Messiah Lutheran Church seeks to be a welcoming community for all people.
This includes people of every race, ability, sexual orientation and identity, ethnic background,
economic grouping, religious affiliation, and political persuasion.
We do this simply because God created all people in God’s own image
and Christ Jesus came so all people might have abundant and eternal life.
We may not always be as welcoming as we should be,
but this is our intention—all are welcome!

Hildegarde Johnson Music Scholarships Awarded Two Hildegarde Johnson Music Scholarships have been awarded for 2017. Aliina Maki-Warne,
a 12 year old sixth grader from Marquette, will use her award to pay for private flute lessons this
summer. Madison Balding, a 12 year old seventh grader also from Marquette, will use her
scholarship toward the cost of attending Blue Lake Music Camp. Madison is a singer who has
been studying voice for the last three years.
This is the first Hildegarde Johnson Scholarship for both girls. Congratulations to these two
students! We look forward to them sharing their learning with the congregation in the coming
year. ____________________________

¡Gracias!
Thank you for attending my fundraiser recital last Sunday. I really appreciate everyone's
support as I prepare for traveling to Colombia next month. I also want to thank the members of
the Global Mission team who provided refreshments and helped at the reception, and Mike Hill
who helped with the sound. I'm looking forward to visiting Luz y Vida in a few short weeks, and
I'm excited to share my experience with all of you when I get back. --Eric Banitt

honor on June 18, at Faith Lutheran, Calumet. You are certainly invited. However, even if

Community Meals--Can You Help?
If you've ever attended any of Messiah's potlucks, soup suppers or monthly community meals,
you know that Messiah has no shortage of excellent cooks! We are thankful for everyone who
shares the gift of hospitality in this way and makes Messiah a welcoming place to be.
Our community meals have been held on the first Wednesday of the month since 2005! As the
name states, the meal is open to everyone in the community and is served every month except
July. Responsibility for the meal rotates among several teams so a team only needs to work
two or three times a year. Each team includes people who plan and cook the meal, people to
set up and serve, and people to clean up afterwards. Those who are involved in this ministry
find it a fun and rewarding way to show hospitality and make new friendships.
If you are interested in helping with community meals, please contact Inga in the church
office. If you are interested but not able to commit to being a regular member of a team, you
may volunteer to be on a list of substitutes. Thank you for stepping up to keep this great
Messiah tradition going!

Quilting Help Needed—No Experience Necessary!
Every Thursday from 9 am to 2:30 pm, Messiah's quilters faithfully gather in Magnuson Hall to
make quilts that are shipped all over the world through Lutheran World Relief. Stop by
sometime and thank them--or better yet join them in their work! There's a job for everyone no
matter what your skill level is. Through a simple combination of fabric and thread, you can
reach out to people in their time of greatest need with a strong message of hope — you are not
alone.
Even if you can only work for an hour or two, your help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Compassion Cases for Foster Care Kids
Messiah’s Marquette Area MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is working on a service project for
the month of May! We’re building Compassion Cases for local children in foster care. Foster
care transition is inevitable & sometimes quick and unfortunately, at times, trash bags are still
used to transfer items. Our Compassion Cases goal for Marquette County is to eliminate the
need for trash bags and instead send our local foster kids a message of love, support and hope.
Please join our Compassion Cases service project for Foster Closet of Michigan as we collect
150 new duffel bags, suitcases & diaper bags along with basic items during May 2017. Needed
items are listed on the table in the Narthex where you can sign up now to bring new items for
donation. Our MOPS moms are also working with other churches and businesses to collect
items. Messiah is a drop-off site and a bin is located in the Narthex. For more information on
this project contact: Valerie Beaudoin at 236-3334 or email: [email protected].
For more information about the Foster Closet of Michigan visit: fosterclosetofmichigan.org or
FACEBOOK: Foster Closet of Michigan - Marquette County Branch.

Stewardship for Children
How can we teach our children to be good stewards of all that God gives to us, to be caretakers
of that which belongs first to God?
The Stewardship Team recalled that our theme for the last several years has been "Sharing the
Harvest." To encourage the congregation's children to use and share all that God gives us--the
fruit of the earth, our time, talents and treasure--we enlisted the Sunday School coordinators
and teachers to help create an herb garden. The children have planted pots of seed, which
they will tend, water and transplant when temperatures warm and the ground is ready. The
garden will be located next to the church. When the herbs have grown, they will be harvested
and dried and will be used for a pasta sauce to be served at the October community meal.
We thank Sunday School Coordinators Holly Muscoe and Gina Fortin and are very grateful to
Louise Anderson for contributing her help and gardening expertise. Share the Harvest! That's
what God calls us to do.

Messiah Stewardship Team

Elder Errands
This is a program created by the NMU Pre-Med Club. They are offering services to elderly in
the Marquette community, free of charge. The program was designed primarily for grocery
shopping, but other options could be discussed. If you are an elder or if you know an elder who
would like a little extra help with their errands, please contact Alex at 906-869-5970 for more
information. The pre-med students are looking forward to lending you a helping hand!

