The “Duffy”Karting’s Highest Award

Each year, hundreds of karters from all of the USA participate in the IKF Grand Nationals in hopes of winning their class and becoming an

IKF Grand National Champion. Along with this prestigious title, each driver is competing for the

most coveted award in karting, the “Duffy.”

Prior to 1976, each Grand National Champion received a TV set or a plaque as their award. At the 1976 April Meeting of the I.K.F. Board of Directors,

Administrative Director Bob Graham presented the Board Members with a model of the 12 inch bronze statuette that was to be mounted on a 6

inch wooden base. The designer of this model was Pete Millar.

The Board Members agreed that karting needed a “grand prize” to present to each Grand National Champion; something that was out of the ordinary and unique as most karters received many trophies

each year for participating in local or regional events. The vote was taken and the statuette

was presented, for the first time, at the 1976 I.K.F. Grand Nationals.

From 1976 to 1981, it was known as the “Joe Karter” award. At the January 1981 Board Meeting,

President John Strauser called for the Board’s vote to honor a man who, just the month before,

had retired from I.K.F. and karting. This well know gentleman had been active in karting as a driver, mechanic, Board Member, past President

several times of the I.K.F., and was the Co-Founder of organized karting and the Go-Kart Club of

America, which evolved into the International Kart Federation. His name, Frank “Duffy” Livingstone.

President Strauser made the announcement  that henceforth the statuette was to be

known as the “Duffy.”

Briggs & strattoN raCiNg maNuFaCturer update:all 206 aNd m-series eNgiNes

on September 23rd, Briggs & Stratton racing began cus-tom machining the cylinder deck surface on all 206 and M-Series racing engines. This effort insures that racers get the highest quality products in the marketplace. “we are literally splitting hairs in terms of the measruable results, but custon building ultimately eliminates any incentive or advantage to additional maching. Cost-effective racing is about repeat-ability and this effort is the length a company passioate about racing goes in order to support their racers,” stated Dave Klaus, Director-Briggs & Stratton racing.

The current piston pop-up defined in the 206 or M-Series rule set will not change. This custom, secondary machining operation will leave a slightly different surfacr appearance.

Syd white, one of the most respected men in all of karting, passed away in late August. He was a husband, a father, and the backbone of 4-Cycle Sprint rac-ing. Syd’s forward-thinking approach helped transform karting into the sport

it is today. Syd was a true pioneer, using his leadership roles as National 4-Cycle Tech Director, rulebook Editor, International Kart Federation (IKF) President, and Nation-al Board Member to develop the most recognized set of standards in all of karting, the IKF’s rulebook. He champi-oned the phrase "Spirit and Intent," which is found at the beginning of each section in the rule book, and testifies to his wish that the playing field be as level as possible.

Tom Agan of Hollister, California, said it best: “we’ve lost a good man and a good friend.” The Agan family is one of many who were involved with racing at the nation-al level, in part because of Syd’s generosity and guidance.

Syd approached matters with an old-fashioned com-mon sense that few could challenge. For many years I enjoyed discussions with Syd; often I was treated to life lessons that had little to do with the sport of karting, and always came away with a clearer understanding of what Syd was all about. one such exchange occurred just prior

to the 2009 IKF Grand Nationals in oregon. we had found a way to improve horsepower, and I mentioned the poten-tial for gain to Syd a few days before the event. He quickly responded, “I’ll disqualify you.” I pointed out that the rulebook did not prevent us from using this performance advantage. His response: “Unless you make that available to all racers, you can’t use it. I’ll invoke the Spirit and Intent rule.” I didn’t agree, but completely respected his answer in regards to Spirit and Intent.

Syd and his wife Janet got involved with karting more than 25 years ago. Their presence in karting has been constant. Through the 2011 4-Cycle Grand Nationals in redding, California, Syd played a vital role in it’s devel-

opment. Syd started out driving, then became fascinated by the technical aspects of the sport. Mike Bishop, Ker-mit Buller, and rick Sturgeon each mentored Syd on his way to becoming a national tech authority and first-class motor builder. He was always grateful for their help as he got ever more involved in the sport.

A favorite story he loved to tell took place at the Jack-son County Sports Park in Medford, oregon. Syd was working in tech, responsible for compliance at the 4-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals. A “skinny kid” out of Bakersfield, California, had just won the championship. Immediately after the tech inspection was completed on the motor, Syd walked over to shake the young man’s hand. Syd said, “Kevin Harvick just smiled, shook my hand, and respect-fully said thank you.” Syd was a fan from that moment forward. After Harvick won the NASCAr Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona in July 2010, Syd sent me a photo of himself wearing his autographed #29 hat and a wide smile. It was a very special moment for him.

Many from the karting community have stepped for-ward to share remembrances of Syd.

