Now is the time to for young artists of all ages to show off their skills. The City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department, along with the Plantation Junior Womans Club and Markson Chiropractic, is once again launching its annual Art Search-a Visual Arts Competition for Students in grades K-12.

The competition, which began in 1993, was created as a way to showcase the talents of Plantations youngest artists.

Our goal is to provide an opportunity for students who are interested in visuals arts with an opportunity to have their work seen and recognized, said Ken Boyce, the citys Superintendent of Recreation.

The contest begins the Tuesday after Labor Day and runs until mid-October so that the winning entries can be displayed at the Plantation Junior Womans Clubs annual Art in the Park event, which will be held on November 12 & 13 at Liberty Tree Park, located at 7421 N.W. 5th Street. Afterwards, the winning pieces of art are also displayed in Central Park for a year. Boyce said the number of entries varies. Some years, they have received as few as 300 entries, but others have attracted more than 1200.

Each year, the PJWCs select an overall theme for the Art Search competition. This years theme isEnriching the Community. The judges will be looking

for works in all mediums, with the exception of sculptures, that best portray that theme. The club then selects approximately 5 members each year to serve as judges, who look for a com-bination of artistic talent and how well the art represents the theme. Entries have included everything from elaborate pieces to pen and ink drawings, watercolors, collages, photographs and pencil drawings. Funding for the arts is getting harder to come by, but a program like Art Search helps to nurture young talent with minimal costs, said Boyce.

A formal awards cere-mony will be held and awards will be given in each grade level. First place winners will receive a $50 gift card, second place a $25 gift card and third place a $15 gift card. All winners will also receive ribbons. Artwork must be 12 X 18 (mounted size), must be labeled on the backside with the entrants name and phone number and must be submitted with an entry form. Only one entry per person please.

Entry forms will be available Tuesday, September 6th Friday, October 14th at Plantation Central Park, Community Center, Volunteer Park, Jim Ward Community Center and Plantation Schools. All entries must be turned in to Plantation Central Park by Friday, October 14th.

For more information call Central Park at 954-452-2510.

City Launches Visual Arts Competition for Students

What do Neil Armstrong, Walter Cronkite and Steven Spielberg have in common? They were all Boy Scouts, along with other great American role models including sports legends Joe Theismann and Hank Aaron, and former Presidents John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, and George W. Bush. The Boy Scouts of America have been producing future leaders for over 100 years.

One of the reasons scouting has been so successful is that it teaches values and builds self-confidence. According to Tim Smith, marketing coordinator for the Pine Island District, Boy Scouts of America - South Florida Council, Scouting teaches citizenship, compas-sion, cooperation, courage, faith, health and fitness, honesty, perseverance, positive attitude, resourcefulness, respect and responsibility.

In todays world, Smith believes scouting is needed now more than ever; not only for its social and emotional benefits, but also for its health advantages. More and more parents are concerned that their children sit in front of a video game or computer screen all day, he explains. Scouting promotes fun, physical activity, and most of all it involves nature and the outdoors.

Smith says scouting is an ideal program for children who may not excel at athletics. What I love about scouting is that there is something for everyone and a scout can easily

find something he does well.Boy Scouts offers programs for all interests

and all ages. Most boys start as a Cub Scout in elementary school, then cross over to Boy Scouts in middle school. But, a boy can join at any time up to his 17th birthday.

Older children can join the relatively new Venture scouting program. Its open to boys and girls ages 14 to 21. Thats right girls can now join Boy Scouts and benefit from its longstanding traditions and character building success.

The venturing program is for young adults who want a broader experience in leadership, vocations and hobbies, explains Smith, citing as an example the Sea Scouts who have their own vessels and work closely with Florida marine resources including the Coast Guard.

You and your child can learn more about the Boy Scout programs in your area at School

Night on Thursday, September 15th. A few Plantation packs have already commit-ted to hosting a School Night. These include Pack 406 at Central Park, Pack 111 at Plantation United Methodist Church and Pack 175 at American Heritage School. To find a location near you, go to www.BeAScout.org, enter your zip code to view a map and list of locations. This September 11 will mark a milestone day in U.S. history. Cities, towns and residents worldwide will mark the tenth anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. While many local cities are planning to mark the day, the city of Plantations tribute will not come until the following month, when they are planning to formally dedicate a piece of the fallen World Trade towers. We will do something special with that in honor of the tenth anniversary, said Plantation Fire Department Spokesperson Joel Gordon.

