This year will mark our 35th Anniversary at our current River Road location. Like the decision to relocate here,our plans for 2013 and beyond are bold and innovative - building on the significant growth we achieved in 2012. Asa non-profit community hospital, we continue to invest in new equipment, programs and services to better serve youand your family.

Our new partnership with the Hackensack University Health Network will continue to grow and expand. Thisjoint venture has strengthened our Neonatal Unit. With a Level 2 Nursery as part of our maternity services, we canaddress more complex cases. Additional clinical affiliations established this year with Hackensack include vascular,thoracic, and neurological surgery.

The PMC Residency Program was expanded to include Internal Medicine. In July 2013, we are starting programsin Family Medicine and Dermatology. We will have 68 residents in our programs out of which 59 will be assigned toPMC. We are awaiting approval of programs in Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Caring for children has always been a priority at PMC. In the past year we experienced a record number of birthsand our inpatient and outpatient services for children continue to grow. At the end of March we celebrated the opening of our new Pediatric Unit with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The floor to ceiling renovation includes new pedi-atric patient rooms, bathrooms, a play area and a nurses station. This will allow us to better care for the increasing number of children we serve.

Our work to update and transform all patient rooms has started. Construction will continue on a room-to-room,floor-by-floor basis to reduce the inconvenience to patients. Once completed, we will have fully renovated patientrooms that optimize comfort, safety and care.

We remain focused on achieving the highest level of quality and patient satisfaction scores. Considerable effortis made by all of our employees to provide patients with care that is recognized for both excellence and compassion.This issue of “PMC Pulse” includes our Honor Roll of Donors. Each gift has its own meaning and story.

On December 1, 2012, the Palisades Medical Center Foundation presented its prestigious Star Stream Awards to Thomas M. Eastwick,President of Eastwick College and the HoHoKus Schools, and MohamedLateef, MD, Distinguished Physician Leader, for their tireless work in supporting the health and well being of residents throughout Hudson andsouthern Bergen Counties.

The awards were presented to Eastwick and Lateef during the PalisadesMedical Center Foundation’s 2012 Star Stream Ball. This year’s formal eventeclipsed all of the Palisades Medical Center Foundation’s previous fundrais-ing records, and generated more than $385,000 to support the expansionand renovation of Palisades’ inpatient Pediatric Unit.

“We are delighted that so many of our friends and supporters cametogether to recognize Tom and Dr. Lateef for their years of extraordinaryservice and support for Palisades and our community,” said Bruce J.Markowitz, President and CEO of Palisades Medical Center.

Here at Palisades Medical Center(PMC), Hurricane Sandy’s storm surgehad effects that were much greater andmore complex than we expected. Althougheveryone at PMC was well prepared for thestorm, we did not anticipate the loss offour emergency generators and the extentof flooding on the first floor.

During the week prior, our staff active-ly planned, established and staffed aCommand Post for use before, during andafter the storm.

When power was lost at the height ofHurricane Sandy, we were faced with avery difficult situation and decided to evac-

uate the hospital patients as well as thosefrom the Harborage ventilator unit. A verywell-coordinated effort took place and thepatients were transferred to HackensackUniversity Medical Center.

By the morning of October 31, powerwas restored from PSE&G and our backupgenerators were also functional. Later thatevening, less than 24 hours after the storm,our patients returned. Despite the enor-mous challenges, PMC was open to serve

our community.There are many stories of sacrifice,

dedication, brave and laudable actions bymany of our employees. The events surrounding Sandy provided a great measure of their character and spirit. Theyhave proven once again, the ability to comethrough, every day and in our greatest timeof need.

Patients that had been transferred toHackensack University Medical Centerduring Hurricane Sandy were transferredback to PMC for continuation of theircare.

The patient transfer process and facili-ty evacuation was safely and effectivelycompleted as a result of the collaborativeplanning and efforts of PMC’s MedicalStaff and employees, Hudson CountyOffice of Emergency Management, localpolice, fire and rescue personnel, NorthBergen Mayor Nicholas J. Sacco, andHackensack University Medical Center.Employees from every department at PMCworked tirelessly through two days toensure the safety and well being ofpatients.

We are very appreciative of the consid-eration, commitment and responsivenessdemonstrated by our public officials, firstresponders, and employees at PMC. Weare grateful for their dedication under dif-ficult circumstances and inspired by theirefforts to serve our communities.

