JUDGE BIOS 2014 DR. BRIAN CARDANY is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Rhode Island where he conducts the Concert Band and URI Alumni Wind Ensemble, directs the athletic bands, and teaches courses in music education. Dr. Cardany is also the Conductor and Music Director for the American Band of Providence, one of the finest adult community bands in New England as well as one of the oldest bands in the country (established in 1837). During the summer, he serves as the Conductor for the South County Chamber Orchestra in Narragansett, RI. Dr. Cardany is an active guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. In addition to regular engagements in New England, he has been invited to guest conduct ensembles in New York, Maryland, Arizona, and California. His scholarly activity includes presentations at the MENC Eastern Division Conference and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and he has served as a Research Associate for several volumes of the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series. Dr. Cardany began his career teaching instrumental music in public schools in Virginia and Maryland. He is the faculty sponsor for the Theta Upsilon chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, Coordinator for the URI Southern New England Honor Band, and conductor of the URI Commencement Band, and he is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the National Band Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the Rhode Island Music Education Association. BRANTLEY T. DOUGLAS III is currently the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. His responsibilities include directing the UCA Bear Marching Band, the Symphonic Band, and the Purple Rage Pep Band. He also teaches courses in music education and technology. His graduate studies were completed at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he earned his Masters and Specialist degrees in Music Education and was on the staff of The Michigan Marching Band. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A native of New Jersey, Mr. Douglas is a graduate of Red Bank Regional High School in Little Silver. He is active as an adjudicator, clinician, and designer for marching units and concert ensembles throughout the United States and has served as the Marching Band Coordinator and Chief Judge for America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Douglas is also a clinician for Pygraphics of Grapevine, Texas where he serves as a technology consultant. He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Pi Kappa Lambda, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. Additionally, Mr. Douglas is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Technology Institute for Music Educators.

JUDGE BIOS 2014

DR. BRIAN CARDANY is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Rhode Island where he conducts the Concert Band and URI Alumni Wind Ensemble, directs the athletic bands, and teaches courses in music education. GUIDELINES * * * PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PARADE OF CHAMPIONS GUIDELINES CAREFULLY * * *

CLASSES There will be five classes of competition at this event. Class size is determined by the total number of wind and percussion members; Drum Majors, Color Guard, Banner Holders, etc., are excluded from this count. ADJUDICATION Our contest features a panel of nationally recognized adjudicators from across the United States. The Bands of America evaluation format is used, with judges located both in the press box (ensemble) and on the field (individual). All judges will evaluate each band using score sheets and digital recordings. Each director will receive the written and recorded feedback in a post-contest packet provided at their respective awards ceremony. There will not be a judge’s critique at the end of your band’s performance.

Evaluation format: * Visual Performance, Individual 20 pts. * Visual Performance, Ensemble 20 pts. ** Music Performance, Individual 20 pts. ** Music Performance, Ensemble 20 pts. Visual General Effect 20 pts. Music General Effect 40 pts. TOTAL 100 pts.

* The two Visual Performance judges will average their two scores for a total of 20 points. ** The two Music Performance judges will average their two scores for a total of 20 points.

There is no sideline infraction penalty, but it is advisable to keep the majority of the band within the field boundaries. The exceptions would be Drum Majors, Pit Percussion, Soloists and Feature Twirlers. Recap Sheets: Due to physical limitations, we are unable to give complete contest recap sheets at the conclusion of the event. A recap sheet for each class will be included in the post-contest packet. However, a complete contest recap will be compiled and e-mailed to all directors on the Monday following the contest, as well as made available on our website at www.jmu.edu/mrd/poc.shtml AWARD CEREMONIES There will be two awards ceremonies during the event – one mid-day for the Class A & AA participating bands, and one at the conclusion of the contest for the Class AAA, AAAA & AAAAA participating. Prior to each awards ceremony, the JMU Marching Royal Dukes will perform for the participating bands and audience.

Individuals to ACCEPT awards: Drum Majors and/or Auxiliary Captains are invited to receive the awards for their band. An announcement will be made prior to each ceremony (following the last band in the AA/AAAAA class) to notify all

DAVID DUFFY is a native of Collinsville, Virginia. A 1985 graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High School, he attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he studied Bass Trombone Performance and Music Education. He was a proud member of “Virginia’s Finest” and he graduated in 1989, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education.

Mr. Duffy has been the director of bands at Powhatan High School, Nelson County High School, and John D. Bassett Middle School in the Commonwealth of Virginia and at West Johnston High School in North Carolina. He has been the director of WGI finalists in all categories of color guard including, Powhatan High School, Bassett High School, Dominion, the STUDY, and West Johnston High School. His design credits include the Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. His groups have performed BOA finals and have been seen at the Macy’s Parade and the Disney World Christmas Day Parade.

