Automation & Productivity improvements are the key focus at this year’s PMG Conference Isn’t it time you full got to grips with the concept of ‘Industry 4.0’ and what it fully means to you and your business? (Industry 4.0, or smart technology, refers to the fourth industrial revolution which is centered around intelligent manufacturing. It brings together contemporary automation, data exchange and new manufacturing technologies). Well now here’s your chance at this year’s PMG Conference which is being

held during the afternoon of Thursday 14th July at the Plymouth Future Inn, Derriford.

According to Boston Consulting Group global spending on industrial robots is currently surging from now

until 2025. But there is so much more to this topic than the introduction of collaborative robots (or so-called ‘cobots’ alone). 40% of manufacturers believe that smart manufacturing and its foundational technology—the Internet of Things (IoT)— are within reach and that now is the right time to invest.1 The projections for IoT impact are staggering. Analysts say the global economic impact may

reach $19 trillion by 2030.2 And as many as 50 billion devices will be connected collecting and communicating data, causing automated responses.3 You’ll see that, as with last year’s Employee Engagement event, we’re aiming to achieve a balance between celebrating the best of what’s already happening locally amongst our membership and inviting a number of top speakers who are joining us from across the Country including experts in their field such as Alan Norbury, Central Technology Officer at Siemens UK plc and Jon Meyer, Head of Additive Manufacturing at Airbus Group Innovations plus a number of others. Draft programme - here In addition to the Conference, there will also be an exhibition featuring the latest in robotics & automation and data analytics tools. Meet Baxter (opposite) the award-winning research robot which is being exhibited by Plymouth University at the Conference. This event is exclusively for PMG members only and will particularly suit MD’s and other members of your senior management team plus Process Managers and Production Managers and anyone the slightest bit techie! Lunch, networking and visit our exhibition from 12:00 noon onwards.

UK manufacturing remained subdued in May - The UK manufacturing sector maintained its generally lacklustre start to 2016. At 50.1 in May, up from 49.4 in April, the seasonally adjusted Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index® (PMI®) edged only negligibly back above the neutral mark of 50.0. Production volumes were broadly unchanged during the latest survey month, as the growth rate of new order inflows remained subdued (albeit slightly quicker than in April). Where an increase in new business was registered, this generally reflected a further increase in new work from domestic clients. In contrast, the level of new export business fell for the fifth consecutive month. Where weakness in new order inflows was reported, manufacturers linked this to softer global economic growth, challenging exchange rates and ongoing client and market uncertainties. The latter partly reflected the forthcoming EU referendum. Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI® - June 2016 Update. More - here

Business Secretary claims an Industrial Strategy ‘of deeds, not words’ 1. Does the Government have an industrial strategy or not? That

may seem like a simple enough question but it is one that causes some difference of opinion. According to the Business Secretary Sajid Javid, we already have one. He said, ‘You can argue about what it should contain, what it should seek to achieve. But you can’t deny that it exists. My department has had a fully functioning industrial strategy for several years now’. He said this in response to comments made in Sheffield in the heart of the northern powerhouse by Richard Edwards, who is set to be the next Master Cutler (an ambassadorial title for Industry dating back to a time when the Mayflower was about to set sail from Plymouth) who had urged the Business Secretary to develop a ‘clear industrial strategy’ claiming the recent crisis in the steel industry had proved again that it was necessary. Mr Javid said that ‘Britain’s business leaders deserve a strategy as wide-ranging as the economy you serve so well. A strategy of deeds, not words. And that’s exactly what you’re getting from this government’. Full speech - here press coverage - here

New White Paper to shake up Higher Education, Innovation and Research 2. The Government has published its 2016 HE White Paper, entitled Success as a

