WHO WE AREGreenpop is an award-winning non-profit organisation on a mission to (re)connect people with our planet. We plant trees, grow food, educate people and have fun doing it!

We work on urban greening, reforestation, and food growing projects, and educate people through practical workshops. Greenpop was founded in 2010 and has since planted over 70 000 trees at schools and other urban sites as well as forests and farms across South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania.

WHY TREESForests cover one third of the earth's land mass and perform vital functions around the world. They play a key role in our battle against climate change, feed our rivers, help to regulate the impact of storms and floods, harbor biologically-diverse ecosystems, and provide shelter, jobs and security for forest-dependent populations.

Within our cities, urban forests purify the air and ground water, regulate temperatures, provide shade, and encourage pride of place.

Despite all of these priceless benefits, we are destroying the very forests we need to survive. In addition, we have become disconnected from nature - our beautiful planet and only home.

But it's not too late. By activating people from all walks of life to (re)connect with nature, plant trees and get active for our planet, Greenpop is helping to pave the road toward a greener future.

WHAT IS OUR IMPACT

Urban Greening ProgrammeThe aim is to empower local communities to improve their environmental and social landscapes by using tree planting as a tool for active citizenship, environmental stewardship and learning.

Planting trees does not just have environmental benefits, but that it also generates a number of social and economic benefits:

● General community upliftment through the various social and economical benefits that are linked to urban greening,

● Environmental education by teaching the beneficiaries about the importance of trees and assisting them in taking ownership of them and

● Feeding children at schools and crèches by planting fruit trees, where conditions are suitable.

The programme addresses and improves the lack of green spaces in underprivileged neighbourhoods, a lack of education on environmental issues and self-sustainability, and a lack of job opportunities in the green space.

Reforestation ProgrammeThe aim is to reforest these forests and increase biodiversity, while spreading awareness about the forests and the need to preserve them.

Greenpop has a unique model for engaging in highly important ecological restoration work, which seeks to:

● Mitigate the damage being done to our indigenous forests of South Africa

● Source most of the trees from small suppliers and empower local economies

● Partner with established organisations, trusts and individuals

The knock on effects of our reforestation work has significant ecological and sociological impacts, from restoring watersheds and removing invasive alien vegetation to job creation and skills development.
