PolygonsA polygon is a CLOSED plane figure made up of 3 or more line segments. These line segments meet at points called vertices (vertex).
To classify (place into categories) polygons, you can count the number of sides and angles they have.

Regular Polygons
To be a regular polygon, all sides and angles must be congruent (same size and shape). The figures below are regular polygons.

PolygonsTo name a polygon, you must count the number of sides and angles. Refer to the chart below for types of polygons. The most common ones are highlighted.

Congruent
Sometimes it can be hard to tell if sides are congruent on a figure. Small marks will tell you which sides are congruent.
Both sides with one mark are congruent. Both sides with 2 marks are congruent.

Quadrilaterals We use a hierarchy to help us classify quadrilaterals. A hierarchy is a treelike diagram used for classifying things.
Keep in mind that all of the shapes in this lesson are considered quadrilaterals. All of them have four sides and angles.
