POETRY WRITING: Week 1 Thursday 30th April 2020 Learning Intention: I am learning to understand how similes are used in poems. Success Criterion: I can use similes to describe myself in a poem titled “Me”.

Here are two examples:

The school library is like a mountain of books. The pile of homework was as big as a blue whale.

ME

I am as quick as a _________________________

My eyes are as blue as _____________________

My ears can hear like a _____________________

My brain is as smart as a ___________________

My nose can smell like a ____________________

My heart is as big as _______________________.

A simile is a comparison between two things, using words “like” or “as”.

Now try making a simile poem about you!

What are your qualities?

POETRY WRITING: Week 9 Tuesday 23rd June 2020 Learning Intention: I am learning to understand how personification is used in poems. Success Criterion: I can use language features (such as personification) when composing poems.

Action verbs list: Objects:

Poetic sentences:

________________________________________________________________________

Task 1:

1. Make a list of 7 action verbs that describe things that humans do.

2. Now, take a look around the room and write down 7 objects that you see.

3. Look at your two lists and find funny or interesting ways to combine the objects with the verbs.

For example, you might come up with “pencil laughing” or “sandwich whispers.” Use these word combinations to create poetic sentences about each object. For example: “My chicken sandwich whispers loudly that it hates being wrapped in plastic.”
