Hello OSPB, Did you learn all about Cymbidiums at the last meeting? I thought Brian Monk did a fantastic job with his power-point presentation. He gave us good reasons to grow these beautiful plants. First of all, they are handsome plants; excellent and easy growers with a large number of flowers on a multitude of inflorences’s and they have the extra bonus of being fragrant too. They are warmth tolerant. What exactly does that mean? It means they will not only grow but also bloom in warm conditions. The big standard Cymbidiums must have temperatures below 60 while the warmth tolerant will do just fine with night temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s. They are terrestrial which means they grow in the layer of decomposing organic matter that lies on top of the ground. That makes them humus epiphytes, but some of the pendant species of cymbidiums will grow on trees or lithophytically; which means they grow on rocks. They like to be potted in a coarse, absorbent mix that retains moisture, with excellent drainage, and in a deep plastic pot. This allows long and strong root growth. Don’t overpot. Constant moisture is essential especially during the growing season. NOT WET! A rest period with less water is beneficial to trigger the onset of blooming. They need bright light to flower well; brighter than for Cattleya’s. Vanda light will work nicely. They can tolerate full sun for short periods of time, but bright, dappled light is best. The brighter the light the more bloom spikes and flowers you will get. When growing in very bright light they may require more water and more fertilizer. Good light results in a more compact growing plant. Brian uses calcium/magnesium fertilizer and also to build next year’s flowers, which need nitrogen, he supplements with Peters 10-10-10. I took a lot of notes and I plan to have more blooming success with my Cymbidiums in the near future.

The November 10th meeting will feature one of our favorite speakers. Thanh Nguyen, from Springwater Orchids in Melbourne, will be speaking about my most favorite orchid, the magnificent Cattleya. Thanh came to this country from Viet Nam after the war, learned English and went to college. He has a real job working at the Kennedy Space Center as an engineer for the Defense Department. He has been growing orchids for over 25 years. His favorite orchid is the Paphaeopedlium. He has done extensive breeding and hybridizing, creating many new and beautiful crosses. He is passionate about his orchids and although he was not initially interested in giving talks and doing programs, he believes it is the only way to keep the hobby growing and getting more and younger people involved.

He says when we (those of us who have been doing it a long time) die off, who will take over in our place? He wants to reach as many people as possible and “light the spark” so to speak. You will enjoy Thanh’s program. He will have plants available for sale, so don’t forget your checkbook. Bring a friend…light the spark. C. mossiae x Blc. Brandywine

Note from Charline Nakamura….. Winter Workshop

High – Low Thermometers Your growing area and yard has more than one micro-climate. The best way to learn about your special environment is to use this special thermometer. Ideally you need 2 or 3 of them. This way you know the difference between 2 or 3 areas at the same time. Usually it is 5 degrees warmer under a tree or next to the house for example. The thermometer will register the highest temperature and the lowest. You re-set it to get the next reading. Check on the internet. The Taylor brand is excellent--- and expensive. Ace Hardware has another model for less. Check different areas of your yard. Hint, hint….ask Santa to bring you one (or two). *** Note from editor Ace has the Taylor brand on sale this weekend for $24.95.

The Delray Beach Orchid Society Show is going on this weekend in the gymnasium at the Old School Square in downtown Delray. It’s a nice little show and very well done. It’s a chance to spend some money on a few, new babies to add to your collection. Have fun if you go. I think that about covers it for this month. I hope to see everyone at the Mounts Fall Sale next weekend and at the meeting Thursday, November 10th. This is the busy time of the year coming up. Lots to do and many shows to attend. Enjoy!