The world’s fastest race cars competing in one of the most popularsports in the world will come to our area inJune of 2014. Formula One WorldChampionship Racing will hold a GrandPrix race on a course that winds along theHudson County waterfront with spectacu-lar views of Manhattan in the background.

The Palisades Medical CenterFoundation hosted a breakfast inNovember for local businesses and com-munity members to learn more about theplans for this major event.

The featured speaker was DennisRobinson, Chief Operating Officer of GPAmerica, the organization hosting andmanaging the upcoming race.

Robinson, who previously served asPresident and CEO of the MeadowlandsSports Complex, discussed the significanteconomic impact that Formula One Grand

Prix events have on the host locations.More than 100,000 people from aroundthe world are expected to attend the racefilling hotels, restaurants and patronizinglocal businesses over several days of raceactivities.

An event viewed around the globe,Formula One, delivers the highest incomesports indices on television. Robinson

pointed out that Leo Hindery, the race’slead organizer and founder and formerhead of the YES television network, select-ed this course because of its unique appealto Formula One’s estimate half a billionfans around the world.

North Bergen Mayor Nicholas J. Sacco helped lead aribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening ofPalisades Child Care Center’s new, expanded location at7701 Marine Road, adjacent to the Medical Center.

Previously located in Edgewater, the Palisades ChildCare Center, affiliated with Palisades Medical Centerfirst opened its doors in 1984.

The new, state-of-the-art child care facility features:

• Larger classrooms equipped with new computers.• An indoor activity center.• Two (2) age-appropriate playgrounds.• Web camera viewing for parents.

Still Growing Strong.In the face of the ever‐changing healthcare industry, long‐time members of the PMC family share their reflections on 35 years of a commitment to care on the waterfront

In 1978 a group of dedicated boardmembers and community volunteers pro-vided the leadership in moving NorthHudson Hospital to a waterfront locationrenaming it Palisades General Hospital.Now, 35 years later, Palisades MedicalCenter continues to serve the communityas its founders had envisioned. Like thedynamic community that now surroundsit, PMC has become a vibrant and growinghealthcare provider attracting leadingphysicians and offering the highest qualitycare for patients.

Arthur E. ImperatoreOne of the leading proponents of the

move to the River Road address was ArthurE. Imperatore. Born in West New York in1925, Arthur has been a successful busi-nessman in several industries and is bestknown today as the founder and presidentof NY Waterway. Both the illness of hisbrother and his experience building APATransport Corp into one of the country’sleading trucking firms influenced his conviction to build a hospital on the waterfront.

In the early 1950’s when his brotherwas seriously ill Arthur managed his care ata leading New York Hospital. Although theexcellent care provided at the time couldnot prevent the loss of his brother, Arthurwas left with a lasting impression about thequalities of an outstanding hospital.

He wanted the same advanced medicalservices for the people of Hudson Countyand the more than 1,000 employees wholater worked for his trucking company.This was his motivation when he laterserved on the board and as it chair in 1977. Arthur was steadfast that building anew hospital was instrumental to its futuresuccess.

“We looked at 26 different sites,”Arthur recalls. “Using the knowledge Igained in the trucking industry I reviewedthe locations for the level of access eachwould provide for patients traveling in ourheavily congested region. I also felt that thenorthern Hudson County location weselected would be attractive to doctors and

patients from Bergen County, while continuing to serve our Hudson County-based patients.”

“I remember some of the challenges inthe early construction process. Soil analysisand concerns about the tide from theHudson River had to be addressed. Whenthe hospital opened in September we areall pleased with the decision. It was truly ateam effort lead by a group of devoted vol-unteers.”

Arthur continued to make a lastingimprint on the waterfront when he openedNY Waterway in 1986 providing conven-ient ferry service between Weehawken andManhattan. Still active in the day to dayoperations of his ferry service, Arthur also



she has been a part of the PMC Laboratorysince its first day on the waterfront. Shetakes pride in knowing that she has seenthe Lab continually evolve over the years.

“At North Hudson Hospital, there wassimply no room to grow,” said Phyllis.“The building was maxed out and we hadseveral departments located in housesalong the side streets next to the hospital,including our Lab. I remember carryingmy basket to-and-from the hospital in therain and snow to draw blood and then dotesting next door. We were all thrilled tocome to PMC’s new location on RiverRoad. Everything was state-of-the art atthe time. My favorite thing was the TubeSystem that enabled us to send lab resultsto all five floors – much like a drive-thru ata bank. It was before desktop computers sowe thought it was the coolest thing at thetime.”

