Freeborders Unveils Expansion Plans in China 29 August 2007

Freeborders Incorporated has just expanded operations in China.

Freeborders currently has a state of the art technology center in Shenzhen, which has provided IT outsourcing services to Fortune 1000 US and European companies for nearly a decade. The company has expanded operations and has opened a new office in Guangzhou. This move gives Freeborders much needed additional space and positions them closer to key clients.

This expansion will help to facilitate Freeborders’ growth, provide additional business continuity capability, and allow Freeborders to gain access to an additional talent pool in Guangzhou. Because of significant demand for Freeborders IT outsourcing services, the company is also evaluating additional locations for expansion over the next 12-18 months. Locations such as Xian, Chengdu and others are under consideration.

Jim Reesing, Freeborders Executive Vice President for Global Sales and Operations, explained the drivers of Freeborders growth. “Our unique global operating mode, CHINDUSsm, has contributed significantly to our growth and need for additional locations. The CHINDUSsm approach includes adopting best practices from the US, India, and China. From the US, we leverage our strong on site domain knowledge, our strong US management team, and our relationship management capabilities. From India, we adopt industry best practices around governance and the global delivery model. From China, we leverage the massive talent pool, the strong technical skills, and the English language capabilities that China can deliver.”

Industry leaders and analysts agree that China is the next big destination in offshore sourcing strategies. Its wealth of highly skilled labor and solid infrastructure place it atop most “short” lists for offshoring engagements.

“As more and more Fortune 1000 companies take advantage of a multi-country sourcing strategy, China is becoming the most compelling choice,” Jim adds. “The opening of our Guangzhou facility is symbolic of the growth and scale we are seeing across the China market”

"Integrated Manufacturing is exactly the type of partner for us.” said Scott Sweeney, vice president at Kubotek USA. “The company offers a complementary product, GibbsCAM." KeyCreator is the very best CAD tool to prepare and edit models to get them ready for manufacturing. Manufactures worldwide struggle with interoperability problems and the difficulty of trying to edit parametric models that they did not create. With KeyCreator these problems vanish, saving manufacturers a great deal of time and money.” said Dick Smith, Director of Operations forIntegrated Manufacturing Technologies. Scott Sweeney, VP of Business Development, comments on Kubotek USA’s channel expansion in the Americas “When customers begin using KeyCreator it is like going from using MS-Dos to Windows. Instead of programming the computer on how you want to design a product, you just design it, using geometry. We owe it to our customers to expand our channel to ensure that every CAD user has an opportunity to be serviced by a local reseller. To help support our growing channel we have initiated live demos on a weekly basis. Our channel can direct new prospects to this live web demo to get them exposed to our breakthrough technology. After years of literally nothing new in the CAD world, KeyCreator is really taking CAD design to the next level.” We are continuing to selectively expand its reseller channel across the Americas. We offer an attractive program that rivals its CAD competitors.” About Integrated Manufacturing Technologies (IMT)

PLM Survey Results Show a Need for More Efficient Engineering Change, Bill of Material, and Compliance Management 28 August 2007

Omnify Software announced the results of its annual customer survey. The survey polled more than 100 Omnify customers, both new and legacy, in order to research and evaluate common product development challenges before and after their PLM implementation. Omnify Software reports that approximately 91 percent of respondents indicated they were able to overcome product development challenges using PLM software.

Survey results showed that there is a significant need among manufacturers for more efficient engineering change, Bill of Material (BOM) and component management, as well as ease of communicating necessary product information to various departments. The survey confirmed that customers were able to resolve these product development challenges by implementing a PLM solution and were pleased with how they were able to streamline their operations and develop products much easier and faster. Prior to implementing a PLM solution, the majority of respondents reported that managing product information in different locations and outgrowing Excel or homegrown solutions were key issues. These practices could not support the growing amounts of data involved in designing and manufacturing a product. Employing PLM technology was a strategic initiative to create more efficient product design and development processes by managing product data in a single, secure location and eliminating silos of information throughout the enterprise.