According to Gordon, the city obtained a piece of the WTC through the efforts of local resident, Dennis Conklin, who contacted a program run by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Pieces of the fallen towers are sent to cities nationwide to help honor and memorialize the victims. Plantation received a 3 foot tall chunk of concrete with a beam attached, that will permanently sit on a specially designed monument at the citys Firefighter Memorial. The attacks touched and hurt everyone. To say that we will be a part of it is very emotional, said Gordon, who knew several of the firefighters

who perished on 9-11. The installation, which will include a full memorial ceremony, will be open to the public.

The city was looking to do the installation during its own firefighter memorial, which they hold each year in October. Several years ago, they built a memorial, located at 550 NW 65 Avenue, that honors the name of citys firefighters who have passed. It wound up to be during Fire Prevention Month, which we felt was a little more appropriate said Gordon.

Though the city is not hosting a 9-11 Commemoration event, there are other events being held close by. The City of Sunrise will host its September 11th Remembrance Ceremony, on 9/11, at the Sunrise Public Safety Building beginning at 8:30 a.m. The center is located at 10440 West Oakland Park Boulevard. This event will feature distinguished speakers, as well as music and the presentation of colors. It is free and open to the public. After the observance, guests can also view . commemorative Honoring September 11, 2001 exhibit in the Civic Center Art Gallery.

City to Dedicate Memorial to 9-11 Attacks

A fter making a name as a Bollywood actress as a young woman, Plantation resident Somy Ali is now changing lives on a much different stage. For the past few years, Ali has been helping to rescue immigrant women from domestic abuse. After working out of her home for the first few years, her non-profit organization, No More Tears, has taken a big step by moving into rented office space in Plantation. The 1,000 square foot office, which opened this summer, gives her more room and privacy to help the women who come to her. Before she had the office, intake meetings were held either in a bedroom in her home, or a fast food restaurant. Moving to our own office has brought us to a different level, Ali said. We have an intake room and a waiting room.

No More Tears is devoted to providing individu-alized assistance to victims of domestic violence in the U.S. Among the services they can provide, legal counsel, financial assistance and psychotherapy. Since taking on their first case in 2007, they have helped close to 120 women. Alis first client was a woman from Bangladesh, who was a neighbor in Plantation. Her husband had been beating her for ten years, and she didnt know where to go for help. I realized there had to be many more women brought to this country who are

being abused and dont have an outlet because they dont speak English, said Ali. Though the group began as an outlet for South Indian, South Asian and Middle Eastern women. Ali says they have helped women of all walks of life. One thing Ive learned is that domestic violence has no prejudice, she said.

Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Ali moved to Bombay, India where she worked in 10 Hindi films and several commercials. At the age of 24, looking for change, she moved to the United States where she studied psychology at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. She created SO-ME, a socially conscious clothing company. designed to raise awareness about human rights issues and take a stand against injustices universally. No More Tears is largely funded by donations and SO-ME, but the tough economy has her looking for new lines of funding to help the victims of abuse.

She is working in partnership with Women in Distress and has applied for a grant from other sources to help stay afloat. She is also looking for help from the community, many of which she says simply dont want to talk about the problem of domestic violence, even though it is exists in all corners of society. You will be amazed at how many women in Plantation alone are being abused on a daily basis. We need to do something about it, she said.

They will be holding a fundraiser September 15 at Sweet Tomatoes Plantation, located at 801 S. University Drive, where 15% of sales will go to help No More Tears. For more information on other events or to help, visit http://www.nmtproject.org.

More than 100 people from around the coun-try gathered in South Florida recently to help shine the spotlight on one of their favorite high school memories. The South Plantation High School Drama Alumni held a reunion recently, welcoming back anyone who was ever a part of the schools storied drama department. The reunion drew former students who have been out of the school for 20 years, but still feel a link. We were a tight knit group of people and we spent a lot of time together rehearsing and performing. I think everyone just wanted another chance to reunite,. said Giovanna Braund, class of 1990, who organized the reunion with fellow 1990 Alum Matt Smith.