Volunteer Thank-You Dinner
"God's work, our hands." Many hands make light work, and there are many hands at work in
the Lord's vineyard! So with “Many & Much thanks” for all that our volunteers do to answer
God's call to love, the Stewardship team is hosting a dinner Wednesday, May 31 at 5:30 pm.
All volunteers are welcome to come. We ask that you please RSVP to Inga by Monday, May
22. We hope you'll join us! :)

Letter for Pledges for Jairo Suarez
Many of you will remember Jairo Suarez the pastor from Caracoli, who visited us in October
2015. He has an 18-year-old son, also named Jairo, who is coming to Marquette to attend a
one-semester English Immersion program at NMU, during the fall semester of 2017. The total
cost of his tuition, fees and books is approximately $7,000. Three thousand of that amount has
been procured.
He has not yet been accepted by NMU, but it appears that will be done soon. Whether he will
be able to get a visa is questionable. Without finances in place, he will probably not qualify for
one.
Therefore, we are asking members to consider making a pledge toward funding his time with
us. Housing, meals and in-city transport have been arranged. So, our goal is $4,000.
This is an incredible opportunity we have as a congregation to welcome and surround a child of
God with loving support. In addition, it will deepen our relationships as brothers and sisters in
Christ with Jairo, his family, and the people of Colombia.
We ask you to make your pledge dependent upon Jairo’s acceptance to NMU and his receiving
a visa. When these have occurred, we will ask you to make your contribution.
Thank you for your consideration. If interested, please contact the church office via phone at
225-1119 or email [email protected] or [email protected]. We would need
your name, phone number, email & amount of pledge if Jairo is accepted to NMU program and
receives his visa. Thank you, we appreciate your consideration.

Confirmation
This Sunday, May 14, at the 10:30 am service, two Messiah youth will affirm their faith through
the rite of Confirmation. The two students are Ashlee Blom, daughter of Marc and Becky Blom,
and Savannah Methner, daughter of Susan Methner. You are invited to a reception for them
during the coffee hour between services or after the 10:30 worship.
On Thursday, June 1 at 6:00 pm, a dinner will be served in their honor in Magnuson Hall.
Beginning about 6:45 pm or 7:00 pm, each student will read her faith statement to those
attending the banquet and we will support them with prayer and in song. All of Messiah is
welcome to attend the banquet and hear the confirmands share their faith.

NORTH FOURTH Youth Outreach Program Update
Thank you for the donations that have been coming in. North Fourth is starting to take shape.
We no longer need book shelves or desks but we could still use a medium sized folding table
and some rugs/carpets (5x8 or 4x6). We also need school supplies such as pens, pencils,
paper, calculators, crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissors, and rulers. We can also take
monetary donations and purchase things ourselves as well. Thanks for all your support in this
mission.

Poverty and Darkness into Light
Two booklets are available on the Welcome Table: Poverty & Faith and Darkness into Light.
The Poverty and Faith booklet contains each message dealing with that theme offered during
worship on Lenten Wednesdays. The messages came from Valerie Beaudoin (Living in
Poverty), Erik Bergh (Poverty and Employment), Sarah Kemppainen (Poverty and Education),
Rose Young (Poverty and Mental Illness/Substance Abuse) and Pastor Allan Johnson (Living
Together as Rich and Poor in Christ’s Body). These messages explore the reality of poverty in
our community and struggle with the Church’s response to poverty among and around us.
Jesus said, “The poor you will always have with you,” and that he came to “bring good news to
the poor.” How is the Church to be good news to the poor?
Please feel free to pick up this booklet and read/reflect on these messages.
Darkness into Light booklet contains sermons by Pastor Dave and Pastor Amanda during Holy
Week. The following sermons are included:
Palm/Passion Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday (two sermons), the Easter Vigil, and
Easter Sunday (two sermons). You are invited to pick up this booklet and re-visit the texts and
messages of Holy Week, which are always applicable to our lives.

Vacation Bible School
Attention! We are now looking for volunteers to help out with Vacation Bible School this year! It
will be held July 10-14 and we are looking for help with all aspects, whether your gifts include
making snacks, leading activities, hanging out with kids, setting up or cleaning up, helping with
publicity, or something we haven’t even thought of, we are always looking for people willing to
help. Registration for both volunteers and kids is online at www.myvbs.org/messiahlutheranmqt/
or you may pick up a form on the welcome table. If you're new to this ministry, you can check
out Messiah's Facebook page or website to see pictures from past VBS events. You can also
speak to Deacon Lisa Johnson if you have questions.

They Are Coming!
Those of you who were here in 2013 will probably remember the haunting sounds of “We Are
Going” sung by the Agape Choir from Azania Front Lutheran Church in Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania. Azania Front is our Companion Congregation and the choir’s visit helped to forge a
strong bond with Messiah. In June of 2015, 10 members of our congregation visited them in
Dar es Salaam and were shown wonderful hospitality, renewed old friendships and kindled new
ones.
Now it’s our turn to host them again. We have invited a delegation to visit us in early October,
2017. The dates are not set yet, but the plan is to have them join us in worship on October 8
and 15.
We need host families who will welcome them and help them experience Messiah hospitality.
Our guests will have a busy schedule during the day, and hosts will be responsible for providing
a place to sleep and breakfast and dinner most days. Communication will not be a problem
since English is the language of commerce in Tanzania even though the official language is
Swahili. Consider this opportunity to engage with our companions from across the globe and
let the Global Mission committee or anyone in the church office know if you are interested in
hosting. It will be a true blessing to you!

named in the congregation’s prayers. Please obtain permission from the person to list his/her
name in the bulletin. In order to keep the list up to date and manageable in size, we will list
each person for one month, after which the name will be removed. If at that point, you would
like to continue listing the person, please call the church office or speak to one of the pastors.
