I explained that each individual is a child of God and while the world will judge us according to our worldly achievements, our inner hearts can rest assured in the steady knowledge that despite worldly measures for which we will be equipped and prepared, we do have a God who considers our lives precious and who sees our worth as being far more than we can ever possibly imagine – more than the birds of the air or the lilies of the field. Congratulations to our teachers in Junior Primary who carefully prepared the girls for the production while enabling them all to also have fun. The theme of visiting planet Earth and enjoying the seasons and creation (from the point of view of two aliens who were actually two Year 6 girls in green alien disguise) was amusing and gave much scope for all our girls in Junior Primary to take to the stage in colourful costumes and strong singing voices. As we return to Term 4, our staff will be planning operational responses to the strategic framework that Council and Executive produced in response to the salient points raised by the community consultative surveys conducted earlier this year. The process has been continuing behind the scenes and it is my pleasure to put the whole document together for presentation to our community by the start of next year. I am confident that it is a Strategic Plan that has embraced aspirational 21st century thinking and is contextually relevant for our community focusing authentically on ‘what is best for our girls?’ I look forward to revealing the final product to you early next year. Dear College Families

Welcome back to Term 4 and life back at the College!

I hope that you were able to take time to regenerate and relax over this recent term break. I realise that our Year 12s would have been pacing their time carefully between study and breaks as this term is an important term for them with examinations and graduation at hand. At the end of last term, I reminded the girls at the senior school assembly that while the world expects a great deal from us which is always the way of things, to remember that because they were created for a purpose and are loved for just who they are, that they need to hold fast to the fact that they ‘measured up’ the day they were born, even before they had accomplished anything. On the last Saturday of the end of term I had the opportunity to present an address and to spend time with members of the LAMPAS group in our community. It was lovely to chat with PLC community members of past parents, collegians and teachers. Our Junior Primary Concert on the Thursday in the last week of term was also exceptionally well performed by our younger members of the student body. PLC Newsletter 2

Anger is one of the Seven Deadly Sins and as such is generally considered sinful. It is interesting, however, to see how anger is seen in the teaching of the Bible.

In our Year 9 Christian Studies classes we study Mark’s Gospel in Term 3 and one of the surprising outcomes of that study is to see how at least on occasions Jesus expresses some anger. One passage, in particular (Mark 8:27-33), shows Jesus getting angry with Peter for totally missing the point about what kind of Messiah Jesus actually was. Although the Gospels do not record much anger shown by Jesus, He never the less does show anger on occasions.

Likewise in other parts of the Bible, God is described as having anger. God’s anger is always a righteous anger, which is directed towards things such as injustice, oppression, mistreatment of the poor and ungodliness. To get some sort of appreciation of God’s anger it is helpful to read the five major prophets and twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament (Isaiah-Daniel and Hosea-Malachi). It is not surprising that the very things that God gets angry about in these books are still ongoing issues of concern today.

From a human point of view we generally exercise a fair amount of care about expressions of anger because we understand how easily things can get out of hand and how others can be wounded by our anger. Having said that, most of us feel anger from time to time and at least occasionally express it. Many of us would also recognise that the angry words of a true friend can actually be enormously helpful in terms of keeping us on track. Anger is not always bad.

The teaching of the Bible helps to put things into context and balance. So I thought I would leave you with four verses from the Bible that help to put the topic of anger in balance. They are verses which have helped and guided people from generation to generation and have been of great practical help for people who follow them.

In your anger do not sin; Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. Ephesians 4:26

Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. James 1:19

A gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end. Proverbs 29:1

Girl Power in STEM Program Camp – University of Melbourne, July 2018Over the July holidays, I had the marvellous opportunity to take part in the Girl Power in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Camp, run by the University of Melbourne. This four-day camp was designed to empower girls in Year 9, interested in STEM subjects and careers, to experience and learn about these disciplines and discover what university life and career pathways would be like and is part of my ongoing participation in the University’s Girl Power in STEM Program. The selection process involved firstly a teacher letter of reference and my written application. This was reviewed by two panels, followed by a phone interview for shortlisted candidates. I was thrilled to be one of 30 students selected from the 350 who applied.

The four days at the University of Melbourne were jam-packed with a variety of activities, workshops and events regarding the six main sub-disciplines of Engineering. This included virtual reality, wind energy, and water filtration workshops, programming challenges and robotics, including the Robogals workshop, started by Melbourne University’s own Marita Cheng. Personally, I enjoyed the Arduino workshop, working with the Arduino program and connecting this to the circuit board to bring our program to ‘life’. During our stay in Melbourne University, we also had the opportunity to experience ‘dorm-life’, as some would say, in the accommodation of Trinity College. The evenings were filled with events to allow us to bond and get to know each other, including a Trivia Night and a Movie Night, during which we watched Hidden Figures. A particular highlight was the Panel and Networking evening, in which we had the opportunity to ask a panel of six women (chaired by Professor Sandra Kentish) in the engineering field what their experiences were in reaching their current positions, and what the prospects were for girls like us. Throughout the duration of the camp, we were able to bond with the fellow students in various group working environments and together share our passion for STEM.

