NEC Convention Update

Our 2018 convention is shaping up to be another great event. Mark your calendars and join us at the Sheraton Hartford South Hotel in Rocky Hill, CT, from March 16 -18, 2018 – It’s being held on St. Patrick’s Day weekend! Speakers – We have speakers coming from many locations this year, from Canada, to Florida, Colorado to Virginia! We welcome first time NEC speakers Jim Cumming (Canada), Christine Keys (DC), Kyle Piller (LA), Karl Trochu (FL), Mike Tuccinardi (CO), and Emily Voigt (NY), and welcome back Adam Harris (CT), Shane Linder (VA), Richard Pierce (MA), and Kris Weinhold (MD). Speaker Sponsors – Speaker sponsorships are available for $100.00 each. If your aquarium club, organization, or company would like to sponsor a speaker, please send payment to [email protected] . Speaker sponsors will be thanked on the speaker page on our website, in the convention booklet, and during the convention itself in signage and in the speaker introductions. Please consider sponsoring one of our 2018 convention speakers! Hospitality Room – David and Janine Banks are our Hospitality Room Chairmen. I know they are working on this year’s hospitality sponsor. Who will it be? Will we have green beer as part of the hospitality room? Vendors – We have already heard from several vendors that they want to come to our convention, including returning vendors as well as new vendors! Our vendor room will be hopping, so make sure to plan on visiting all our vendor tables. Nancy Villars/Hallgring, our Vendor Chairman, will be contacting all the vendors from last year, as well as any new vendors who are interested in joining. Donors and Sponsors - Barbara Romeo is our Donor and Sponsor Chairman. If you wish to make a product donation, or be a Gold, Silver or Bronze sponsor of our convention, please contact her at [email protected] .

Each year, we are treated to some amazing cichlids, and this year will continue this wonderful experience. Publicity – Ted Coletti has been promoting our “Green Convention” and our speaker line-up. The responses by hobbyists have been very exciting! More News – More updates coming soon. Check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Northeast-Council-of-Aquarium-Societies-NEC-243913172321/ and at our website www.northeastcouncil.org . Navigating the NEC Website Calendar & Upcoming Events

Have you looked at the NEC web calendar lately? It is getting jammed packed with NEC member club events. Below is an example of how to navigate the site using the month of October to demonstrate a monthly calendar view, the NAS’s October auction as an example of an auction view and GCAS’s monthly meeting as a typical event view that has a speaker program. See all the events on the calendar below. A green line represents an auction, a brown line is a meeting, a red line is a fish show (including a bowl show). One-day events have a yellow background while multi-day events have a blue background. A particular event can be accessed from the calendar by clicking on the day.

Page 17:  · Please consider sponsoring one of our 2018 convention ... it’s a sales program for fish club auctions. The demo is available as well as the program in a zip file. ... Tropic

17

When you click on NAS’s auction on October 1st, the window opens and you view the following screen:

Under NAS Fall Auction you are instructed to view the auction flyer. Blue lettering represents a link. Therefore if you click on “Norwalk Aquarium Society (NAS)”, this will lead to NAS’s website. If you click under “downloadable material” this is the NAS auction flyer.

Page 18:  · Please consider sponsoring one of our 2018 convention ... it’s a sales program for fish club auctions. The demo is available as well as the program in a zip file. ... Tropic

18

As you scroll down you will see the address of the auction and expanded map:

Now lets look at GCAS’s October 4th meeting. Click on GCAS meeting and the following window is viewed:

Page 19:  · Please consider sponsoring one of our 2018 convention ... it’s a sales program for fish club auctions. The demo is available as well as the program in a zip file. ... Tropic

19

The program begins at 19:30 (7:30 PM) and the title is “Discus”. The speaker is James Perrenod. Notice the blue lettering below. Let’s click on his name (see next page).

Page 20:  · Please consider sponsoring one of our 2018 convention ... it’s a sales program for fish club auctions. The demo is available as well as the program in a zip file. ... Tropic

20

This is James Perronod’s speaker page. Please note Mr. Perrenod has presented 2 programs regarding discus that we have in our database. If you would like to contact Mr. Perrenod to present at your club, please contact the NEC web administrator and if we will contact him regarding your request.

If we go back to the October calendar, you can change the view to only show auctions, meetings, fish shows, etc. by changing the “event type” at the top of the calendar. See screen on next page.

Page 21:  · Please consider sponsoring one of our 2018 convention ... it’s a sales program for fish club auctions. The demo is available as well as the program in a zip file. ... Tropic

You can also change the view from monthly to week, day, or even year. So we encourage you to browse the NEC website, there is a ton of information! If there is information missing about your NEC member club or NEC member club events, please contact Barbara Romeo at mailto:[email protected] and we will correct. Remember to inform Barbara about your club events by the 10th of each month to ensure the information is shared in the NEC newsletter and at the NEC website.

Monthly Meeting

“Cyprinids" by Bob Bock

In this talk, Bob surveys the cyprinids, a vast group of fishes native

to North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. He offers tips on caring for cyprinids in aquaria, reviews field studies on spawning behaviors of North American and European cyprinids, then applies these findings to breeding barbs, danios, rasboras and other cyprinid species in the home aquarium Bob Bock has been collecting and keeping fish since he was 7 years old, when he brought home two mummichog from the Hackensack River Meadowlands of New Jersey. Bob likes writing and speaking about aquarium fish and belongs to all the Washington, D.C. area's freshwater aquarium societies. He is past president of the North American Native Fishes Association and wrote the "Meet the Hobbyist" column of Tropical Fish Hobbyist. Cyprinids are his main interest, but he has also bred sunfish, cichlids, corydoras and brochis, livebearers, loaches, and killifish. When he's not busy in his fishroom, Bob likes collecting native fishes. Every two years, he leads the native fishes collecting trip for the Potomac Valley Aquarium Society's All Aquarium Catfish Convention