The reunion, which welcomed back drama students as well as teachers from 1980 through 1996, was held with a series of events in Fort Lauderdale July 22-23. Alumni got together early in the weekend for a get-together, and then the next day, toured their old stomping grounds at South Plantation High School. To welcome them home, cur-rent SPHS drama students under the direction of drama teacher Jason Zembuch, put

on a performance. It was really incredible to see what they are working on now, said Braund.

On Saturday evening, a reunion gala was held at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Ft Lauderdale, with a full dinner buffet, DJ, dancing, karaoke, tributes, memorabilia, and DVD show. We thought it would be fun to get a large group of drama people together,. said Braund, who lives in Charlotte and still keeps her love of drama alive by working in community theater. The reunion was also meant to be a fundraiser for the theater program, which is in desperate

need of theater renovations. The idea for the drama reunion came about a year ago, at the 20th reunion of the class

of 1990. Those who were part of the drama program recalled long hours spent together in rehearsals. festivals and competitions both locally and overseas. The reunion was a chance to relive some of the glory days and to get reacquainted. It was such a special time for us. It made our high school years and everyone has such good memories of it, said Braund. To check out the event on Facebook, see SPHS DRAMA REUNION.

W indows are energy holes. So, even though windows make up only about 10% of a homes insulated shell, as much as 50% of our energy is lost through our windows. Translated into dollars and cents, up to half of what you pay for cooling pours right through them.

In Florida, heat is a way of life. Incoming sunlight is harmful to wood causing premature cracking and fading. The UV fades art work, rugs, furniture and upholstery. But there is a beautiful solution from Hunter Douglas. You can have your view and at the same time block

the heat and UV with Silhouette and Luminette sheer shadings from Hunter Douglas. Kill the heat but keep the view - Come in to our showroom and see the

evidence yourself. Well measure the temperature of the heat coming through the window glass with and without a Silhouette and youll be amazed at how much cooler it is with the shade in there.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient - SHGC tells us what fraction of solar energy hitting the window actually enters the home. Lower numbers are better. Standard double-pane windows have a SHGC of 0.76, meaning 76% of the solar energy gets into the home. Add Luminette Privacy sheers and watch that number drop down to as low as 0.20. With energy prices rising, youll want to save as much as you can. At Beautiful Windows we have many different options to help you save money.

Daylighting - This is the practice of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity. The sheers from these products actually diffuse light as it enters and help draw it deeper into the room. Plus, you can direct incoming light where it is needed most by tilting the louvers and slats. Another added advantage is that the sheers on the Silhouette actually keep out 80% of the incoming UV to protect upholstery, flooring and art from fading. When you visit us, ask to see our oversized Silhouette with room darkening features to keep your master room cozy & cool.

Motorization - Flipping a wall switch to operate your shades beats having to go window to window to operate each blind individually. Wall switches and remotes can be programmed to handle multiple shades individually or in unison. The platinum technology from Hunter Douglas can be integrated into any home automation system.

View Through - If view is important, then you want the 4 Silhouette because it offers the most view through (space between louvers). It brings the beauty of the outdoors in. The Luminette marries the beauty of sheers with the privacy of soft draperies and allows you to rotate the vanes for infinite degrees of light control.

Living smart - Going green is about making small changes that can have a large impact: Energy costs dollars so the more energy we save, the fewer dol-lars we spend. Plus, by saving money and energy resources, we leave a healthier world to future generations. Living smart is the best choice for everyone.

    Shading with Style

BEFORE: A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. You be the judge. In the before image the sun fills the room and all the upholstery and rugs look washed. Imagine the heat gain in this opening.

AFTER: Compare to the same room after Silhouette window coverings have been installed. You can now sit comfortably in the same room, without dealing with the heat and yet enjoy your view of the outside.

A longtime tennis fan helped to bring a one-of-a-kind exhibition to Plantation recently. For the first time in its history, the Frank Veltri Tennis Center hosted a Wheelchair Tennis Exhibition on its courts. More than one dozen world class tennis athletes in wheelchairs demonstrated their skills before dozens of fans August 13. Fans had a chance to see what dedicated athletes can really do, if they make a total effort to make it happen, said Mark Morgenstern of Plantation, one of the organizers of the exhibition.