Manuplas Limited to exhibit at Seawork International 2016 3. Plymouth-based Manuplas Limited will be exhibiting its range

of marine buoys and fendering products for the marine and offshore energy markets at Seawork International 2016. Among the products on display will be the company’s innovative modular bow fendering systems designed for mounting on wind farm support vessels. As well as fendering solutions for protecting the sides and bows of commercial vessels such as workboats, wind farm service vessels, pilot boats, life boats and patrol boats. Manufactured from cross-linked polyethylene foam with either a cast or spray applied non-marking polyurethane elastomer skin, Manuplas modular bow fendering systems aim to be easy and cost effective to replace if sections become worn or damaged. The bow fenders are lighter than traditional rubber D fendering and which aims to improve both speed and fuel consumption of vessels. To optimise safety for the crew when the vessel is against a wind turbine, the fenders structure generates a high level of energy absorption and grip. As well as offering an extensive range of standard fender profiles, Manuplas create custom fender shapes in-house to fit any specification. Manuplas also offers a range of buoys including mooring buoys, navigation buoys, chain support buoys and modular buoys. More - here

MGB Engineering secures financial support 4. Plymouth-based MGB Engineering, which provides engineering services to

safety critical industries, has secured £500,000 to support its work with Network Rail. The company has been backed by crowdlender ArchOver based on previously secured contracts and its potential to secure more when Network Rail Control Period 5 Delivery Plan (CP5) begins later this year. It follows MGB's decision to find a new funding partner through commercial finance broker Balance for Business. Angus Dent, chief executive at ArchOver, said: "MGB has contracts agreed and has invested heavily in high quality people, processes and machinery which presented a very attractive proposition for our investors. We're very pleased that crowdlending will provide MGB with the financial flexibility and support it needs to deliver its growth plan." Dave Ottley, managing director at Balance for Business, added: "Clearly the banking landscape has changed dramatically since MGB set up as a business. This change has been positive with the introduction of new funders who are geared up to support ambitious companies such as MGB. With an established relationship in place, I knew ArchOver was a great fit for my client." Alongside its rail sector business, MGB also designs and manufactures equipment for the marine and petro-chemical industries. (Pictured: Stuart Calvert (left),

PMG Members collaborate in training first

5. Four Plymouth manufacturers have joined forces in a ground-breaking staff training collaboration aimed at improving efficiency and reducing waste. Metalwork engineers Alderman Tooling teamed up with Plympton neighbours MGB Engineering and Vortok International and Lee Mill-based Permaban to send 29 staff on the Level 2 Certificate in Business Improvement Techniques Lean training course. The collaboration is a first for training provider Lean Education and Development (LEAD). LEAD Kaizen Coach Steve Grigg says: “It’s been a real departure for LEAD and, although logistics were a challenge to start with, running a course for multiple companies means smaller firms can get involved without losing too many staff to a programme.” The idea to collaborate on training came from Aldermans’ managing director Karen Friendship. “Working together on this training course has been particularly special. Our staff have not just learnt about continuous improvement, problem-solving and workplace organisation, but they’ve benefitted from the knowledge and experiences of their colleagues in the other companies and they’ve forged lasting friendships.” Full story - here

35M wins World Superyacht Award 7. The Princess 35M Antheya III has won a World

Superyacht Award in the Semi-Displacement & Planing Two Deck Motor Yacht category at Boat International's prestigious 2016 event that took place in Florence in May. The success of the Princess 35M, launched last September at the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show, follows in the footsteps of the first Princess 40M Imperial Princess that won the World Superyacht Award in 2013 in the Three Deck Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts category. This latest accolade further strengthens the brand's position in the superyacht sector and celebrates the outstanding design, innovation and craftsmanship afforded by the Plymouth Shipyard and the in-house Princess Design Studio. Boat International said: "The judges particularly admired her exterior design, which incorporated a variety of functional areas in which to relax and dine, as well as her contemporary yet ageless interior. Additionally, the judges found a high quality of construction and excellent technical, service and crew areas. A well balanced yacht indeed." Princess Yachts continue to grow the M Class superyacht range having successfully launched the 30M at boot Düsseldorf earlier this year, further establishing themselves in the superyacht category. PCH Manufacturing sign up to the ‘I Love Life’ programme 2016 8. (As appeared in Plymouth Herald – 28th May) A

