The 2014 Annual Reunion dinner was attended by the Classes of 1964, 1969, 1974, 1989 and 1994. Held at Eltham College on Saturday 11 October, for many this was the first time back at school since leaving. The dinner was open to all OEs who left the school with a 4 or a 9 at the end of their year of leaving as they all were marking a special anniversary of leaving Eltham College. We get asked why we set up the reunions this way and the answer is that we choose the years which have an anniversary to mark e.g. 20 years since leaving the school. Along with the OEs, staff and former staff also attended the dinner. Current staff Tim Hotham, Adrian Thomas, Penny Waterson and Simon McGrahan were joined by retired staff Annette German, Tony Earl, Paul McCartney, Keith Barron and former Headmaster Malcom Green who attended with his wife Sally. Headmaster Guy Sanderson was on hand to greet the OEs as they arrived at school. The 1974 leavers chose to go straight to the Chapel and gathered there to sing, accompanied by OE Guy Collins on the organ. The rest of the OEs set off on tours of the school upon arrival, with the whole school including the Science Block, Tuck Shop and Chapel open for OEs and their guests to look around. After the tours and a drinks reception in Central Hall, the dinner commenced in King George’s Hall, which is now double the size it was when all the OEs were here. The school’s new chef served a delicious meal, but the lack of a spotted dick dessert did not go unnoticed, maybe the next reunion dinner will be an old style school dinner menu! One OE Andy McKercher (1964) enjoyed the dinner so much, he came back the following Monday with his wife for a school lunch! After dinner, coffees were served back in Central Hall. This gave OEs the chance to take a look at all the memorabilia on display in the Old Library, organised by school Archivist Mark Stickings. Many stories were told as OEs reminisced over pictures, copies of The Elthamian, school play programmes and sporting images. A rousing rendition of Jerusalem closed the evening, with all OEs taking part in the song, which for so many brings back memories of assemblies in the Chapel. The 2015 Annual Reunion dinner will be open to OEs from the following years – 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000. The tentative date for the dinner is Saturday 14 November at Eltham College; this will be confirmed in the New Year along with ticket details. The Old Elthamians Sports Club began their move from Foxbury to College Meadow at the end of September 2014, and this will be completed in 2015. After carrying out long overdue repairs to the premises, the Old Elthamians Charitable Trust has been able to welcome Glebe Football Club as the new tenant at Foxbury. The Club were awarded the Football Association Charter Standard Community Club of the Year Award in 2014 and we wish them all possible success in their new home. Our thanks are due to Ian Beith and David Norris for the huge amount of time and effort they put in to achieve this result and to Nick Byers and Alan Sylvester for their help with the exit of the OESC from Foxbury. Many of you have enjoyed playing rugby and cricket at Foxbury. I have such fond memories of my own time playing rugby there for about ten years after leaving Eltham in 1963 and later playing squash in the newly built courts. Glebe FC have kindly offered all who have been to Eltham College an associate membership at a very modest annual subscription. I cannot promise the sound of leather on willow but they will have a well-stocked bar! Their arrival will bring valuable revenue to the OE Charitable Trust, which along with rent from the telecommunications mast at Foxbury, will allow us to meet the Objects of the Trust and assist future, current and former pupils of Eltham College. With Foxbury no longer our main focus, Ian Beith as Chairman and I as President will now work with the Committee of the Old Elthamians Association to expand the activities of the Association.

If any Old Elthamians wish to play an active role please do contact Ian or myself. Perhaps you would like to act as your year group representative or help us to organise a Regional gathering of Old Elthamians? The aims of the OEA are social and business interaction, and to offer support where required. I assure you that we are in the business of “Friend Raising”. Plane Talking is sent to over five thousand Old Elthamians and parents of current pupils at Eltham College; about half by email and half by post. The costs of the production, printing and postage are met by the OEA and it is also available to read on the OE website, along with news of reunions and events. If you would like to advertise in Plane Talking, please contact the Development Office. I look forward to meeting with many of you at an Old Elthamian event in 2015. Adrian Baulf OEA President

