Collaborating with artists across many disciplines she brings together a wealth of knowledge to the creative sector. Her artistic expression is primarily through the medium of woven tapestry. Welcome to Roscommon’s Culture Night and our programme of FREE EVENTS for all the family.

ALL EVENTS ARE FREE! Some venues may require advance booking.

TRAD MUSIC ATHLEAGUE10pm until late Traditional Music Session in the Angling Centre, Athleague, Co. Roscommon starting at 10pm and going on till late. ‘ONCE UPON A TIME - BUT NOW AS WELL’. EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY VISUAL ARTIST ANNE RIGNEY5pm – 9pmAnne will be showing a selection of her paintings spanning the last twenty years in her Kitchen /Gallery on Culture Night between 5pm and 9pm. Her kitchen is an old fashioned stone walled room and is perfect as a temporary gallery.

CATTLE RAIDING ON A GRAND SCALE ‘RECOUNTING THE TALES IN THE MANNER INTENDED’From 7.30pmFor Culture Night this year we will deliver a spoken-word recital of the great Irish literary epic ‘Cattle Raid of Cooley’, incorporating many of the supporting remscéla or foretales, all in the environs of where these stories are said to have taken place, at the ancient Connacht capital of Cruachan Aí.

‘ARTS CABARET’ 6pm - 10pm Arts Cabaret brings together professional and amateur artists, to showcase their work in public spaces, work such as performance, music, poetry, video, comedy, storytelling and visual arts. LIBRARY EVENTSSUMMERS STARS READING CHALLENGE 2017 AND STORYTELLING IN THE COUNTY LIBRARY, ROSCOMMON TOWN6.15pm– 7.15pm Presentation of Medals and Certificates for the Summer Stars programme at 6.15pm. This will be followed by Storytelling with Danielle Allison for 7–10 year olds.

SUMMER STARS AWARDS CEREMONY AND STORYTELLING IN BOYLE BRANCH LIBRARY6.pm– 8pm Local storyteller, Chris Thompson will be handing out the awards for this year’s national Summer Stars Reading Challenge at 6.15pm. This will be followed at 6.30pm by Chris providing one of her highly interactive, delightful puppet-based storytelling sessions for slightly older children (7-10 year olds). As well as a great time for the children, this will also provide parents with a wonderful opportunity to gain a few tips in telling stories to their children. The library itself will stay open to the public till 8pm.

STORY TIME AND SUMMER STARS READING CHALLENGE 2017 PRESENTATION IN THE BALLAGHADERREEN BRANCH LIBRARY6.pm – 8pmOn Culture Night there will be Story Time at 7pm in the Ballaghaderreen Branch Library followed by the Summer Star Reading Challenge Presentation at 7.30pm. Medals and certificates will be presented to children who participated in the Summer Star Children’s Reading Challenge, by Roscommon Senior Footballer, Sean McDermott.

A SESSION IN THE CASTLEREA BRANCH LIBRARY7pm – 8.30pmOn Culture Night there will be a Session in the Castlerea Library with the local Castlerea Branch of Ceoltas. There will be local musicians and dancers and some guest entertainers on the night.

ROSCOMMON ARTS CENTRE1.CLAIMING SPACES: PRIMARY SCHOOL VISUAL ART INSTALLATION5.00pmArtist Anna Spearman will work with two primary schools to create work for this new installation. Families are invited to join us early on Culture Night evening for the great unveiling at 5pm. All welcome and the exhibition continues throughout October.

2.ARTIST TALK: NAOMI DRAPER6.00pm Naomi Draper’s multi-disciplinary practice explores the fragility of our built and natural environment, investigating what defines space and how it is lived and activated by humans and non-humans. As part of our Culture Night celebrations, Naomi will discuss her latest exhibition “Florilegium” currently on show in the gallery.

3.SING SOCIAL: 7.00pmOur first ever “Sing Social” happens on Culture Night in the theatre foyer. Come along and sing along to well known tunes with our Sing Social Butterfly Michele Feeney. No singing experience necessary! All welcome.

STROKESTOWN PARK HOUSE7pm – 8pmA screening of a thought provoking documentary ‘Ireland’s Great Hunger and the Irish Diaspora’, directed by Rebecca Abbott, in the National Famine Museum in Strokestown Park House, Strokestown at 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The film won an Emmy earlier this year.

INSIDE CRAFT 4pm - 6pmINSIDE [CRAFT] is a new craft tourism experience positioning the area of Cavan, Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon as a region of creativity. Through INSIDE [CRAFT] projects our region’s craft and creative businesses become more visible to you, the visitor, to experience craft, to meet the maker, support our small enterprise owners and to purchase authentic, quality products for yourself or as a gift.

On Culture Night INSIDE [CRAFT] will stage a Pop-Up Retail Event at the beautiful location of Louth Key Forest Park. During the even-ing you will be able to meet makers and hear about the inspirations for their products. The pop-up will continue over the weekend to Sunday.
