Its large tactile buttons and logical layout make learning how to use the player quick and easy. The number keypad helps you to navigate complex books and make it easier to add and skip to your bookmarks when revising. Ideal for education, leisure reading with easy navigation by chapter, page or bookmark. Supplied with a button cover which simplifies its use and reduces the buttons available to just those you need.

Items supplied with the Plextalk PTN2 Cross DAISY playerPlextalk PTN2 Cross DAISY playerPower cable (two-piece - one power block and one figure eight cable with mains plug)Button cover - supplied attached to playerManufacturer's pocket guideManufacturer's instruction CD in DAISY, text and Word document formats.

OrientationThe Plextalk PTN2 Cross is sold with its button cover attached so not all of the buttons will be visible. This orientation assumes the cover has been removed. To remove it, place the unit on a table with the buttons facing upwards and the round ridged grille (speaker) in the top right corner. On both sides, near to the front are clips which hold the cover in place and by pulling these outwards slightly will allow the front of the cover to lift so it can be easily removed.

TopThere are 27 rubber buttons on the top. There is a column of four buttons on the left side, which are from top to bottom as follows: oval shaped Menu button used to access the main menu, a diamond shaped Bookshelf button used to switch between CD, SD and USB memory, another diamond shaped Goto button used for page and heading navigation and the last, triangular button is the Bookmark button used for bookmark navigation, insertion and deletion.

To the right of these buttons and located centrally on the unit is a block of 12 grey buttons generally called the number keypad. It is laid out exactly like a push button telephone keypad with four rows of three buttons. The first row has numbers 1, 2 and 3, the second row has numbers 4, 5 and 6, the third row has numbers 7, 8 and 9 and the fourth row has the Star button,

0 button and the Hash button. The number 5 button has a small raised dot on it to help you locate it. The Hash button, which is located at the bottom right of the number keypad, is used for confirming, so it will be called the Enter button throughout this guide. Similarly, the Star button, which is located at the bottom left of the number keypad, is used to cancel, and will be called the Cancel button.

Some of the buttons have secondary functions and these are listed below:

Number 2 = Arrow Up or CancelNumber 4 = Arrow Left or Move BackNumber 6 = Arrow Right or Move ForwardNumber 8 = Arrow Down or EnterNumber 9 = Backup files or Move filesStar = UndoHash = Redo

Above the number keypad is a row of three rocker buttons, which are up and down controls. From left to right they are: Tone up and down button, the centre button is the Volume Up and down button and is larger than the other two and is black in colour. To the right is the Speed Up and Down button.

Underneath the number keypad is a row of three buttons. The black centre button is rectangular in shape and has a distinctive recess for easy location. This is the Play/Stop button. The two buttons either side of the Play/Stop button are semi-circular in shape and on the left is the Rewind button and on the right is the Fast Forward button.

The last group of buttons on the top surface are the five buttons on the right hand side arranged in a reversed c shape. The first button is to the right of the number 6 button and is the oval shaped Information button. This is used to get the information of the DAISY book, audio files and text files. Press and hold this button to hear the current date and time. To the right of this button is the small round Sleep timer button. Below this button is the sunken round Power button - used for power on/off, which also has a tactile indented line in the case to help mark its position. Below this is the square black eject button, which again is slightly recessed from the casing.

Between the eject button and the fast forward button are two triangular shaped rocker buttons, which is the Previous/Forward title button. Similar

The file has been created in DAISY 3 text only format and uses the built-in synthetic speech.

Differences between plain text and HTML filesAlthough this guide refers to both plain text and HTML files as Text files, you should note the difference between these two types of file as it affects the navigation options you have. Plain Text files will only have the structure that is contained in its paragraphs, sentences, words and characters. There will be no additional structure such as headings. HTML files will have paragraphs, sentences, words and characters navigation but might also have heading level information if this has been coded into the original HTML document. If the HTML file has headings, you will be able to use these to enhance your navigation in these files.

