In a press release on Wednesday 22 October, the NSP- CA said the prohibition includes the “releasing of any specimen of a listed invasive species, which effectively means it is now illegal to release pigeons to race or to use them as homing pigeons.” Pigeon racing is a multi-million rand industry. The sport is more than 100 years old. People in the industry estimate the number of pigeon farmers in the country to be more than 6 000. “More than half of them employ full-time workers to help with exercise sessions and to take care of the pigeons,” Mr Dawie Stoman of Lichtenburg, a pigeon farmer him- self, told the Platinum Weekly. According to Mr Chris Stoop, champion of the Platinum Specialist Racing Pigeon Union and the Rustenburg sec- tion, “Some of the biggest pigeon farmers employ up to 14 workers. There are people who make a living from pigeon racing. They sell feed and medicine and build breeding boxes. He added, “My 160 pigeons go to the veterinary surgeon once a year to be tested for diseases.” Mr Jan Venter, chairman of the Rustenburg Homing Pi- geon Club, says they will wait for their mother organisa- tion, the South African National Pigeon Organisation, to take this up with the NSPCA. “We take better care of our pigeons than some people do of their children. Brits/ Sun City – Three Chinese tourists returning to Johannesburg from a visit to Sun City were killed and 17 suffered vari-ous levels of injuries in an accident be-tween their bus and a Toyota Raider last Wednesday afternoon (15 Oct), on the R556 Road at Bareseba in Brits – about 50km from Sun City. The Chinese Embassy said in a statement the group of 20 tourists and their Chi-nese tour guide from Walk Through Africa Tours (WTAT) had been on a six-day tour of South Africa and arrived in the country

from Beijing on Wednesday morning. Ac-cording to information, two tourists died on the scene of the accident and another while being airlifted to Johannesburg by rescue helicopter. At least three passengers were severely injured and also airlifted to Johan-nesburg while some of the others were sent to nearby hospitals, according to Pan Peng of the Chinese Embassy.Witnesses to the accident which occurred about 50 km from Sun City, said the driver of bakkie collided with the minibus while overtaking and alleged that he was un-

der the influence of alcohol. He sustained only slight injuries. Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom said on Friday, “We are truly sad-dened by this tragic accident. On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, I would like to extend our sincere condo-lences and sympathy to the families and friends of those who have passed on”. Ac-cording to the minister, China is South Afri-ca’s fourth largest long-haul tourist market.North West MEC for community safety and transport management, Gaoage Molapisi, deplored the rate of road accidents, say-

ing the country can ill afford the human resources and money it is losing through these fatalities. This particular accident was especially unacceptable as it occurred only hours after the transport minister launched the annual transport month. “It is for this reason that our plans are going to focus on road safety education, engaging and encouraging our road users to be more vigilant and patient at all times,” Molapisi said, conveying his condolences to the be-reaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said this week police in January responded to a call in Blydeville, near Lichtenburg, where they found the bloody bodies of Jenaline van Rooyen (23), her one year-old daughter and her unborn baby.

The investigation revealed that the foetus was removed from the mother’s body and its throat slit with a knife. Ndlovu was arrested shortly

dedication leading to these sentences, say-ing, “We really appreciate the efforts of our members and at the same time hope the sen-tences will send a clear message to potential criminals that we will ensure that those who commit crimes, are successfully prosecuted”.

Swartruggens – The Swartruggens Regional Court on Tues-day, 21 Oct, sentenced Johannes Tsietsie Molebatsi (19) to 18 years’ imprisonment on account of murder, Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone reported.Molebatsi was arrested after stabbing 17 year-old Bapaletse Lamola to death during an argument in the Borelelo location of Swartruggens in October 2012. Molebatsi was also declared

no 60 of 2000.Commending the police for their dedication during the inves-tigation, North West police commissioner Lieutenant General Zukiswa Mbombo expressed her appreciation for the efforts of the SAPS, saying the sentence will send a clear message to potential criminals that they will be successfully prosecuted.

