The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is dedicated to building upon its tradition of excellence in education, research, public engagement, and economic development. Its almost 3,000 faculty members discover and create new knowledge. Their work is an economic engine for the state and is recognized with many of the world’s top academic and creative awards. The campus’ outstanding academic programs, extraordinary resources, and bountiful opportunities attract top-caliber students. They join research teams, spend semesters abroad, create art in old and new ways, and lead and participate in hundreds of student organizations. The Urbana campus has more than 425,000 alumni who are global leaders across the spectrum of human endeavor.

Restored Alma Mater returns to campusThe iconic Alma Mater made a triumphant return to campus in late spring 2014 following a 20-month restoration that included replacing more than 1,000 bolts, cleaning the exterior surfaces using a laser, and returning the original bronze finish. The sculpture, unveiled in 1929, was created by alumnus Lorado Taft. Originally located south of Foellinger Auditorium, the Alma Mater was relocated to the Wright and Green Streets location in 1962. An ongoing maintenance program that includes the application of a wax compound every two years is expected to allow the Alma Mater to welcome students and visitors to campus for decades to come.

Transforming undergraduate education Jeffrey Moore was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute professor, a distinction that honors researchers who are transforming education within their fields by making science more engaging for undergraduates. Moore’s teaching philosophy hinges on student autonomy and curiosity-driven learning in large-enrollment courses. He has been instrumental in course design for organic chemistry, using online resources and webcasts rather than traditional lectures or textbooks as well as web-based conferencing technology.

Marching Illini to showcase moves in NYC 2015The Marching Illini band will spent Thanksgiving 2015 in New York City as one of ten bands chosen to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Besting more than 175 applicants from around the country, the Marching Illini are only the second Big Ten university to march in the parade, which is watched by more than 3.5 million live spectators and an estimated 50 million television viewers. The Marching Illini’s repertoire will be decided when the band’s placement in the parade is determined, and the musicians will stop in Herald Square to perform a special routine. The trip coincides with the 100th anniversary of the campus’ college band program, first directed by A. A. Harding.

The University of Illinois at Chicago is the city’s largest university and a research institution of growing national and international prominence. With the nation’s largest college of medicine and colleges of dentistry, pharmacy, public health, nursing, social work, and applied health sciences, UIC is the state’s principal educator of health professionals. In every college, UIC faculty, students, and staff work with neighborhood, foundation, and government partners on a wide range of projects to improve the quality of life in metropolitan areas around the world. By emphasizing practical research along with a commitment to students who reflect the diversity of the United States, UIC sets a high standard for the dynamic, vibrant, and engaged 21st century urban university.

Hull-House Museum explores the right to play

UIC’s Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is hosting a year-long, multimedia exhibit on the sociopolitical aspects of play. “Unfinished Business: The Right to Play” explores the social movements that led to public playgrounds, the eight-hour workday, and the principle that time off from work enables a more compassionate,

creative, and peaceful world. The exhibition features labor songs re-interpreted by diverse Chicago musicians, an animation about freedom and time created by incarcerated artists, and an interactive swing and hopscotch court. The museum is located a few blocks from both Haymarket Square and Chicago’s first public playground that opened in 1895. Admission to the exhibit, which closes in May 2015, is free.

Do you look your age?A new website co-developed by UIC professor of epidemiology S. Jay Olshansky and University of North Carolina Wilmington collaborator Karl Ricanek tells users how old their faces look relative to other people their age. The “facial analytics” found in FaceMyAge™ eliminates personal judgment, automates the process of facial comparison for age, and establishes the scientifically verified “age” of a face. A large database of images was needed for the website. When the Olshansky and Ricanek project was featured in a July 2014 edition of the Washington Post, they received more than 200,000 images in two weeks, ten times their goal.

Lifting the “fog of complexity”Physicists have identified the “quantum glue” that underlies a promising type of superconductivity, a crucial step towards the creation of energy superhighways that could conduct electricity without current loss. Newer unconventional superconductors function at slightly elevated temperatures

and seemed to work differently from earlier materials operating near absolute zero. UIC theoretical physicist Dirk Morr, who collaborated with researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cornell University, believes the team now has an excellent starting

point to explore how superconductivity works in other complex material, and a chance to investigate how the system might need to be tweaked to raise the critical temperature, ideally all the way up to ambient temperature.

The University of Illinois at Springfield emphasizes a strong liberal arts core and a broad engagement in public affairs issues of the day. Students and faculty conduct research and public service projects in the living laboratory that is the Illinois state capital to improve regional, state, national, and global communities. The diverse student body, comprised of traditional, non-traditional, and international students, thrives in a friendly learning environment that offers substantial student-faculty interaction. The campus offers more than 40 degree-granting programs and is a recognized leader in online education. Students may also attend classes at UIS’ Peoria Center.

Girl Tech = Girl empowermentSpringfield area girls spent two days exploring technology during the 2104 Summer Technology Camp held on the UIS campus. The students planned, programmed, and personalized a robot, which each took home at the end of

the camp. They also used green-screen technology and iPads to visit distant lands, developed a computer game, and created a custom t-shirt using image manipulation software. Girl Tech is designed to teach middle school students about technology and to encourage studies in computer science.

Celebrating online graduatesUIS’ pre-graduation brunch and celebration for online students each May brings online students from around the country to campus, often for the first time. In 2014, 40 online students from nine states attended the annual event that celebrates graduates and their families. UIS is recognized as a national leader in online education, having received multiple awards for online excellence and achievement. In spring 2014, 1,900 students from 45 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia; 72 counties in Illinois; and 13 foreign countries were enrolled exclusively online at UIS. Approximately two-thirds of all UIS students take at least one class online.