The survey also uncovered that the most common market trend manufacturers are seeing today is the need to meet diverse compliance requirements such as RoHS, FDA, Quality and ISO. Respondents reported that they feel Omnify is in a strong position to support these trends with the system's ability to manage detailed product data, track change history, handle quality/CAPA information, and its robust reporting capabilities. Over 82% of customers stated that they are currently using Omnify to manage their compliance processes or plan to. Ease of implementation and depth of capabilities, followed by ease of use, are key factors when selecting a PLM system. According to the survey, customers selected Omnify over other PLM vendors mainly for the ease of implementation and use as well as its rich PLM feature set. The business-ready solution from Omnify allows customers to be trained and implemented within days due to its intuitive user interface and open technology platform. Omnify manages the complete product record delivering component data, BOM, engineering change, and documentation management. Empower, Omnify's next-generation PLM solution, incorporates project, quality/CAPA, and training requirements management functionality to further enhance visibility to the entire product development process. "Both the ease of use and functionality of Omnify has helped us to easily transition to paperless operations and establish real-time data exchange among our product development teams," said Raleigh Morgan, Documentation Control Manager for EMS Technologies. "On average, we have achieved over a 50% reduction in process steps with Omnify."

SAP Reinforces Importance of India to Company's 2010 Growth Strategy Aug. 28, 2007

SAP AG today announced significant successes in the fast-growing Indian market that are helping the company better execute its vision for 2010. In the space of just one year, SAP has doubled the number of Indian customers to 2,000, highlighting a level of growth unprecedented for the company around the globe. The announcement was made during the first-ever visit by the entire SAP Executive Board to India, reflecting the rising importance of the country to SAP both as a vibrant market as well as a technology development and services-support delivery center.

SAP Grows Indian Customer Base from 1,000 to 2,000 in One Year In a sign of overwhelming acceptance among Indian customers, SAP announced that it has doubled its customer base in India from 1,000 to 2,000 since August 2006. SAP was also the first enterprise software vendor in India to cross the 1,000 customer-mark, which further reinforces the company's leadership in India.

"The unprecedented growth that we are seeing from India is one of the best examples of how our 2010 strategy translates into action," said Henning Kagermann, CEO and chairman of the executive board, SAP. "Markets like India are at an inflection point when it comes to the adoption of technology by businesses of all shapes and sizes. For instance, it took us nine years in India to reach the 1,000 customer mark, and only one to double it."

Globally, SAP has set itself a goal of reaching 100,000 customers by 2010. In order to achieve this goal, the company plans to significantly expand the addressable market for enterprise software solutions by aggressively targeting small and midsize enterprises (SMEs) and emerging markets. Markets such as India and China will play a central role in helping the company achieve its vision.

Reaffirming $1 Billion Investment for India, SAP Labs India Set to Grow in Gurgaon, Focusing on Global Service and Support Validating the continuing importance of India to SAP, the company reaffirmed the investment of $1 billion in the country by 2010. The announcement was originally made in 2006 coinciding with the elevation of India as a 'strategic hub' for SAP, enabling the company to draw more attention, resources and focus required to sustain and build upon its momentum in the country. A major portion of SAP's investment in India is targeted at expanding the company's global development and services and support hub in India, SAP Labs. Originally established in 1998 in Bangalore, India became the first region for SAP worldwide to have development and services and support centers in multiple cities when it opened a center in Gurgaon in 2006. The Gurgaon center delivers a full set of services to the company and its global customers across multiple product categories. "SAP Labs India is today the largest research and development hub and support presence for us outside Germany," added Kagermann. "While the Bangalore center will continue to play a central global leadership role, we now foresee the Gurgaon center focusing on global service and support scaling up significantly in the next few years to enable us to meet our aggressive goals for India."

