampionshipTM — in 1998 with team Escue shortly after reaching professional status at age 14. Nic ended his inaugural season with the title, Young Player of the Year. The win and title earned him ranking with the

best polo players and catapulted him onto the polo world’s list of most celebrated athletes.

Nic has charged polo fields on five continents and has won the Camara de Diputados of Argentina, The Bronze and Gold Cup in Sotto Grande, Spain and the Melbourne Cup in Australia. His roster of wins quickly grew to include the C.V. Whitney Cup, Pacific Coast Open, Texas Open, Mercedes Benz Polo Challenge, Monty Waterbury and the Gold Cup of the Americas,

all of which he has won twice. Nic spends two or three months a year in Argentina, perfecting every aspect of his game under the watchful eyes of polo veterans. His career ambition is to reach 10-goal status and win the Argentine Open, claim a second U.S. Open Polo ChampionshipTM victory and propel popularity for the sport.

Polo’s hottest rising star has attracted a variety of opportunities including host of the annual Charity Polo Classic in the Hamptons as well as numerous guest appearances on several television shows. In 2012, Nic was the recipient of the prestigious Harriman Cup, honoring individuals who have made huge contributions to the world of polo. His rugged good looks and exceptional physique have also garnered attention, landing him recognition in the Sunday Styles section of The New York Times and as one of Vanity Fair’s 10 Hottest Horsemen. From photo shoots with GQ Taiwan to the covers of Hamptons magazine and Palm Beach Illustrated, Nic is quickly reaffirming his position as the sports world’s latest stunner.

This summer Nic will be competing on the international stage at the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open Championship and at the fabled Westchester Cup at The Guards Polo Club. NPPh

The official kickoff of “Polo at the Park” on June 2nd, 2013

coincided with another – the event formerly known as “Polo at the Park” is now officially called “Bethpage Polo at the Park.” Each season, Bethpage Polo attracts thousands of revelers to Bethpage State Park’s polo field as local celebrities, polo enthusiasts, socialites and small businesses converge every Sunday through October.

The field has hosted internationally renowned polo superstar Nacho Figueras and his Black Watch Team as well as other professional polo stars. Robert Ceparano, owner of Bethpage Polo at the Park and Country Farms, said, “Polo is a very different sport than it was a decade ago. It’s not just for the Hamptons or private social circles anymore. We want everyone to enjoy the sport, and Bethpage Polo makes that possible. Kids are free to attend and the low fees and parking costs make this an affordable opportunity to include everyone all summer long.”

The new look of Bethpage Polo can be viewed on advertisements throughout Long Island at Long Island Rail Road stations and inside the train cars. Bethpage Polo also partnered with the Metropolitan Transit Authority-Long Island Rail Road to create discount weekend travel packages for those attending the event via public transportation.

“Bethpage Polo has always been known as a family-friendly event, but we really wanted to introduce the sport to a younger, more diverse audience. We worked with independent consultants during the spring to try and capture the passion of the sport,” said Ceparano. “I wanted to communicate to people who have never been to a polo event, what an amazing experience it is. Bethpage Polo at the Park is successfully executing that vision. This season has generated more interest than ever before, with inquiries regarding VIP arrangements and tent rentals at an all-time high. We expect to sell out most, if not all, of our VIP tickets and tents well in advance of next season.”

This season Bethpage Polo has attracted some of the top businesses, including Ferrari-Maserati of Long Island, which sponsored a tent for the season and will provide vehicles to test-drive; and Art Brunch, which is also based out of Long Island. Art Brunch combines art with brunches within various locations throughout the Northeast. The Art Brunch tent will host a variety of rare and valuable works of art each week,

including some by NYC-based artist Mitchell Schorr.