Rustenburg – A man (33) appeared in the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane on Wednesday, 22 Oct, on charges of public vio-lence. This is after several assaults and hostage incidents linked to the current wage incre-ment strike by members of National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) were reported on Friday, 17 October at Glencore mine in Kroondal.

Colonel Sabata, police spokesperson said it is alleged that non-striking miners were as-saulted with knobkieries and sjamboks by striking employees who also forced the vic-tims to join the strike. According to the in-formation available at this stage, one of the victims is in a critical condition in the George Mkhari hospital in Ga-Rankuwa with severe head injuries which he sustained when he was hit with a knobkierrie.

In one of the incidents reported, a husband who was dropping off his wife at work and his wife were allegedly forced from their vehicle, assaulted and forced to join the strike whilst in severe pain. They were only released at the end of the picketing.Major General William Mpembe, commander of the Rustenburg Cluster, condemned the strikers’ criminal acts. “The police cannot be expected not to intervene while the rights of

non-striking workers are being violated. While we are doing our best to safeguard lives and properties, we will also bring all violations to the attention of the Human Rights Commis-sion to ensure that the interest of justice is served.”The investigation into the matter continues and more arrests are imminent. The suspect will remain in custody until Tuesday, 28 Octo-ber, for a formal bail application.

Rustenburg – Shaft sinking op-erations on the main and ventila-tion shafts at the Bakubung Plati-num Mine site near Rustenburg had been temporarily halted after the death of a contract worker on

Hy was sedert 1987 by voertuigdiefstaltakke, eers in Polokwane en daarna in Klerks-

Kapt. Hy was ‘n vingerafdruk deskundige. Kapt. Elsabé Augoustides, polisiewoordvoerder, beskryf kapt. Rey-necke as ‘n baie feitelike man.

Rustenburg – The strike by construction workers on the RRT infrastructure pro-gramme is not related to the project, but is an internal matter between the contractor MCivils and their employees; as reported by the RRT on 22 October 2014. MMC for Planning and Transport Service, Cllr. Amos Mataboge met with the employ-ees earlier this week to hear grievances and has urged both parties to resolve issues so that the project can proceed effectively. This remains a private sector employer and

-dence that the matter will be resolved.

REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

Together we move

the North West Province Forward.

Local Police warn Hitch-Hikers

Too much tax and too much debt in budget

Rustenburg – The police in North West warn that both travellers and hitch hikers should be careful after re-cent attacks.Col. Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, says both unsuspecting travellers and hitch hikers have been attacked at various exit routes, at popular hiking spots in Rustenburg, and other towns in the province. In one of the recent cases reported in Rustenburg, the driver of a red Citi Golf offered a lift to a hitch-hiking woman. The latter was subsequently robbed of her cell phone and handbag containing a wallet, bank cards, medical aid card and various credit account cards. She could not identify the suspects and did not take the car’s registration number.Col. Mokgwabone warns that people must always be alert and take precautions. If you become suspicious after hitchhiking, rather ask the driver where they’re going and tell them you are heading elsewhere and turn down the lift if you are in doubt. When hitch hiking, one should take note of or memo-rise the vehicle’s registration number, make, model, and colour before taking a ride and where possible, text this information to a friend or any member of the family. Mokgwabone further said that one should try to choose a car with a single occupant or a couple rather than

getting into a car when all seats are occupied and there is space for one person only. “Regardless of gender, choose wisely; some people have loose hands. It’s more dangerous when you are driving with multiple people.”He cautions that rear doors often have child locks on them, meaning they cannot be opened from the inside. “If you must sit in the back, check the child lock is off before you close the door.”Furthermore, you should keep your bag or backpack in easy reach, so you can grab it if you need to get out fast. “Be prepared to lose it if it is locked in the trunk.”Another safety hint is to take at least some of your valuables like your passport, identity document, wallet, cash and credit cards with you. Keep it under or in your clothes, rather than in your pack. Keep them in differ-ent places, so that if you lose one item, you don’t lose them all at once. “It is a good idea to have your wallet plus two hiding places, an obvious one and a not so obvious one.” He also emphasises that people must know the police emergency number 08600 10111 and anonymous tip-offs Crime Line SMS number 32211. “The safest option is to take your time and go to a public transport at taxi or bus ranks for a reliable and secure mode of transport, especially now that we are building up to the festive season.”

