Attendance
3 tardies = detention4 tardies = referral5 tardies = drop-fail4 truancies = drop-fail
*Make sure to have your parents call in excused absences within 72 hours (3 days) of absence so you are not marked truant.
Assignments I do not accept late work at all unless there was an excused
absence. See syllabus for timeline for make-ups. Important: an excused absence does not allow you to
turn in a long-term assignment that you already knew about late. Send it in with a friend, e-mail it, make sure it’s on turnitin.com, etc.
When you return to school from being absent, you should have all assignments with you that were assigned prior to when you were gone, and have made a concerted effort to complete what was assigned while you were gone, as it is all on the website and it’s not advisable to get behind.
Any writing assignments that need to be submitted to turnitin.com will get a ZERO if not submitted there, even if you turn in a hard copy. The reverse is true as well- I need hard copies of many assignments as well as submission to turnitin.com (make sure you listen carefully about what types of submission are required for each assignment).
If your assignment is late to one place or the other, you will receive half-credit, barring a true emergency.
Grading
Summative assessments -- IB assessments, in-class essays, vocab tests, reading quizzes -- will be worth 65% of your grade
Formative assessments -- classwork, homework, seminars, class participation, and formative grade submissions (your self-evaluation of your work during each unit with unit folder submission) -- will be worth 35% of your grade.
Class participation protocol: you will receive a holistic score out of 50 each quarter relating to your attendance, level of effort and preparation, and willingness to participate.
Communication Check Q (formerly Zangle) for grades. I also have a TeacherWeb page where you can
access daily agendas and homework assignments, documents, check on due dates, and find useful links. See syllabus for the direct link or access it from nphs.org<Academics<English<Alana Bond.
Turnitin.com: submission of papers, discussion boards, peer review, etc.
Remind App I will also be sharing documents with the class on
Google Drive--you have a school account that you will familiarize yourself with (learn.conejousd.net); instructions for access on school website.
Old-fashioned e-mail (see syllabus for my district e-mail or use school Google e-mail—we are all in the same network there and that is where I will send group e-mails)

Day 1 Writing exercise/icebreaker
There are times in our lives when we are inspired. Take 10-15 minutes and write about how and why a text---written or visual (book, movie, article, painting, photograph, essay, etc.) has inspired you to learn more, write more, read more, or live differently.
Then we will go around and say our names and do a quick share about this.
Day 2 icebreaker
Tell us your name and something fun, worthwhile, or terrible you did this summer. Please explain why it was fun, worthwhile, or terrible!