Terry Lawrence, Cody Hodgson, Tristen orear, Alex Schutte, and Chris Scribner are only a few of the many that earned Duffys, with one of Syd white's engines on their karts. Alex said, “Syd had a passion for the sport and through my experiences with him, he always enjoyed helping others in the karting community.” Terry added, “Syd was a very loyal man to karting. He was a great sponsor to me over the years.”

David Klaus, Director of Briggs & Stratton racing in wauwatosa, wisconsin, entrusted Syd over the years to test and refine engine parts, contributing to the develop-ment of successive generations of racing motors. Briggs racing considered Syd part of their family, sharing privi-leged information and counting on his straight talk and no-nonsense approach to decision making. David held Syd in the highest regard, saying, “…I'm grateful to have called [Syd] a friend and to have had [him] in my life. [Syd’s] love for karting was infectious and the effort [he] put towards making our sport better, fairer, and more cost-effective is the moral compass [he] shared with so many. At times we disagreed but I knew why and [Syd was] always right. [He] will be missed. [Syd’s] body of work lives on in me, and in everyone lucky enough to have had the good fortune of knowing [him], and the sport we all share a love for...The bottom line is Syd worked to make sure to provide an environment for families to come together. It was important to him. He was all about family and he considered karting, and the those involved, as family.”

After Syd’s tenure with the IKF, Terry Nash assumed the leadership role as the IKF’s current 4-Cycle Tech Direc-tor. He works hard to maintain the high standards already in place. Nash had high praise for Syd as well, saying, “working with Syd white for the past 15 years in the area of 4-Cycle tech was a real privilege. His attention to detail and concern for the karter are reflected in the set of rules that the IKF has today. Syd was always the compass in the tech barn. Compassion was not lost in strict adherence to

the rules. This is what I strive for in doing today’s tech.”Joey Hand, accomplished kart racer and current ALMS

series driver of the No. 56 BMw Team rLL M3 GT, told a wonderful story that exemplifies Syd's generous nature:

My big adventure with Syd came at the 4-Cycle Nationals in Riverside, California, in 1996 or 1997. I was there just helping my wife as she raced 4-Cycle and I did not. I did bring my driving gear though as I always did and do! It was very hot that week and they moved the races to the evening under the lights. After some practice in the dark, Syd, who was also racing there on his Emmick with a Star engine, did not think he could see well enough to drive. He came over to Natalie's pit and asked if I would like to race his kart. We padded the seat on top, on one side, and on the bottom on the other so I sat in there kind of sideways. Syd always had lots of power in his Star engines, so right from the first session I was pretty quick. When it was all said and done I was leading the final heat that would have won the Nationals, but had a rear tire de-bead. It was a great race and I was very thankful to Syd for giving me the chance to race his kart.

The Merrill family of Salinas, California developed a very close relationship with Syd and Janet over the years.

winning Duffys was secondary to their friendship. From Thomas Merrill: “His positive attitude was surpassed only by his willingness to help others. He built one of the best communities of karters that has ever been, largely because of his infectious joy for the sport.” Thomas’ father, ross, added “Most of all, we respected Syd’s focused approach to the things that he enjoyed and the satisfaction that he derived from doing them well while helping others along the way. Syd will be missed.”

Indeed, he will.

artin Brothers Isaac and Matthew from Etna California joined the sport of karting about three years ago with an itch for adrenaline. The boys started training at their home track Southern oregon Karters based in Medford, or. The town of Etna is just 80 miles from Medford, with the second closest karting facility in Shasta CA, 122 miles from the boy’s hometown. 2011 was the first year for the boys to travel the touring Championship of the IKF region 11 Elite series . Their home track of Medford was involved in a three track series which included Shasta and reno NV. with the conclusion of the IKF series, both Isaac and Matthew are looking to expand their competition to the Central Valley and compete in the Gold rush series gaining experience and racing with Norcal’s best racing competition.

overall, traveling for Martin Brothers racing is about 2600 miles for the IKF Series and about 3000 miles for any of the Gold rush Series tracks in the Central Valley (Atwater, Monterey, Stockton, Dixon, Davis and Sacramento). Both Isaac and Matthew have learned the important essentials of kart racing building confidence, responsibility and patience. The boys have grown to become great racers who go above and beyond performing as good drivers. Both drivers pick

up trash at every track they attend and run water to track workers. They always have a smile no matter how the day turns out.

11 year-old Matthew, is the youngest brother with only two years of racing in karting and drives the No. 55 Top Kart Mini Magnum machine. Matthew competed in the Junior 1-2 Cycle division and captured runner up in the IKF Elite

Junior 1-2 Cycle championship points and currently sits third in points at his club. In 2010, Matthew finished fourth in the championship at Southern oregon kart club. “Matthew is a real people person and he loves to meet new karters,” says Jay Martin, father of both Isaac and Matthew. In addition to racing, Matthew loves spending time outdoors performing activities like hunting, fishing, camping, target shooting and swimming. Matthew has completed a hunting safety course this past year and is excited to start hunt-ing. Along with all of his outdoor talent, Matthew has a great singing voice and has been known to sing the National Anthem at the opening cer-emonies for some of his own races.

