During the fair in Pollensa this weekend, plans by nine architect firms for the re-modelling of the old fish market building in the Plaça Major will be exhibited in the restored Can Llobera. Residents are to be invited to submit further suggestions on top of over 60 which had been made by a local group concerned about the preservation of the building. The town hall has indicated that it would like the tourist information office to be relocated to the fish market and has now also opened discussions with the Council of Mallorca regarding a possible interpretation centre for the Tramuntana mountains to be housed there. The former fish market has three floors and the final cost of the conversion is expected to be in the region of €600,000.

¡Hola! It seems November has finally arrived. That familiar autumnal wet and cold feeling reared its ugly head for the first time today. Considering the October we had, there’s no complaining. Now I can’t wait for the next wave of Firas and Fiestas. As if the winter season is quiet?

I’m thrilled to announce the collaboration with the Radio One Mallorca Help a Mallorca Child Christmas Toy Appeal, I know what a giving bunch you all are so there will be tonnes of toys to give out across the island, see page 7 for all the details.

Don’t forget, we go monthly now. The next issues are 4th December, 8th January and 5th February. But keep in touch through all the usual channels, I’d love to see pictures, hear your news and stories.

In the meantime, enjoy the fairs! Joanna

The ESRA (North) Thursday Club in Puerto Pollensa continues to attract ‘customers’ with nice cakes, great tea and coffee and the opportunity to read the English newspapers, but there are others for whom the Thursday Club is a serious occupation. Spanish is now being taught at different levels, greetings cards are being recycled, the artists produce real works of art and some people even come along to sort-out problems with

computers.

Recently Sylvia Warr produced a really attractive cover for the ESRA North laptop computer, and this week her talents were put to even better and more practical use when John Blott, a Thursday Club member and resident in the Residencia in the Port was presented with a quilt for the winter evenings. ESRA North prove, yet again, that you can have fun and help others at the same time.

ESRA North certainly had a busy week last week. The fun started at The Thursday Club, when Jean and Geoff Thomas celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with other members. Jean and Geoff are well known in Puerto Pollensa through the ownership of The Codfather, the famous fish and chip shop. Geoff is also well

known through his church connections

where he has the honorary title of Emeritus Church Warden.

Chair of ESRA North, Janet de Vries, presented Jean and Geoff with a bouquet of flowers and members were delighted

when Geoff produced a celebration card from The Queen.

On Friday, Chris Maynard, the Vice Chair of ESRA

North organized an Arts and Crafts Exhibition in the Vecinos Rooms in the Port. This gave the many talented artists in the port the opportunity to exhibit and share their work, an

opportunity that doesn’t come round much. Among

those exhibiting were Joan Bent, Helen Todd, Jean Meadows, Brian Lowndes, Sylvia Warr and Alfonso Loeffler. There were lots of paintings showing different styles and some delightful pottery and patchwork. This is the first time that ESRA North has organized such an exhibition. Let’s hope it will not be the last.

A Celebration of Life! is a Lunch to raise money for charities supporting people affected by cancer. All food and wine has been donated by the Siurell Restaurant, so every cent will go directly to charity. Tickets have sold out but do pop along for coffee and cake and the raffle from 3pm, Friday 7th.

Our very own Mallorquinista, Charles Nutter, is taking part in a Strictly Come Dancing Event on Saturday the 29th of November at the Pickles Dance Studio, Son Caliu, near Palmanova. Tickets are just €10 and this includes an Indian Curry buffet provided by a local restaurant. There

will be a number of dance demonstrations including audience participation. Doors open at 7.30pm and the event starts at 8 pm. For more information and to reserve tickets contact [email protected]. Car sharing can be coordinated.

Can Picafort sewage plant gets the go-aheadThe Balearics Environment Commission has given the green light to the proposed sewage treatment plant in the Son Bauló part of Can Picafort. The plant, which has been planned since 2003, has been the subject of considerable debate and argument, with Muro and Santa Margalida town halls at loggerheads over its siting. Both town halls made representations to the environment ministry in Madrid, Santa Margalida arguing that the existing plant in Albufera should be extended in order to meet sewage demands of the resorts of Playa de Muro and Can Picafort. Santa Margalida had also sought to have an agreement signed by a former mayor in 2005, which accepted the Son Bauló plan, annulled. Muro has accused councillors in Santa Margalida of having raised recent objections for election reasons, but Santa Margalida and environmental groups have resisted the plant because of its potentially harmful effect on posidonia sea grass.

Partido Popular mayoral candidates selectedFollowing the surprise announcement by Sa Pobla’s mayor Biel Serra that he will not be seeking re-election as mayor this coming May, the Partido Popular in the town has selected another Serra, Margalida, as its mayoral candidate, in other words the name of the person who will be at the top of the list of PP candidates for election. In Muro, the PP has chosen Juan Escalas, currently a councillor with responsibility for, among other things,

tourism and Playa de Muro. In Santa Margalida, former mayor Martí Torres will be the candidate, while in Alcúdia, Coloma Terrasa had announced her intention to stand again in early October. At the time of writing, it is not known if Tomeu Cifre will be the candidate in Pollensa, but the expectation has been that he will be.

