Please listen to the video of America. What do you think the words means? What is it talking about? Let’s read the words of the first verse together and

figure it out!

Define- Tis, Thee, Liberty, Freedom, My Fathers, Pilgrims Pride

Now that we’ve figured out what the songs means, let’s see if we can learn the first verse together!

Did you know that even though Reverend Samuel Francis Smith wrote the lyrics to America (My Country Tis of Thee) in 1831, the melody

was written many years before that? The melody was claimed to have been written in London 1740. It was originally call God Save the King and

Do you know what the name our national anthem is?

Did you know that the words to the Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key as he watched a battled through the window of the enemy ship he was being held prisoner on. When he woke-up in the morning, the American flag was still waving. He was so inspired that wrote down a poem. This poem was later put

to music became our National Anthem.

Imagine that you are in Francis Scott Key’s shoes. What do you think you would have seen through the window on the ship during the bombardment of Fort William McHenry? Please draw what

you are imagining.
