MOTHERS’ DAY STALL AND BREAKFAST Thank you to families that made the Mother’s Day stall held on Thursday such a huge

success. A fantastic variety of donations and gifts ensured there would have been many

happy ‘mums’ on Sunday.

A special mention must go to those behind the scenes that organised the stall and also

assisted on the day. Thank you to the parents that assisted with both the frames

and stall.

Friday morning was a great opportunity for families to enjoy a beautifully

prepared breakfast and spend time with loved ones to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Thanks to the many families for their support and to Nicole, Kerryn, CGPS staff

and children that assisted in preparation and at the event.

LONG SERVICE LEAVE - MRS. LINDA WINDRIDGE Mrs. Windridge will be taking Long Service Leave from Friday 18th— Friday 25th May. We

wish Mrs. Windridge an enjoyable break and welcome Mrs. McKerrow into the 4/5 class

for this period.

COLD AND FLU HYGIENE It is that time of year when colds and flu tend to be common around our community. Good

health hygiene practices can greatly reduce the chance you will get the flu or pass it on to

others.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or elbow when you cough or sneeze.

Throw the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you

cough or sneeze.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs can be spread that

way.

Please discuss the above points with your children.

Please discuss the above points with your children.

students of a particular school event or request.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 9 TV CAN BE A FRIEND OR AN ENEMY TV can be a good educator. It can also be a great entertainer and, as every parent knows, it can be a cheap babysitter and provide company for kids if they are on their own. However, the benefits of TV can be cancelled out by the harm that it can do. Many children watch many hours of television each week. This means that they are: sitting passively for long periods of time; snacking as they watch; and exposed to ads for highly-processed foods, often high in fat and sugar.

What you can do NOW Establish good TV habits in your home” limit your child’s

TV viewing to one hour per day on weekdays; avoid having the TV on during daylight hours; and record some shows to watch later and eliminate the ads.

Remove the remote control. At least changing the channels mean getting up and moving.

Have just one TV in the house.

Good Idea!

Plan the week’s viewing ahead of time. Look through the TV guide together and choose suitable pro-grams. When you watch, discuss aspects of the program with your kids.

Top Tip

Avoid having a TV in your child’s rom. Studies show that kids in families who often watch TV during meals eat more of the highly advertised foods like piz-za and salty snacks, and less fresh healthy food.

This “Beanz Meanz” vegetarian recipe is a great way to encourage kids to eat beans.

It is packed full of fibre and high in protein (from kidney beans) as well loads of

vegetables to ensure kids are meeting their daily nutrient requirements - for this

reason beans are often called a vegetarian “meat”.

Ingredients 2 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped

2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 1/2 cup chopped carrot

1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped red capsicum

1 teaspoon ground cumin & chilli powder 800g (1 can) chopped tomatoes

800g (2 cans) red kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1 cup frozen corn kernels

Topping

1/2 cup shredded low fat cheese 1/4 cup chopped chives

Method

Heat oil in large saucepan. Add cumin and chilli

and stir until they become fragrant.

Cook onion until translucent then add garlic.

Add carrot, celery and red capsicum and cook

until they soften slightly.

Add tomatoes with juice and stir in with

vegetables. Bring mixture to boil then reduce

heat and allow to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.

Beans and corn can now be added to chilli

mixture and stir to combine.

Serve 1/2 cup of chilli on top of

wholegrain toast, brown rice or noodles.

Alternatively serve 1 cup by itself and top

with shredded cheese and chopped chives.

“Beanz Meanz” … More Beans Please!

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
