Families of many backgrounds have traditionsoriginating in their religion. Jewish families placean empty chair at the table for Elijah during theirPassover meals. Buddhist homes often have a cornerwith a shrine commemorating their departing familymembers. Roman Catholic families hang crucixes ontheir walls. Protestant homes often have a large familyBible. ese are just a tiny sampling of symbolic ob-jects that carry meaning generation after generation.

My parents practiced what they called FamilyWorship before we went to bed. Part of this tediouslyboring ritual consisted of reading a chapter of the Bi-ble every night. Each family member read one verse, oldest to youngest, and the sequence repeated to the

end of the chapter.Occasionally we got a break when my father was

away on a business trip or at an evening meeting thatlasted beyond our bedtime. On those special occa-sions, Momma used our big illustrated childrens Biblestory book instead of the Bible for Family Worship. What a treat! We would beg to read more than onestory. I soaked in the representations of the Garden ofEden and the animals arriving at Noahs Ark. Imagesof dramatic moments in the lives of Abraham, Joseph,Moses, Ruth, King David, Elijah, Daniel, and Esther

still linger in my memory gallery.

When I taught at a mission school for Liberianand American children in the 1970s, familiar biblicalcontent created a link between children of contrast-ing backgrounds. ey all loved to act out David andGoliath, the Good Samaritan, and many other biblicalevents.

But in the northern and western hemispheressome prominent theorists and theologians had de-cided that Bible stories were too violent for childrenand too unbelievable for adults. By the 1960s, thestories that built faith from the Old Testament haddisappeared from Sunday School curricula in manymainline denominations. e 1928 Book of CommonPrayer appointed only lessons from the New Testa-ment for use on Sunday morning. e 1979 BCP re-stored isolated selections from the Old Testament forSunday readings. e Revised Common Lectionaryin the 21st century lists an option to follow Old Tes-tament stories across several Sundays.

e restoration of these memorable biblical sto-ries and characters introduces them to many adults for

the rst time in their lives. During the month of Junethe lectionary appoints several stories of an emotionaleccentric, and confrontational prophet named Eli-jah. He appeared centuries later with Moses on theMount of Transguration with Jesus. e Christianarrangement of the Old Testament concludes withthese somber but hopeful words:

Lo, I will send you the prophet Elijah before thegreat and terrible day of the LORD comes. He will

LCAC is contacting local churches in searchof help in stocking the food pantry. LCAC is cur-rently running some extreme shortages in termsof food and need help organizing food drives andgetting more food in so they can feed the familiesthey serve. If available to help, contact Ian Kraft(new food pantry manag-er) at [email protected] call 703-339-9064. efood pantry is especiallyin need of canned fruit, canned meat and cereal.

turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come andstrike the land with a curse. (Malachi 4:5-6)

e empty chair at the Passover meal expresses the hope for Elijahs return. Perhaps the changes in the lection-ary begin to fulll this prophecy in mainline churches. Come discover what about this man captivated the ancient

Israelites and still grips the hopes of people today.

Pohick Community of Hope lay chaplains are often entrusted with information from and about thoseto whom they minister. is information, including the care receivers identity, is provided with the perfectlyreasonable expectation that it will be held in the strictest condence. is should not be surprising to anyonewho has conded in a priest, been treated by a health care provider, or has received professional counseling oradvice. In each of these circumstances, information is vital to a successful outcome, but potentially embarrass-ing and harmful, if thoughtlessly divulged. is is why there are so many laws concerning condentiality inthe medical and legal industries.

Condentiality is a standard of conduct by which all should live - it promotes trust, strengthens relation-ships, fosters respect, and aids healing in a Christian community. Scripture frequently reminds us of the harmill considered and unguarded conversations can do. Proverbs 10:19 states, When words are many, transgres-sion is not lacking, but the prudent are restrained in speech. Later, in Proverbs 12:18, Rash words are likesword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

e problem, of course, is that human beings are often tempted to pass along information about others outof concern. But, even when motives are noble, such as making prayer requests, the careless release of informa-tion could be painful to the person who rst shared it.

Community of Hope lay chaplains are trained and are constantly aware of the necessity to treat all infor-

mation they receive condentially. In the interest of responsible pastoral care, lay chaplains will not mentionthe names of care receivers, even with other lay chaplains, nor will they discuss the nature of their visits withother parishioners because condentiality implies caring, which is the foundation of the ministry.

For more information about this aspect of the Community of Hopes ministry, please contact Nancy Bi-reley or Carol Heddleston.

So far, so good. As the Assistant Rector has ad-

vised you in church, she is keeping a countdown of thedays left until the Rector returns from his sabbatical. But so far, so good.

