In January 2014, EBC members and friends will come together to take part in a 21-day period of prayer and fasting. To find out more, review the questions and answers below.
Why can Bible intake become a chore instead of a discipline of joy? In what way might meditating on scripture deepen the appreciation of God’s word?
Like any other spiritual discipline, Bible intake can become a chore if we do not have spiritual direction. Discipline without direction is drudgery. We also must understand that godliness is our purpose. In order to be godly, we must be disciplined. Bible intake requires discipline of our time and being consistent with a bible-reading plan, meditating on the Word and attending weekly Bible Study. Meditating on the Word of God provides a greater appreciation of the Lord and understanding of who
He is and who we are in Christ.

Elevation Bible Institute: Inside the Classroom This column highlights course material and discussions from the Elevation Bible Institute. The question below was from the course titled, Spiritual Disciplines Seminar.
What is the purpose of prayer and fasting? Jesus expects us to fast (Matt 6:16-17) “And when you fast...” Therefore, before the start of a fast, it is important for each believer to determine the spiritual purpose for his/her fast.
When will prayer and fasting be-gin at EBC? Our January 2014 pe-riod of prayer and fasting will take place from January 2 until January 22. What type of fast will we follow? While we will come together cor-porately to pray in January 2014, we will not follow one congrega-tional fast. Instead each believer must ask the Holy Spirit to help them determine which kind of fast to follow which means there may be some members on a normal fast while others follow a partial fast.
Who should participate in this year’s fast? Before beginning any fast, it is important that everyone seek medical counsel where neces-sary. Those who are diabetic, ex-pecting, nursing, or have a physical condition that depends on a regular diet, should talk to a doctor.
At what times will we come to-gether to pray? Everyone is asked to pray individually at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and to assemble together dur-ing Wednesday Bible Study at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 7 a.m. for corporate prayer.
How will fasting help me to grow? Fasting, when done with a spiritual purpose, helps every believer grow in Christlikeness.

What’s GoinG on at EBC
As we embark on a new year, we set our sights on Acts 1:8, But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.
What does this mean? Simply that every believer who is filled with the Holy Spirit has the ability to preach the gospel in the world. And as witnesses for Christ, we will receive the power for the work that God has called us to do.
Armed with the knowledge that God expects every Christian to be a witness to the ends of the earth, we must constantly prepare for our journey. As we begin a 21-day fast, below are some topics and scriptures to consider:
Revelation – God’s vision and will (Matthew 17:21)
Revival – personal and corporate (Acts 1:4)
Repentance – personal affairs (Psalm 51)
Deliverance from bondage (Isaiah 58:6-9)
Healing (James 5: 13-18 and Isaiah 59:1-2)
Honor God – humble yourself (Matthew 6: 16-18 and 2 Chronicles 7:14-15)

As we continue to highlight EBC disciples who volunteer their time effortlessly in the Kingdom, we highlight the El-evation Bible Institute (EBI) as our ministry of the month.
Under the leadership and guid-ance of Dr. T.L. Carmichael, EBI offers a certificate pro-gram that will equip students with the biblical foundation to develop the skills needed to prepare them for Christian ministry. According to Marion Alston, the director of the pro-gram, the goal of EBI is to de-velop well-rounded Christians
in mind, body and spirit. This ministry’s favorite scripture is 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
