    Major ActivitiesRELIEF TO THE HOMELESS

    DAIRY & ANIMAL HUSBANDRY EDUCATION

Even the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) admitsthat at least 1 per cent of the citys population in Delhiis homeless. This means that no fewer than 140,000people live on the streets of Delhi. This figure doesnot include those who sleep in carts or rickshaws orunder flimsy plastic-sheet roofs. This year, about 70deaths were attributed to severe winter cold, amarked improvement over previous years. Thoughthe ultimate goal of the National Policy on Housing

and Habitat, 1998, to provide the basic need ofshelter for all, but until such objective is achieved, it isnecessary to provide some kind of shelter to theabsolutely shelter less urban poor, particularly streetchildren, destitute women and migrant laborers, etc.The Society undertook drives to feed hungry streetchildren and elderly persons, and distribute blanketsto the homeless. Society office bearers Mr. SobhanSinha, Mr. Murali Srinivas and Mr. ManabChakraborty took active part in distributing food and

blankets to the poor in the slums of Gurgaon.

The Society has been working with 4 GramPanchayats in Dehradun District ofUttarakhand. Our members have providedadvice to the villagers on better animalhusbandry, improving livestock breed andhealth. Mr. Anil Tyagi of the Society hasobserved that the villagers are selling their

milk through middlemen. The middlemencollect pure milk at cheap rates (Rs. 9-10/litre) and sell it at much higher prices (Rs.18-22/litre). Meetings were organized on 9November 2008 and 18 January 2009 todiscuss with the villagers on how to providebetter price of milk to the producer, andensure quality milk and milk products toconsumers.

Major ActivitiesPnP UNITUS ULTRA POOR PROJECT

The lives of ultra poor are characterized by irregular income, persistenthunger, poor health, and illiteracy. The ultra poor lack the ability andconfidence to join mainstream microfinance, and require economic, healthand social development inputs to create sustainable change in their lives.

The PnP Unitus Ultra Poor Project is aimed at providing marginal workers,

particularly those in building & construction work basic health services, jobplacement and registration in government run social assistanceprogrammes. We aim to graduate 1000 poor persons into non poor statuswithin one year. This project is grant funded by Unitus Inc. USA.

Families living in the slums are primarily part of the unorganized sector(labor, lime kilns, recycling, vending on carts).Major pharmaceuticals, autocomponents, food processing, herbs, aromatic and real estate companies

have established their presence in these two cities which has boosteddemand for skilled workforce.

Dehradun and Haridwar provides being environment for up scalingemployment of ultra poor. As there are no agency providing support to ultrapoor in transforming the lives of ultra poor in these cities, PnP Unitus UltraPoor Program is in a unique position to fill this void.
