Ploeisti is situated within one of the most economically developedcounties of Romania, benefiting strongly from the short distanceto the capital, Bucharest. Although there is no available offi cialdata on the disposable incomes of Ploiestis population, it isestimated that Ploiestis inhabitants earn at least 10%-20%more than the county average, due to the citys high concentrationof foreign investments and its skilled labour force.
Ploiesti attracts much foreign direct investment; the biggestinternational companies include Coca Cola, Unilever, Timken,
Holcim, Johnson Controls, Interbrew, Calsonic Kansei, LukOil,Saint-Gobain and Yazaki.
Unemployment levels are lower than the national average andincome levels are also infl ated by supplementary income fromRomanians economically active abroad.

The high streetHigh street retail is concentrated downtown in
Ploiesti City along Republicii Blvd where all of the citysimportant national and international retail chains areconcentrated. The prime shopping area is fully let,and competition for space means rents are high.
Ploiestis shopping centre market is currentlyunderdeveloped, with just one major development.
Many international retailers are expected toenter the Romanian market in the near future.
Shopping centresPloiestis shopping centre market is currently underdeveloped, with just one major development, Grand Center. The scheme, located in the downtown area of Ploiesti, is the former state-
owned department store of the city, and has a letting areaof around 15,000m. Other developments include the smalldowntown Mercur Shopping Center, small galleries withreduced local impact and two medium-size unrefurbishedold-style centres.