“The sponsorship of PULSE Magazine, and the purchase of tents by some of Long Island’s most buzzworthy businesses on the Bethpage Polo field will only encourage other businesses to inquire about the event,” said Vanessa Ferrelli, owner of Vanessa Ferrelli Management, and one of the consultants that Ceparano approached early this year. As interest in Bethpage Polo at the Park grows and the media continue to reach out, this is sure to become the ‘can’t-miss’ event of the season.” NP

Located 65 miles northwest of New York City on nearly 500 acres, Blue Sky Polo offers its club members four full-size tournament fields and a practice

field. There are also stabling facilities for 60 horses and pasture turn-out for 100 more. Chuck Elmes, owner of Blue Sky Polo, has always loved polo and every year he improves the facilities while keeping member costs down. It is a fun, friendly polo club for every member of the family with frequent après-polo Asados for everyone to enjoy. Blue Sky not only offers great family polo – there are also three ponds next to the polo fields (used for irrigation) that are stocked with trout for fly fishing.

On Sunday, September 8th, Blue Sky will host the 11th annual polo match to benefit The Elant Foundation, a senior citizens organization which is headquartered in Orange County and also has facilities in several lower Hudson Counties. And, on the previous day, September 7th, Blue Sky will host the Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, also to benefit The Elant Foundation. NP

POLO CLASSIC

sixth annual

On Saturday, June 1, Veuve Clicquot champagne celebrated the sixth annual

Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at Liberty State Park. Matthew McConaughey kicked-off the

day as co-host alongside Nacho Figueras, Delfina Blaquier and President of Veuve

Clicquot U.S., Vanessa Kay.

Page 21: Polo Northeast 2013

PoloNortheast 2013 | 19

This year, the event sponsored Liberty State Park which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy last October. Veuve Clicquot also helped with the recovery of the park by replanting and landscaping a

large part of it. The event also benefited the McConaugheys’ “just keep livin” Foundation, which is dedicated to empowering adolescents to lead active, healthy lives. More than 7,000 attended the afternoon social event which featured high fashion, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label and Rose champagne and, of course, the fast-paced polo match.

Beginning the festivities, Broadway star Norm Lewis sang the National Anthem and Dree Hemingway threw out the ceremonial toss-in. The champagne was flowing as guests including Camila Alves McConaughey (McConaughey’s wife), Ashley Olsen, Rosario Dawson, Tiffani Thiessen, Garcelle Beauvais, Alek Wek, Anne V., Dree Hemingway, Carley Cushnie, Michelle Ochs, and many more enjoyed the glamorous afternoon under the yellow-orange Veuve Clicquot umbrellas.

As Nacho was injured in a polo match two weeks prior, his son Hilario played on team Black Watch and defeated team Nespresso 8-6 in an exciting game. During half-time, Matthew McConaughey and his wife went out onto the field for the stomping of the divots, a classic polo tradition. Throughout the match, celebrities and VIPs sipped Veuve Clicquot champagne, feasted on a polo-perfect lunch, and watched on the sidelines as a large New York crowd took in the sweeping views of the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Bridgehampton Polo Club is back for a 17th season. The sporting event that epitomizes a quintessential summer afternoon in the Hamptons will

return to Two Trees Farm for six consecutive Saturdays from July 20th through August 24th, offering Hamptons tastemakers an unparalleled polo experience.

This season, the VIP tent remains by-invite only. With the sport as the primary focus and ultimate backdrop, field-side garden areas will give patrons an unparalleled view of the match. They will enjoy a pre-game reception with summery cocktails, light hors d’oeuvres and entertainment, while mixing and mingling amongst some of the most prestigious luxury brands in the world.

On the field, the Monty Waterbury and Hamptons Cups are up for grabs as some of the top players from around the globe compete. Already, several teams have confirmed their participation, including home team, White Birch Farm.

Veteran polo publicist and event organizer Shamin Abas and her team, who also handle Greenwich Polo Club and the High Goal All-Star Polo Challenge in Palm Beach, are once again at the helm of the operation. Changes by the PR and special events company in recent years have created quite a favored buzz in the media, and amongst the close-knit, hard-to-tap Hamptonites who enjoy a low-key environment. In fact, the news even caught the attention of The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, which awarded the club the coveted Five Star Diamond Award at the completion of the 2011 season.

