I’m in a quandary. Why do some Americans think the complete abandonment of the ideals our country was founded on is a good idea? Many people have concluded that the educaon system is a big part of the issues we face. Yet teachers aren’t the prob- lem. They only do what their union and districts tell them to do, so they can no longer discipline misbehaving students, and everyone gets a “parcipaon” trophy. What beer way to indoctrinate people than to “start ‘em young, and train ‘em right”? I grew up with a lifelong love of learning with God and family as a base, morals, hones- ty, compassion and the personal responsibility that all moms and dads used to impart to their kids. Today, we have one parent “families”, baby daddies who walk away from their obligaons, rampant welfare, food stamps, etc. Take a child and teach that child one set of facts. Make sure they are not capable of thinking for themselves. Fill that kid with fear of the future. These things eat away at self-esteem and the determinaon to live your best life. Neighborhood schools which fostered community awareness are a thing of the past. In the late fifties a movement began to introduce a new concept for our society. Socialism means We the

People cede all rights to the government. At its worst, it destroys whole nations, cripples economies, and

quashes innovation because everyone is brought down to the same level, except the elites running the gov-

ernment. Can you imagine your doctor receiving a salary equal to a garbage truck driver? I’m not exaggerating;

look at Cuba and Venezuela as examples of once-thriving economies that cannot sustain their own people.

Sixteen-year-old Greta Thunberg is now the poster child for the eco-maniacs touting the “Green New

Deal” as the answer to all our problems. She spouted off in the U.S. Congress and United Nations, giving

everyone a dose of nonsense as if she understood what she was talking about. She angrily tore into any-

one not abandoning fossil fuels for “environmentally safe” fuel. Those wind farms aren’t made out of

plastic. Ore is mined, steel is made, trucks are driven and not much carbon is saved. Audubon estimates

wind turbines kill an estimated 140,000 to 328,000 birds each year. How is that better? And what about

India and China; I don’t think they are willing to damage their economies by making carbon emissions

their focus.

Capitalism grew American into the powerhouse it is today. Socialism has failed in every country where

leaders took too much power from the people.

What can we do about this? Speak up and speak out. If you have grandchildren, they still have a chance

to excel if we halt the insanity of socialism. If we do nothing, within 20-30 years it will be too late, and all

will be lost.

Author Sally Gillies, Ormond Beach, has been heavily involved in the Republican Party since 1985. She ran

for public office three times (that’s another story), has been a member of RCSVC and many local Republi-

can Clubs.

6 to 8 hours a day. But never on Sunday, unless we are having a special event.

Support for Free Speech Rights Comes from a Brick

By Ellen Darden

Afien Casey, Secretary of the Republican Club of Southeast Volusia County, did what hundreds of other resi-

dents of-- and visitors to -- New Smyrna Beach have for many years. She purchased a brick paver to be

placed on the sidewalks of Flagler Avenue. Like so many before, she wished to express a sentiment that

showed how close she and her great-grandson Brandon were.

The bricks are inscribed with a wide variety of names, dates of special occasions, and the purchasers’ person-

al messages. When Afien purchased and had the brick inscribed and installed over a year ago, no questions

were raised. She received no guidelines or information about restrictions. She and Brandon, who calls her

Oma, selected their message:

After a year of no negative comments and presumably lots of smiles and/or expectations of freedom of

speech, one local noticed it with umbrage, photographed it, posted the picture on social media and set off

massive outrage! This firestorm was answered with an outpouring of critical media reports and interviews,

along with incredible support from believers in the sentiment expressed and Constitutional Rights.

Based on the publicity and opposing sentiments, the Flagler Avenue Merchants Association ordered that the

object of contention be dug up and replaced with a blank brick. This authoritarian decision further fueled the

fire, and demands for free exercise of speech eventually won the day. On Friday, September 14, 2019, at

5:30 p.m., the original brick was put back where it belonged in a quickly arranged ceremony that included

Afien Casey, her family, friends and many of her supporters.

Justice was served, and the curious may view the baked lump of clay with its original inscription in the side-

walk in front of Jewelry of Joy at Flagler Avenue.

This article was written by a 26 yr old college student by the name of Alyssa Ahlgren, who's in grad school for her MBA. What a GREAT perspective…

My Generation is Blind to the Prosperity Around Us!

I'm sitting in a small coffee shop near Nokomis (Florida) trying to think of what to write about. I scroll through my newsfeed on my phone looking at the latest headlines of presidential candidates calling for policies to "fix" the so-called injustices of capitalism. I put my phone down and continue to look around.

I see people talking freely, working on their MacBook's, ordering the food they get in an instant, seeing cars go by outside, and it dawned on me. We live in the most privileged time in the most prosperous na-tion and we've become completely blind to it.

Vehicles, food, technology, freedom to associate with whom we choose. These things are so ingrained in our American way of life we don't give them a second thought.

We are so well off here in the United States that our poverty line begins 31 times above the global aver-age. Thirty-One Times!!!

Virtually no one in the United States is considered poor by global standards. Yet, in a time where we can order a product off Amazon with one click and have it at our doorstep the next day, we are unapprecia-tive, unsatisfied, and ungrateful. ??

My generation has only seen prosperity. We have no contrast. We didn't live in the great depression or live through two world wars, the Korean War, The Vietnam War or we didn't see the rise and fall of so-cialism and communism.

We don't know what it's like to live without the internet, without cars, without smartphones. We don't have a lack of prosperity problem. We have an entitlement problem, an ungratefulness problem, and it's spreading like a plague."