Indian SMEs a Significant Source of Growth for SAP Small businesses and midsize companies are the fastest-growing segments for SAP in India. Through its SAP® All-in-One solution targeted at fast-growing midsize companies, and SAP® Business One solution targeted at small businesses, SAP is a market leader in the Indian SME enterprise software space. "Today, Indian SMEs are as aggressive and confident in their business outlook as their larger counterparts and demand enterprise solutions that are powerful and robust enough to handle strong growth," said Leo Apotheker, deputy CEO and member of the executive board, SAP AG. "SAP provides a comprehensive portfolio of solutions for small businesses and midsize companies and is continuing to invest in its existing portfolio to bring value and innovation to its customers." Customers ranging from Subhiksha Retail, SAP's 1000th SME customer in India, which is using the SAP All-in-One solution as a foundation to expand its store presence in India from 750 to 1,500 in two years to Masaurhi Petrol Station, which is implementing SAP Business One to automate its processes and improve customer service support, show that SAP is today the overwhelming choice by Indian SMEs.

NTPC and ITC Papers to Join Extensive Index of Indian Businesses That Run SAP SAP also announced two significant additions to its customer base in India. The first is NTPC, India's largest thermal power generating company and one of the officially identified high-potential public sector companies, called 'Navratnas' in India. The company is up and running on a comprehensive SAP implementation based on the SAP(R) for Utilities solution portfolio, capping one of the largest-ever projects in the utilities industry that will see the replacement of the company's disparate legacy system. "Given the large scale of NTPC's operations and the complexity of our structure, we wanted to implement a business software solution that would establish uniform business processes, improve decision support and control over operations," said T. Sankarlingham, chairman and managing director, NTPC. SAP also announced that ITC Paperboards & Specialty Papers Division (ITC-PSPD), a division of ITC

Delcam to Demo Adaptive Blade Repair at EMO 30 August 2007

Delcam will perform live demonstrations of the use of its software for the adaptive repair of turbine blades at the EMO exhibition to be held in Hannover from 17th to 22nd September. The technique, which will be shown on a Roeders machine tool fitted with Renishaw probing, is based on Delcam’s combination of expertise in software for both machining and inspection. This has been built up over many years of development of PowerMILL and PowerINSPECT.

Adaptive machining allows successful production and repair of the most complex components, by using in-process measurement to close the information gaps in the chain of operations.

The most common applications are those where the exact position of a heavy workpiece on the machine tool bed is unknown or when the precise shape of the starting material can vary, for example, when finish machining castings, forgings or large, flexible composite components.

The most challenging adaptive machining operations are those where the precise final shape of the component is unknown. This is needed when repairing turbine blades that have been distorted by the high temperatures in aircraft engines or other components that have been changed from their nominal CAD shape during service.

The initial stage of the process is to measure the blade with the Renishaw probe to determine the extent of its deviation from the nominal CAD data. Then, the morphing functionality in Delcam’s PowerSHAPE hybrid modeller can be used to bring the CAD model into line with the actual geometry. The probe is also used to determine the extent of the weld that needs to be machined away. With these measurements, toolpaths can be generated within PowerMILL that will remove the excess weld without violating the blade shape and without excessive air cutting.