According to trade union Solidarity, as was in the case with his predeces-sor, Pravin Gordhan, Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene’s medium-term budget policy statement tabled in Parliament on Wednesday, 22 Oct, is still based on an unsustainable model of a “de-

mounting government debt and oner-ous taxation. According to Nene, al-most 10,5% of next year’s tax revenue would be spent on debt service costs.According to Paul Joubert, senior eco-nomics researcher at the Solidarity Re-search Institute (SRI), it brings no real tax relief for punch drunk taxpayers; in fact, talk concerning higher taxes now abounds. The budget policy state-

the growth of the South African welfare state, and a disturbing accumulation of government debt can still be observed. The cost of government debt expressed as a percentage of tax revenue has increased steadily since 2008. At the moment, the increase is occurring in an environment of low interest rates,

Should an upswing in interest rates occur, increasingly more government spending would be spent on interest on government loans, and this at a time during which it has become increas-ingly hard for the National Treasury to collect taxes. Joubert emphasised the precarious state of South Africa’s national debt. “Government debt has been rising over the past decade, particularly over the

to R1,8 trillion, not including direct gov-

unsound organisations such as Sanral, Transnet, SAA and Eskom.”Solidarity Press Release

Mahikeng – Premier Supra Mahumapelo on Wednesday (22 Oct) launched a R300 million water project to provide Mahikeng and its surrounds with 30 million litres of clean water per day by November 2016, as part of the Setsokotsane pro-gramme to improve service delivery. The phased development will include the construction of a 25 mega-litre rein-forced reservoir at the Lokaleng pump station as well as about 11 km of gravity pipelines and will create around 48 temporary jobs.“We urge communities to continue using water sparingly and most importantly, to carefully guard against vandalism and stealing of the provided water infrastruc-ture,” the premier said.

Minor Injuries - Severe damage

The driver of this vehicle sustained minor injuries, but his car , the front gate and perim-eter wall of a house in Tlhabane were badly damaged.

Rustenburg – Trauma Rescue was sum-moned to an accident scene at the inter-section of the R24 and the Kroondal road

light, on Sunday (19 Oct) at approximately 08:40. According to station manager Wey-land Bothma, it is not clear who disre-garded the red light, but a white Toyota, a grey Polo and a grey Opel bakkie were involved. Three patients were transported to hospi-tal for treatment.

Rustenburg – Two vehicles avoided a collision and both ended up in a ditch on the op-posite sides of the Phokeng road in the early hours of Sunday morning (19 Oct).Weyland Bothma, Trauma Rescue station manager, says the grey Volkswagen and grey Jeep presumably came too close to each other and both drivers reacted by pulling the steering wheels in the opposite direction, veering off the side of the road. Two patients were transported to hospital for treatment.

Rustenburg – One of Trauma Rescue’s ambulances were summoned on Sunday at about 18:00 to assist in a drowning emergency at a well-known camping site in Rustenburg. On arrival paramedics took over from bystanders performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but they were unable to revive the patient. The patient was an 18-year old matric

camp before embarking on the matric ex-aminations due to start next week. The Grade 12 class of a school in Lanseria are all severely traumatised by witness-ing the death of their classmate and are receiving trauma counselling.“Last night we went to the area. of Pastor Nelson Yankasamy of Siloam Ministries.Mr Mornay Beukes, Manager: Strategic Projects at Hinterland, told Platinum Weekly that donations to the value of R22 000 were received. The value of each food parcel is almost R500. The donations included 50 pairs of shoes.Hinterland is a company formed by the merger of the trading sections of Senwes and Afgri, with 60 branches country wide.

