Essay pol4171.ca/syllabus

This formal essay offers you an opportunity to explore in more detail a self-selected aspect of the course material. For the essay, you should seek out additional resources than those listed in the Course Calendar below.

Typically, essays would combine aspects of the “Foundations” part of the course with a specific social movement […], for example by examining specific use of legitimizing and de-legitimizing practices of the anti-free trade movement.

You are free to choose the same social movement case that you have covered in your in-class presentation as the starting point for this essay. You can also choose a comparative essay, by considering the same issue across two different movements.

Your essay should extend the analyses and discussions from the class to a deeper level and showing your knowledge and understanding of the topics at the center of this course.

Essay

In addition to demonstrating adequate knowledge of the course material your essay should also demonstrate your ability for critical thinking and should feature clear writing, complete and consistent referencing and very good analytical skills.

For referencing, any recognized citation style acceptable but ensure to apply it consistently; the APA style is recommended by the Faculty. There is also a Style Guide available on the University website which covers the formal requirements (structure, citations, references) for essays at the Faculty of Social Sciences and also offers some good advice on how to logically structure your essay.http://socialsciences.uottawa.ca/sites/default/files/public/eng/documents/WritingandStyleGuide2010-2011_001.pdf
