The Player Performance Index is something I use to measure training and matches from a quantitative point of view. We tried to take away the subjectivity of

assessing performance by using an algorithm based on targets per session and match that were position specific (for example, number of goals scored, chances

created, number of recovery runs etc) - each assistant head coach also has an input into the final numbers and by using Excel th e final result is what you see in

this document.

There are certain caveats which explains the low scores and the 0.00s - if a player fails to attend training without notifying the team manager it is an automatic

0.00 - if a player is late or acts unprofessionally during training, instead of adopting a traditional fine system which takes away their money, I chose to take away 2 points automatically (this was very effective by the way!). Every week there was a cash prize including trophy for player of the week including training and

matches and punishments for the bottom three.

The daily team averages are also calculated and everyone was informed that their actions (including lateness and not turning up) would affect the entire team

average. As a result, players were sorting themselves out and the ones with poor attitude were soon pulled up by the rest.

I know what you may be thinking, performance indexes, spreadsheets, variables, algorithms, nonsense, but it is interesting to note that the stand out performer

throughout the entire season, Bubacarr Sanneh, was quantitatively the player of the season and he eventually secured a move to a club in Denmark and I was

able to use this index as evidence of his consistency. In fact the top three all secured transfers to Denmark, Kenya and Sweden respectively, with another three

amongst the top ten moving to Denmark , Morocco and China as well.

I continue to find this useful as a guide or indicator on performance, particularly in training, with the competitive edge in players they want to do all they can to

get the high scores or at the very least not be in the bottom three. It can be a guide and justification towards team selection but by no means the only method as then you would be picking players by numbers. But as another example, Ebrima Mansally, was performing very well in training in the buildup to a league game

against Samger but hadn't started a game all season. The numbers, his goals his training and my instincts told me to pick him, end result? He got 1 goal and

1assist in 4-1 win but as you can see from the numbers he was beaten to MOTM award.

Apologies for the long winded explanation but wanted to share in case anyone shares a similar philosophy and may find this useful.