team of eight colleagues are taking on the challenge of the lifetime - to change the way they live their lives by eating healthy food, exercising, getting out and about and cutting back on booze. The close-knit group all work together at PCH Manufacturing and have signed up to be part of the I Love Life programme 2016 - a campaign led by The Herald to make Plymouth a healthier and happier place to live. Over the next eight weeks the group will make positive changes to their diet, exercise and wellbeing by attending seminars provided by Livewell Southwest and attending exercises classes at YMCA Plymouth. PCH Head of Manufacturing, Louise Turner, said: "The wellbeing of our staff is very important to us, and this is particularly important in a manufacturing environment with lots of physical work and pressure to create top quality products to deadlines. Taking part in I Love Life gives the PCH Manufacturing team a chance to improve their own health and wellbeing and be an example to others. Our staff are real characters and I think people will enjoy reading about their health journeys – I wish them the best of luck in facing the challenge!" This year Livewell Southwest are partnering with YMCA Plymouth. The organisation is providing facilities for participants to train and take seminars in, as well as offering extra classes during the week, free gym membership for a year, and the services of YMCA fitness manager Neil Talbot. Rittal's Heavy Current Busbar Systems Approved for use on Board Ships 9. The safe use of electrical equipment on board ships brings with it particular

challenges. It’s an area that Rittal continues to invest in, not least to ensure its systems function effectively under the test conditions which are required by the marine industry. Now, the efficacy of its busbar systems RiLine, Maxi-PLS and Flat-PLS has been recognised by leading international shipping organisations. Approvals for on board use have been granted by Lloyds Register (LR), Germanischer Lloyd (GL), Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This follows the announcement last year that Maxi-PLS and Flat-PLS had successfully passed the environmental test on “Vibration”, satisfying the requirement of 0.7 g in the frequency range 5 – 100 Hz. As such, these busbar systems and related components now have the required test data and documentation for: short circuit, temperature rise, dielectric strength, thermal resistance, use under vibration conditions. RiLine, Maxi-PLS and Flat-PLS can be used on board ships in designated sealed areas, such as engine rooms, subject to observance of the required technical characteristics and the valid technical regulations. Design-type approvals will also mean use of the busbar components in maritime applications is now much easier. The campaign, which runs from June to September, is in the spirit of Burts’ “Do it Right” philosophy that encourages consumers to make the best choices in life – whether about their friends, family, work – or what they put in their sandwiches. Dean, the resident chef on ITV morning show Lorraine and like Burts, born and bred in the South West, will create eight different sandwich combinations as Burts’ brand ambassador, using flavours from the range and a selection of ingredients sourced from the South West wherever possible. The eight “ultimate crisp sandwich” flavours are: Sea Salt; Vintage Cheddar & Spring Onion; Thai Sweet Chilli; Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar; Devon Roast Beef; Sea Salt & Crushed Peppercorns; Spicy Chorizo and Firecracker Lobster.

International celebration marks official opening of new engineering headquarters 11. One of Plymouth’s leading manufacturers is celebrating

the official opening of its new headquarters. Guests from around the world joined staff at Applied Automation (UK) Ltd for a reception and open day at the new factory in Plympton. Champagne corks were popping at the event with customers and suppliers from the USA, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and all around the UK. Visitors were taken on a tour of the factory and shown bespoke automated machinery and yacht helm consoles built by the firm’s marine division. An area of the factory was transformed into a mini exhibition space with displays of products that are sold by the distribution division, X-STK, including demos of industrial robots. Suppliers also set up stands, showcasing their latest products to guests. VIPs from key partners unveiled a plaque at the engineering centre, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion. Applied Automation moved into the new factory last year after an extensive refurbishment of the building. The site is 140,000 square feet and more than double the combined size of the two factories previously occupied by the company. Also see - here

