1. Rigidity of Set Up - Vibration is a major source of tool wear and poor finish. Adjust feed rate to minimize vibration. Often a faster rate can improve finishes.
2. Router Environment -Other variables that affect every routing application are spindle horsepower, rigidity and runout, collet condition, clamping system and tool sharpness. Adjust feed rate to achieve desired finish.
3. Number of Flutes -Single flute tools should be fed at a slightly higher rate(approximately 10%)than double flute tools.
4. Bit Diameter -This chart is for 1/4” diameter bits. Bit diameter feed factors are as follows: 3/8” dia. plus 10%, 1/2” dia. plus 20%.
5. Depth of Cut -Decrease feed rate approximately 25% for each multiple of the depth of cut.(If depth is 2 times, reduce by 25%. If depth is 3 times, reduce by 50%.)
6. Spindle Speed -Adjust feed rate chart on a linear basis relative to 18,000 spindle RPM (If spindle is 20,000 RPM increase feed rate by approximately 10%. If spindle is 14,500 RPM reduce feed rate by approximately 20%.)
7. Finish -Find the fastest feed rate that will enable you to obtain satisfactory finish for best tool life.
8. Routing Formulas:Chip Load = Feed Rate/(RPM x # cutting edges) Feed Rate = RPM x # cutting edges x chip loadSpeed (RPM) = Feed Rate /(# cutting edges x chip load)

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR TOOL MATERIAL AND GEOMETRY
TOOL MATERIALS
Solid Carbide Use for fibrous or abrasive plastics.
Carbide Tipped Use for general plastic cutting applications.
High Speed Steel Use for optimum surface finish.
TOOL GEOMETRY
Straight Flute Use for plastic hand feed applications.
Spiral Flute Use for plastic automaticfeed applications.
FLUTE GEOMETRY
Single Flute Use for faster feed rates in softer materials.
Double Flute Use for better finish in harder materials.
Upcut Spiral ↑ Use for grooving or slotting, for upward chip evacuation and best finish on bottom side of piece part.
Downcut Spiral ↓ Use for downward chip flow, better hold down in fixture and best finish on top side of piece part.
Up/Down Spiral Use for double laminated material and best finish on top and bottom side of piece part.

CNC ROUTER FEED CHARTBASED ON 18,000 RPM, 1⁄4” DIAMETER CUTTING EDGE AND 1⁄4” DEPTH OF CUT
These feed rates are only guide-lines. Actual speed & feed rates willdepend on individual equipmentand goals. Generally, the faster a bitis fed, the longer the edges will last. For maximum life, start at a “safe”rate, then push feed rate until eitherfinish is undesirable, or tool is riskingbreakage. Other factors that affectfeed rate are listed below.