Eltham College proudly announced a new partnership with the MCC in October 2014. The Marylebone Cricket Club Foundation (MCCF) has set up 19 hubs around the country in recent years and Eltham College is their latest one, based in the Eric Liddell Sport Centre. These hubs have the aim of identifying talented cricketers in state schools between the ages of 11-15 and providing them with top class coaching. The course will run from Christmas to Easter 2015 with trials which began on Sunday 7 December 2014. Around 15 to 20 boys at both U13 and U15 level were selected from local state schools to participate in the three months of training. It is hoped that some fixtures can also be arranged between Eltham College and the MCCF teams. Master in Charge of Cricket and Former Surrey Captain, Jonathan Batty, said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to engage our local community and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the MCC as well as the Foundation.”

Devonshire Terrace in London was the venue for the Class of 2004 reunion drinks on Thursday 18 September. Former teaching staff Keith Barron, Elaine Galloway and Sue Donaldson were joined by current staff Simon McGrahan, Adrian Thomas, David Cotterill and Mark O’Dwyer. Katie Evans also joined the reunion as she was friends with many of the OEs and attended the 2004 Leavers’ Ball. Katie is now an Economics and Business Studies teacher at the school. The evening was well supported by the OEs who left the school ten years ago. Whilst some of the former classmates still see each other on a regular basis, for others it was the first time back in contact with both the school and the other OEs. It was a really great evening with lots of reminiscing and stories being told, with many of the OEs wanting to know about what really went on in the Common Room back in their school days!

This summer we welcomed 94 new members to Old Elthamians. The new OEs left Eltham College after achieving fantastic A-Level results. For many, the next step is university, whilst some headed off for a gap year and others started their working lives. The theme for the Leavers’ Ball was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the marquee was transformed into a wonderland of sweets and chocolates. Willy Wonka called all the guests to dinner, which included Augustus Gloop soup, a Mike Teavee main course and a sweet strawberry surprise for dessert. The evening ended with hours of dancing to the house band led by OE James Nall (2007), a regular fixture at the Leavers’ Ball. Some of the recent leavers returned to school for the Winter reunion to take part in the rugby and netball fixtures, with others coming along to support the teams and catch up for the first time as an OE. We look forward to seeing all the 2014 leavers back at a reunion over the next few years and once again welcome them to Old Elthamians.

It was a busy six weeks for our new Headmaster, Guy Sanderson who in addition to finding his feet and his way around the school, hosted six ‘Meet the Headmaster’ events. Four of these were for parents at the school but two were hosted for Old Elthamians, one in London and the other in Hong Kong. We were again very grateful to Harry Pong who hosted the welcome dinner for Guy at Classified in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Along with Harry, Raphael Ho, Raphael Chan, Calvyn Pang, Chris Place, James Tsang, Bruce Tseng, Patrick Hurworth, Max Lau, Stanley and Sharon Pong who all live in Hong Kong, David Robins, President of the Centenary Campaign Development Board, Guy Sanderson and Simon McGrahan were over from the UK.

Additionally Simon and Guy met up with Charles Lau and Wai-Lum Li who were unable to come to the dinner on the Saturday. On the Monday, Simon was shown around Hong Kong International School where Patrick Hurworth is Principal of the High School, while Guy visited Guangzhou in mainland China, investigating the possibility of opening an Eltham College in Guangdong province. It’s a long way off but several steps nearer after the visit. The next overseas OE reunion will be in New York on Thursday 14 May. Guy and Simon will be joined on this trip by OEA President, Adrian Baulf. Details of the reunion will be confirmed shortly on the future events pages of the OE website.

Fred Ryder attended Eltham College from 1939-43 and passed away two years ago at the age of 86. His daughters Jan Perks and Sue Bush visited Eltham College to see where their Dad had come to school and learn a little more about his days here. Jan and Sue kindly donated some of his possessions to the Eltham College archives, including a smart cricket cap (Fred was in the 1st XI) and some of his exercise books. In return Archivist Mark Stickings was able to give them a copy of the entries we have for Fred in the archive, such as the record card with his grades and other snippets from the Elthamian.