made available within the latest generation of the product, including turning stock automation for lathes, open-pocket milling, EDM machine specific machining technology, improved 3D machining performance, B-axis turning for 5-axis mill-turn machines, and more. The new open pocket feature and open pocket machining cycles in ESPRIT 2008 combine to offer greater machining flexibility and improved cycle times when machining pockets with a combination of open edges and closed walls. These new machining cycles will allow the tool to hang partially over the open edge to improve the edge finish and provide a more constant cutter load throughout the cutting cycle. Numerous other additions and enhancements were made to ESPRIT in support of improving the productivity of both the milling programmer and milling machine tool. They include faster calculation times for building 3D toolpath, new adaptive facing machining cycles offering dramatically improved cycle times, an all new operation manager that simplifies the CNC programmers’ job of organizing machining processes and cutting tools, and new feature groups that allow the programmer to more easily manage the machining conditions for a collection of similar part features. The new 2008 stock automation technology allows ESPRIT to maintain awareness of the state of lathe stock at all times during the machining process. After each turning operation is created, ESPRIT will update the stock to reflect the actual remaining material based on the machining cycles and cutting tools used. This stock automation capability allows ESPRIT to automatically manage lead-in and lead-out distances and moves, and eliminates the possibility of gouging material or crashing tools, resulting in improved quality of the part program and significantly reduced programming time and effort. Increased performance and productivity for the lathe programmer are available with the new features in ESPRIT 2008, including new threading cycles with a database of standard thread dimensions, a new cutoff cycle with greater tool control, flexibility for a larger variety of cutting tools, improved material removal and machine simulation for more realistic computer based dry-runs, and the ability to handle an even larger variety of machine configurations (spindles and turrets) in support of today’s advanced multi-tasking and mill-turn machine tools. Among several enhancements to be demonstrated at the show and available in ESPRIT 2008 are significant improvements for milling, turning and wire EDM programming. In addition to increasing the performance of the CAM software, the upgrades reduce the time required to produce part programs while increasing the quality of those programs and helping to reduce machining cycle times.

SHARP is among several semiconductor firms, including the Semiconductor Technology Academic Research Center (STARC) research and development consortium, collaborating with Synopsys to develop new automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) technology that targets small delay defects to further increase the quality of manufacturing tests. SHARP has demonstrated in working silicon that this new small delay defect ATPG technology improves quality and is cost-effective when deployed with DFT MAX to compress the test data. "SHARP believes that test quality is very important, so we are evaluating Synopsys' small delay defect ATPG technology on production designs," said Hiroyuki Shibata, department general manager, LSI Test Engineering Department, Production Center, Large-Scale IC Group at SHARP. "We wanted to apply all the patterns without slowing down the production line or making costly changes to our ATE

infrastructure. We achieved this by reducing the test data volume by 95 percent using DFT MAX to implement scan compression on-chip. We would like to use DFT MAX in our SoC designs to improve quality." Standard stuck-at test patterns are ineffective at detecting many timing-sensitive defects, so semiconductor companies are now using at-speed tests to cover these defects for nanometer processes. Transition-delay testing for complex designs has led to an explosion in the total number of test patterns required to properly test a device. The resulting inflation in both pattern count and test data volume per pattern has increased the time required to test each device, creating bottlenecks in production testing. Working seamlessly within Synopsys' Galaxy™ Design Platform, DFT MAX uses Adaptive Scan technology to substantially reduce the amount of test data required for each test pattern, achieving predictable results with virtually no impact on timing. By avoiding the use of complex sequential state machines for compression/decompression, DFT MAX minimizes the silicon area overhead of compression and alleviates wire congestion that can lead to routing problems during physical implementation. "We welcome SHARP to the growing ranks of DFT MAX users in Japan and look forward to continued collaboration to validate Synopsys' advanced ATPG technologies," said Graham Etchells, director of Test Marketing, Synopsys Implementation Group. "SHARP's remarkable success demonstrates that ultra-high-quality testing is not only feasible, but is also cost-effective when combined with DFT MAX."

Fluid Simulation Reduces Valve Prototype Development Time from 3 Months to 1 Day August 2007

Aerospace valve manufacturer Shaw Aero Devices, Inc., Naples, Florida, saved at least $9000 and three months in prototyping costs by using Flomerics’ EFD.Lab computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to iterate to an optimized design. The CFD results for each iteration provided insights into how the design could be improved. Rob Preble, Project Engineer for Shaw, created a design that provided the required pressure drop without the need to build a single hardware prototype. “CFD simulation dramatically reduced the time needed to meet our customer’s demanding specifications,” Preble concluded. “We moved from the beginning of the project to the development of an acceptable software prototype in only one day.”

Shaw Aero Devices designs, develops and manufactures a wide range of products in the areas of fuel, oil and water/waste systems and components. Shaw’s customer was interested in purchasing a large quantity of a solenoid valve similar to one of their standard products for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The customer specified a pressure drop of 0.75 pounds per square inch (psi) at a flow rate of 4.45 gallons per minute (gpm) while Shaw’s standard valve measured out at 6.09 psi. In the past, this would have required building and testing a series of designs in an effort to eliminate constrictions with no guarantee of success.