The free program, provided in partnership with the National Wheelchair Sports Fund of Boynton Beach, included singles, doubles, and mixed doubles play by the athletes of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour. The NEC, which originated in 1992 with 11 international tournaments, has grown to more than 173 tournaments in 46 countries. It boasts more than $1million dollars in prize money to its athletes and is one of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world. Organizers say it integrates very easily with the able-bodied game since it can be played on any regular tennis court, with no modifications to the court or the size of rackets or balls.Wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able-bodied tennis, with the only exception being that the wheelchair tennis player is

allowedtwo bouncesof the ball. Players take to the worlds best known courts and the number 1 ranked players are honored as the Wheelchair Tennis World Champions during the ITF World Champions Dinner held at Roland Garros Stadium in France.

The exhibition was organized by Morgenstern, who is a familiar face on the courts of the Frank Veltri Tennis Center. I thought most people down here had never seen wheelchair tennis being played in Broward County, Morgenstern said. In addition to bringing wheelchair tennis to Plantation, Morgenstern also worked with the tennis center this summer to find ways to make summer camp accessible for children of military parents. With the blessing of Tennis Center officials, Morgenstern tirelessly went through recruiting stations and eventually the US. Southern Command to find children, ages 6-16, who live in the Plantation area and have a family member deployed or on active duty. As many as 10-15 children came out and enjoyed tennis, swimming and other sports. Morgenstern said he is hoping to expand the program next summer.

How do you make it to the Olympics as a member of the U.S. Swim Team? Two Olympians will be coming to the Plantation Aquatic Center at Central Park this month to share their advice. The Fitter & Faster Tour will visit September 17 for a day-long event featuring two time Olympic Gold medalist Peter Vanderkaay and Olympic Silver medalist Lacey Nymeyer. They are coming to give back to the younger kidsand promote the sport of swimming, said Jimmy Parmenter, the head coach of the Plantation Swim Team, which is hosting the event.

But on September 17, the spotlight will fall on Vanderkaay and Nymeyer who will be getting in the water and swimming with the kids, teaching them their favorite drills, explaining the different strokes and techniques and answering any questions the swimmers might have. Everyone taking part will get a chance to check out an Olympic medal and get an autograph and photo with the Olympians. Baseball has their stars, football has their stars and this is just a great opportunity for kids to come out and try something new with two of swimmings stars, said Parmenter.

It will be the first time the Fitter &

Though they speak a different language, and live in a differ-ent culture, there is an undeniable bond between the Plantation Fire Department, and their counterparts who man the Union Chalaca Fire Station in Peru. So much so, that recently several members of the Union Chalaca Fire Department traveled to Plantation to present Chief Joe Harris with a com-memorative medal. marking a major milestone in their department. The medal signified Union Chalacas 150th anniversary of service, and they wanted their fellow firefighters in Plantation to share in it. This is a true honor. To be consid-ered an integral part of their celebration is a great honor for us, said the Chief.

The medal was presented in June, several years after a relationship was formed between the two departments. It began when Plantation firefighter Capt. Robert Villalon, who has friends and relatives in the Union Chalaca area, first introduced himself to his firefighting brethren. Since then, members of the Union Chalaca Department have been making regular visits to the Plantation Fire Department every time they come to the United States. In return, Plantation firefighters do the same when they travel to Peru. We have shared a brotherhood with Union Chalaca for some time now, explained Chief Harris. Both departments are very similar and share a similar heritage.

Though Union Chalaca is older having been in service for 150 years, the departments share the unique link of volunteerism. Union Chalaca is the oldest, all volunteer fire department in Peru, while Plantation is the largest volunteer fire department in Florida with 190 active members. We both have a long standing tradition in our communities and are very similar in how we are made up and how we work, said Plantation Department spokesperson Joel Gordon.

Gordon added that it is not uncommon for firefighters to visit other fire stations worldwide. Usually, they are readily invited in to swap stories and share ideas. He

says no matter wher. firefighters travel, there is a link that instantly connects them to others in far away fire houses. There is a brotherhood between firefighters, spoken and unspoken, throughout the world, said Gordon.

The next time the Washington Nationals come to South Florida to play the Florida Marlins, you might want to pay extra attention to #38, first base-men Michael Morse. The 29-year old was born and raised in Plantation, and his now having a breakout year in the major leagues. Hes having a great year. I am very proud of him. Hes put in a lot of hard work, said proud mother Arlene Morse.

