Term 3
It has been a very cold and wintery start to the Term. Thank goodness it has been very busy which has kept the students
and staff warm. Last week saw Sam Rice, Tiffany Bussem-Jorgensen and Lochlan Flanagan participate in the State
Cross Country. All three competed very well and tried their very best. On Thursday and Friday last week, 19 Year 10
students participated in the Pre-Driver Ed program in Charlton. From all accounts the students had a great time and
learnt and experienced a range of driving skills and techniques. The Year 8 students went to Charlton this Wednesday
for their NCTTC Orientation day. It is a great opportunity to see what the NCTTC has to offer so that they select their
subjects for next year, as each form group attends the NCTTC for one semester throughout the year.
Course Counselling
Course Counselling has begun. The Year 11s have had their interviews this week and the Year 10s should have booked an
appointment for next week. The Year 9s will have their Course Counselling interviews from Tuesday 9th August to
Thursday 11th August. Letters will be sent home to parents with details and instructions.
Timetable Changes
There have been a number of changes to staffing this term with some class swaps. This has been due to unforeseeable
staff illnesses. The decisions have been made with the best interest of the students in mind, especially the VCE students.
The changes are as follows:
•Miss Lonergan will be picking up Year 12 HHD and Year 11 Psychology until the end of the year.
•Miss Upton (on her return in a number of weeks) will be picking up 7A Science and 9A Science until the end of the
year.
•Yr 12 Food Technology will be assisted by Claire Ison from Wycheproof who will be coming into cook and complete
assessments with the Year 12s until Ms Upton returns.
•Mrs Feeny is still replacing Ms Bachelor for the moment.
Please contact me if you have any concerns.
Reports & Parent Teacher Interviews
Reports have all been posted out to parents. If you have any concerns please contact your child’s Year Level Coordinator
or myself.
Parent Opinion Survey
You may have been randomly selected to complete a Parent Opinion Survey which will be in the mail shortly. Each year
the school conducts an opinion survey of 15 per cent of the school community. Parents are randomly selected to partici-
pate and we use the information to inform and direct our future school planning and improvement. The survey is de-
signed to take no more than 20 minutes to complete and your feedback and opinions play an important role in making our
school the best it can possibly be. Please be assured that your responses are completely confidential. The survey is con-
ducted anonymously and it is important to us that you complete the survey as honestly as possible. I ask you to take the
time to complete the survey as your opinions are important to us and will contribute to the future management and or-
ganisation of our school.
Labelling of school clothes
Please ensure that you name your child’s school clothes, especially jumpers and jackets. We have quite a number of items
in lost property. Also a reminder students are not to wear hoodies during school hours.

for this time of year. Tiffany competed in the 15
Years Girls 3km race, there were 84 competitors in
her race. Tiffany ran a great time of 11:45 minutes
and placed 29th overall, which is a tremendous ef-
fort. There were 81 competitors in Sam’s and Loch-

SPOTLIGHT ON…
Respectful
Relationships Last Friday I attended ‘The Mental Health and Wellbeing of Young People’ conference in Melbourne run by
Generation Next. The day was a long one, with 12 speakers talking about wide ranging issues that affect young
people: racism, digital citizenship, suicide, self-harm, radicalisation, online gaming, bigorexia in boys and resili-
ence…but by far the most influential was titled ‘Teaching boys respectful relationships’ delivered by Dr Justin
Coulson.
Justin introduced the idea of the ‘gender straightjacket’ a belief that boys can get trapped in. This idea is that
boys have to be stable, stoic and independent, they must take risks and be brave, they should be cool and tough-
en up. This idea is perpetuated by our culture. Culture is the cumulative behaviour of a group – and the gender
straight jacket reinforces our culture of masculinity. If boys digress from this boy code, they can be isolated. In
short, boys are told ‘Be a man, don’t be like a girl!’.
Current statistics show that 1 in 3 women aged 15 years and over are the victim of physical or sexual violence –
this is an alarming statistic! So what can we do? Justin outlined 5 areas of our culture that need to change:
1) Entitlement
2) Thinking we are better than others
3) Playing down disrespectful behaviour
4) Thinking it’s okay to be aggressive because he’s a boy
5) Victim blaming.
A big change can be made in just the way we talk about masculinity, for example….
Have you ever thought or said….. What a boy might think…
“Man up!” Men need to be tough
“Stop acting like a girl” I’m too soft, only girls have emotions
“Who wears the pants?” I should be in control of the relationship
“She has you under the thumb” She’s in control of me
“You’re so whipped” I shouldn’t value what my girlfriend wants
to do.