There were strong Eltham College connections in the London Chorus’s Remembrance themed concert at the chapel of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, on Friday 7 November. The concert was organised by and very much the project of Mrs Prue Corp, a current Governor and former member of the teaching staff. The main soloist was the school’s current Director of Music, Laura Oldfield. OE Jaivin Raj (2014) sang the tenor solos in an extract from Britten’s War Requiem and Raphael Geldsetzer (current Year 9 pupil) was the treble soloist in Geoffrey Burgon’s Nuncio Dimittis. The trumpet soloist in the Burgon piece was Mark Armstrong of the Royal College of Music, a former trumpet teacher at Eltham College. The concert, conducted by composer Ronald Corp OBE, was a night of brilliant music with readings from Channel Four’s Jon Snow.

Two Old Elthamians, whose father taught at the school for nearly 30 years, visited Eltham College on Friday 28 November. Lloyd Davies (1985) and his sister Sian (1982) are the children of the late JHH “Henson” Davies, who was the school’s Director of Music from 1955 to 1984. During a lengthy tour of old haunts, they were able to admire the improved facilities since their time at the school in the 1980s. Of particular interest was the Music Block, which opened in 2005, as both Sian and Lloyd have continued the musical tradition of the Davies family. After the tour, they enjoyed school lunch in the extended King George’s Hall.

The Sixth form gallery will be the location for the class of 2010 and 2011 joint reunion lunch on Saturday 12 September 2015. This will be the first reunion organised specifically for the 2010 and 2011 leavers and it’s hoped that many of them will be able to join us for the lunch. More information about the reunion will be sent out in the spring.

The 2014 OE Winter Reunion was held on Sunday 14 December in the grounds of Eltham College. The weather was very kind to us and the afternoon was dry and bright, but with a chilly wind! Spectators were nicely warmed though by the tea, coffee and mulled wine served in the Marathon Pavilion before braving the side lines to watch the netball, touch rugby and the President’s XV playing the school’s 1st XV. It is always nice to welcome back the OEs to play on their old grounds and this year was no exception with an excellent turn out for both the netball and rugby touch tournaments, and a very strong President’s XV. The OEs, led by Adam Calderwood (2013), were very much ‘up’ for the game and looked rather imposing in their 2013 New Zealand Tour shirts. Combining a blend of size, strength and speed they were ultimately too good for the current crop of 1st XV players and went on to win 5-32. The OEs scored six tries and looked dangerous whenever they had the ball in hand, particularly when gifted it by a poor kick, which Josh Parry (2014) used regularly to hurt the 1st XV with lethal counter attacks. The Pinkham Cup was awarded to Andrew O’Malley (2013) who despite his size and power created two scores with some deft handling and was impassable in defence.

Four teams took part in the netball tournament, the Eltham College current A team, a staff team and two OE teams, one made up of the 2014 leavers and the other from the a group of 2010, 2011 and 2012 OEs. It was a hard fought tournament with some excellent games, a few more evenly matched than others! The final tally of points meant that there was a draw at the top between the school’s A team and the 2010, 2011 and 2012 OE team. A special mention must go to the staff team who were formed just for this tournament and put in a valiant effort and gave the younger OEs a good run for their money!

The touch rugby was contested by five teams of OEs and a staff team. OE ages ranged for Jack Ditton’s team, most of whom played for the recent leavers last year to Roger Carter and Tim Ruffle who guested for the Class of 2000 team. The final was again won by Andrew Velasco’s team which included Ben Cartwright who managed to struggle off the telly and out of his VW to roll back the years. Thank you to all the referees who gave their time to officiate in the matches throughout the afternoon. After the games had ended, a splendid afternoon tea was served in the dining hall to around 250 spectators, guests and players. The cups were awarded to the winning teams by OEA President Adrian Baulf. Sean Thomson, Head of Rugby, made a special presentation to Adam Calderwood who was presented with a commemorative shirt after the game in recognition of playing 50 times for the 1st XV during this time at Eltham College. We hope to once again be able to host the Christmas lunch at the 2015 Winter Reunion alongside the sporting fixtures on Sunday 13 December.