A limited number of field side tailgate tents will be available for purchase, and serve as the perfect place to entertain. To set the mood, a gourmet picnic and champagne for ten is included in the purchase price.

The public is also invited to enjoy the match from the sidelines. Tickets are available at the gate for the price of $20 a car. For more information, go to www.BridgehamptonPoloLLC.com. NP

The Greenwich Polo Club was selected by the third in line for the British crown, Prince Harry, to host the 3rd Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup benefiting the impoverished children in Lesotho, Africa. The Prince,

along with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, established the charity in honor of his late mother, Princess Diana. The charity establishes camps to support humanistic efforts to fight AIDS/HIV which is rampant among the children of Lesotho who suffer the third highest rate of AIDS in the world.

It was an honor for Greenwich Polo Club, the mecca for polo in Northeast United States, to be chosen for this event. Businessman and polo patron Peter Brandt established the club in 1981 which is nestled in the beautiful backcountry of Greenwich, CT, 30 miles from New York City. The first Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup was held at the Apes Hill Club in Barbados and the 2nd was held at Coworth Park in the UK.

Prince Harry arrived for an 11:30 luncheon and then attended a reception prior to the 3pm event. The 28 year-old addressed the guests, who paid a minimum $5,000 to attend, and spoke of the success of the charity in establishing Mamahato Clubs throughout the country of Lesotho. Sentebale (meaning “Forget-me-not” in Sesotho), fights the AIDS/HIV pandemic that has stricken hundreds of thousands of children under 14 years of age.

Argentine Nacho Figueras was in attendance not only as a celebrity polo player in the match, but also as an official ambassador for Sentebale. This was not the first time Figueras and the Prince have shared the polo grounds. They took to the playing fields on Governors Island in New York City at the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic which also raised money for Sentebale.

British player Malcom Borwick, representing Royal Salute Scotch, was also in attendance and captained the Sentebale team for the day’s match. Prince Harry, wearing #1 on his jersey, played for the Sentebale team. Figueras led the St. Regis team in opposition.

Members of the Royal Family have a history of playing polo in recent decades. Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles, played for 40 years until retiring from the game in 2005. Like his younger brother, Prince William is also actively playing the sport, mainly to raise money for selected charities. They both play the game enthusiastically and ride hard.

The day began cold and rainy in the beautiful secluded rolling hills of far southeast Connecticut. Local, national and international press were present and, for most, polo was a foreign subject for them. But they were entertained by the anticipation of the arrival of the likes of supermodels Karolina Kurkova, Erin Heatherton and Stephanie Seymour as well as other celebrities.

The match began at 3pm as sunshine appeared after a dreary morning and mid-day. The event was limited to 4 chukkers with the Sentebale team charging out to a 3-1 lead. But after St. Regis tied the game at 3-3, it appeared the match was destined to end at a draw. As destiny would have it, the winning goal was scored by Prince Harry.

At the trophy presentation ceremony following the match, Dawn Jones, wife of actor Tommy Lee Jones, playing for Team St. Regis, was awarded the Most Valuable Player award. Team Sentebale was awarded the winner’s cup by supermodel Karolina Kurkova along with a kiss for the Prince.

But the point of the entire affair was to raise money and awareness for the charity. In the end, $1 million was raised toward the effort, a record for the young charity. For further information and to donate to Sentebale, go to Sentebale.org. NP

Haviland Hollow Farm/NYCPOLO.com (HHPC) is

headed into its fifth polo season with some major growth. On the heels of rave reviews from the polo and equestrian community over the past few years, HHPC continually develops a strong following of professionals, students and fans from around the world. The farm, conveniently located one hour from mid-town Manhattan and thirty minutes from Greenwich, CT, has become known for the incredible quality of its facilities, its fun-loving people and family friendly environment.