Hotels shut for winterNovember comes around and, as with every November, the hotels in the resorts all close down for the winter. The resorts of Can Picafort and Playa de Muro will see no activity until the first cyclists appear towards the end of January. In Puerto Alcúdia, Sunwing’s Nuevas Palmeras will be open, as it always is, mainly for Scandinavian pensioners, while the Botel will be partially open (its suites only). Otherwise, the Ses Dalies and Diana Apartments will keep going, as will Garden Lago. The Vanity is expected to be open in December for the return of Team Sky, but will not be open to other visitors until February. In Puerto Pollensa, Sis Pins and the Galeon Suites will be staying open.

Costas called on to act over illegal mooringsThe most recent meeting of Pollensa council approved a motion calling upon the Costas Authority (part of the national environment ministry) to implement its own Coasts Law in respect of illegal moorings in Pollensa bay. Only the Puerto Pollensa party, the UMP, voted against the motion. In other business, modifications to local taxes for 2015 were also approved. These include a cut to the tax for motor

vehicles and more generous bonus entitlements in respect of property tax. The council also fully supported a motion condemning the aerial fumigation of pine forests. The regional environment ministry has started this spraying in an attempt to better contain the processionary caterpillars, but the chemical used, Dimilin, is said to pose risks to other wildlife and even to humans.

Muro raises doubts over cycle laneThe plan for a cycle route to run along the Carretera Artà from Alcúdia to Son Real and to, in the other direction, connect with the coast road to Puerto Pollensa has been put on hold. On the basis of a report by town hall technicians, Muro says that it cannot afford to spend what would be required for the cycle route to pass through Playa de Muro. The route does pose greater problems in Playa de Muro than in either Alcúdia or Can Picafort because of the narrowness of the English bridge over the Albufera grand canal, the proximity of protected nature park on both sides of the road going towards Can Picafort, and the absence of side-road space in part of the resort. The three municipalities had each agreed to fund the venture, which Muro recognises would be of great value and which it fully supports, but the town hall would be liable to a higher cost than Alcúdia or Santa Margalida because of the obstacles which exist. The Council of Mallorca is also due to supply a grant for the route, but this would be dependent upon funding by the three town halls being in place. Muro has, meanwhile, approved the purchase of a warehouse at a cost of 835,000 euros that will be turned into a central facility for the town’s different

service units, which are currently dispersed in four separate locations.

New courts at Puerto Pollensa sports centreTown hall investment of over €400,000 on the sports centre in Puerto Pollensa will lead to the creation of a third tennis court, a new squash court and four courts for paddle tennis. The project, expected to take six months to complete, will also require some modification to existing facilities, such as the bar. Meanwhile, investment of a different sort in Puerto Pollensa has been announced by the Balearic Ports authority. Over €600,000 are to be spent on an upgrade of the electricity supply system at the port.

Can Franc excluded from protection catalogueThe old Can Franc cottage along Puerto Pollensa’s pinewalk had already been left out of Pollensa town hall’s catalogue of buildings to be protected because of their historical interest, but the town hall had hoped that the Council of Mallorca might declare the cottage to be in the general cultural interest. The Council has finally decided that it won’t make such a declaration, saying that protection of this particular building is a matter for the town hall, which cannot include it in the catalogue as this would involve paying compensation that is reckoned could be as high as €5m. There is already an application for Can Franc to be demolished and for apartments to be built in its place, and that application would now appear likely to be approved.

The Firas certainly prove that things never stop in Mallorca. Inca’s Dijous Bo programme is in full swing, Alcudia has had theirs in the sunshine, this weekend it is the turn of Pollensa and Muro.

Pollensa’s takes over the streets with stalls from artisans of every craft, from textiles to ceramics, shoes to jewellery, furniture to glasswork. Keeping the children happy, La Fira comes with a funfair too. Many a plastic toy will be cried for and much sugary candy will be consumed.

In the Claustre you will find local arts and crafts that you can adorn your Mallorcan house with and the Fira marks an event in many artisans’ calendars. Teixits Vicens, for example, will launch a brand new fabric at the Fair. Many shops will have specials too; take a look below for just a sampling of what will be going on. Have fun!

STONE MOSAICS

Every child looks forward to the arrival of Father Christmas, but there are hundreds of children, here in Mallorca, who are worried that he won’t know where to find them this year. Children who, through no fault of their own, live in a family where a toy is a luxury. These families live day-to-day, they have limited access to money and find it hard to provide for their children. For these children, not getting toys at Christmas, like their friends at school, can be alienating and can highlight their sensitive situation.

TOTN and English Radio Pollensa will be working with Radio One Mallorca on their Help a Mallorcan Child Christmas Toy Appeal. Please donate from now to the 20 December so that together we can help a vulnerable child and bring a smile to their face this Christmas.

