Discover how to succeed with seedlings, take cuttings of rare or difficult to grow plants to enhance your garden, save money and satisfy the challenge of growing your own special plants. Learn from the Botanic Gardens of South Australia Nursery Curator in this practical hands-on Masterclass.
This course is ideal for rare plant collectors, horticulture students, school or kitchen garden coordinators or those home gardeners just wanting to meet the challenge of propagating your own plants.
This Masterclass will cover the scientific principles of plant growth and propagation and will include
demonstrations of growing media and a range of propagation methods. This is a 5-hour, hands-on, practical Masterclass where you will propagate plants using a range of seed and vegetative propagation techniques - skills you will be able to take home and apply in your own gardening.
At the end of the day, participants can take home the plant and propagation materials they have generated during the class.
The course facilitator will not only teach different techniques but also share his knowledge and experience, leading to a deeper understanding of plant physiology and propagating techniques.

Course description
This Masterclass will cover:• Seed collection, cleaning and storage• Propagation methods – seed sowing, taking
cuttings, division• Pricking out and potting up of seedlings• Vegetative propagation including soft tip
cuttings, semi hardwood cuttings, hardwood cuttings
• Propagation mixes• Environmental controls
Special requirements
The session will involve practical activities so appropriate footwear (closed shoes, no sandals) and gloves will be required. Participants must bring their own sharpened secateurs. Plant material cannot be brought to the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden Nursery. Non-accredited plant material may harbour soil and plant pathogens which could contaminate the nursery.

Matt Coulter
Matt Coulter has worked in the horticultural nursery industry for the past 30 years. Matt is currently the curator of Plant Propagation at the Adelaide, Mount Lofty and Wittunga Botanic Gardens managing the propagation and growing of new plant material for the Gardens. Matt is widely known for his innovative work in propagating one of the world’s most fascinating plants – the Amorphophallus titanum (pictured above). Matt’s work has seen the Botanic Gardens of South Australia amass one of the world’s largest collections of this threatened species. Previously Matt has worked in a broad range of technical and highly specialised propagation roles, with experience in nursery and greenhouse operations, plant nutrition and plant tissue culture.
