Between Mount Dandenong Road and Railway Avenue
The consultant chose the following large trees and small to medium-sized trees to match the scale of each particular section of the street.
The consultant was mindful of motorist’s sight lines in reversing a vehicle from existing residential driveways. The trees have been selected for their hardiness and tolerance of clay soils.
The six trees are:
Large spreading evergreen indigenous trees
Eucalyptus cephalocarpa (Silver-leafed Stringbark)
Eucalyptus radiata (Narrow-Leafed Peppermint)
Medium-sized indigenous tree
Allocasuarina littoralis (Black she-oak)
45L 1.8m
Medium-sized native tree
Callistemon salignus (Willow Bottlebrush)
Small indigenous tree
Banksia marginate (Silver Banksia)
Small native tree
Callistemon ‘Kings Park’ (Bottlebrush)
75L 2m
Preference has been given to selecting evergreen indigenous tree species, one tree Callistemon salignus is native to coastal New South Wales and grows well as a street tree in the Melbourne area.
The following is a description of each tree:
Eucalyptus cephalocarpa - Silver-leaf Stringbark is a large canopy tree indigenous to the Eastern suburbs to the Dandenong’s and the Mornington Peninsula. The bark is thick and fibrous and the trunk has spreading limbs. The leaves are blue/grey presenting a silvery colour for the canopy. The tree is a good habitat tree for insects and birds.
Eucalyptus radiata – Narrow-Leafed Peppermint is widespread in southern Victoria on a range of soils from sandy loam to eastern suburbs clay soils. The canopy is generally rounded. However, occasionally groups of Eucalyptus radiata can be quite tall and upright. The tree provides good habitat value for birds and insects.
Allocasuarina littoralis - Black She-oak is an upright delicately foliaged tree, its foliage resembling that of a pine tree. The tree is indigenous to the Melbourne area to a range of soils from the coast to the Dandenong’s foothills.
Callistemon salignus – Willow Bottlebrush is a fast-growing tree with ornamental foliage that can grow up to approximate height 8 metres. This bird attractant tree has narrow leaves and cream-yellow coloured flowers. The tree is adaptable in a wide range of soils and conditions from moist or dry to the coast.
Callistemon ‘Kings Park’ - Bottlebrush, this tall shrub is a form of Callistemon citrinus, which is native to coastal Gippsland through coastal New South Wales. The Kings Park form is generally an upright tree to approximate 4-5 metres in height. This cultivar attracts birds and insects.
Banksia marginata - Silver Banksia, an indigenous large shrub to small tree. It is highly variable depending in its size on its genetic provenance. It occurs on a wide range of soils from heathland sands to clay loams of the foothills. This species is an important habitat species, attracting birds and insects particularly during flowering.