12 year-old Isaac Martin, with only three years of karting experience, has seen success each year driving the No.

18 Top Kart Flash. In 2009 Isaac finished third in the champi-onship at his club with five main event wins. 2010 The Top Kart driver improved more by finishing runner up in the club championship with an additional five main event wins. Isaac captured the IKF region 11 Elite Junior Super Sports-man Championship and currently sits second in the Junior Sportsman points at Southern oregon Kart Club. In addition to the love of racing, Isaac is an enthusiastic outdoorsman

as well. Isaac loves to fish, hike, camp and even ties his own flies for fishing. Isaac is quite the young entrepreneur with his own business in selling hand-made fishing flies and spinning lures.

Martin Brothers racing just fin-ished racing their biggest race the IKF 2 Cycle Grand Nationals at Cal-Speed, Fontana gaining valuable rac-ing experience. Next event for the team is the Norcal Gold rush held at Stockton Kart Club, September 4th. As the only karters from the Siskiyou County, they continue to thrive and become great competitors. The driv-ers will shift into 2012 gearing up for the new season and continue com-peting at their home track with the Southern oregon Kart Club.

Martin Brothers racing would like to thank their current Sponsors and Partners, without them the boys

wouldn’t have been able to travel to other Northern Cali-fornia series: Siskiyou Aviation, Martin’s Experienced Items Etcetera, Talbots Toyland, Etna Brewing Company for old Fashioned root Beer, JB Mining Co, Brian and Carletta Mar-tin and rMG race Media Group.

If it involves karting, we’re there. If it came from karting, we’re there. If it evens

For 25 years, National Kart News has covered it all.

And it won’t stop there.

I t was September 1981 and we were at the famous riverside International raceway for a

road racing event (we called them Enduro Karts then.) we were running a single K-78 Komet rotary valve engine in the Stock Appearing classes with a beauti-fully built Ed Shiffert flexi-flyer chassis. Ed was also the engine builder. Stock Appearing had two weight classes and I was skinny enough to be able to run both with one race on Saturday and the second on Sunday. Very cool to get two races in one weekend.

one of Shiffert’s gang was a big, loud voiced, smart alecky kinda guy named Don Solt. Don worked for the PKA Big Daddy, Jim reed. Jim was an orange packer and Don was a successful produce salesman for him. In person, Don was memorable for turning his full head of silver grey hair into a spectacular pompadour. God knows how much time and hair spray he spent on that hair. It always surprised me that he was willing to put on a helmet and ruin it. Don, however, for all his loud voice, overbearing persona and strong opinions about damn near everything was a hard guy not to like.

regrettably, he was one of those guys who are just too big and heavy for Karts. About 6’2” and 250lbs he also pushed a good sized beer belly around in front of him. Big surprise, that belly didn’t fit too well under the Azusa bowtie steer-ing wheel. He was soldering away in the Controlled Stock class that didn’t allow much of any modification other than blueprinting. I believe that the engine might have been the first K-78 that Ed built for the class. No insult to Ed, but Don just wasn’t competitive in the class. However, he swore up and down that the engine really was fast and that his size and weight was the problem. Betcha you know where this is goin’ doncha?

After the Saturday races were over Don began to INSIST that we screw his engine onto my Kart and have me take his place in Sunday’s race. He had this trick of leaning slightly forward, rocking his head back a little and glaring down his nose at you when he wanted to make his point. He also made a “pistol” of his hand and “shot” you to add emphasis. Com-bine all that with his size and you have a great intimidation technique. “Now listen to me” he said, “it’s just my size and weight that is keeping this engine from winning.” “oK, oK, oK” I said, “we’ll do it.” In honesty, I finally agreed mostly just to shut him up (good luck with that.)

In practice the next morning, we started out with Don’s setup but quickly decided we didn’t need that low a gear. we took 2 teeth off the back and went faster. Then we took off 2 MorE teeth and that really brought it life. Even with all that

gear, it pulled off the tight stuff oK and flat honked down the chute. Top end was everything at riverside. race time came, the flag dropped and we drove away from the pack at the rate of almost 2 seconds PEr LAP. we just cruised around for an hour and picked up one of the easiest race wins imaginable.

After the race, Don was beside himself. with a huge smile on his face, he grabbed anyone who came close by the shoulders, gave them a big shake and said, “SEE” (loud voice)... “I ToLD yoU, I ToLD yoU.” Happiest guy you ever saw.

Ed, whose engine building skills had just been proven, wasn’t exactly sad either.