The Polo Club boasts a year- round polo program with two top-notch polo fields and an indoor polo arena. The summer polo season is from May until October and has levels ranging from 4 to 14 goal polo for its members. The winter season is from November until March and play is from beginner to intermediate levels. The facilities include a 200 x

90 indoor arena, 225 x 125 outdoor arena, riding trails and a nice turnout on 250 acres. In addition, the farm has two 1/2 mile sand exercise tracks that both the polo and equestrian clients like to use to exercise, ride or to cool down their horses.

The club offers a year round lessons program for beginner and intermediate players to learn and improve the game of polo. In addition, a high school polo program was introduced last year, with this past winter growing to two arena teams training at HHPC and competing in the Regional USPA Inter scholastic tournament at Cornell.

“Many of our students have gone on to play matches outside of the club and received MVP and complements on the quality of their play. We break down the game into horsemanship, hitting, playing and rules skills. Once our students learn the basics, we encourage them to improve”,

says owner and two goal rated player, Sam Ramirez Jr. The club has successfully introduced people of all ages to this challenging and exciting sport in a unique way, having already produced many players that started with little or no prior experience.

The social aspects of HHPC offer horse enthusiasts an opportunity to come watch scheduled games and tournaments, as well as attend charity matches in September. The fields are well designed for an afternoon of relaxing on the hill while picnicking & viewing a match.

We were thrilled to see our friends from Maserati, who began exploring their interest in aligning their brand with polo at HHPC, take on the title sponsorship this year at IPC!

Those interested in learning and taking lessons for both polo and equestrian are encouraged to email [email protected]. NP

Harry Payne Whitney, by all accounts, was the father of modern polo. As Frank

Milburn once said, “Modern polo is an American game, a power game and Harry Payne Whitney invented it.” Strategy and intellect were the name of his game. Tactics such as hard hitting, hitting from the irons and long passes were his trademarks which he combined with brilliant teamwork to dominate the sport of polo in the early 1900s. “Mr. Whitney realized that if polo had become a game of skill, it could be greatly improved by intelligent leading.”

Mr. Whitney was the driving force behind polo at the Meadowbrook Club in Long Island, New York. Eugene Reynal, Monty Waterbury, Devereux Milburn and Mr. Whitney comprised the Meadowbrook team. It was this team that played most of the important American tournaments just prior to 1909.

Notwithstanding his victories on U.S. soil, Harry Payne Whitney was cognizant of the fact that the British had superior ponies to the Americans. Not content with this fact, he went about purchasing British mares and breeding them with Western stallions. Shortly thereafter, he introduced the thoroughbred strain to the mix. His ingenuity over time produced larger, tougher, and faster polo ponies which dramatically increased the speed of the game.

With vastly improved mounts, his next obvious step was to compete internationally. He assembled the U.S. International team which was comprised of Larry Waterbury,

Monty Waterbury, himself and Devereux Milburn. Each player was rated at 10 goals. Mr. Whitney was the team captain and “the best polo captain of his day” as described by the Polo Museum of Palm Beach, Florida. This brilliant team would later be referred to as “The Big Four” and would go on to defeat the Brits in the Westchester Cup matches of 1909, 1911* and 1913.**

In the polo chronicles it was mentioned that “there never was quite such a team as that unconquered team of Mr. Whitney’s and perhaps there never will be such a one again…The brilliancy, the teamwork and the accuracy of the Waterburys will always be acclaimed; the terrific drive and aggressiveness of Mr. Milburn can never be overrated. But above all was the dominating and compelling personality that made it all possible, the personal magnetism that brought out the best in everyone, the stout heart and the steady brain that prepared all things, the resourceful, strategic, unwavering captain who led his team to outstanding triumph, [Mr. Whitney].”

Not long after the 1913 International match, Harry Payne Whitney retired from tournament play. “[He] remained as one of the wisest councilors to whom the country could turn for advice on all polo matters.” He remained a 10 goal player for nearly five years after his retirement from tournament play.