There are many discussions in the press about whether students should carry on with a language to degree level. Are there really advantages in the job market for Graduates who speak a second language or should their focus rather be somewhere else? We brought together a panel of Old Elthamians and current Parents who spoke about their experience of using a second, third and in some cases fourth language in the work place. The message came across very strongly that in this Global market place, speaking a second language has huge advantages. More business is being done with the Middle East, North Africa, the Far East and South America than ever before. Being able to engage with colleagues not only in an office environment but in a social one has become more important than ever. Having a second language means that you stand out, it gives you something extra compared with other Graduates applying for a post. With many people now leaving university with a 2:1 degree, having something that separates you from the rest can make all the difference in securing a job. For all the panellists, a second language has given them the opportunity to work across the world. Would they have been able to take on those roles if they only spoke English? In some cases yes, but all said that the advantage of speaking another language was that they were successful in their jobs because they were able to converse with more colleagues and locals of that country. Their language skills opened doors for them and to this day, keep giving them an advantage. Between them all, the panellists have worked in Africa, throughout Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and America. There is also a very simple pleasure in being able to immerse yourself in the culture of another country by speaking the language. To be able to read a menu, order food, understand the news and converse with local people in their own language, is a wonderful way of enjoying visiting another country. Thank you to OE Alex Wort (2008) Joy Solomon (Parent) Martin Broadhurst (Parent) Tim Walters (Parent) Ian Ingram (1962) and John Corlett (2006) for coming along to speak on the evening.

OE Russell Dellar (1987) gave two of our Sixth Form students the opportunity to join international law firm Bird & Bird on a week-long placement in the summer. 12 students submitted applications for the placement and the successful candidates were Olivia Courtney and Jack Miller. The feedback from both Olivia and Jack was that they had a fantastic week and would encourage any current Lower Sixth students who are interested in Law to apply for the placements which are once again on offer in 2015. Jack Miller wrote the following report on his placement; “The week I spent at Bird & Bird during the summer was a great experience. A programme of activities was organised for us, spread over the course of five days. At the start of the week we were put into teams and tasked with researching a potential new client in the golf industry. On the final day we presented our findings to a panel of lawyers from the sports sector. We were given talks by members of the firm, such as ‘Misconceptions of a Career in Law’ and interview advice, providing the chance to meet with Partners in the firm and ask them questions. In addition we were lucky enough to have lunch with Russell Dellar, who generously cancelled a meeting to accommodate us on our AS level results day. I feel that the brilliant organisation of the week ensured this was an engaging and useful experience throughout. We were provided with insights and advice which are sure to prove invaluable in the future, so I would strongly recommend applying for the Bird & Bird work experience programme to anyone considering a career in law.” Another OE Paul Finn (1986) has also offered the school two placements at Bromley based Law firm Thackray Williams. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students interested in Law to gain some valuable work experience. If you are able to offer placements or work experience in your company, please contact Helen in the Development Office.