Mr. Duffy is currently an Assistant Band Director at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Texas.

DR. MIKE FANSLER is Director of Bands and conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds at Western Illinois University, where he also teaches graduate wind conducting and literature and undergraduate music education courses. He joined the faculty in 2001 and is currently Professor of Music.

Dr. Fansler received his education from Schenectady County Community College, James Madison University, Syracuse University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has held similar teaching positions at Idaho State University, Mars Hill College (NC), and Sullivan East High School (TN).

Throughout his career, Dr. Fansler has conducted in Australia, Europe, South America and throughout the United States, where has made guest adjudicating and conducting appearances with numerous high school and honor bands. Additionally, under Dr. Fansler’s direction, the Western Illinois Wind Ensemble has performed internationally and been featured multiple times at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference, the College Band Directors National Association’s North Central Conference, and twice at the prestigious Armour Stage in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall.

His professional memberships include the American Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, Illinois Music Educators Association, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Dr. Fansler currently resides in Avon, Il with his wife Abby and three kids, Jordan, Jessie, and Juliet.

STEPHEN HOWARD is a native of Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Howard holds a Bachelor's of Music degree from Radford University in Radford, Virginia where he concentrated in both Instrumental and Vocal Music Education. At Radford, he studied trombone with Dr. Joseph Blaha and Dr. Steven Rice, percussion with Prof. Al Wojtera, voice with Prof. Elizabeth Curtis, and conducting with composer/conductor Prof. Mark D. Camphouse. After graduating, Mr. Howard attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where he earned a Master’s of Music degree concentrating in Instrumental Conducting.

After finishing graduate school, Mr. Howard moved to Austin, Texas to begin work at James Bowie High School as an Associate Director of Bands. Since then, both his wind ensembles and his ourdoor performing ensemble have experienced great success as consistent BOA Regional and Super Regional Finalists. In 2011, the JBHSOPE was the Grand Champion of the BOA Arlington Regional.

Mr. Howard is also Co-Director of Bowie’s Color Guard program, which has grown during his tenure from a small 12 member team to two winter guards consisting of over 50 members. The

Winter Guards most recently competed at the Texas Color Guard Circuit State Championships where the JV team earned the Silver medal in Scholastic JV and the Varsity team was named the Scholastic National A State Champions.

Mr. Howard is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, and is the President of the Texas Color Guard Circuit.

DR. GIFFORD HOWARTH is currently Associate Professor of Percussion at Bloomsburg University located in Bloomsburg, PA. He is also an Instructor of Percussion at Penn State University in State College, PA. His previous teaching duties included teaching at Michigan State University and Nazareth College.

Dr. Howarth received his DMA degree from Michigan State University, his Masters from Kent State University, and his Bachelors degree from Ithaca College. He has presented clinics and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. Additionally, Dr. Howarth has presented at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, The Percussive Arts Society International Convention, several MENC All-State Conferences and PAS Day of Percussion events.

Dr. Howarth is also heavily involved in different competitive marching activities. He is currently a national adjudicator for DCI, WGI, and BOA along with several state wide marching band and indoor percussion circuits. He was on the percussion staff with the DCI ensemble, The Cadets from 1999 to 2006. He was a previous arranger and instructor for WGI world class ensembles, Northcoast Academy and The Project.

Dr. Howarth is a National Yamaha Performing Artist, a Signature Artist for the Vic Firth Company, and a clinician for Remo Percussion and the Zildjian Cymbal Company. He has several works published through Tap Space publications.

IBE SODAWALLA is the Executive Director/CEO and founder of the Legends Performing Arts Association from Kalamazoo MI. This organization sponsors the Legends Drum & Bugle Corps, Legends Percussion, Legends Indoor Ensemble, and Legends All-Star Band, along with programs for youth and events in the West Michigan area. Under his direction, Legends is rapidly becoming a household name in the activity and is a member of the Drum Corps International (DCI) Open Class. He is the Chair for the DCI Open Class Advisory Committee and was selected as the 2009 DCI Open Class Corps Director of the Year with Legends also being named the 2009 and 2012 DCI Open Class Most Improved Corps. Additionally, Ibe serves on the DCI Governance Committee.

Ibe is a composer/arranger through his business Impax Productions, a company that focuses on creative music design and entertainment productions. He is currently the brass arranger for the Legends Drum and Bugle Corps and arranges for a number of high schools and colleges across the country. Ibe maintains an active schedule as an arranger for the Western Michigan University Bronco Marching Band, and is a sought out clinician and adjudicator for various programs/events.

Ibe holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Michigan University, where he studied music education and entrepreneurship. He is currently a graduate student in the MPA program at Western Michigan University with a concentration on Non-Profit Leadership and Administration.
