    PLANO ISD

    ACADEMY VISIONING COMMITTEE MEETING

    September 1, 2010

    Meeting began at 6:00 p.m.

    Welcome

    Deputy Superintendent Danny Modisette welcomed the committee and thanked everyone

    for being in attendance. Mr. Modisette reminded the committee that the AcademyVisioning Committee has been created by the Plano ISD Board of Trustees to study and

    advise the feasibility of creating a Grade 9-12 option for students that offers choices forprograms not currently available in the comprehensive high schools and senior high

    schools. He stated that the committees thinking is critical for developing the framework

    for the academy.

    Group Activity

    Group Facilitator Roz Keck engaged the committee in a How do you learn? groupactivity.

    Review

    Ms. Keck reminded the committee that their work needs to remain within the established,approved parameters, mission and vision of the district.

    A collaborative wall using key words as the focus of the committees work was initiatedand Ms. Keck asked the group to continue to add words to the wall throughout the

    evening.

    Jigsaw ActivityThe committee discussed previously assigned articles within smaller groups and was

    asked to identify five important points in the articles as well as think about how the

    articles would impact their work in developing the academy. After these discussions, thegroups were asked to teach the various articles to different groups throughout the room.

    After this exercise, tables were asked to share a big Aha moment as well as an Oh-Oh moment they discovered while sharing in their discussions. Aha moments shared

    included: articles intertwined, we should be integrating curriculum, teachers as well

    as students need to be equipped with 21st

    century skills and relevance. Oh-Ohmoments included: assessments, costs, state standards, equitable access and the

    statement that technology doesnt necessarily make things easier, but makes learningmore challenging/engaging for students.

    Current Program Update

    Executive Director for Secondary Academic Services Dr. Jim Wussow gave an overview

    of existing programs in Plano ISD High Schools (9-12). Programs included: Fine Arts,AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), Dual Credit, AP (Advanced

    Placement), IB (International Baccalaureate), CTE (Career and Technology Education),

    JROTC, Athletics, PACE and Club Competitions. Dr. Wussow explained that these

    programs exist in every campus.

    Ms. Keck told the committee the wiki site would be left where it is for their reference and

    for them to access articles, note pages and the collaborative wall.

    HomeworkThe committee is to post discussion, articles or videos on the wiki site before the next

    committee meeting on September 8.

    The next committee meeting will be on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, with a light

    dinner served from 5:30 6:00 pm and the meeting held from 6:00 8:30 pm.