During the Rectors absence, the Assistant hascharge of the spiritual welfare of the parish while theadministrative responsibilities fall to the Wardens. Asa result, I have been attending weekly sta meetingsand anticipate that the Junior Warden, Neil Sunder-land, will attend some as well. e Vestry is committedto stepping up and making sure that Pohick remains avibrant, Christ-centered community while the Rector

is gone. We hope that Don will nd the parish in atleast as good a shape as he left it. We ask your prayersfor the parish, for Ruth, for the parish sta and its layleaders during the months ahead.

At the May meeting, your Vestry had a number ofimportant issues on its agenda. First, we heard an ex-cellent presentation from Terri Hayes and CharlotteKnipling regarding their proposal for a Pohick GiftStore in the back room of the Vestry House. In myopinion, this would be an excellent complement tothe expanded tours and events that the docents havebeen leading recently and an appropriate outreach ef-fort. However, to be successful it will take signicantsupport from the parish, and the Vestry has asked thatRuth and I provide an opportunity for parish inputin the near future. In the meantime, the proposal hasbeen referred to the Outreach Commission, underthe able leadership of Kristina Myers and Reed Hed-dleston.

Second, the Vestry appointed our parish represen-tatives to the diocesan council and regional councils.

Congratulations to John Pasour and Rita Stankwitzwho will represent Pohick at the diocesan level and toJim Hayes and Carolyn Cockroft, who will representus within region six of the diocese. Jim Hayes and KenForesman will serve as alternates at the diocesan andregional levels respectively.

Finally, we adopted a number of measures relatingto the cemetery. Most importantly, the Vestry adopteda plan for the sale of burial rights in plots that we havedeemed abandoned and are working to take the legalsteps necessary to recover. Dont worry - if you have

burial rights they havent been abandoned! By aban-doned, we mean a plot purchased more than 30 yearsago in which there has never been a burial and/or theperpetual care fees have not been paid. Additionallythe rst step is to notify the owner of the burial rights

at the last known address, and if we get a responsefrom the owner or his/her proven heirs, the owner orheirs will retain the burial rights upon the paymentof any outstanding fees. As announced in the weeklybulletin and the Pohick weekly tidings, the CemeteryWarden will start a waiting list on Sunday, June 2, formembers of the parish who have pledged nancialsupport to the parish in 2013 and who are interestedin either purchasing burial rights in a recovered plotor swapping the location of their burial rights to adierent location. Swapping is not ordinarily an op-

tion, but it will be through November 2013 with thepayment of a $200 per plot administrative fee. In Oc-tober and November 2013, the Cemetery Warden willwork through the list and take care of the purchase orswapping of burial rights in the abandoned plots. Ifyou want to be added to the waiting list, please sendRusty an email with the words POHICK CEME-TERY in the subject line. Rusty will assemble thewaiting list from the emails received starting on June2. After November 30, 2013, burial rights will be soldsubject to the existing rules of the cemetery.

e Vestry increased the Saturday burial fee andthe Cemetery Wardens compensation for a Satur-day burial. Finally, we made some technical changesto the way the cemeterys perpetual care fund Boardof Managers is selected and operates. If you have anyquestions regarding the cemetery, contact our Cem-etery Warden, Rusty Booth, Neil Sunderland or me.

As you can see, Ruth, the Vestry, and I are com-mitted to keeping things moving during the Rectorssabbatical. Both Ruth and I are available if you have

any concerns or think that something needs our atten-tion. My email address is [email protected] andmy phone number is 703-680-0866. ank you foryour support while we all pull together to allow Donand his family this importantopportunity to rest and rechargetheir batteries. I know we all lookforward to their safe return andhearing about their time in Is-rael.

Reverend Tom Costa was asked by the directors of Gunston Hall Plantation in Mason Neck to lead a periodchurch service on Sunday, May 5, as part of the e Revolution is Coming to Gunston Hall: 1781 Raid on the

Potomac event.A Sabbath morning truce was declared as a large group of British troops, Continental militia, and camp fol-lowers from the reenactor units came together under one of the ancient oak trees in front of the mansion for anAnglican Morning Prayer service from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Several visitors also came specicallyto attend the colonial-era service.

One of the reenactors, who was amusician, oered to play her violin to ac-company the closing hymn. Since it wasoutdoors and not in church, Tom as Rev.Massey asserted that it would be permis-sible to sing one of the Rev. Mr. Wesleys

new hymns. And for all choir membersand musicians, the historically correcthymn and tune for 1781 was Hymn No.535: Charles Wesleys Ye Servants ofGod sung to the 1765 tune Paderborn.

Tom and his wife Susan, who led thesinging, are members of the Historic Po-hick Church Docent Guild.