Mr. Whitney died in New York City on October 26, 1930. In a tribute to the memory of Harry Payne Whitney at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the USPA on January 22, 1931, it was unanimously adopted that “…It was the keynote of his policy, and his natural instinct, to put international polo on the highest plane of friendship and good sportsmanship. It is largely because of his example that it has remained so ever since. He was as much respected and beloved by the players of England as of [his] country, and as deeply and sincerely mourned…”

It should also be noted that the English players described Mr. Whitney as the “most level headed man they had ever played against” and the “quickest polo thinker.”

Harry Payne Whitney was inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame of Palm Beach, Florida on October 6, 1990. NP

*At these games, the off-side rule was suspended and never to return.**L.E. Stoddard replaced injured Monty Waterbury in the last half of the second game.

san diego Polo Club

Twenty-five miles north of its birthplace, the San Diego Polo Club enjoys competitive matches and large crowds in sunny Southern California. Since 1987 it has welcomed an international field of players and patrons from around the globe.

Polo came to the San Diego area in the early 20th century due to the efforts of San Franciscan magnet John D. Spreckels. Spreckels developed the Coronado Country Club on fabled Coronado Island in San Diego which included 3 polo fields among other amenities. He sponsored a major tournament called Polo Challenge which is now known as The Spreckels Cup.

The Coronado Club disappeared after WWII. While the sport lingered in the area over the next 40 years, it roared back in the 70’s as the Rancho Santa Fe Club, located in Rancho Santa Fe, 15 miles north of La Jolla. It now enjoys enthusiastic crowds at the matches which include top-notch teams vying for The Spreckels Cup.

In 1995, the club formally changed its name to the San Diego Polo Club. The most common adjective heard from patrons describing the club is “classy”. As part of their tailgate pass, the fans are provided a glass of champagne during the divot stomp at halftime. The 2013 season began on June 9th and ends on Sept. 29th with the finals of the USPA Spreckels Cup. For more information go to www.sandiegopolo.com.

“As part of their tailgate pass, the fans are provided a glass of champagne during the divot stomp at halftime.”

ArizonA Polo Club

The Arizona Polo Club (APC) has been playing the sport on the beautiful WestWorld polo field in Scottsdale, Arizona since 1982. The club also offers opportunities to play in an indoor polo arena generously provided by some of its players for lessons, clinics, and tournaments to accommodate any player’s needs.

The outdoor and indoor season is played from November through April. The 2012–2013 season

began with a special match between the club’s Columbian-born players versus its USA-born players with the Columbians victorious. APC ended its season

in April with the Scottsdale Spring Cup.“This is one of the most exciting times in Arizona polo,” said Diego

Florez, the Arizona Polo Club manager. “The sport is getting more and more popular and we are thrilled to be part of its growing success. It’s a perfect weekend routine: pack up some food and drinks and head out to watch some polo and enjoy yourself and the weather.”

The Arizona Polo Club commits itself to support and sponsor amateur polo for the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan area from beginners to more seasoned players.

APC is a member of the United States Polo Association and is one of eight clubs of The Border Circuit (Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas). For more information go to arizonapolo.com.

santa barbara Polo & rACquet Club

The Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, located an hour and a half northeast of Los

Angeles in the town of Carpinteria, was founded in 1911 making it the third oldest existing member of the USPA. Nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountain foothills and the Pacific Ocean, the club is world renowned for its four lush polo fields and international outdoor competition.

The late ’20s and the mid ’30s saw the Santa Barbara Polo Club into its golden era with Sundays at the club becoming a great social event. Spectators gathered to view the sport dressed in the finest and latest of fashions and picnicked at the fields.

In February of 1942, there was an unexpected suspension of polo. Because of the war effort, and, through 1946, the club’s polo fields were used to station and train soldiers. As a result the fields became bare and needed extensive renovation.

The 1950s brought renewed polo interest as several avid polo families moved to the area. In 1966 Santa Barbara hosted the first trials for the U.S. team to play in the famous Argentina vs. America match in Buenos Aires. In 1974 the facility was renovated and updated to encourage a new renaissance in polo.