Instead, Preble simulated fluid flow within the original standard product design. EFD.Lab reduced the time required to simulate flow by analyzing the model and automatically identifying fluid and solid regions without user interaction. Preble then ran a series of simulations of the original design at flow rates from 1 to 5 gpm and the simulation predicted the pressure drop with an error of less than 10% at every point. Preble then created a series of design iterations, changing each design to reduce pressure

drop guided by the CFD results of the previous iteration. For example, in viewing the cut plot of the pressure gradient of the first design run, Preble noticed that the angled wing seat was causing a significant portion of the pressure drop. In order to address this issue he modeled the new valve with a larger opening below the solenoid poppet and removed the angled valve seat. The CFD simulation showed that this change substantially reduced the pressure drop to 1.09 psi. But it was still too high. Further changes to the design reduced the pressure drop across the valve to an acceptable 0.71 psi. “We had complete confidence in the simulation results because EFD.Lab had provided such an accurate simulation of the original design,” Preble concluded. “Without CFD, this knowledge would have been hard won. We would have had to go through a minimum of three prototypes, more likely several more. Each prototype would have cost $3000 and taken a month to manufacture, build and test. We took our simulation results to the customer and we were awarded the contract to build the valve. We are so confident that the new configuration will work we are not planning on building any prototypes. This application provides an excellent example of how the new generation of easy to use CFD software is helping to dramatically improve the design process at small and medium manufacturers with products that involve fluid flow.”

Simulia: Glass Service Improve BV Reduces Time And Cost of Bottle Blow Molding with Realistic Simulation Solutions from Dassault Systèmes 30 August 2007

Dassault Systèmes (DS) announced that Glass Service Improve BV, a provider of advanced solutions for glass manufacturing, is using professional services and Abaqus Unified Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software from SIMULIA to accelerate and optimize the development process of non-round glass bottle forming.

Glass bottle manufacturers in general, but especially flaconage producers creating complex non-round geometries, are under significant market pressure to produce containers, in a variety of sizes and shapes, quickly and at lower costs. The 3D glass forming analysis method, also applicable to other forming and industrial applications, makes it possible for designers to accurately evaluate the optimum blow mold process in a virtual environment, reducing or eliminating costly physical testing.

“New container designs have traditionally been introduced through a trial-and-error process in a live production environment,” stated Gerard de Leede, managing director, Glass Service Improve BV. “Increased market pressure has made the old process impractical. SIMULIA’s expertise and Abaqus FEA software make it possible for our customers, such as Bormioli Luigi, to save money and shorten time to market for boutique glass designs like perfume bottles.”

“Customer partnerships, innovative methods development and advanced simulation technology are what set us apart in industries where the use of predictive simulation is rapidly increasing,” stated Ken Short, vice president, SIMULIA strategy and marketing. “During a services engagement, our engineering teams work to gain a thorough understanding of our clients’ requirements and processes in order to develop a solution that helps get new products to market reliably and efficiently.”

In collaboration with Glass Service Improve, SIMULIA has developed a methodology that uses an automated remeshing technique to simulate a multistage manufacturing process involving viscous materials that are subjected to high temperatures, large geometry deformation, and complex contact. This methodology is central to Glass Service Improve’s Galileo-Plus product, which uses Abaqus FEA technology to enable designers to reliably simulate the glass forming process from beginning to end.

Small Auto Racing Parts Maker Does Big Business Using SolidWorks Software 29 August 2007

A small New Hampshire company making aftermarket parts for racing cars is using SolidWorks® 3D CAD software to perform like a larger company. “It allows me to play with the big boys and source manufacturing partners anywhere on the planet,” said Hardbar USA founder Gary Hoffman. “I don’t need a staff of 20 people, and I can’t afford millions of dollars in machine tools. But now I can design a great product, push a button, and send SolidWorks 3D CAD files to my partners, whether they’re across town or in California.”

