Mass Intentions A question regarding the purpose of Mass intentions came to my attention and I thought I might explain the meaning of having a Mass said for a particular individual. What is the intention of the Mass? The intention of the Mass refers to what we are praying that the fruits of the Mass be applied to. Since the Mass is none other than the perpetuation of the Sacrifice of the Cross, the fruits of the Mass are the fruits of the Sacrifice of Christ upon the Cross. Obviously the fruits are most fundamentally our salvation, but most abundantly an infinite “well” of grace. The Mass is the primary font from which we drink of this “well spring” of grace. All the sacraments draw from this well spring for their efficacy of grace in our life. It needs to be stated very clearly that Christ offered Himself upon the cross for the intentions of all and offers all suffi-cient grace for their salvation. Why then a particular intention? Offering the Mass for a partic-ular intention belongs to the authority of the Church to whom Christ has entrusted this infinite well spring of grace. As in the case of indulgences (see C.C.C. # 1471-1479) the Church, “by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints.” Thus, although the Mass is offered for all, we can ask that the merits of Christ and the saints be applied to an individual or group of individuals for a particular intention. I like to use the anal-ogy of a body. If my toe is infected and I am ill and I take medicine to heal my toe, the whole body is helped as well. Thus it is a good and holy thing to ask that the Mass be offered for a particular intention but at the same time the whole of the Mystical Body of Christ benefits. The Mass can be offered for the living and the dead and also for intentions not specific to per-sons such as for peace or justice.

The Great Adventure: A Journey through the Bible - Acts of the Apostles Two years ago I began a bible study based on a DVD series published by Ascension press and presented by Jeff Cavins called The Great Adventure: A Journey through the Bible. The first year was the Bible Timeline which was a 24 session overview of salvation history as presented in the Old and New Testament. The second year was a 24 session journey through the Gospel of St. Matthew. This year I would like to continue the series and with a 20 session journey through the Acts of the Apostles. In the past I have had this on Tuesday night. However we will be having another bible study: Walking with Purpose on Tuesday mornings. Thus, I will move my bible study to Thursday night at 7:00 – 8:30 pm in Wallace Hall. While having par-ticipated in the previous bible studies would be helpful, they are in no way necessary to do this study of the Acts of the Apostles. The cost will be $35 and the first session will be Thursday, October 8th. Registration can be done on our website or you may us a registration form at each of the entrances of the church. In Jesus and Mary,