Today, the club has 3 seasons of Sunday polo beginning in early May and ending in mid-October. Management has developed all levels of polo to attract new players to the club, has ensured continued polo enthusiasm and has encouraged future players through its promotion of intercollegiate polo and public polo lessons. el Caso ranCh Polo Club

Founded in 1992, the polo club plays in the summer during the weekends starting mid-June for about 10–12 weekends. Located in Quemado Lake, New Mexico, the club is part of a working ranch that has been part of New Mexico’s history for over half a century. It is situated about 5 1/2 hours east of Phoenix and 2 1/2 hours south of Albuquerque in western New Mexico.

Known as El Caso Ranch Polo Club, it is on a large and vibrant ranch owned by Chuck Rogers, a grandson of Will Rogers. According to southern New Mexico resident and polo enthusiast, Yvonne Golston (player, instructor, horse trainer, umpire), “It is a beautiful setting, set back off the road, and every summer weekend they have polo tournaments,” Golston says. “It is on an actual working cattle ranch, and the place has elk and wild turkeys on it. There is a restaurant, a bunkhouse, and even a bar.”

Southampton Hunt & Polo Club was founded in 1989. It is now one of the largest polo clubs in America.

The club’s goal is to provide fast, competitive, fun polo in a pleasant social environment. SHPC offers low to medium goal polo from May through mid-October at its facilities in Southampton. From June through September the club runs monthly 2, 4 and 8 Goal leagues; and 10 and 12 Goal tournaments are scheduled later in the season.

For beginners, SHPC offers a structured introductory program that starts with the basics of the sport and gradually advances through more advanced levels to full field play. Instruction is provided by the club’s staff of international professionals. This program has been extremely successful in attracting new players to the game.

SHPC is located 110 miles east of New York City in the Town of Southampton, the heart of The Hamptons, America’s premier resort area. The club is 4 miles from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and is surrounded by picturesque villages where the best of entertainment, sports, shopping and fine dining can be found.

Facilities at SHPC consist of 3 full fields, 2 stick & ball areas, an outdoor arena and exercise track. The club boards 200 horses.

The club is open 6 days a week, Tuesday through Sunday, with organized play on Wednesday and Friday evenings and on Saturday and Sunday.

SHPC also operates a full service horse farm for the breeding and training of polo ponies. Grooms and lease ponies are available through an independent operator at the club. NP

Polo Series XXII, Presented by Your Rhode Island BMW Centers, kicked off its 2013 season on Saturday, June 1st at 5pm featuring USA against Argentina, one of its most formidable rivals, at the polo grounds of Glen Farm, 715 East Main Road / Rte.138 in Portsmouth, RI.

“With an arch rival and world-renown polo powerhouse like Argentina to launch the 22nd season, and a battery of top contenders following after this challenge, the roster will be action-packed” explains USA team captain Dan Keating. “We look forward to playing a tough opponent, and expect a heated contest.” Argentina has risen to dominance as a world-powerhouse in the sport of polo in the past few decades.

The Polo Series is one of New England’s most popular attractions, and a tradition whose heritage dates back to the Gilded Age. To the delight

of enthusiastic audiences from NY to ME, the polo matches provide entertainment for audiences of all ages, held every Saturday in June through September at 5pm (4pm in September). For more information please call 401.846.0200.

Special après polo events this year, which are annual traditions enjoyed by all, include an authentic Argentine Asado Lamb Roast after the match on Sat., July 6th; a field-side Lobsterbake after the match on Saturday, August 3rd; and a Jamaican Jerk Grill after the match on Saturday, August 17. The social highlight of the Newport season will be the 13th annual International Polo Charity Ball, dubbed the Bacchanale Ball with guests of honor, the Italian Polo Team on Friday, August 2 at Rosecliff. These events require advanced reservations, and all sell out.

With another national debut this season, the Polo Series will have

hosted 28 nations over its 22 seasons including England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, India, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Barbados, Canada, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Kenya, Brazil, China, Italy and Mexico.