Phyllis also credits the Laboratory’sphilosophy to “embrace change” as a keyreason she has enjoyed a long career atPMC.

“My job has always been fresh andexciting for me because I have done every-

thing from Microbiology to IT,” saidPhyllis. “Our Lab has also stayed on thecutting-edge and it is a place where changeis always welcome.”

Most importantly, Phyllis has a specialplace in her heart for the many employeesshe has worked alongside over the years.

“A long time ago, people would say tome, ‘Oh, it’s like a family at Palisades,’”said Phyllis. “Back then, I just didn’t get itwhen I was younger, but now I do. OurLab team has always been a tight-knitgroup. We all care for each other and wemake sure that we always celebrate eachperson’s birthday with a cake. It’s a lot ofcake to eat in a year, but it’s always worthit. I would never want to work anywhereelse.”

Ana JimenezAna Jimenez began working at the old

North Hudson Hospital in 1974 at theInformation Desk. Today, she is a MaternalHealth Child Associate in PMC’sMaternity Center. She is one of the staff atPMC who remembers the move the PMC’s

remains connected to PMC as one of its strongest advocates and leading benefactors.

Tessie Leyva, RNTessie Leyva, RN, is well-recognized as

the most-experienced nurse on PMC’s 3rdfloor. She has been a nurse for 41 years,working at North Hudson Hospital for sixyears and for the past 35 years at PMC.She recalls the many emotions that she feltwhen the hospital was moved to its water-front location.

“Before we made the move, many ofthe nurses at that time were given a tour ofthe new site right before constructionbegan,” said Tessie. “I remember thinking,‘Why in the world would they want to dothis because this place looks like a swamp?’But now I realize that it was a great moveto a perfect area to serve our growing com-munities.”

One of Tessie’s fondest PMC memo-ries came on her first day after helpingambulances transport ICU and CCUpatients to the new location

“When I first stepped into the newPMC, I was so impressed with how largeand new all of the facilities were,” saidTessie. “There were even private rooms forpatients, which was a huge change becauseNorth Hudson was so small.”

Looking back, Tessie is amazed at howpatient care has evolved in her time atPMC.

“The biggest changes I have seen areall of the advancements in technology,including electronic medical records,” saidTessie. “We’ve also added many profession-al staff to the floors. All of this has helpedus provide better care for our patients eachand every day.”

waterfront location in 1978.“It’s amazing to me that it has already

been 35 years here along the waterfront,”said Ana. “I’ll never forget driving my littleVolkswagen up-and-down the hill to bringfiles, boxes and supplies to our new loca-tion. I remember I even had some largeritems sticking out of the windows and thetop of my car. It was an awesome experi-ence. Our whole team had a lot of fun.”

As Ana reflects on her years at PMC,she is still amazed by the growth of theMedical Center and the communitiesalong the waterfront.

“I remember watching (PMC’s)Pavilion Building and The Harborage getbuilt from scratch. When we made themove, all of us expected the hospital togrow, but we never expected such a hugegrowth to happen so quickly to the entirearea. In our early years here, we only hadone Unit Secretary in Maternity fromMonday though Friday. Now, there areUnit Secretaries for every unit, floor andshift.”

Ana and the Maternity Departmentstill keep one memento from the oldNorth Hudson Hospital – a small footstoolthat is still kept in the nurses’ station.

“I still use the footstool everyday toreach files on some of the higher shelves. Idon’t think we will ever trade it in for anew one – it is like a piece of our history.”

Jaime N. Gildengers, MDJaime N. Gildengers, MD, has been a

well-respected surgeon on the PMCMedical Staff since it first opened its doorsin 1978. He has served as the Chairman ofPMC’s Department of Surgery, and he isone of the few remaining physicians on thePMC Medical Staff that also practiced forseveral years at North Hudson Hospitalbefore the move was made to the HudsonRiver waterfront.

“It was a dream that became a realitywhen we opened the new location,” saidDr. Gildengers. “The change was very big– the difference between the two hospitalswas light-years apart. North HudsonHospital was an old building and we had20 to 30 patients in open wards. I’ll alsonever forget how slow and cranky the ele-vator was. The new Palisades hospital wasstate-of-the art and it had many semi-pri-vate rooms. The patients, the staff and the

community were all very excited about thechange.”