Note: If the HTML file contains headings at multiple levels, you will only be offered a single level for heading navigation. In other words, all headings in an HTML file will be treated as Level 1 headings.

Navigating by percentageText files do not allow you to navigate directly to headings, pages or groups, like DAISY books. Consequently these options are not available to you when you press the GoTo button. However, the player does allow you to navigate by a percentage of the file that has been played. To navigate by percentage, do the following:

press the GoTo button once. The guide speech will say "Go to percent" type in a percentage between 0% and 100% and press the Enter button the player will move the playback position to that position in the Text file if you accidentally enter a number larger than 100%, the player will take

you to the end of the Text file.

Moving to the beginning or end of a Text fileMoving quickly to the beginning or end of the Text file is very useful.

To move to the beginning of a Text file, do the following:

press the GoTo button once. The guide speech will say "Go to percent" press the Number 0 button followed by the Enter button and the playing

position will move to the start of the current text file. The guide speech will say "0 percent. Beginning of title"

after a short pause, playback will start automatically from the beginning.

To move to the end of a Text file, do the following:

press the GoTo button once. The guide speech will say "Go to percent" press the Number buttons "1", "0", "0" followed by the Enter button and

the playing position will move to the end of the current text file. The guide speech will say "100 percent. End of title". Playback will stop automatically

if you accidentally enter a number larger than 100%, the player will take you to the end of the Text file.

Navigating by paragraph, sentence, word or characterAs mentioned above, a Text file will always give you the four navigation options "Paragraph", "Sentence", "Word" and "Character". These options will automatically appear on the Navigation menu when you access this type of file.

To navigate by any of these options, the process is identical as follows:

use the Number 2 or 8 buttons to select your preferred navigation method i.e. paragraph, sentence, word or character

use the Number 4 button to jump back in the file by the selected amount. If you reach the start of the file, the player will say "Beginning of title"

use the Number 6 button to jump forward in the file by the selected amount. If you reach the end of the file, the player will say "End of title".

Navigating by level (HTML files only)For HTML files that have been coded with headings, you will be given an additional navigation option on the Navigation menu. This will be called "Level". This differs from navigating in a DAISY title because all headings, regardless of their level, will be accessed through one entry on the Navigation menu. For example, if an HTML file contains Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 headings, there will only be a single option on the Navigation menu called "Level". You will not be able to navigate by a specific level.

To navigate by level, do the following:

use the Number 2 or 8 buttons to select the "Level" option on the Navigation menu

use the Number 4 button to jump back in the file to the previous heading. If you reach the start of the file, the player will say "Beginning of title"

use the Number 6 button to jump forward in the file to the next heading. If you reach the end of the file, the player will say "End of title".

Playback modeWhen playing Text files, provided playback mode is "Normal playback" only.

Normal playback - this option is the factory default setting. It plays through the title and stops when finished. The player will say "End of title". Pressing the Play/Stop button at this stage will start playback from the beginning again.

numbered bookmarks - You can add up to 10,000 Numbered bookmarks. Each bookmark is assigned a unique number in the range 1 to 65,000. If you try to exceed the 10,000 limit, the oldest bookmark is automatically deleted before the new one is created

resume bookmarks - For every title, album or text file, the current playing location will be stored, so playback can be resumed from that location the next time the title, album or text file is used.

Please do not throw items marked with this symbol in your bin. Recycle your electricals and electronic devices free at your local recycling centre. Search for your nearest recycling centre by visiting www.recyclenow.com.

Why recycle?Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK’s fastest growing type of waste.

Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and human health.

RNIB are proud to support your local authority in providing local recycling facilities for electrical equipment.

To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with this symbol) in your bin.

What is WEEE?The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items.

How are we helping? In the UK, distributors including retailers must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. As a responsible retailer, we have met the requirements placed on us by financially supporting the national network of WEEE recycling centres established by local authorities. This is achieved through membership of the national Distributor Take-back scheme (DTS).