Hardbar USA takes its name from its signature light, strong, and durable harness bars that anchor full-body racing harnesses popular on the Sports Car Club of America racing circuit. SolidWorks software has helped the company develop high-performance brake parts, composite wings, racing seat mounts, camcorder fixtures, and more.

As a former aerospace engineer, Hoffman has worked with virtually all the CAD offerings on the market. He switched to SolidWorks last year because it was the one most of the machine shops in his industry were using. Their choice was affirmed when he first started using it. “It was amazing,” he said. “I realized you could teach yourself.”

Hoffman says SolidWorks software helps him design better products by getting plans right the first time. In fact, saving one or two mistakes on a $5,000 wing mold more than pays for the software. He has refined his accuracy by importing GM’s Corvette® automotive designs into SolidWorks as STEP files and designing all new parts to the proper dimensions. He uses SolidWorks renderings to gauge and generate demand for a product before manufacturing it to avoid investing in products that won’t sell. “The biggest challenge for my business is throughput, and getting it right the first time saves time and money,” Hoffman said.

Having a design for one car in SolidWorks makes it easy to adapt the design with minimal effort to other vehicles. With one click, for example, Hoffman can modify his five-hole Corvette alignment tool for a six-hole Dodge Viper® wheel. He uses the COSMOSXpress™ analysis tool embedded in SolidWorks to run thermal and stress analysis on brake parts for safety and durability. The heat maps help customers understand and appreciate the value of his designs.

His latest SolidWorks-designed product is a Universal Camcorder Mount that, with a twist of an allen wrench, lets drivers capture the drama on the track or the data coming from their instrument panels.

“This story illustrates the value of participating in the worldwide community of SolidWorks users,” Rainer Gawlick, vice president of worldwide marketing for SolidWorks Corporation. “For Gary and many like him, being an entrepreneur requires not only superior products, but finding new and better ways of doing business. The critical mass of SolidWorks users in the racing community, together with the unique capabilities of SolidWorks, help businesses like Hardbar USA thrive.”

Hardbar USA uses authorized SolidWorks reseller CADD Edge for ongoing software training, implementation, and support.

Synopsys, Inc. announced that Tessolve has adopted Synopsys' DFT MAX scan compression solution to reduce the costs of semiconductor testing and diagnostics. DFT MAX automates creation of scan compression circuits on-chip that substantially decrease the amount of data and time required to test complex ASICs. Tessolve selected DFT MAX because it achieved the best test time/test data reduction results and was easiest to embed within the company's existing design-for-test (DFT) and failure analysis flows. "It is very easy to achieve high compression using Synopsys' DFT MAX solution," said Mohit Bansal, director of DFT Engineering at Tessolve. "DFT MAX is a straightforward extension of the standard scan techniques using Synopsys' DFT Compiler and TetraMAX ATPG design flows currently in use at Tessolve. Because TetraMAX supports automated diagnosis of DFT MAX-compressed test patterns, analysis of failed patterns on the ATE can be completed much faster and cost-effectively." Synopsys' DFT MAX solution utilizes Adaptive Scan compression technology to minimize test costs by substantially reducing both test application time and test data volume. By avoiding the use of complex sequential state machines for compression/decompression, DFT MAX disperses test logic throughout the design, alleviating wire-routing congestion and reducing the silicon area overhead cost of compression. TetraMAX® diagnostics automate failure analysis of manufactured parts by identifying circuits that could contribute to mismatches between expected results generated by the TetraMAX automatic test pattern generator (ATPG) and observed responses of the device under test. "Design services firms like Tessolve need an integrated DFT solution that minimizes the design effort as well as tester-related costs," said Graham Etchells, director of marketing, Test Automation at Synopsys. "Because migration to DFT MAX can be accomplished in days instead of months, our customers quickly see tangible benefits from applying more types of test patterns to achieve even higher test quality."
