The Reds selected RHP Mike Leake from Arizona State University with their first pick (8th overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.

Leake, 21, was the first pitcher selected by the Reds in the opening round since RHP Homer Bailey in 2004. He is the first collegiate pitcher selected by the Reds in the first round since RHP Ryan Wagner in 2003.

Leake was the 2008 PAC-10 Pitcher of the Year and a finalist for the 2009 Golden Spikes Award after going 11-3 with a 3.49 ERA in 2009 as a junior. The righthander also was a semifinalist for the Pitcher of the Year Award

presented by the College Baseball Foundation. His 40 career wins at Arizona State are tied for the most in school history. He participated in the 2009 College World Series with the Sun Devils.

2009 Minor League All-Star Selections

For the second straight season, the Bats won the International League West Division title and finished the year with the league’s best record (84-57, .592). It marked the club’s fourth consecutive winning season, its fourth division championship since 2001 and the first time in franchise history the Bats won at least 80 games in back-to-back seasons (88-56 in ‘08). They were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by Durham, 3 games to 2. The Bats’ pitching staff tallied a 3.46 team ERA, the lowest in club history, and boasted 3 pitchers with 10 or more saves for the first time since 1998 (Logan Ondrusek 12, Josh Roenicke 12, Robert Manuel 10). Rick Sweet became the first skipper in nearly 30 years to earn consecutive International League Manager of the Year honors. In July, he managed the IL to a 6-5 win over the Pacific Coast League in the 2009 Triple-A All-Star Game in Portland, Oregon. That game featured a 2-run homer by starting RF Drew Stubbs and a perfect first inning by starting RHP Justin Lehr. For the second consecutive year, 1B Kevin Barker took home the Mary E. Barney Award as the Bats’ MVP. He led the club with 22 homers and a .285 batting average. LHP Matt Maloney led the team with a 3.08 ERA, while International League Most Valuable Pitcher Lehr paced the staff with 13 wins.

In its first year as a Reds affiliate, Carolina was led by first-time manager David Bell. Despite their 65-74 record, the Mudcats featured some of the best minor league players coming up through the Reds system, including Southern League All-Stars LHP Travis Wood, IF/OF Todd Frazier, 1B Yonder Alonso, 3B Juan Francisco, OF Chris Heisey, SS Zack Cozart and RHP Matt Klinker. After shattering the league’s ERA record, Wood was named the SL’s Most Outstanding Pitcher. His 1.21era was tops among qualifiers in all full-season leagues. Frazier led the club in batting (.290), while Francisco ranked among league leaders in several offensive categories, including RBI (74). Following the season, Bell was selected to manage the Peoria Saguaros of the prestigious Arizona Fall League. Alonso, Cozart and LHP Philippe Valiquette were chosen to play for Bell in Peoria.

After beginning the season 2-13, the Dayton Dragons steadily improved under first-year skipper Todd Benzinger and nearly qualified for the Midwest League’s second-half playoffs. Overall, the Dragons finished 59-80 (.424), including 31-38 in the second-half. LHP Matt Fairel was the staff’s ace, going 8-5 with a 2.93 ERA in 19 starts before his promotion to Sarasota. Twice he was named the league’s pitcher of the week and was also selected to play in the Midwest League All-Star Game. After joining the Dragons on 4/24, IF Carlos Mendez finished the season as the club’s best hitter with a .308 average. His 20-game hitting streak from 7/17-8/8 set a new franchise record.