We will be hosting two careers forums in the spring term 2015 at Eltham College. The first will focus on Engineering & Technology and will take place on Tuesday 24 February, with the second one based around careers in The Media, Marketing and Communications on Tuesday 28 April. Any OEs who would like to be on the panel for either of the forums should contact Helen in the Development Office. Entrepreneurial OEs returned to Eltham College in November to talk to students about what it is really like to be the boss, the challenges that are faced and how to take your business idea from concept to reality. What is an entrepreneur – according to one of the OEs it is someone who creates something for themselves and is then responsible for the success of their creation. First of the panel to speak was Simon Freeman (1993) who set up his company freestak.com with his wife Julie. They have developed the business, which creates social media marketing campaigns for running brands, out of a passion for running. Simon explained the importance of developing a good all round skills base before starting a business and the fact that because running was a passion, it made the transition into a business owner, all the more easier. Also working with a supportive and experienced business partner, in this case Simon’s wife Julie, can made the difference between success and failure. Matt Lewis (1990) started running events at university and realised there was a gap in the market for a karaoke band. Whilst working full time for C&W, Matt managed the band and was soon in a position to work full time for his newly formed company the Active Group. The company has been running for nearly 20 years with a team of three full time staff and with a group of freelance event managers who work with them with on a regular basis. As a business model, keeping his company small has worked well and Matt explained that understanding what works best for you, ultimately ensures the success of your company. Property entrepreneur Graham Kinnear (1992) took the audience through his story, which involved being made redundant three times before finally acknowledging that working for himself meant never worrying about his P45 again! Graham has now established three businesses, a buy to let property portfolio; a property management business and a tenancy advisory company. He explained that you have to put in 100%, there are no half measures when you work for yourself. There are stressful elements such as no sick or holiday pay and the responsibility for staff, but he doesn’t view running his companies as work, just that he really enjoys what he is doing and the challenges it brings. Amy Golding (2004) learnt of an opportunity with the Dragons’ Den judge James Caan and knew that this was someone she wanted to work with. Whilst Amy had been following a traditional route with Deloitte for the first few

years after leaving Cambridge, her first entrepreneurial move was to apply for the role with James Caan. It was a risky move, but one which has ultimately paid off. Amy had little knowledge of recruitment companies, which was what the role was focused on, but she has always had a real passion for strategy and was able to transfer those skills to the new company where she is now COO. Our final speaker of the evening was Andrew Edwards (1974) who is not only an OE but also the Dad of OEs Michael (2001) and Katie (2003) and the son of Norman (1938). Andrew started as a milkman who grew his business to 650 customers, this was his first exposure to seeing how a business can be expanded and the challenges that come with expansion. He then went on to Loughborough and into a career as an accountant. An interest in start-up companies has seen an involvement in three stockbroking companies, and given him a sound understanding of the risks involved in taking an idea from concept to reality. He explained that work does not come to you, instead you have to make it happen. There are many failures in start-up companies, far more than there are successes but getting it done and closing the deal is, in the end, what it is all about. There were some great questions from the audience and the advice taken away was to be brave but not reckless; read widely about the subject you have a passion for, this will help transform it into to a real business; everything you do is sales, you are your business; sometimes it’s a simple as taking something that is already there but doing it better. Ultimately, running your own business is a lifestyle choice and you need to make it work for you.

Dr Peter Catterall (1980) returned to Eltham College in December to give a lecture to the Senior History Society on an area of his personal research interest. Those in attendance listened intently as Peter proceeded to explain the role of the British during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. During his talk, Peter prompted the pupils to think about what they would have done had they been in Kennedy’s position and how at each stage of the crisis things might have been solved. With some time for questions at the end about his lecture, it is clear that those in attendance gained a much

greater understanding of the crisis, a topic studied during our GCSE course in Year 11. After the lecture, Peter presented Eltham College with a copy of one of the books he edited, The MacMillan Diaries, which can now be found in the school’s Library. The History Society are very grateful to Peter for attending and look forward to inviting him to speak again in the future. If you would like to speak to any of the Eltham College societies, please contact Helen in the Development Office.

In October the Eltham College Economics and Business Society welcomed its first external speaker of the year. OE Rosie Wakeling (2008), a Cambridge graduate, is now working for Accenture, a consultancy firm that operates in over 56 countries and employs over 280,000 people. Upper Sixth student Ben Minett is President of the Business and Economics Society and wrote the following report: “Rosie presented a stimulating talk on the life of a consultant having spent time in Manila and other exotic locations in order to complete projects for the firm, working alongside senior management teams. One particular project that interlinked well with the current A level course was that Accenture helped with the streamlining of the benefits systems, developing the technology to make it possible whilst dealing with the ever changing politics. The versatility of working for such a firm captured the interest of the audience as Rosie described how Accenture were involved in everything from providing the statistics for the 6 Nations rugby to developing technologies for the NHS and consulting the management of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Rosie also introduced a range of different programs that Accenture offer to Graduates. There is also ‘Horizon’, an eight month paid placement offered by Accenture for gap year students, giving them a chance to gain some excellent work experience, earn a salary and travel before starting university. A big thank you to Rosie for the time and effort she put in talking to the Society.”