Dr. Gildengers fondly recalls seeingthe hospital and its surrounding communi-ties grow during the past 35 years. He hasplayed a key role in PMC’s continualexpansion in clinical services and he servedon the planning committee that helpeddevelop The Harborage nursing home andrehabilitation center in 1991.

He also helped plan the developmentof PMC’s Same Day Surgery Unit. Thanksto Dr. Gildengers’ leadership, constructionon the unit featured a corridor to directlyconnect it to the hospital building toensure safe and efficient transport ofpatients. In fact, some staff and volunteersaffectionately refer to the area as‘Gildengers’ Corridor.’

“Palisades will always be my secondhome,” said Dr. Gildengers. “Our commu-nity has always taken great pride in supporting Palisades and the Medical Staffcontinues to grow because many doctorscome from other hospitals and they recognize right away that Palisades is thebest hospital in Hudson County.”

Ana Jimenez, Tessie Leyva and Phyllis Mink know the roots of Palisades Medical Center are secured by a rich history of excellence and strength in the community.

For the fourth consecutive year, TheHarborage has received a top rating withfive stars in the fifth annual “Best NursingHomes” published by U.S. News & WorldReports.

“To earn this recognition even once isa real honor,” said Ed Davis, Administratorof The Harborage, “But to continuallyearn a top rating year after year is a tributeto our staff and everyone who works so

In creating Best Nursing Homes, U.S.News used data from Nursing HomeCompare, a web site run by the Centers forMedicare & Medicaid Services, the federalagency that sets and enforces standards fornursing homes. U.S. News awarded the“Best Nursing Home” designation to facil-ities that recently earned an overall ratingof five stars, the agency’s highest. Nursinghome ratings are based on overall perform-ance in health inspections, nurse staffingand quality of medical care.

The Harborage is one of only about24% of New Jersey nursing homes to earnfive stars and “Best Nursing Home” desig-nation. Recognized for its excellent staff,stellar ratings, dedicated service and com-prehensive patient care, The Harboragewas placed in an exclusive list of facilitiesthat consistently put patients first.

Honoring our CaregiversNational Nursing Home Week is cele-

brated each year during the month of May.This observance, which begins on Mother’s

Day, is an opportunity to acknowledge thecommitment and compassion demonstrat-ed by the care givers who serve the patientsand residents in nursing home facilities.

Palisades Medical Center (PMC) hasalways been recognized for its strong tradi-tion of community service. PMC staff andvolunteers work with community partnersto improve the lives of thousands of localresidents by offering free health screeningsand educational seminars throughout theyear. PMC’s longstanding partnershipswith social and civic organizations, religious congregations, schools, and localemployers place it in a uniquely effectiveposition to identify and address the health-care needs of the local communities itserves.

During the past year, PMC workedwith many of its partners to release the2012 Community Health NeedsAssessment.

This comprehensive report is the resultof a thorough assessment of our area'shealthcare profile, including a review of

public health data, summary patient infor-mation from care providers, and new dataobtained by means of focus groups, publicforums and a community needs assessmentsurvey.

This assessment also includes actionitems and plans to address the prevailinghealthcare concerns in PMC’s service area,including North Bergen, Union City, WestNew York, Guttenberg, Weehawken,Cliffside Park, Edgewater, and Fairview.

The top five local health issues identi-fied and addressed by the report were:

Palisades Medical Center’s move to itscurrent waterfront location 35 years agowas driven in large part by a dedicatedgroup of community members. Their goalwas to ensure that our families and neigh-bors have access to superior healthcareclose to home.

Community engagement is a centralpart of the PMC heritage. As a nonprofithospital, Palisades remains true to its mis-sion of providing the highest quality, com-passionate care for everyone. While it isimportant that hospitals provide the lead-ership and resources necessary to reach outto the community to improve the health ofall residents, including the most vulnera-ble, it is an economic reality that hospitalsmust be attentive to the bottom line.

As a Board Member and local resident

I have witnessed how Palisades is able tobalance the two. It is a strong hospital thatcontinues to advance and invest in newtechnology, equipment and programswhile being proactive in fulfilling commu-nity needs.

At the end of March a newly renovat-ed, state-of-the-art pediatric unit wasopened to better serve the growing numberof children that PMC serves. The weekendbefore more than 300 people participatedin a health fair at a local school, sponsoredand staffed by PMC. Tests for high bloodpressure, bold sugar and cholesterol weredone as screens for heart disease and dia-betes.
