Music in the shadow of warGeorge Butterworth, one ofBritain’s brightest musicalhopes, was killed in action onthe Somme. His 1911 song cycle A Shropshire Lad seemsto foreshadow the devastation about to be unleashed on the world. Maurice Ravel completed his glorious Piano Trio after the outbreak of war in 1914, driven by ‘insaneheroic rage’ before he enlisted for military service.

7PM TUESDAY 12 AUGUST

Welcome to the 2014 Festival which, I promise, will be our liveliest yet. There’s a strong theme ofdance running through our concerts this year.Whether jazz, folk, classical or even disco is yourthing, we guarantee to get your toes tapping.

One hundred years ago Europe launched itself into a catastrophic conflict. To mark the First World War centenary,we recall the tragedy and loss as well as the spirit and valour in a special concert of war music through the centuries. High-lights include Battalia, Biber’s 17th century evocation of the battlefield, and Richard Strauss’ poignant masterpiece, Metamorphosen, written amidst the ruins of 1948 Berlin.

Perhaps most moving of all is the remarkable resilience and humour infusing the popular songs of the day. I believe that’show those soldiers would like to be remembered. Please join us to commemorate their experiences and celebrate their lives. David Juritz Artistic Director