Dating back more than 130 years in Newport, the polo matches are a unique and popular summertime tradition, open to the public. Audiences of several thousand spectators enjoy cheering for the international guests, as well as teams representing major US cities, including Boston, Dallas, Palm Beach, Philadelphia and Baltimore playing against the home team.

“Our sponsors have been with us since the beginning. Without their support, the Series would not be as extensive as it is,” explains Dan Keating, Polo Series founder.

The Polo Series takes place in the bucolic setting of Glen Farm, the last 100 acres of what was once a 700-acre manorial farm whose settlement dates back to the 1600’s. Its classical stone barns from the Gilded Age and its park-like grounds were rehabilitated by Keating and thrive today as an equestrian & community recreational property, and home of the Polo Series. aPPealing: Claims by players for a foul generally expressed by the raising of mallets above the head or by a helicoptering motion. Over demonstrative appealing is considered very bad form.

ball: Made of plastic or wood, weighs 4½ ounces and is 3½ inches in diameter.

buMP: A player is permitted to ride off another to spoil his shot or to remove him from the play. The angle of contact must be no more than 45 degrees. The faster the pony travels, the smaller the angle must be. A good bump can shake discs and dentures loose.

Chukker: A chukker (sometimes called chukka) is one period of play in a match, lasting 7-7½ minutes. Players return to the field each chukker with a fresh pony. The term derives from the Hindustani chakar and the Sanskrit cakra meaning circle or wheel.

Field: A full size polo field is 300 yards by 160 yards, or the area of three soccer fields or nine football fields. The goal posts, which collapse on impact, are eight yards apart.

hook: Provided the player is on the same side of the opponent’s pony as the ball, he may spoil the opponent’s shot by putting his mallet in the way of the striking player’s.

knoCk-in: Should a team hit a ball across the opponent’s backline during an attack, the defending team resumes the game with a free hit from the backline where the ball went over. It is equivalent to a goal kick in soccer.

leAVe it: A player who feels he has a better position to strike the ball will tell his teammate who is about to hit it to “leave it”, meaning do not touch it and continue up the field for a pass.

line oF the ball: Crossing the line is the most frequent foul in polo. The line of the ball, namely the imaginary line along which the ball travels, represents a right of way for the player following nearest that line. There are strict rules governing opponents entry in to the right of way.

Mallet: Range in length, usually according to the height of the pony, from 48 to 54 inches. The shaft is normally made from bamboo cane and the head from a hard wood.

nearside and oFFside: The left side of the pony is Nearside. The right side is Offside.

Polo: The word derived from the Balti (a Tibetan language of the Indus valley) term “pulu”, meaning ball.

Positions: There are 4 positions on each team: No. 1 - A goal striker; No. 2 - A forward , primarily for defense; No. 3 - A pivotal player who plays both offense and defense, usually the highest rated player on the team; No. 4 - The most defensive player. All players are rated on a scale of –2 to 10, with the higher rating the better. The word “goal” is usually used after the rating, such as “8-goal” player. However, the rating number does not reflect the number of goals the player scores, but the player’s ability to play overall.

ride-oFF: Two riders may make contact and push each other off the line to prevent the other from striking the ball. It is primarily intended for the ponies to do the pushing, but a player is allowed to use his body, but not his elbows.

saFety: When a defending player hits the ball across his own backline, the other team is awarded a free hit 60 yards from the backline.

teaM handiCaP: Equals the sum of its players’ handicaps (rating). In handicap matches, the team with the lower handicap is awarded the difference in goals at the start of the match.

third Man: The referee sitting at the sidelines who will arbitrate if the two mounted umpires on the field are unable to agree on a foul.

throw-in: The game starts when a ball is thrown between two lined up teams by an Umpire. Also is used when at times play resumes.

treading-in: At half time, the replacement of divots of turf. This is the duty of all the spectators.

queAsY: The feelings a polo player has just before a fall… NP