EuroTech Group plc The EuroTech Group plc is proud to announce that its UK manufacturing facility has been awarded AS9100C certification for the manufacture of printed circuit boards. AS9100C is a standardised quality management system for the aerospace industry. The accreditation recognises excellence in operational practices and quality management, and reflects EuroTech’s commitment to quality, safety and reliability. Not only does certification open EuroTech’s services to new markets, but it also gives existing customers further reassurance of the quality of EuroTech’s internal processes. EuroTech’s AS9100C certification comes in the midst of a £1m investment programme at the company, aiming to further improve the company’s technical capabilities and efficiency. The two-year programme focuses on fine-line and thin core technology and will enable the company to increase the number of layers in a multilayer PCB. This development will enable EuroTech to manufacture increasingly complex and dense boards in a market which is constantly miniaturising. The first stage of the plan was implemented January 2016 with a £250,000 investment in a new thin core inner-layer processing facility. “We are constantly looking for opportunities to improve because we know that our customers need the best possible product, manufactured to the highest standard,” commented Managing Director, David Douglas. “AS9100C is just another step towards the ultimate goal: giving our customers the advantage in a competitive sector.” The EuroTech Group plc is based in Exmouth, Devon, and provides both onshore and offshore PCB manufacturing services as well as a FastTrack service with lead times from 24 hours. With the capability to produce both low- and high-volume orders, EuroTech caters for a huge variety of customers, from small manufacturers to multi-national blue-chip electronics companies. With nearly 50 years’ experience manufacturing PCBs, the company prides itself on its commitment to high-quality customer service and the talents and tenacity of its highly-skilled workforce. The EuroTech Group plc also includes TWM Technology Ltd, which manufactures precision metal components, and Inverter Fusion Ltd, a manufacturer of high quality inverter welding machines, both of which are located in Honiton, Devon. EuroTech is one of Exmouth’s largest employers, with over 140 employees.

As industries become more and more competitive, EuroTech recognises that its customers require the largest competitive advantage their suppliers can give them. Not only does that mean good prices, but also short lead times, reliability and flexibility. For this reason, The EuroTech Group plc is committed to the principles and practices of lean manufacturing. By training their entire workforce in lean manufacturing – from line operators to accountants to senior managers – the EuroTech Group has become one of the leanest PCB manufacturers in Europe. Through their commitment to lean principles, the company has substantially improved efficiency and streamlined their processes. And with the concept of continuous improvement at the heart of the business, customers and employees alike can be confident that the company will continue to move forward.

Company Insolvencies on the Rise 21. In the first 3 months of this year, company insolvencies

increased for the first time since 2014. In April, UK manufacturing activity contracted for the first time in 3 years. A range of explanations has been offered including weaker domestic demand, low oil prices hitting production and uncertainty created by the EU referendum. In the circumstances, it seems timely to look at one of the remedies that can be available to manufacturers and suppliers in the event of a customer failing to pay for goods. Lawyers, Bond Dickinson have produced a practical guide for manufacturers and suppliers on the subject – see here

Balance for Business 23. If you find that talking to Banks is a “boring” pastime, then you need to talk to

us at Balance for Business for a completely new experience. Founded by Dave Ottley, Balance for Business Limited is a Banking Consultancy / Commercial Finance Broker with the aim of providing a fully independent view on funding to the SME sector. Many businesses feel detached from their existing bankers, are unsure of how to obtain the correct levels of funding and are apprehensive about approaching Banks / Financial institutions. Let us take this strain on your behalf. We know how bank’s work across all sectors, we know their processes, their products and how to navigate through the options to achieve a successful outcome. So what about the cash? Adequate Cashflow is essential for all manufacturing businesses and is traditionally funded by overdraft with supporting security. But there are other options which can unlock your cash simply and often without tangible support. This type of funding can be flexible – • Long term to ensure adequate funds on an ongoing basis. • Short term to get you through a particular order. • Interest Only options to assist with cash flow or structured repayment options available. Many businesses do not review their funding on a regular basis and as the number of funders operating in this sector has dramatically increased, as has the number of different ways to fund manufacturing businesses, now really is the time to take stock & review the most suitable funding options for your business. So if you would like an independent view on available Cashflow options or the more traditional Term Loan, Asset Finance and Commercial Mortgage funding, then please speak to Dave Ottley on 07747 444504 or visit the website www.balanceforbusiness.co.uk for further information and contact details. Mathematics Students looking for short summer internships or 20-week day-release opportunities