Rustenburg – Contrary to the usual Christmas wish list compiled by most of us, the Grace Help Centre list con-tains no luxuries but mostly consists of everyday items that can neverthe-less make a huge difference in the life of an orphan.Topping the list are disposable nap-pies (Huggies or Pampers) for babies from new-born to 14 kg, baby toilet-

ries such as soap, wet wipes, body wash and bum butter; baby porridge and Purity; baby clothing from new-born to ten years and over as well as toys and bicycles which would mean the world to deprived children.Women in crisis who have become the unfortunate victims of domestic violence, rape and all forms of abuse,

Rustenburg – Last week (15 Oct), Rustenburg was the venue for the National Small Business Chamber (NSBC) and ABSA’s country-wide entrepreneurial road-show. The schedule will see them visiting nine cities in eight provinces before the end of the month. The National Build a Business Road-show was held at the Rustenburg Golf Club; and promoted SME growth and entrepreneurial skills. The road-

show offers entrepreneurs a plat-form to learn more about starting and growing a business as well as

the-line seminars and networking with like-minded individuals. It will incorporate practical “know-how” entrepreneurial advice on ‘What It Takes to be a Successful Entre-preneur and Access to Funding’ by NSBC founder and CEO Mike An-derson and ABSA. Happy Ralina-

la, Head of Absa Business Bank-ing, said, “Absa wants to be the Go-To bank for entrepreneurs. We want to go beyond banking to sup-port SMEs, the future of which is critical to driving economic growth. Millions of South Africans rely on small businesses for their liveli-hood, and this segment employs a substantial number of people.”

vourite golf course amongst the over 370 he has designed in 35 countries across the globe. And it becomes an even harder one when he has to choose his favourite in his beloved South Africa. This November, the Lost City Golf Course will, for the second year in succession, stage the Gary Player Invitational presented by Coca-Cola. This charity event forms part of the global Gary Player Invitational series, which is played in the United States, Europe, China, Abu Dhabi, and South Af-rica.“When Africa is in your blood as much as it’s in mine, how can you not feel a special sense of place when you step onto the tee at the Lost City Golf Course? This golf course is so special and unique in its character,” tournament host Gary Player said. “The bushveld atmosphere gives it such a great feel. You’ve got the crocodiles near the 13th green, the incredible bird life, the Pilanesberg mountains overlooking the course – it’s like being in a game reserve. I think, as a showcase of what it’s like to play golf in Africa, we could choose no better course than this and I know our international guests are going to love it.”

WP vs Blou BulleWP jou lekke ding!…

Saterdag.

Nag ou grote…

Curriebeker Semi Finale: 2014Pick n Pay Tuscany Mathaithai trail run

Rustenburg – The third annual Mathaithai trail run took place on Saturday 18 Oct at Leb-one II College of The Royal Bafokeng. This year its name had changed to the Pick n Pay Tuscany Mathaithai trail run in honour of one of the major sponsors – Pick n Pay Tuscany.

lege. Several national contenders competed in this gruelling run.At 8:30am the runners of the 10km run were on the starting line ready for their own run. As

drew to the starting line and by 9am the start-

the 5km challenge took off.

Whilst some athletes considered the day a fun run other pursued the “run” with much more vigour than the “fun” and rose to the challenge of striving to better their own times. Whether the fun or the run was the emphasis, the ath-letes all had a great time. The runners were not just limited to the young but the young at heart as well. The oldest contender for the day was Mr Jo-han Rossouw who competed in the 10km race and ended the day with a skip in his step and a smile on his face, proof once more that a healthy lifestyle is a happy lifestyle. Whilst the runners were criss-crossing up the mountains and down the veld, their supporters were enjoying the hospitality of the organis-ers with a few lovely stalls serving everything

boerewors rolls for breakfast. All told, it was a wonderful event and beautifully orchestrated by Herme Visser and Sean Lindsay. First to

Phillip Molefe. For the veterans, the winners in the 25kms were Johnny Taung followed a few moments later by Mazu Ndanani with Cobus Liacos in the 3rd place. The 5km run had a bit of a “de-tour” as several runners took a wrong turn in the Magaliesburg and ended up doing approxi-

-ish line. As a result no single individual could be crowned as winner of the 5km run but as a token of good sportsmanship the organiser decided to reward all the contenders.
