Consolidated expertise in plastics and chemicalsThe Capital Region Berlin-Brandenburg is an important loca-

tion for the European chemical and plastics industries. It is

marked by its dynamic growth and a climate conducive to in-

novation. With around 400 companies and 11,600 employees,

the plastics and chemistry cluster is a mainstay of industry.

Companies here work closely with scientific institutions, conti-

nuously evolve their products and thus increase their interna-

tional competitiveness.

The products offered range from premium automotive paint

used around the world via innovative machine components to

system-critical components for the aerospace industry. At the

same time, the chemical and plastics industry in the region

can look back on a long history: a factory in Erkner was the

first in the world to produce plastic components at an indus-

trial level, and to this day, premium resins are developed and

produced for technical applications at Dynea Erkner GmbH.

Seminal companies located in large chemistry parks in

Schwedt/Oder, Premnitz, Guben and Schwarzheide shape the

industry’s profile. Alongside major players such as BASF, Tre-

vira, PCK Raffinerie and Goodyear, the industry is represented

by a large number of innovative medium-sized companies.

Products such as man-made fibres, films, tyres, components

for household appliances and wind turbines, polyurethane

base products, agricultural pesticides, water-based paints

and technical plastics are in demand around the globe.

Unbeatable in research and development In research and development, the Capital Region Berlin-Bran-

denburg is a European heavyweight. 52 universities and other

institutes of higher education with more than 200,000 students,

24 institutes of the Leibniz Association, 8 Fraunhofer-Gesell-

schaft institutes and 8 institutes of the Max Planck Society to-

gether make Berlin and Brandenburg an international centre

for researchers, scientists and technology experts. Research

interests of significance to the chemicals and plastics indus-

tries include biopolymers and lightweight composites.

The many research institutions in the Capital Region and ef-

ficient technology transfer form a solid basis for strong inno-

vation performance within companies and thus for economic

success.

Highly qualified and available expertsThe labour market in Berlin-Brandenburg comprises the lar-

gest proportion of highly qualified experts in Germany. You

are sure to find your future experts from among the approxi-

mately 35,000 students who graduate every year.

The German Capital Region also offers a wide selection of

training centres for occupations relating to specific industries.

Hands-on training in close cooperation with business, the in-

volvement of students in companies’ innovation projects and

the attractive support offered by active business development

programmes guarantee highly trained employees.

Top local conditions

The Capital Region Berlin-Brandenburg is a centre of excel-

lence with a high quality of life. It offers companies an ideal

basis for their economic success, experts and managers out-

standing leisure opportunities in addition to ideal professional

prospects. The high level of productivity is above all a con-

sequence of modern capital asset management. In terms of

turnover, the State of Brandenburg has a capital outlay ratio of

4.1 per cent, the third-highest in all of Germany. In 2011 alone

and not least due to tailored funding, the companies in Bran-

denburg invested over a billion euros in new plants, machines

and buildings – an increase of 31 per cent on the previous

year. This has enabled the production facilities to achieve a

level of modernisation not seen since German reunification. In

2012, Brandenburg emerged victorious in the German state

dynamism ranking for the third time in a row.

Where investment makes sense

Berlin-Brandenburg offers excellent and customized funding programmes for busi-

nesses which are new to the region or excel in innovation. Investment incentives

come in the form of direct subsidies. Funding programmes pool resources from

the EU, the German federal government and the states of Berlin and Brandenburg.

High quality of life

The region offers the unique combination of Berlin’s international metropolitan flair and

Brandenburg’s fascinating countryside and historical places of interest. A nightlife like

no other, renowned large-scale events, more than 170 museums, 150 performance ve-

nues and around 500 palaces, churches and parks – all these add up to an irresistible

location. The region also offers unlimited sporting and leisure activities such as golf,

horse riding, water sports and flying. Living costs, infrastructure and leisure activities

are considerably more affordable than in other comparable metropolitan regions.

Investment made easy

The two economic development corporations, Berlin Partner for Business and Tech-

nology and the Brandenburg Economic Development Board (ZAB), will provide ex-