This camp was just the first stage of the program, which will be followed by Work Experience in the University of Melbourne next year, and further mentoring opportunities in Year 11 and 12. This camp was an eye-opening experience, with opportunities to connect with like-minded peers with similar interests, as well as connecting and talking with university students and professors. This program truly allows girls to explore the world of STEM and look around at what our future could be. I strongly encourage girls to look out for this opportunity in the future and to venture into the leading world of STEM. I would particularly like to thank Mrs Knopfelmacher for her continued support in this endeavour!

Application forms are now available from the Music Office and must be submitted by Friday 2 November. Students will be notified later in Term Four as to whether or not their application was successful, and auditions are held during Term One 2019 for successful applicants. Students who learn an instrument outside school are welcome to apply.

2019 Music ApplicationsStudents who wish to take up an instrument in 2019 should return their completed application forms prior to the end of the school year as this will assist with our planning. Forms are now available from the Music Office in the PAC and also from the Junior School office, as well as the school website.

Students who are currently learning but wish to discontinue should give notice in writing by the mid-term break, again to assist with our 2019 planning. Notice to discontinue may be emailed to [email protected]

Please note that enrolment in the Music and Speech programs is ongoing and there is no requirement to re-enrol each year.

Past EventsWoodwind Concerts

Two woodwind concerts were held late last term in Rehearsal Room 1 in the PAC. On 3 September students of saxophone gave their yearly offering of solos with piano accompaniment provided by Erica Wright. ‘Bachelor Girl’ was a favourite!

The double reed concert was held on Wednesday 5 September and featured the oboe and bassoon students at PLC. Some promising players on both instruments are emerging. Thank you to Ms Kerith Cummins who accompanied the students on piano at short notice.

Clair Wheatley 11TIt’s great to see someone embracing the vast range of opportunities that the PLC Music Department offers and Clair certainly does that! Because of the number of instruments Clair plays, she is involved in numerous ensembles including Melba

Chorale, Vocalease, PLC Clarinets, Wind Symphony and Pipes and Drums.

How long have you been learning your instruments?Clarinet – 8 yearsBagpipes – 5 yearsSinging – Well, ever since I can remember but I started taking lessons when I was 11.

What made you choose those instruments?Clarinet – I don’t really know, maybe because it looks like a liquorice stick, maybe because my older sister said “Play the flute! We should be flute buddies!” and I didn’t want to embarrass myself so chose something different. I think my dad mentioned something about Benny Goodman and I was curious as to who he was… !Bagpipes – My dad initially wanted me to play it because he said it was cool. You’ve got to admit though, it is a pretty cool and rare instrument to play.Singing/Opera – I guess I just really loved everything about opera; the arias, the costumes, the interesting and often scandalous story lines, so I decided to specialise in that style of singing, and yeah, I love it.

What music do you enjoy listening to?I have a very wide yet very picky taste in music. I really like 70s-80s music (I’m a 70’s-80’s enthusiast) (rock, smooth, synthwave), and I love Romantic and 20th century orchestral music. I don’t really like music from the 21st century, except non- mainstream music like Miami Horror or the 1975.

Who is your favourite musician?Probably George Gershwin, he was just an amazing guy. There are however, many more musicians out there that are up there, like Maurice Ravel and Leonard Bernstein

What do you enjoy about music at PLC?There are so many opportunities. There are a lot of performances throughout the year that you can be involved and so many groups you can join.

What advice do you have for new PLC students regarding the music program?Go and do a little bit of research about the various instruments offered, make a list of the ones you think are cool and then try them out (I think there are a few sessions at the start of the year when you can do that) . Then it’s just the process of elimination…you can do more than one instrument though so if you can’t choose take up both.

Is there a concert or performance that you have attended that has made a lasting impression?I attended The Age Aria grand finals at Hamer Hall because one of my singing teacher’s students was a finalist. All the performances inspired me so much to keep plugging away with what I’m doing in terms of music, and to really continue with my singing, because you just never know where you might end up. I think it is vital to expose yourself to what you love, and the area you want to go into by going to performances.

Why is music important to you? This might sound really cheesy, but music is what makes me a person. Without it, I would be nothing. There’s so much you can show; you can let out your emotions, tell stories, make people fall in love, and make others feel heartbroken. Music is so ambiguous, there are so many ways of interpreting different compositions, and that’s what makes musicians so special. You can let your individuality and personality shine through those different interpretations. It’s honestly so awesome; that’s why music’s so important to me.

Are you involved in music outside PLC? If so, please tell us about it!Yes, I am involved with music outside school. I study Classical Voice with Susan-Breen Clarke and I also do various concerts/eisteddfods related to that. I’ve won various prizes for those performances so that’s really nice.

How do you plan to continue your involvement with music after you leave school?I’m actually planning to audition for as many music institutions as possible in Australia and overseas so I can (hopefully) get into an opera course (I might try out for clarinet too). I then (fingers crossed) hope to have a career in the music industry as a performer.