OE Jim Knight (1983) hosted one of the Sixth Form students, Jack Melling, on a visit to Parliament over the summer. Jack wrote the following account of his day. “During the summer holidays, I was lucky enough to meet with Old Elthamian, Lord Knight of Weymouth, in Parliament, where I had the chance to discuss some of the major current political issues. As I plan to study Politics at university, I saw this as a great opportunity to meet someone who is part of the Parliamentary process itself and learn anything that may be beneficial as I pursue my political studies. This was the first time I had visited Westminster, and so I was surprised to be sitting in the Members area in the House of Lords with a former Minister of Education. Lord Knight himself evidently has vast political and ministerial experience. During our conversation, I pressed him about his views on various domestic and international political issues, questioning for example, if he believed UKIP were a serious threat to the mainstream parties, as well as asking how he stood regarding potential reform of the House of Lords, a topic we had been discussing in our lessons at the time. It was incredibly interesting to hear about his political experiences with the Cabinet as well as his elevation to the House of Lords. He was however just as interested to hear about Eltham College as it stands today, in comparison to how it was when he was a student here. After our chat, Lord Knight kindly gave me a tour of the House of Lords, and I later went to watch a Select Committee meeting in the Commons. This was such a great experience and I have remained in contact with him ever since.”

OE Matt Lisley (2012) came back to Eltham College in November to speak to the Sixth form Geology and Physics students. Matt is currently studying Geophysics at Imperial College London and spoke about his course and what life is like at a London university. Sixth form student Elizabeth O’Malley had this to say about Matt coming in: “Matt told us about the many adventures that he has been on during his field trips for his course work, from a caravan in France to the hot Chilean desert! He also explained what else the course would involve and some of the things he has enjoyed learning. With the current high university fees it was nice to hear from Matt about the sponsorships that Geophysics and Geology students can get involved in with oil or gas companies paying your university fees. Matt also told us about life at a London university and his daily life as a student from going to lectures and seminars, the night life in London, and obviously doing some of the important work that is required for such a difficult course. The talk was very enjoyable and everyone learnt a lot from it. Matt was kind enough to leave us lots of leaflets about Geology and Imperial College, along with some tasty rock sweets.”

Michael Barton (2010), a Physics Graduate with high functioning autism, has recently completed a two month speaking tour of the UK. Here he talks about the tour, how it came about and how successful it has been. “I launched my second book, ‘A Different Kettle of Fish – A Day

in the Life of a Physics Student with Autism’ at the Autism Show at the ExCel in June 2014 and gave a presentation on the main stage to over 400 people. Most people talk about autism in a very negative light focusing on the problems of being autistic, whereas I have found there are real benefits and advantages to being autistic, so my talk focuses on the positive aspects, hence the title. After my talk, so many people came up and asked me to come and speak at their school, support group, at their conference or AGM, that I organised a two month tour of the UK.

Planning a tour in just two months turned out to be harder than expected, however I ended up presenting 28 talks at 22 venues throughout the UK over the September/October period. At the end of each talk I gave an example on how I used my musical skills to overcome social difficulties with a virtuoso spoons demonstration! Autistic people have a different way of thinking, which means they can think outside the box. Society needs people who think differently and a quote that went down very well in my talk was from Frank Zappa, an avant garde musician, who once said “Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” As the 21st century progresses I can see the world moving into a new scientific era where the demand for autistic people’s highly logical skills will increase exponentially. Politicians need to start listening to scientists (climate change being a perfect example). As Star Trek’s Mr Spock (a perfect example of someone with high functioning autism) said in one episode: ‘Nowhere am I so desperately needed as among a shipload of illogical humans.’ Now that my very successful tour is over, I’m looking for full time employment in the world of Physics (any suggestions gratefully received); however the presentation skills I’ve developed as a result of the tour and the knowledge that I have educated and inspired hundreds of people have put me in good stead for the future.” For more information on Michael please visit his website www.michaelbarton.org.uk.