24. The “M” in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) covers a wide skillset ranging from optimisation of logistics problems through statistical process control and Big Data analytics. The Mathematics subject group at Plymouth University are keen to find productive ways of engaging with small manufacturers in such areas where they have expertise. One initiative seeks to find either four-week summer internships or 20-week day-release (where the release is from studies) in which students can deliver a carefully chosen small project. Support can be provided as needed from a suitably experienced member of teaching staff. Clearly some discussions will be needed at the outset to ensure that a productive project can be delivered in such a short period of time, which will clearly involve checking that we can offer relevant support if needed. Any employers who are interested are strongly encouraged to contact Dr Paul Hewson [email protected] to find out more. Also see - here.

The benefit for members attending will vary from person to person but it’s likely to include: • Participating in a general discussion around the topic; • Sharing information regarding what steps firms are taking in

mitigation financially as a precaution against ‘Brexit’; • What are firms doing, if anything, to communicate with their own workforce on the subject – how common is it for firms to put forward a corporate stance – even if its non-committal/neutral? • And generally, what is likely to happen to future investment in people’s respective businesses were we to Brexit? • It’s therefore as much about sharing the experiences of individual firms as it is about reaching a PMG-wide position on the topic, which in itself is a matter for debate as to whether we decide to or not. So that we can book breakfast and a room of appropriate size, pl. let me know whether or

VII Consultations, Reviews, Surveys & Calls for Evidence

Highways England - Route Strategy consultation exercise 33. Route strategies for England’s motorways and trunk roads are

prepared by Highways England. These strategies are one of the key steps of research required by the Department for Transport to help the Government develop the next Road Investment Strategy, which covers the period post-2020. The Road Investment Strategy will be the foundation for much of the thinking about where to invest in the strategic road network after 2020. Highways England has recently commenced the process of preparing the second round of Route Strategies, with the objective of publishing them in 2017. We are contacting you now to inform you that the issues and evidence gathering phase of the preparation of these Route Strategies has started and is open for you to get involved. We published our approach to the preparation of the second round of route strategies on 12 April, and we have recently launched an online mapping tool that you or any of our stakeholders and customers can use to inform us about the performance, impact and challenges the strategic road network faces as well as predicted future challenges. This could include congestion on our network, or disruption on local roads as a consequence of the strategic road network; noise issues or persistent technology problems; as well as sending us your ‘Investment Plans’ and ‘Infrastructure Plans’. Route strategies will bring together information from motorists, local communities, construction partners, environmental groups. We will use this information to help us better understand the performance of our roads, shape our investment priorities to encourage economic growth and to improve the service we provide to road users and our neighbours. The strategies will help government decide where investment is most needed to improve the economic prosperity of the country.

Local Business Survey 34. Are you confident for the year ahead? We want to know how the local economy is performing, and

your views are vital to us. After you have completed the survey, you will be entered into a prize draw to win an overnight stay for two at the five star Gainsborough Bath Spa Hotel, or six bottles of wine. We are also keen to find out your views about apprenticeships. After the success of National Apprenticeship Week in March, there is a drive to get more businesses to recruit young people. We want to know about any apprentices you’ve taken on, or what’s potentially stopping you from doing so. I look forward to hearing from you. Phil Smith, Managing Director of Business West. Is the South West a good base for overseas travel?

35. Does being based in the South West enable your company to effectively do business overseas? Or does the region lack critical routes to the destinations you need? To find out Insider has teamed up with Bristol Airport for our new survey examining what the region's businesses need to travel and trade with overseas countries. What airports offer the best destinations? Where are you travelling? And what motivates your travel decisions? The survey should take only a few moments and will help Bristol Airport and Insider understand exactly what needs to be done to make improve the region for those wishing to travel and trade internationally. Thanks for your time. https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SWBusinessTravel
