Principal's MessageIt is with very mixed emotions that I write my final Principal Message for our Curran Newsletter! As many of you are aware, I have made the decision to retire from Murrieta Valley Unified School Year at the end of the 2018-19 school year. After 34 years as a teacher and administrator, I am saying goodbye to the best career in the world! I have LOVED every minute that I have spent teaching and learning with students in Kindergarten–8th grade both in Canada and in the United States. I am blessed that I found my passion and calling! It is now time to spend time with my family and very precious grandchildren. I look forward to volunteering in their schools and keeping involved in education in a new capacity - as a grandma!

I am thrilled to welcome E. Hale Curran’s new Principal, Mr. Greg Lumsden. He is absolutely a perfect fit for Curran and will continue our Cougar Pride. I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Lumsden at Rail Ranch Elementary School and respect and admire his commitment to teaching and learning. Greg’s passion for STEM, and in particular mathematics education, will take Curran to new heights.Come and meet Mr. Lumsden on Friday, May 24th following Friday Flag at our Coffee with the Principal.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your students’ education experience!

Best Wishes,Mrs. Roden, EHC Principal

In the Classroom…Students in grades TK-2nd are currently learning about College and

Career Readiness. While these students are still very young, research indicated that exposing children to discussions about college and career

beginning in Kindergarten is very beneficial. California has made college and career readiness a central focus of the Local Control

Funding Formula, which changed how schools are funded.

During the first two lessons, students are learning what the it means to have a career vs. a job and they are being encouraged to think of what types of careers might be of interest to them. The last two lessons are

focused on college. Students are taught that while college can be important for certain careers, it is not the right path for everyone.

Some students go straight into the workforce, while others may attend a trade/vocational school. Students are learning through classroom

discussions, activities and videos.

A Note from our Library

Congratulations to the students who made the 75-point goal in Reading Counts! We had over 200 students attend the game party! We had so many fun board games, puzzles, and electronic devices. Everyone had a fantastic time! The end of the year goal of 100 Reading Counts points. Students will participate in a mystery activity. What an exciting way to end the year! Our Scholastic book fair was a great success! Thank you to our awesome PTA and all our parent volunteers for their help. We could not put on such an amazing book fair without you. We challenged the students this year with an estimation game.

Attention parents: If your child has an overdue library book, please have them return it to the library as soon as possible. Thank you for your help on this matter!

~Mrs. Russell

Our book fair theme was “Dinosaurs” . The students had to estimate how many dinosaur eggs were in the container! The students with the closest estimation in each grade level are as follows:

Kinder: Mikayla L.1st grade: Isabella D. with an exact guess…WOW!2nd grade: Lilah M.3rd grade: Sierra H.4th grade: Sicily R.5th grade: Abigail H.

Great job estimating!!!