“And Now For Something Completely Different” - Michael Barton’s UK Speaking Tour

Michael Barton (2010)

In September 1954 at the tender age of 8 years, I arrived at Eltham College as a boarder. My mother had purchased all the required clothing for me which I recall included five grey shirts, a pair of black house-shoes and a couple of grey suits all of which were a new experience for me. I recall my first night in the Junior School dorm under the watchful eyes of Miss Brown. I tried hard to conceal my mixed feelings of excitement and terror but I need not have been afraid because everything turned out just fine. I soon made friends with other kids and realized I was better off than most. My mother lived a few miles away in Petts Wood but most of the other 120 or so boarders would go “home” on the holidays to guardians while their parents were missionaries in far-off lands such as Sierra Leone and the Belgian Congo (as it was then known). Although I only spent two years at the school my memories, mostly fond, are indelibly recorded. I recall the many cricket and rugby matches, cross country runs, visits to the little indoor swimming pool and exhausting games of “fives” in the court next to the tuck shop. Evenings were often spent roller skating down the driveway under the plane tree and later after “lights out” in secret stag beetle races in D dorm and the occasional midnight feast. Like several other mischievous lads I was something of a rebel and found it difficult to stay put after “lights out” for which I was rewarded with fairly regular visits to “Occy’s” office to get three of the best on my tender rear end. My pals and I would later proudly compare bruises and wear them like badges of honour. One great pastime for us was visiting the feed store in Mottingham village where we’d buy a bag of chick peas which served as great ammunition for small metal peashooters. The sounds of battle could be heard late into

the night in D dorm resulting in a carpet of chick peas in the dorm and the inevitable visit to Occy. It all came flooding back to me during my recent visit this past autumn. Although there’s now a car park on what used to be a field in front of the school I was pleased to see that so many things are still exactly as I remember them. The beautiful Chapel, the Quad with its adjacent cloisters, my old classroom at the corner of the main building have endured along with, of course, the magnificent plane tree that still proudly stands guard over the school. Looking back I realize that despite my natural inclination towards mischief, I did benefit from a very good education that enabled me to pass my 11 plus exam and to gain a free grammar school place. I like to think that the whole experience was an important contributor to my lifetime values of loyalty and respect to country, family and friends.

To commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, Eltham College has organised a number of special events. In June 2014 the entire Year 9 group visited the WW1 Battlefields and laid wreaths at the graves of OEs Eric Claxton and Arthur Carnegie (see previous issue of Plane Talking for a full report). A major exhibition in the school Library shows not only what happened to all 34 OEs who died in WW1 but also displays letters and artefacts from that time. The pupils in Years 6 and 9 have made a special study of the fallen from the Great War, using full access to Ancestry.co.uk, of which free use was negotiated by OE Peter Wootton (1969). Peter has also been showing the pupils how to use the website. The school magazines from the 1914-18 period have been available online for pupils, parents and OEs. A poppy was purchased from the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower of London by Eltham College in memory of the 34 OEs who died in WWI. The poppy will be on permanent display in the school for future generations to see.

Further related activities have included talks in Chapel by Archivist Mark Stickings and the major exhibition in the Gerald Moore Gallery – Not Warriors, Just Men – which juxtaposes battlefront scenes from the Western Front in 1914 and Afghanistan in 2013. The focus this year has been more on the Great War, while also continuing to remember the sacrifices of OEs in the Second World War. At our Remembrance Day service on Tuesday 11 November, the OEs were well represented, including Leonard Lovelock who left Eltham College in 1939 and personally knew several of the names on the WWII memorial. OE David Norris (1958) laid a wreath along with Headmaster Guy Sanderson and Head Prefect Aran Tawana. After the service the OEs visited the Gerald Moore Gallery to see the exhibition there. OEs are always welcome at our Remembrance Day service – if you would like to join us next year, please contact Helen in the Development Office.

