I am _______________________ going to do a job that makes me happy!

Read the poems on slides 3, 4, 5 and 6. Listen to ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ by Dr. Seuss on slide
7. What theme do all of these poems have in common?
When I grow up, I want to be a dentist
Astronaut or mage apprentice.
I want to be a dancer, an artist, a king.
I'm hoping to stand on a stage and sing.
When I grow up, I want to be a lawyer,
Or have lead role in the play Tom Sawyer.
I'll be a comedian, and make people laugh!
Or the CEO with a thousand staff.
I'll be a waitress, a teacher, a vet.
Snow White's eighth dwarf that no one has met!
I might be a chef, or a scientist.
How about architect or alchemist?
When I grow up, I'll be a song writer
Or maybe your friendly, next-door firefighter.
I'll be a technician or pharmacy worker,
A fashion designer or New York stock broker.
I'm going to be everything, just you wait and see!
But I think in the end I'm just going to be me.
Poem 1
Sonja Eliason
Wednesday 1st July 2020WALT: understand how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning.
Can you identify a theme?
Today at school they asked me,
What do you want to be?
I thought and thought for a long while,
And gave my answer with a smile.
When I grow up I want to be a wizard,
Waving my wand and casting spells that are quite hard!
Fly on my broom through the night,
Then rest the next day before my flight.
When I grow up I want to be an inventor,
Making new tools and creations from my imagination centre!
They will change the world with their usefulness and fun, Making everyone happy - from politicians to my mum.

Can you identify a theme?
You can be
An artistic Actor or a brainy Barrister
A clever Conductor or a dynamic Dancer
An evil Enemy or a fantastic Friend
A green-fingered Gardener or a healing Herbalist
An interesting Inventor or a jovial jolly Juggler
A keen Kitchen-designer or a loggerheaded Lumberjack
A melodious Musician or a neat Newsreader
An over-the-top Opera singer or a princely-pain Pop star
A quipping Quiz-master or a rich Rugby-player
A serious scientist or a typewriting Traveller
An uppity Umpire or a vigorous Vet
A wonderful Winner or an expert Xylophonist
A yelling Yachtsperson or a zealous Zoologist

Poem 3
Wednesday 1st July 2020WALT: understand how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning.
Can you identify a theme? What do you want to be?
What do you want to be?
What do you want to be?
Hey listen kid, you don’t have to tell me–
I’m just here to read some poetry.
You can leave now if you want.
You’re completely free, you see.
But, before you go, let me tell you,
I’m not here to tell you about birds and bees and trees
And bananas and farmers and poetry things.
This poem is a question,
And I’m asking what you dream and feel and things.
You see, maybe you want to be famous.
Maybe you want to be an astronaut and explore Uranus.
Maybe you want to be the craziest stunt lady Hollywood’s ever seen.
Maybe you want to buy some flashy mansion
And spend all your time keeping it clean.
Maybe you’re a dancer and Bollywood’s more your scene.
Maybe you’re a natural,
Maybe you’re going to have work hard at it.
Maybe you’re a punk singer and you want to smash…it…up.
Maybe you like nice stuff.
Maybe to get it you’re going to act all tough.
Maybe you’re going to be sweet.
Maybe you’re going to meet and greet.
Maybe you just want to help people.
Whatever your dream,
I’m just here to remind you that you can be whatever you want to be
And you can have anything, you see.
Now if you’re like me you’re going to want it all for free.
But like me and like lots of other people like me,
In the end you’re going to see
That if you want to be what you want to be
Then you are going to have believe
And work real hard.
It’s up to you.
You’ve got to decide for yourself you see.
Now, tell me - what do you want to be?

Rhyming Couplets
A rhyming couplet is two lines of the
same length that rhyme and complete
one thought. There is no limit to the
length of the lines. Rhyming words are
words that sound the same when
spoken, they don't necessarily have to
be spelt the same.Alliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of
the same sound or letter at the
beginning of each or most of
the words in a sentence. The
easiest way to use alliteration
would be to repeat the
starting letter of the words.

Activity 2: Using your list, can you have a go at making some rhyming couplets? This will help you when you come to write your own poem on Thursday. For example:

Thursday 2nd July 2020Extension Activity
★ Know your poem really well so you can focus on the
performance.
★ Think about the tone of voice you are going to use
on certain words or lines. Can you slow down, speed
up or emphasise certain parts?
★ As you are reading your work out loud, you may
hear certain parts that don’t sound quite right. This is a
chance for you to edit and improve.
★ Be confident and enjoy it.
★ Speak really clearly so that your audience can hear
each word.
★Now be brave and have a go at performing your
poem.
Poetry can come alive when it
is read out loud and performed.
If you would like to, practise
performing your poem out loud
and share it with your class
teacher.
Here are some tips .