From the Head of Junior SchoolA very warm welcome back to Term 4. We have been pleased to see the girls and teachers back at school refreshed from the 3 week break. Term 4 is a really busy term in the lead up to the end of the year. It is full of so many exciting events to look forward to! We look forward to sharing them with you.

Junior Primary ConcertWe had an exciting fun-filled end to Term 3. The theme of the Junior Primary Concert was ‘What a Wonderful World’. The stage was set colourfully and provided a vibrant backdrop for the much anticipated dancing and singing performances by each class in Junior Primary. It was quite remarkable to hear the strong projection of such young voices and the confident way they moved throughout each of the dances. Parents delighted in watching their daughter on the stage and the girls were so proud of their items. Sincere thanks to Mrs Johnstone and Mrs Casey for their preparation of the girls and for their creative construction of the program. Thank you also to the Class Teachers from Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 for all of their assistance with costumes and supervision backstage.

The girls must wear a hat when they are outside during the school day and as such will need their hat to be at school each day.

The girls’ shoes also need to be cleaned and polished for school each day. Parents are asked to purchase shoe polish for this purpose and ensure that the shoes are maintained to a high standard. Shoe polish is available in any supermarket.

Screen timeA recent report distributed by the Alliance of Girls’ School, Australasia focuses on the fact that Digital media is increasingly pervasive throughout society, including in the bedtime routines of children. Many parents may believe that watching a video or playing a computer game before bedtime is calming but, in fact, increasingly researchers are finding that these activities may have the opposite effect. The light emitted by digital devices signals our circadian system to suppress the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, disrupting our body clock and sabotaging sleep. The effect is particularly pronounced in children as their eyes are still developing and their larger pupils and more transparent lenses are more susceptible to the negative effects of light than adults.

The following is recommended in this recent research:

• Make sleep a priority: Talk with your family about the importance of sleep, healthy sleep expectations, and the negative consequences of bright light in the evening.

• Encourage a bedtime routine that includes calming activities and avoids electronic media use.

• Encourage the removal of all electronic media from bedrooms, including televisions, video games, computers, tablets and mobile phones.

• Charge electronic devices in a central location outside bedrooms. Finally, they say, “Be a good role model.”

The report recommends that we “do all of the above yourself, too”, and if your child or teenager is exhibiting mood or behavioural problems, “consider insufficient sleep as a contributing factor”.

Junior Primary Social ServiceI would like to extend a huge thankyou to all the Junior Primary parents who supported our recent walkathon. We joined other independent schools in tracking the number of kilometres walked in total to see how far all the children could ‘walk around the world’ whilst raising money for the important work of the Kids with Cancer Foundation (Australia), The Room. This organisation does wonderful work in providing funds for childhood cancer sufferers, their families and other institutions that assist children with cancer. The Prep, Year One and Year Two girls participated in our PLC walkathon during May and collected money from their very generous sponsors. Incredibly the girls raised over $6732.00!!!

Thank you so much. It is an amazing amount to be able to donate to such a worthwhile cause.

Obstacle Course and Footy Colours DayTowards the end of last term, the Middle Primary girls took great delight in showing their true colours as caring, generous children with a desire to serve others. By participating in an exciting obstacle course around the Junior School, they raised $3603.80 with the help of their families and friends. This money was used to purchase torches for the girls at Neno Girls’ School in Malawi. Not stopping there, the Year 4 girls organised a fun, Footy Colours Day, for all Junior School girls, who kindly donated $700.00 to the Fight Cancer Foundation. This money will be used to ensure children with cancer continue their education during treatment and recovery. It was wonderful to see such generosity from within our PLC community and a huge thank-you is extended to all, from the girls at Neno and the Fight Cancer Foundation.

From the Garden to the TableA Recipe for Life!Early childhood is a wonderful time to involve children in education for sustainability. Through sustainability practices, young children are provided with learning experiences that enhance all their senses: these senses are the vehicle through which children can express their thoughts, understanding and ideas.

Growing vegetables with children provides a hands-on gardening experience where children do the authentic work and make connections between plants and food. These experiences provide opportunities for the children to dig the earth, plant seasonal produce and observe transformations. Most of all, they experience the pleasure of preparing and sharing food with others from the plants they have nurtured and harvested.

We are fortunate at the ELC to have our own large vegetable gardens which are situated within the large grassy area beyond our playground. The children have embraced their special responsibility of tending to and caring for the seedlings and plants and are always excited when the vegetables are ready to harvest.

The ELC vegetable gardens provide various forms of engagement for children, including designing, planting and maintaining gardens; harvesting, preparing and sharing food; working cooperatively in groups; learning about science and nutrition; and creating art and stories inspired by the natural world.

These gardens and the related activities also aim to help children connect and contribute to their world, to become socially responsible, to show respect for the environment and to enhance children’s sense of achievement.

Gardening is a life-long love and skill and is an ideal way to incorporate learning experiences in a meaningful way.
