Slimmers show theyhave got real talent

A GROUP of Slimming World Consultants fromStratford has got the magic touch when it comesto weight loss this New Year, according to TVpresenter Stephen Mulhern.

The team, who run Slimming World groups in Strat-ford, was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up toStephen when he presented the annual Slimming WorldAwards.

He co-hosted December’s event with the organisa-tion’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE.

The group from Stratford was Laura Schofield, SarahJones, Faye Fox and Sarah Evans

Laura said meeting Britain’s Got More Talent hostStephen was a wonderful way to round off a great 12months.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our members. They’ve lostfantastic amounts of weight throughout 2016, with manyof them making their weight loss dreams come true byhitting their target weight, improving their health andconfidence, and more.

“It’s so rewarding to see people being able to do thingsthat they didn’t think possible before losing weight, whether that’s having more energy and confidence, wearing smaller clothes, taking up new hobbies, reducingmedication or doing more with their family and friends.”

Stephen said: “So many slimmers talked about howtheir weight loss has allowed them to start really livingand be the people that they always dreamed of being, sothe people who run the groups are clearly very impor-tant.”

Petition calls forone-way u-turnA PETITION has been launched calling for someof the changes to Warwick town centre to bedropped.

It has been set up by Nicola Cooknell and callsfor the reversal of the one-way system along TheButts, and High Street and Jury Street, whichforms part of the £550,000 project.

Councillors approved the work last month. The petition has been signed by 24 people as

the Midweek went to press yesterday, Monday. It reads: “With increasing numbers of residen-

tial properties and Warwick being a strong localemployment centre for the region it is thereforecritical that the council act with the interests ofall road users to ensure traffic flow improvesrather than worsens.

“The proposed changes are counter-intuitiveto improving traffic flow around what is alreadya congested town centre, will make commutingonly worse and will likely cause increased emis-sions due to traffic being stationery for longer, thus causing greater damage to public health.”

The proposals were the subject of a six-weekconsultation in the summer.

They also include wider pavements and newpedestrian crossing points, cycle-contraflow onone-way streets, traffic restrictions in CastleLane, priority signals for buses, a review of sig-nage and street furniture, removal of all yellowlines and the introduction of a RestrictedParking Zone, junction alterations at key gate-ways, a 20mph zone, and extensive changes tothe layout of Priory Road.

Warwickshire County Council will respond tothe petition when it expires on Friday, 24thMarch.

County cashes in on top women’s cycling eventTHE Aviva Women’s Cycling Tourprovided a healthy boost to the localeconomy when stage two of lastyear’s five-stage race passedthrough Stratford and other parts ofthe county.

Stratford hosted the finishing line as thetop female cyclists who rode the length of

the county in June, with 75,000 spectatorsgathered along the route from Atherstone, via the University of Warwick, Kenil-worth, Warwick town centre and Shipston, before finishing in Stratford.

And an evaluation by WarwickshireCounty Council published this week hasshown it provided a massive boost to War-wickshire’s tourism and catering indus-tries with 40,000 of the spectators comingfrom outside of the county and an esti-mated one in seven staying overnight.

According to the council the food anddrink industry cashed in to the tune of

£2million of spending, while other sectorsalso benefitted, including local shops andthose offering souvenirs (£740,000),hotels and other accommodation(£540,000), and local transport(£150,000).

County Council leader and portfolioholder for economic development, CllrIzzi Seccombe, said: “It has been excel-

lent for local businesses and offered achance to showcase our county at its best. The huge numbers of visitors meant thatmany were able to take a share of thespoils that an event such as this provides.

“Of course, there are more than justeconomic benefits and I hope our resi-dents have been inspired to get out andenjoy this fantastic sport.”

SG DoorsRoller Shutter Garage Doors Specialist

At SG Doors we specialise in the fi tting of bespoke double skinned, insulated, remote control, electric roller garage doors that can be supplied to your specifi cations, including a range of different colours.

Essentially a Roller Garage Door is an insulated double skin aluminium curtain protecting your garage. With the double side brush in the guide runners and a curtain that rolls right to the fl oor, it is good for excluding draughts as well as effi cient and convenient at both restricting and allowing access to the garage.

FOAM FILLED INSULATED ALUMINIUM SLATS

SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL Garage DOORSThe space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage, giving you access to roof joists that would have otherwise been occupied by the garage doors. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.

The design of Roller Garage Doors means they are effi cient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the garage door roller system means the doors roll directly up into a top roll system mounted above the door frame.

‘Mad fool’ navigatesThames challenge

FUNDRAISER Stuar tKettell is going to try andtravel 130 miles fromOxford to London on theRiver Thames — but inhis own mad-cap stylethere is a twist.

Stuart, aged 52, fromHatton Park, is raisingmoney for MacmillanCancer Support along theway, as he has done forthe past 12 years. In thattime he has raised£50,000 for the charity.

An Aquaskipper doesnot float, and is only heldabove the surface by con-stant skipping on the footrests.

That creates lift on thehydrofoils similar to thelift created on an aero-plane wing.

As soon as Stuart getstired it sinks and he getsvery cold and wet.

No one in the world hasattempted any kind of dis-tance on one of these letalone 100 miles or more, and he has been told thechallenge is virtuallyimpossible.

Undeterred, Stuart willthis summer set off fromOxford for his mammothchallenge which he thinkswill take him seven to tendays to complete.

Stuart’s previous chal-lenges for Macmillanhave included pushing asprout up to the summit ofMount Snowden usingonly his nose.

Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the most sought-after holiday and visitor destinations in the UK, and theStratford-upon-Avon Visitor Guide is the official guide to where to stay, what to see and do, and whereto eat, in and around the historic town.

The Free glossy A5 guide has been produced by the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald in conjunction withStratforward BID and Shakespeare’s England, and is available from the Herald’s office on RotherStreet, Stratford, the Visitor Information Centre on Bridgefoot, and many other outlets across southWarwickshire — and beyond!

Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the most sought-after holiday and visitor destinations in the UK,not only because it is set in beautifulWarwickshire countryside on the banks of theriver that gives it its name, but because thetown is steeped in culture and history.

Being the birthplace of the poet and playwrightWilliam Shakespeare, understandably it offers aunique insight into ‘olde’ England and visitors canexperience first hand the atmosphere and history ofthe buildings where he was brought up, his familylived and even Holy Trinity Church where he wasbaptised and buried. REMEMBER the pleasure of owning your brand new conservatory; that extraspace you had longed for and the dreams of relaxing in the evening, as the sunwent down. However, those dreams soon evaporated as the sun’s heat madethe space too uncomfortable to sit in and the noise of the rain hitting the clearroof meant you couldn’t hear yourself speak. But worse was to come as winterarrived and your conservatory became cold, damp and uninhabitable. Highenergy costs and the fact that any warmth generated went straight out of theroof meant this option was in most cases unaffordable. So most conservatoriesremain unused for up to six months of the year.

Even in thecoldest ofweather yourconservatorycan be warm

Freephone 0800 917 5109 or visit www.totalroofcare.co.uk for details.

Total Roofcare has the perfect answer, by transforming your conservatory into a space you can use all year round, even in the coldest weather. By simply changing yourexisting, inefficient glass or polycarbonate roof into a solid, tiled ThermeRoof, you cancreate a thermally efficient room that can be used throughout the year and without sky-highenergy bills.

Total Roofcare’s nationwide installation teams can transform your conservatory in just afew days. But that’s not all, with a choice of Edwardian,Victorian, lean-to or gable end designs in a selection of tile and slate colours, matchingfascias, soffits and internal finishes, a ThermeRoof installation will make your conservatorypart of your home.

Every ThermeRoof installation comes with a 10 year, fully transferable, insurance backedguarantee. Talk to Total Roofcare now to arrange a no obligation appointment to obtain a free survey of your existing conservatory and get an accurate, fixed cost to carry out the work.

A PLAN that outlines the fightagainst crime has been launched.

Warwickshire Police and Crime Commis-sioner, Philip Seccombe, said victims andsurvivors are put first in his first blueprint forpolicing since being elected last year.

It sets out plans to ensure efficient andeffective policing, to protect people fromharm, and prevent and reduce crime.

Measures to achieve these aims include acommitment to increase numbers of policeofficers, special constables and PCSOsduring his term of office.

Officers will be equipped with the latestmobile technology, reducing the need forthem to return to police stations andincreasing their visibility in the community.

It also explains that the force is beingtransformed to meet the changing nature ofcrime, including measures to tackle cyber-crime, child sexual exploitation, hate crime, terrorism and modern slavery. The plan saysWarwickshire Police will also place anincreased focus on protecting the most vul-nerable in society.

Mr Seccombe said: “In creating my firstPolice and Crime Plan for Warwickshire I

have listened carefully to the views of thepublic and victims of crime, talked widelywith officers and staff at WarwickshirePolice and had many discussions with ourkey partners and groups within the third andvoluntary sector.

“The nature of crime is changing and theway our communities are policed needs toreflect that, while also recognising that thepublic rightly expects strong and visiblecommunity-based policing as itsbedrock. This plan will strengthen policingacross Warwickshire and build on the strongfoundations which already exist.

“I want to ensure that the numbers ofpolice officers, special constables andPCSOs can be increased over the levels wesee today, through improvements in effi-ciency and better use of technology todeliver a service which maximises theresources that are available to it and canmeet the challenges of the future head-on.”

Ex-apprentice is business chiefA MAN who started life as an engineeringapprentice is the new president of the Coventryand Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.

John Nollett has a deep-rooted background inmanufacturing and engineering in the region, having begun his career with Rugby-basedPailton Engineering in 1987 as an apprenticeand then climbing the ranks to be groupmanaging director. He takes over the chamberrole from Paul Carvell.

John said: “For many, many years, I havebeen involved with this great organisation andhave seen first-hand the support that it gives tobusinesses across this wonderful region.”

Business leaders in south Warwickshirehave expressed concern about a lack of newemployment land. See Thursday’s Herald forthe full story.

Stratford slipdown to fifthSTRATFORD slipped down to fifth in the Mid-lands 1 West table following a 17-11 defeat toMoseley Oak at Pearcecroft on Saturday.

The visitors played the conditions perfectly to condemnthe Black and Whites to their eighth loss of the season.

Moseley scored all of their points in the first half via twoconverted tries and a penalty, with Stratford’s only responsecoming from the boot of Jack Young.

A comeback looked on the cards when Stratford scored atry of their own from Matt Newman, but Moseley held firmto seal an impressive league double.

“We knew what to expect from Moseley and there are nocomplaints there,” said Stratford director of rugby, TomRance.

“They picked a game plan that suited them and the con-ditions, so credit to them. I thought we played some goodrugby, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.”

In Midlands 4 West (South), Alcester move to the top ofthe table with a 27-10 victory over previous leaders Brom-yard. Full report and reaction in this week’s Herald.
