Josh is off enjoying Sydney this week so it's me, Kath, getting to play with the children in After School Care. On Monday night we had lots of fun making pizza muffins or as Jortii pointed out several times, mini pizzas. They were devoured in record time but we managed to send a couple down to the office for Mrs. Cooper and Mr. Frawley. We'll be enjoying the beautiful sunny days and spending some time outside and on Thursday night it'll be movie night as there is no After School Care on Friday because we finish early for the holidays. I hope you all have a great holiday and we'll see you back next term. Cheers, Kath

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and California Gully Primary School is excited to be par ticipating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2019. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

1. READ ALOUD WITH PASSION! When a child is read to by a loved adult, they are hearing the rhythm and flow of the language, building a rich and diverse network of words and seeing a love of reading modelled.

2. KEEP BUYING BOOKS Continue to build up a home library full of adored books. School reading material is designed for teaching the school of reading whereas recreational reading is all important.

3. TALK ABOUT BOOK CHOICES Talk with your child about why they have chose books from their school library, the classroom or the bookstore in order to develop an idea of your child’s read-ing interests.

4. READ THE RAINBOW! Embrace any book or series your child is keen to read, while gently encouraging them to expand their reading horizons. A balance reading diet is the healthiest by far.

5. BRING BOOKS TO LIFE Research author visits via your local bookstores and libraries. Meeting an author helps for a bond between the child and their favourite books as they gain insight into the ‘story behind the story’. These tips are from Megan Daley’s new book ‘Raising Readers: How to nurture a child’s love of books’ - to be release April 2nd 2019

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 44 DIETS CAN BE DANGEROUS Kids should never be placed on a restrictive diet, except for when a doctor recommends it for medical reasons. In such a rare case, the doctor or dietician would supervise the diet. To grow and develop in a healthy way, kids need a variety of foods. If they are active, they use a lot of energy. Whenever they are at school, study or do their homework, they use energy. It is nutritious food that tops up the energy and keeps them going.

What you can do NOW Avoid using the word ‘diet’ to your kids, especially if they

are worried about their weight. Call it ‘healthy eating’, because that’s what it is. Provide plenty of fresh foods for them to enjoy.

Good Idea!

Kids may hear a lot of talk about diets, but it is up to adults to steer clear of that thinking. If children learn early that wholesome nutrition together with physical activity will keep them healthy and well for life, they will be less likely to worry about dieting as teenagers.

Top Tip

A nutritious eating plan is not a restrictive diet. It provides lots of choice and diversity.

HEALTHY EASTER TREATS...

KEEP THE KIDS BUSY

THESE HOLIDAYS

AND CREA TE YOUR

OWN EASTER EGGS:

Boil some eggs and

decorate them with

crayons or food dye.

Place them in a basket

on scrunched up tissue

paper and enjoy!!!

EASTER BUNNY CAKES:

1. Cook 2 carrot cakes. 2. Place one cake onto the bottom half of a large cake

board. This will be the face of the bunny. 3. Cut the remaining cake into bunny ears and a bow tie.

Attach the ears to the top of the face and position the bow tie at the bottom.

4. Instead of icing, use custard, cream cheese or yoghurt dessert and cover the entire surface of the cake.

5. Use sultanas and dried fruit (apricot and apple) to make eyes, nose and whiskers. You can even cover the insides of the ears and the bow tie.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