The 11-year pro is having a banner year starting at first base for the Nationals. Morse began the season in left field, but took over first base when Adam LaRoche went on the disabled list. In his first four games there, he hit three home runs with eight RBIs and has since been among the team leaders in hitting and slugging percentage, with a .311 batting average with 17 home runs by the end of July. According to his mother, he also came just a few votes shy of playing in the MLB ALL-Star game.

Morse got his athletic start on the fields of Plantation. At the age of 4, he started playing t-ball at Fig Tree Park and later little league baseball at Central Park. But baseball wasnt his only love. Michael also played basketball, flag

football, soccer, tennis, and hockey. He just grew up on the fields at Central Park playing several sports, not only baseball, said Morse.

By the time he reached his junior year at Nova High School, where he attended from k-12th grade, his family and coaches saw he had something special and urged him to focus on baseball. Instead of opting for college, Michael entered the MLB amateur

draft in 2000, and was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 82nd overall pick. In 2005, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners where he played for four years before being traded again in 2009 to the Nationals. In addition to outfield and first base, he also plays shortstop. Michael, a bachelor, makes his home in Plantation Acres during the off-season.

Mom Arlene is his most ardent fan, a job she says isnt always easy because she worries about injuries and hitting slumps. Its very stressful at times, she joked. Thanks to satellite television, she watches just about every minute of all his games, sometimes staying up until 2 or 3 a.m. for the West Coast games. But sleepy days or not, she says she wouldnt change a thing. I love it. I catch just about all of them, she said.

S ince becoming owners of TAG USA Gymnastics over two years ago, Marissa and Michael Zoldanrecreated the gym into the mostsuccessful gymnastics program in Broward County. Not only does it boast the largest and most state-of-the-art facility around, but the strongest competitive teams as well. Taking the headlines, though, the TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation continues its commitment to finding a cure for cancer, in addition to helping the less fortunate in our community.

The TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation is currently hosting Supplied for Success, a school supply drive to benefit Kids In Distress. Anyone interested in making a donation is welcome to stop by the gym; you dont need to have children enrolled in the programs to help TAG USA fill its collection box with new pencils, crayons,

glue sticks, folders, composition books, and other back-to-school necessities. They will be accepting donations until Friday, August 12th.

In addition, the TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation continues its efforts to fight cancer. Two years ago, Marissa Zoldan was treated foruterine cancer and unfortunately was recently diagnosed with another health scare. Hearing a diagnosis of cancer will irreversibly change anyones life and Marissa, Michael and their family wish to help erase cancer so that other people will not have to suffer through similar traumatic surgeriesor treatments. Breast, cervical and uterine cancers are prevalent and the TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation is committed to creating more awareness and raising funds to find a cure.

In addition to its philanthropic work, TAG USA Gymnastics is committed to developing champion gymnasts. It is poised for yet another impressive season.

Considering 2010-2011 was only our third competitive season, our teams were incredible, especially when compared to other gyms that have been around for more than twenty years, boasts Marissa.

TAG USA won nearly 50 State Championships and many of its gymnasts qualified for Nationals. One of our elite gymnasts won six gold medals at the Mexican National Games and is now training for the Pan-American Games, notes Marissa. Even our first year TAG USA Cheer team won a Junior State Championship.

The success of TAG USA Gymnastics is based on a different approach to the young athletes. Marissa and Michaels personal approach to the patents and children is what makes TAG USA so special. In addition, the talented coaching staff strives to meet each members individual needs.

The gym itself adds to TAG USAs success. Its been a year since the amazing 38,000 square foot facility opened. Its now large enough to comfortably accommodate all ages and levels of athletes, from tiny tots to elite gymnasts.

The Mommy & Me and Toddler programs have a separate 2,500 square feet of gym with mini trampolines, equipment, and climbing apparatus. The rest of the gym is divided so that all preschool classes, beginner to advanced recreational gymnastics classes, trampoline classes, cheer, and all gymnastics teams have their own space. There is no overcrowding of areas and no waiting in line to usethe floor or any equipment.

The future looks bright for TAG USA Gymnastics. Plans are now in the works to open an adultspinning/aerobics room, a game room, and a middle school ath-letic training area. Over the summer, additional air con-ditioning was com-pleted, the trench pit was finished, and a couple of other surprises were added. As TAG USA Gymnastics continues to grow, the Zoldans hope to have the opportunity towelcome every Broward athlete into the TAG USA family.

TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Fall classes begin the week of August 22nd. For advanced students, there is a boys and girls competitive gymnastics team, a trampoline and tumbling team, and cheer team. For more information on classes, open gym, athletic training, or birthday party packages, visit www.TagGymnastics.com or call (954) 384-9393.

Whiplash is a common and painful injury caused by motor vehicle accidents. While almost everyone has heard the name, most people dont have a clear idea of what whiplash is, how serious it can be or how to prevent it.

how do car accidents cause whiplash?Whiplash is a tearing of the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck that occurs when the body is exposed to a sudden jolt, such as in a car accident, a fall, or a blow to the head while playing sports.

The injury is most common in rear-end collisions, but can occur from a collision from any direction. Additionally, it doesnt have to be a high-speed crash.

In a collision, the car is abruptly accelerated forward (or in another direc-tion). Everything in the car, including your body, resists this sudden forward motion, which is why you feel pushed back in your seat. Braced against the seat, your torso is carried forward with the car. If your head is not braced, it can be jerked back for a second or so. The jolt of the crash can whip your head up and back, tearing muscles and other structures in your neck. Your necks reflex reaction is to pull your head forward, but that can be overdone in a car accident, making the injury worse.

what are the symptoms of whiplash?Often, the symptoms of whiplash are not immediately apparent after a car accident. They typically take 12 to 24 hours to develop and the symptoms may get worse every day until properly treated. Whiplash commonly takes several months to as long as two (2) years after the accident to heal.

Common symptoms of whiplash occur in the neck, shoulders, back, and arms, and can include:

Pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling and/or swelling Muscle spasms Weakness or temporary loss of movement in the neck Headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears Blurred vision or other vision changes Cognitive issues such as problems concentrating, memory loss and irritability Depression and sleep interruption Difficulty performing daily activities at home or work

how can i reduce the risk of a whiplash injury?Your first line of defense against whiplash is to wear a seatbelt at all times while in an automobile and to properly position your headrest. The top of the headrest should be just below the top of your head. Everyone in the car should routinely adjust the headrest just as they routinely fasten their safety belts. Keep in mind, however, that whiplash can be caused by a collision from any direction. If your head snaps to the side, for example, the headrest will not be in a position to protect you. After any car accident, be aware of your symptoms. If you are experiencing any neck pain, be sure to be evaluated by a doctor.

Just about every scientific and governmental orga-nization is now in agreement that there really is an Autism epidemic in the US. If it were merely the case that the diagnosis is just more noticeable, then where are the 1/100 autistic adults that should be walking around who went unnoticed? Any experienced teacher will agree that the explosion of children who exhibit speech and language delay, social difficulties and repetitive or compulsive behaviors is a new phenomenon. I am a physician who has been fol-lowing up on the medical outcomes of children who were at high

risk from prematurity, severe illness, drug and alcohol abuse, complicated births and HIV exposure. It was at Early Steps in Broward County that I got to experience, first hand, this new disorder that we call Autism Spectrum.

By definition, epidemics in human beings are environmental (the flu, infectious diarrhea, radiation exposure, for example). People are not fruit flies, and our children did not genetically change in this century. In fact, I believe that it is just the opposite; that our fragile fetuses and newborns have the genetic background of 3 billion years during which time there havent been 85,000 man-made chemicals in the air, food and water. Simply put, our bodies cannot correctly eliminate offending agents and this results in our immune system going into overdrive. Somehow, this affects susceptible individuals males (definitely the weaker sex), those with a family history of allergy or autoimmune disease, premature infants, siblings of children who already are affected

and instead of turning on the genes that create normal development, their bodies spend a great deal of energy on the toxic cleanup instead.

Why do so many conventional medical experts believe that autism cannot be cured? Im sure that is because we are talking apples and oranges. The autism that was first described in the late 1930s (as a psychiatric, not medical, condition) is simply NOT the same disorder that CAN be treated in todays version. Todays affected children do not ALL show total isolation, severe disruptive behaviors, lack of eye contact or an inability to develop.

More importantly, many of the affected individuals who have the diagnosis of Autism today have lots of problems with gastro-intestinal symptoms which ARE amenable to effective, inexpensive and safe nutritional supplements such as probiotics and extra vitamins. Although improvement from special foods is a controversial issue, young children who demonstrate food sensitivities DO improve when offending agents are withheld from their diet. Many disruptive behaviors such as oppositional behavior and tantrums can be affected by diagnosing and treating gut health in these individuals.