The Headmaster and the Co-Chairmen of the Old Elthamian Sports Club, Mr Paul Daniels and Mr Alan Farmer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in November 2014. Through the MoU, Eltham College and the OESC seek to benefit from a much closer association and relationship. The benefits include: re-establishing a greater sense of community between the school and an amateur sports club which is closely associated with both current and former pupils of the school; shared sporting excellence and achievement through the use of outstanding playing facilities and coaching opportunities; and shared costs of developing and maintaining the school’s facilities, drawing upon sponsorship and grants from national governing bodies. The MoU has been agreed to enable the successful move of the OESC from Foxbury to College Meadow no later than September 2015. Minis and Junior OE rugby is already based at the school, cricket will begin to be played at the school in April 2015, and it is anticipated that OE senior rugby will be relocated to the school from the Hospital Ground in September 2015. On signing the MoU the Headmaster, Guy Sanderson, said he was “thrilled and delighted to have the OESC move on to the school site. This represents a fantastic opportunity for the school and for the OESC.” Mr Farmer and Mr Daniels said that already the benefits were being seen and that everyone at the Sports Club was looking forward to the future together. OEs Nick Byers (1980) and Alan Sylvester (1979) have also played an integral part in the move by the OESC from Foxbury.

A sincere thank you to all OEs who donated to the recent telephone campaign. A record £164,000 was pledged over the three weeks of calling. Most of the money was pledged towards either Bursaries or the development of the west side of Old Quad. The Governors launched the Centenary Campaign November 2013 and we are delighted to report that £3.5 million has been donated and pledged so far. The first phase of the project, the construction of a Biology laboratory and Mathematics classroom are complete. The Centenary Wing The new Centenary Wing will be the most significant capital programme ever undertaken by Eltham College, providing new departmental bases for Mathematics, as well as Modern and Ancient Languages. The entire building will be wifi enabled to harness changes in teaching styles and at the heart of the building there will be a new Sixth Form Centre which is being designed to give students a sense of university style teaching: flexible and collaborative learning spaces will sit alongside seminar rooms, and a student zone and café will also house a dedicated base for university advice and career mentoring. The Headmaster and the Governors have decided to make the Sixth Form Centre the centre piece of the design, providing an aspirational focus for what will be the educational pinnacle of the pupils’ time at the school. Some changes are therefore required to the planning permission, and these are currently under consideration by the Bromley Planning Department. We hope to hear back from them in the New Year. Widening Access and Student Support Eltham College used to receive government funding to support about a quarter of all pupils under the Direct Grant and Assisted Places Schemes until they were phased out in 2004. To stay true to the wishes of our founders, and to keep the school open to all who could benefit, we undertook to replace as much of this funding as possible from school resources and fund-raising.

Today we offer over 200 Scholarships and Bursaries, ensuring that gifted pupils from a wide variety of backgrounds can access the school’s all round educational excellence. The benefits of offering such awards extend beyond those who receive them, enriching the Eltham College community and enhancing its social diversity. Anyone who would like to assist with either the Bursary Fund or the new building many do so on the website or over the phone by ringing the Development Office.

New Headmaster Guy Sanderson invited OEs to join him for drinks at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand on Thursday 9 October. It was a chance for Guy to meet many OEs and to speak to them about what it meant to him to take on the role of Headmaster at Eltham College. Around 50 OEs were able to attend the reception, including some from the Class of 2010 who were attending their first OE reunion. They seemed to enjoy the occasion and said

they would encourage more of their former classmates to attend events such as these. The reception also gave OEs an opportunity to catch up with each other and some of the teachers including Messrs Thomas, McGrahan, O’Dwyer, Cotterill and Barron and Mrs Galloway. Guy will be attending many of the OE events coming up in 2015 and looks forward to meeting more members of the OE community.