You can leave your donations of new or used, but working toys, to our friends at the Allen Graham Charity for Kids shop in Puerto Pollensa, at Euromart (formerly British Food Shop) and Radio Pollensa. If you’re heading down south, drop off points are the Salvation Army in Santa Ponca, Palmanova, and Palma and the Mediterranea centre in Portals Nous.

Please take a look at www.radioonemallorca.com for more information. And don’t forget to keep an eye on the TOTN/EnglishRadio Pollensa Facebook pages where more information will be posted about the campaign in the north. If you would like to help in anyway, please do get in touch with Joanna at [email protected].

Real Mallorca 1 - 0 Sabadell This was not a pretty spectacle but results sometimes have to be ground out in this fashion. Substitute, Arana converted a penalty in the second half and that was enough to secure the three points for the islanders.

Real Mallorca 2 - 1 Lugo This was the second consecutive home win and a much better performance. Asensio was the star of the show. At one point in the first half he collected a ball in his own half of the pitch and preceded to run at the visitors. Two defenders tried to foul him but he was too strong and quick. His final shot was inches wide of the post. It would have been a sublime goal if only the shot was slightly more accurate. In the second half he provided a cross for striker Scepovic to fire home the opening goal. A smart finish from Scepovic shortly afterwards was the reward for some amazing attacking play. Lugo did pull a goal back but this Mallorca defence is now made of sterner stuff and comfortably saw out the game. The players celebrated together at the final whistle and the fans were a happy bunch. Long may it continue.

Road safety is an issue as we move into darker days and cooler temperatures that bring the hardcore sports enthusiasts out. Cyclists can be a bugbear of islanders as they seemingly hog the road in packs. Likewise, cyclists suffer from angry drivers who can be quite ignorant of the rules of the road. This is clearly something the local government, the Balearic Cycling Federation and the Traffic Department

want to tackle as they have produced this very handy document in English and German.

The main points for drivers are that groups of Cyclists have right of way, when the first has already started to cross or has entered a roundabout.

Also, cyclists ARE allowed to cycle two abreast and a driver can only overtake if there is a 1.5m gap between. So keep that in mind when you’re following a trail of cyclists.

For cyclists, don’t travel in large clusters, only two abreast. On roads without a hard shoulder, cycle in single file. The usual safety rules (helmet, adequate lighting, no headphones etc) apply.

The Hour Record has seen the 50km threshold smashed twice this year, first by Jens Voigt in September and then Austria’s Matthias Brändle on the 30th October. It’s been on Bradley Wiggins’ mind and just as he steps up his road to Rio training, the word is that he will try his hand (or legs) at the Hour Record in summer next year. And he may well do it here on the island, as Diario de Mallorca announced, he has had talks about staging the attempt at the El Palma Arena. He’s hoping that his fans holidaying here would watch it and support him.

In canoeing, the Pollensan Olympian, Sete Benevides, has also started his training programme for his ticket to Rio. He needs to qualify, but his fourth place in the C1 200m finals at the 2012 London Games and his World and European Championship silver and bronze medals put him in good stead.

It has often been said that a week in politics is a long time. Four weeks in the fortunes of Real Mallorca amounts to the same thing. During that time the club have won four consecutive games scoring 9 goals in the process and conceding just 2. This has seen Mallorca move from bottom of the league to 11th position and just 3 points off the promotion play-off places. Wonder-kid Marco Asensio has been in sparkling form. Serbian striker Marco Scepovic has also discovered some form (and fitness) and is now living up to his reputation as an instinctive goal scorer. The basis of any good football team is a solid defence. Ghanaian Kazim Adams has been paired with Mallorca-born Pedro Bigas in the centre of defence. Bigas has recently returned from an injury lay-off and the two players are forging a great partnership. Goalkeeper Cabrero is benefiting from the cover they provide. Even the much maligned leftback, another Serbian, Gulan is looking good at this level. Rumours are rife that Asensio will leave the club in the January transfer window. He is only 18 and his talent is breathtaking. Many bigger clubs are monitoring him and his future looks assured.

Hopefully he will stay until the end of the season and give Mallorca the impetus to mount a promotion challenge.

Of course it wouldn’t be Mallorca without off-field matters taking the gloss off the team’s performance.

German Utz Claassen is looking increasingly likely to take control of the club and he is steadily acquiring the necessary shares to give him a majority. He has appointed his wife Annette as an administrator for the board meetings. Claassen alienated the fans by

declaring the recent public demonstrations against the board as inconsequential. After months without

an appearance at a match Claassen took his seat in the directors box, accompanied by his wife, for the Lugo game.

A number of fans unfurled banners to let him know their feelings. The words are unprintable! All the fans want is for the existing board to clear out completely and for a new honest and straightforward investor to take over. It is a pipedream but the team’s efforts are putting a smile on everyone’s faces at last.
