Dear Parents and Carers, It’s been a fantastic week here at Cal Gully Primary! Wednesday was Athletics Day and we all headed off as early as possible to try to get our activities completed before the heat became unacceptable. I was incredibly impressed with our students. I was on the sprints and can say without a doubt that every child who came through gave their absolute best. Well done and big thanks to Miss Ennor and Mr. McKerrow for their sensational organisation, and to all of the teachers and parents who slathered on the sunscreen and allowed us to have such a great outcome. A super effort all round! Congratulations to all of our students, particularly well done to the

students who were the highest of their age group and hooray for

Gold House who were our winners on the day by the slimmest of

margins.

MISSION At California Gully Primary School we educate students to be lifelong learners and

Last week, we had a CRT come in to take Indonesian on Friday who was quite a familiar face to many. Mrs Wearne was back in the Gully! It was lovely to have her here. Mrs Wearne was a teacher at California Gully for many years and she was very excited to be back. She even found her old stapler with WEARNE written on it. Students in 5/6 W have been skyping a friend in Norway and investigating the Northern Lights and life in that part of the world. There’s been

some stunning art work come out of that work. Pop in and have a look when you get the chance – it’s in their classroom. Congratulations to Mason F. on his very impressive medal from

Regional Athletics.

Enjoy your weekend.

CHICKEN POX We have been notified that we have had a case of chicken pox within the

school. Even if your child has been immunised please be vigilant and be

aware of the signs of chicken pox. The Department of Education has indicated

a child with chicken pox must be excluded from school until the blisters have

dried. This is usually at least 5 days after the rash appears in unimmunised

children, but may be less in previously immunised children.

Skyping with Erika from Norway On 21/11/17 at about 9:00am Grade 5/6 W skyped with Erika in Norway. She lives hour away from Oslo. We have been learning about Antarctic and the Arctic for a while. So Mrs Windridge knew Erika because she was an exchange student from Norway. She told us a little bit about how she keeps warm and how many clothes she has to wear when go-ing outside, and told us why Norway is a great place to live. Erika said we asked some amazing questions like ‘Have you ever been in a blizzard?’ (asked by Charli) and ‘Is there something that marks the Arctic circle?’ (asked by Shelby). She also told us about the aurora borealis (the northern lights). After that we asked if Erika had any questions to ask us. Unfortunately, she did not. Then we waved goodbye and she did too. We all loved talking to her and Erika enjoyed talking to us too. By Keesha Grade 5/6W have also been busy in art creating our own northern lights paintings.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 43 FOOD IS NOT A REWARD Most people give lollies or other sweet things to children as a ‘special treat’ or as a reward for being good. But giving kids these things can set up a lifetime of bad health. If kids receive sweets for being good, they will associate good behaviour with sugary and fatty foods, which have poor nutritional value. It can also give them the idea that these types of foods are more desirable than fresh nutritious foods. Kids need to know that there are everyday foods which provide the nutrition they need to grow and develop; and occasional foods which might contain higher levels of sugar and fat.

What you can do NOW Give your kids a hug when they do well. Listen carefully to your kids for ideas for very special treats

e.g. a visit to the aquarium. Plan a special, nutritious meal together to celebrate an event.

Good Idea!

If you want to give kids something as a reward, keep it simple and inexpensive. Examples are: stickers, some bits and pieces for craft activities, a small joke book.

Top Tip

Inviting a friend around to play or stay the night can be a reward.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!

Food Bank Update:Amy Bolitho has been doing a fantastic job of collecting food for our families from Food Bank. There have been so many delicious offering lately. Because of the popularity of this program we have had a very large amount of people in the kitchen all at once and it is becoming a bit hectic. To help keep things running smoothly, we are implementing a system whereby students cannot collect food for the family unless they provide the form below to Amy or myself each week. The form needs to be signed by an adult in the house giving them permission to take foods. It is expected that students know if there are food that are not appropriate for their family due to allergies etc if they are being given that role. Otherwise, we will expect to see adults only in the kitchen, collecting food. Thanks for your support with this. Also, if there is anyone who is able to help Amy out on Tuesdays after school with handing out the food that would be great. Michelle Griffiths
