All-wheel Drive (AWD) Hardware and TechnologyFord developed the Police Interceptor AWD system with direct feedback from EVOC instructors to provide optimal handling for pursuit driving and for ease of driving in dry, wet, snow and icy road conditions. The AWD system includes a preemptive torque transfer strategy that has the ability to transfer torque before wheelslip occurs. In addition, AWD is paired with standard AdvanceTrac, giving the vehicle the ability to direct torque to any one wheel to enhance vehicle response and traction. To keep the AWD system cool during extreme pursuit driving, the control system includes monitoring algorithms, and the power transfer unit (PTU) is specially equipped with a cooler that is integrated with the engine cooling system.System reacts within milliseconds to distribute necessary torque to all four wheels.