Additionally, when these simple interventions are combined with traditional therapies such as Speech & Language, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Occupational or Physical Therapy, the patients progress can become remarkable.

Regardless of what we call it, every child deserves early detection for this modern disorder so that early, safe, inexpensive and effective interventions are instituted in order to maximize an affected individuals potential development.

P lantation 8th graders are going to be among those who will have an up close opportunity to see an integral part of American history. Thanks to a project headed up locally by the Junior Achievement of South Florida, the students will have the chance to learn about the cornerstone of their rights and freedoms by viewing exact replicas of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The array of constitutional plaques will be housed in a brand new gallery within JA World Patten Family Finance Park in Coconut Creek and will be unveiled at a ceremony on September 16 and 17. It is an exciting undertaking, and we envision these plaques as a wonderful complement to our storefront displays and other business enterprise elements, said Melissa Aiello, President of JA South Florida.

From that day on, as many as 400 Broward County 8th graders each day will have a chance to view the plaques as part of a special field trip.. Since 2009, all county 5th and 8th graders have visited JA World to take part in their curriculum, which focuses on business, economic and life-skills programs for students k-12. This year, the 8th graders will have the added bonus of viewing the constitutional plaques. Students from Seminole Middle will be going in November, while students from Plantation Middle will be visiting in April.

The plaques are part of a national effort known as the Spirit for Freedom Tour, which travels to 20 cities each year to immerse students, teachers and parents in the historical significance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. While those exhibits are temporary, the exhibit at JA World will be on site permanently, thanks to a gift by the Leo Goodwin Foundation. Our goal is to encourage youth to understand our nations history and the importance of the Constitution, and with 50,000 children coming through the doorways at JA World, it is an ideal partnership. said Alan Goldberg, a trustee of the Leo Goodwin Foundation.

In a special section of JA World designed to look like a Washington D.C. museum,

the students will have a chance to view the replicas, which were created to look exactly like the real constitution, complete with ink splotches and other markings. Aiello says it is designed to bring to life the reality of what they may have read about the constitution in a textbook.

We immerse kids in experiences so that they learn through experiences, not through a test. So when they come in and are able to really look at the documents after having studied it, I think it will bring it alive for them, she said. Founded in 1959, Aiello says the mission of Junior Achievement of South Florida is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in the global economy. We believe we help children own their own economic success.

New Exhibit Gives Students Close-Up Look at U.S. History

J im Stryder is looking to give Plantation students an out-of-this-world experience this school year. Hes hoping to enhance their love of astronomy and the solar sciences through a program called Solar Week, an inter-active, outreach program run through NASA. The program has been offered in the area for the past two years, but teach-ers in Plantation apparently havent seen the light yet. We havent had any schools from north of I-595 in the Plantation or Sunrise area, said Stryder, a UC-Berkeley Solar Week volunteer, who has been part of the outreach program since its inception in 1999.

Solar Week is geared for students primarily in 4th grade up through high school levels. It is a twice-a-year online event produced by UC-Berkeley, NASA and others in the industry, to teach the nations students about the solar sciences. Each day is a different themed approach about how science studies the sun, what we know about it, and what we dont, said Stryder, whose background is in Aerospace Journalism.

Every day, students and teachers can go online to take part in different activities and learning games in relationship to solar learning. Whenever possible, volunteers like Stryder help supplement the online activities with actual hands-on activities, at the schools. Sometimes they will bring specially designed solar-equipped telescopes that

let students safely observe the Sun. Students also learn about UV-Radiation awareness. One of the more unique aspects that Solar Week offers is that students get to submit questions online anytime during the week, and then have those questions answered by actual working scientists. I want students to know that learning science can be fun and rewarding and it is a great supplement for the classroom, said Stryder,.

Last school year, Stryder and other Solar Week volun-

teers visited at least six local South Florida schools in support of Solar Week, including the David Posnack Hebrew Day School in Davie, Silver Ridge Elementary and Nova Blanche Forman Elementary in Davie and Gator Run Elementary in Weston.

The next projected Solar Week will be in either late September or October and is completely free of charge to both the students and the schools. The program can be run anytime during the year, not just during the designated Solar Week and it doesnt have to be offered in a 5-day period. For more information, visit www.solarweek.org.