Several years later, for reasons I never knew, Don chose to take his own life. I know he’s physically gone but the image of that happy guy in the riverside pits will live on in my memory forever.

"Three Duffies and six Screaming Eagles." Top Kart driver Zane Smith and Tony Kart pilot Matt Johnson scored big wins at the  IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand

Nationals (Photos: Sean Buur - Go rac-ing Magazine)

August 30, 2011 - Back in action in the State of California, P1 Engines would look to score race wins and podium results at the 2011 edition of the Inter-national Kart Federation 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals. Taking place at Cal-Speed Karting on the grounds of Cali-fornia Speedway in Fontana, California, P1 Engines powered drivers went on to score three Duffies, six Screaming Eagles and seven-second place results in the five-day event.

In the KPV 1 Heavy class, it was national front-runner Zane Smith who took control of the days action. Pick-ing up the Screaming Eagle award for his pole position earlier that day, Smith went on to claim the heat race win and main event victory as he was the domi-nant driver in the category.

In the KPV 2 class it was Canadian Parker Thompson who was back out front to continue his winning ways.

After qualifying in the second position and making no improvement through the heat race, Thompson was on a tear in the final taking the victory and his first International Kart Federation (IKF) Duffy Award.

In the KPV 4 class, a heated battle would ensue between P1 Engines pow-ered driver Camden Geise and a fellow competitor. After scoring the Screaming Eagle and heat race win earlier in the day, Geise would lead the main event until the final complex of corners where he would be relegated to the second position only yards from the checkered flag. Front-runner Matt Johnson would also compete in the KPV 4 category as he joined Geise on the front row after qualifying but would eventually finish the main event in the fourth position.

In the KPV 4 Heavy class, it was another Screaming Eagle pole position award for a P1 Engines powered driver, as Luis Martinez Jr. would take the top spot. Looking to transition the quick

time in the morning ses-sion to a main e v e n t v i c -tory, Martinez fell just short after leading a majority of the final and

would claim the second step on the podium.

Senior pilot Matt Johnson would score a big win in the PrD Senior class after claiming the pole position earlier that day. After falling to the third posi-tion in the heat race, Johns rebounded in the main event and walked away from the field to score a huge win for P1 Engines.

young-gun Hunter Corbit would claim a pair of podium results as well as a Screaming Eagle award on the week-end but would fall just short of the elu-sive main event victory. After coming from mid-pack in the PrD 1 category to claim the runner-up position, Cor-bit would claim another second place result in the Cadet yamaha class after leading the main event.

John wallace III would see action in the yamaha Senior Heavy class and would run near the front of the field all day long. After missing the pole position by

a scant .03 seconds, wallace managed to lead the main event at one point but would come home P2 at the end of the day.

In 2008, P1 Engines owner Jesus Vasquez claimed the Lake Speed Excel-lence Award, an award that is given away annually at every IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals. In 2011, Zane Smith stepped up to the plate and was a recipient of this award for his off track presence as well as on track results throughout the weeklong event.

For more information on P1 Engines or to book one of their national level engines for testing or event weekend use, please visit them online at www.P1Engines.com or contact P1 owner Jesus Vasquez at 951.662.3464 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Prevents Ethanol-related Prob-lems, Perfect for Seasonal Storage.

SAN ANToNIo, Tx (Septem-ber 1, 2011) VP racing Fuels today announced the introduction of “C9” racing fuel to complement its longstanding C10 blend. “Like our very popular C10, new C9 is an ethanol-free, non-oxygenated unleaded product,” said Jim Kelly, VP’s Corporate Director-Sales.

“C9 prevents all the problems

associated with ethanol in pump gas, thus making it a great fuel for seasonal storage,” Kelly con-tinued. “Unlike pump gas which leaves deposits, clogs injectors, attracts moisture and separates while in storage, C9 won’t go bad. you won’t have to drain fuel from your carburetor even if your engine sits idle for weeks or months, and C9 will remain stable at least two years in a sealed container. Make C9 the last thing you run through the carburetor and fuel tank before

putting your boat or favorite ride away this winter and you'll see instant results when it's time to get things started in the spring.”

“with an octane rating of 96 (r+M/2), C9 provides an eco-nomical alternative to C10 that still offers more resistance to detona-tion and improved performance over premium pump gas,” Kelly added. “C9 won’t harm catalytic converters or oxygen sensors and will provide great starts in heat or cold.”

In addition to automotive appli-cations, C9 will perform well in motorcycles, quads, snowmobiles and more. C9 racing fuel is for use in racing vehicles only and may not be used in street-driven motor vehicles.

In addition to racing fuels, VP’s product line includes performance chemicals, traction compound and race fuel containers, as well as PowerMaster hobby fuels for r/C racing. More information is avail-able online at vpracingfuels.com or powermasterfuels.com.
