I am inspired by the beauty that surrounds us. I have the sensitivity to perceive various aspects of things and analyze them in such ways as to find creative solutions to enhance even the most insignificant element. As a planner and designer, I thrive at the knowledge that a balanced built environment can positively affect

our quality of life. Throughout my professional experience, I have always kept these values in mind and I have enthusiastically been involved in various aspects of projects that have enabled me to develop a unique and broad set of skills which I will always continue to use in creating meaningful work.

“You cannot simply put something new into a place. You have to absorb what you see around you, what exists on the land, and then use that knowledge along with contemporary thinking to interpret what you see.”

- Tadao Ando

Constructed wetlands replicate natural wetlands to lter the water that feeds rivers, lakes, and oceans. Without the natural processes of wetlands, chemicals from parking lots, yards, rooftops and roads run into nearby creeks, and pollute the water that sh, insects, amphibians, and people need. These wetland plants were specically chosen due to their ability to grow well in wet conditions. In addition to ltering water through root uptake, the vegetation slows the ow. This allows the water to inltrate into the soil, where microorganisms break down pollutants into nutrients for plant growth. Leftover water evaporates or slowly trickles through a pipe and into the nearest stream. Instead of polluted water going directly into creeks, constructed wetlands use these natural processes to enhance water quality, ultimately improving the health of our streams and the Chesapeake Bay.

Not only do constructed wetlands promote healthy water, but they are self-sucient, thriving ecosystems. Since wetlands have both year round wet areas, and areas that are wet periodically, there is a large variety of plants that appeal to a wide range of wildlife. Wetland plants and insects are essential to building the food web, which provides food for amphibians and song birds. You can see nature at its nest right here, in front of you.

Can you identify these plants? Use this rhyme to help: Sedges have edges, Rushes are round, Grasses are jointed down to the ground!

Dragonies can eat twice as many mosquitos as a frog or toad will. Even dragony larvae will eat mosquito larvae! Can you nd a dragony?

Monarch Butteries use their antennae to “smell” the nectar in plants, and then they “taste” the nectar with their feet. How many butteries can you nd?

A male Bullfrog’s croak is a mating call to females and is also a territorial call against other males. Can you hear a bullfrog in this wetland?

The root of grasses have nitrogen-xing bacteria that convert atmo-spheric nitrogen into xed nitrogen that is usable for plant growth.

Rushes are found in saturated soils and have stems that are round with spongey centers. Their strong stems have been used historically by Native Americans to make oor mats and chair seats.

Sedges require moist ground where their submerged area provides a habitat for aquatic microbes (bacteria) and invertebrates (bugs) that sh and other wildlife feed on.

A Rain Garden is a planted depression that collects rainwater, promotes infiltration, and reduces erosion potential and pollutants, thus improving the water quality in nearby bodies of water. As it rains on our yards, rooftops, parking lots, sidewalks, and roads, water is collected in this rain garden. Once the rainwater arrives, the plants, compost, and soil media go to work.

The plants soak up some water through their root systems, while the rest drains through the soil media. The soil acts as a natural filter, removing pollutants from the water before it enters the storm drains and our streams. Left over rainwater at the surface is evaporated back into the atmosphere.

This garden is a small part of a big plan to help improve stream quality in Fairfax County and ultimately the health of the Chesapeake Bay. (24pts)

Rain gardens can be as beautiful as they are functional. In fact, many of our most beautiful native plants are well adapted to the conditions found in a rain garden so need less water and maintenance, and provide the specific food and cover needed to support local wildlife. From seed distribution to pollination to pest control to nutrient cycling, wildlife performs critical ecosystem services we all depend on. (28pts)

Rain Garden?

Fun Facts:This rain garden collects around 155,000 cf of rain water every year. That’s about the same as 65 school buses filled with clean water making its way towards the Chesapeake Bay! (28pts)

There are about 980 miles of streams in Fairfax County.

The Monarch Butterfly is sometimes called the "milkweed butterfly" because its larvae eat the plant. How many butterflies can you find?

Bumble bees pollinate plants in their search for their food, nectar and pollen from flowers. Can you spot a bumble bee in this rain garden?

Lady Bugs tend to feed on aphids, small insects and eggs of other insects. This way they keep the insect population under control. (22pts)

PECK CHEVROLET HISTORICAL MARKER

planning

The Bob Peck Chevrolet Historical Marker commemorates not only the location but the significance of the Peck dealership that stood at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and North Glebe Road in Arlington County, Virginia since 1964. As the community neighborhood changed with time, the dealership site was redeveloped in 2008 to a mixed use project. The geometry of the marker is based on shapes and designs of the Chevrolet automobiles. It incorporates a 1964 Chevy Impala rear fender design with a chrome fin and a red tail light accent that sits in a circular pocket plaza. The

pedestrian circulation of the area was taken into consideration in the implementation and orientation of this double sided piece. The fender body type and graphic describe and communicate the importance of the dealership and the architectural style of the showroom. This marker is atypical of the standard historical markers seen throughout the county making it truly a one of a kind that speaks to the history of the site but still respects the contemporary style of its context and creates a place making element in an urban setting environment.

ELLEN’S TRACE MEMORIAL

environmental graphics

Ellen’s Trace commemorates Ellen Bozman, a visionary Arlington leader. The project is composed of several signs, located along a linear garden which highlight the many issues in which she made a difference.Designed for a narrow space, the network of signs needed to blend with the surrounding space. An organic curved stainless steel base was chosen to mimic the natural curvature of the surrounding plantings. Subtle glass panels with white lettering allow the reader to see through and get the impression of floating letters over a garden.
